If you're going to watch the Rocky franchise you can't skip any movies. Because the movies aren't about boxing. It's about a family whose business is boxing. These movies span 30 years from the time Rocky and Adrian first get together and then on into grandparenthood. Each movie is a different chapter in the lives of the family, and extended family.
Yep. While there's one specific low point during the series that most agree on, it doesn't really matter. Because there's no such thing as a bad Rocky movie.
@scottneil1187 You are correct. I didn't mean for the 30 years to be a hard number. Because when I mentioned extended family, I was referring to the Creed family. I just didn't want to chance spoilers. Yes, Rocky Balboa has a major role in the Creed movies.
I'm a Philly chic, born and raised. 😊 Fun facts: the guy singing outside around the canfire was Sylvester's brother Frank Stallone. It was 15 rounds ... Then changed it to 12. Cant wait for Rocky 2! They get better and better. Can't miss any of them because everything/everyone comes around full circle. Even in CREED. 😊 You will fall in love with Rocky and Adrian. So excited!
They announced Apollo as the winner. You can hear it in the back ground. This is a love story that had boxing in it. Rocky just wanted to go the distance.
Yeah the idea is that if the glove doesn't slide along the surface of the skin it will actually tear the skin instead so the vaseline is a lubricant to prevent that.
Fun fact: Rocky was such a success in 1976 that the following year it won Oscars for Best picture, beating films such as Taxi Driver & Network, and Best Director. Sylvester Stallone was nominated for Best Actor/Screenplay, Talia Shire Best Actress and both Burgess Meredith & Burt Young were nominated for Best supporting actor.
Went and saw this when it first came out! Everyone in the theater ( me included!) was so into this movie and so touched by it that when it ended we all stood up and gave the movie a standing ovation!! Never had that happen before or after!! Wow!!
Stallone got the idea for the movie after watching Muhammad Ali face an aging fighter, Chuck Wepner, in March 1975. That fight also went 15 rounds and Wener did knock Ali down--though a photo of his punch showed that he was standing on Ali's foot when he did it. All championship fights were 15 rounds until late 1982, when an outclassed fighter died after getting knocked out in the 14th round. The fact that the fight was on national TV was why it caused such an uproar.
I like that they don’t entirely make Creed the villain. Obviously, he’s the guy Rocky is trying to beat in the ring, and there’s trash talk, but it never goes beyond that. Apollo is just a cocky world champion.
Micky visiting Rocky's apartment will forever be one of my absolute favorite movie scenes. Both actors killed it and you could see where both characters were coming from.
Hey guys! "We don't watch boxing due to the brutality". 2 minutes into the fight "Break his ribs"!!!! Priceless. 😂😂😂 Also, shout out to Canada for helping with the California wildfires. 😪
I'm glad your watching this franchise. Enjoy the many facets of both struggle and triumph. Love your take on it guys(especially your love for raw eggs).Ty🥰
Paulie is actually a complex character. There is a photo of him in a Navy uniform I believe, which might mean he suffers from some kind of PTSD and depression. He's a broken person that does have good intentions but falls short a lot. You'll see in later movies he actually opens up here and there, especially when it comes to his sister.
The story of Rocky is a love story , the coming together of 2 people who feel like life's passing them by ,... wonderfully crafted drama , and the franchise as grown to legendary status.....
yes Butkus was Stallones dog at the lowest time in his life when this scrip was made and movie made, its a very warm feel to the movie having Butkus in the movie
@@Jen-Mom Some Rocky movie trivia some others may have replied also.... the first fighter in the opening of the movie "Spider" was the same actor also in Rocky 6 and had become a friend and one of Rocky's charity cases he was helping in his old age. Stallone owned the dog Butkus in the movie, and sold him to raise money to sell his script to the studios and the dog appeared in the movie as Rocky's dog. One of the first things Stallone did was buy back Butkus when he got a payday advance on the movie script and paid a lot more money to buy him back. Stallone still owns the turtles as of the last report on them... turtles live a long time. Also Adrian is the actress that played the daughter of the Godfather in that movie that opens with her wedding.
