In that year at the Oscars there were films considered authentic "heavyweights" such as "Taxi Driver", ""All the President's Men" and especially "Network", but they all had one point in common, they showed an American society in full decline , which was the time. "Rocky" meant hope. Perhaps taking into account the enormous value that it conveyed, it is that they gave him the award.

Let me tell my story about thes emovies. Stallone didn't have a good reputation back then, at leats in my country, and I think block buster movies like Rambo 2 and 3 were the reason why "Shoot first and think later" kind of mentality. As a kid the only Rocky movies I saw were 3 and 4, it was a bit cartoonish and focused on the boxe matches. And for decades I just thought it was "dumb" movies.
But one day, like 10 years ago, part 1 was playing on TV, and I watched it casually while doing other things, and as the film was playing I got more and more interested by it, like a magnet. I sat down and watched all the movie and was in awe. I couldn't believe how good it was, Rocky character was so believable, relatable and adorable to me and I fell in love with him. Luckily the channel was on a marathon playing all 5 movies at the time so I could watch the whole series and I never been so happy to be wrong on my initial thoughts. Today I own the movies on DVDs so I can watch them anytime. I think it is one of the best movie franchise. I also loved the Creed movies.

I love that Rocky takes all the classic boxing tropes and turns them right on their heads.
His boss, the leg-breaking loan shark, is actually a nice guy who cares about Rocky's boxing career and would never extort him. His coach is only inspirational after spending most of the movie