This is not true. This is a misconception that arose when, in 2019, Stallone posted a pic on Instagram of himself with the turtles while filming Creed 2. They were in fact the same turtles, but Stallone does not own them and never did. They are owned by Joseph Marks and John Stuart, who owned the pet shop they lived in. You can find the interview with the owners from 2006 by doing a Google search for "Rocky's turtles go the distance", article written by Michael Klein.
As I've seen another person comment this film was inspired by a real life fight!! I'm not sure that it was Daddy got the actual idea from seeing the fight but he did get motivated to finish his script, that I think he had already started, which was basically the love story!! Then he went to the Ali/Chuck Wepner fight and got the idea to Base it around boxing and Rocky's opportunity at the title!! In 1975, Muhammad Ali gave a relatively unknown fighter by the name of Chuck Wepner, a shot at the heavyweight title!! I was 18 years old in 1975 and I actually grew up in Bayonne New Jersey with Chuck Wepner is from!! I remember the hype leading up to the fight and I remember when he got his winnings he purchased the tavern in Bayonne that myself and friends would go to!! I met him a couple of times and he's actually still alive!!😮 Chuck's nickname was the "Bayonne Bleeder"😮 because of how easily he was cut during fights!! Very much like Rocky's face in THIS film!! There's actually a pretty good movie about Chuck Wepner, starring Liev Schreiber (Ray Donovan, if you're familiar with that character) called "Bleeder"! Chuck actually had a pretty rough time after he got the winnings from the Ali fight and he got himself in trouble selling drugs!! Anyway without giving away too much, that would be a good film!!
The vaseline is two fold. It keeps the skin elastic so it reduces the tear factor a punch but also helps the punch slide off the skin so it isn't a rough contact.
Saw this in a 69 mercury ( with fins).when it came out in 1978 at a drive In with my parents, at 8 years old. A great movie, a great memory, and is still today.❤
Burgess Meredith was also the dad in Grumpy Old Men and Grumpier Old Men!!! The dirty old guy with the great bloopers at the end!! He was also the Penguin in the Tv Batman series, and appeared in some Twilight Zone episodes.
Interesting you mentioned "Taxi Driver" because of the "is he talking to me?" line. "Rocky" won best picture in 1977 beating out, among others, "Taxi Driver". So, "Is he talking to me?" beat out "You talking to me?". Also, the two scenes of Rocky running up the Art Museum steps were filmed just a couple of hours apart.
He kept the turtles and still had them last I read fairly recently. Also the dog was his real life dog! He was broke before the movie became a hit and had to sell him for a few bucks. Stallone was broke and was shopping the script around, there was some interest but the studio's didn't want him to play the lead. He held out, and during that time sold his dog. When he finally got backing he went and bought back his dog - and yes it was the dog in the movie. Also, after the movie was shot Stallone kept the turtles as pets.
I think the end of the fight is intentionally ambiguous to illustrate that Rocky cares more about professing his love to Adrien than the he does the fight.
Trivia: So before this movie Clarence Weathers played Linebacker for the Oakland Raiders in the NFL (but wasn’t very good). Also the actor who played Rocky’s friend (Paulie) Burt Young was an actual Boxer in his younger days. And a good one at that.
a couple of points. I am sure if was known to Adriene that Rocky was an enforcer for the mob on top of her shyness. The vasoline is so that the punches slide off the face. Without it the gloves would would grip and tear the flesh when being punched.
You really should watch all of them they are all very good except maybe one of them i won't say which one but it's not the last one. Also the Creed movies are very good and worth the watch.
Our baseball group went to Philly and we did the 'Rocky stair run'. You had to do two stairs at a time. There are 110 and they are WIDE. Stallone doing 3 at a time is impressive. 3/4 of the way up and you are pooped and I go to the gym and do cardio 4 to 5 times a week.
Can't wait till you get to my favorites: _Rocky III_ and _Rocky Balboa._ Since each story flows to the next, you should see all of them. Have you seen _Million Dollar Baby_ yet? Burt Young (Paulie) was a fighter in the military with a very good record.
Ironically, Burt Young who played Paulie as a drunken, annoying bum was a successful boxer in real life at both amateur and professional levels and was a Marine Corps veteran, but Sylvester Stallone never boxed in real life.
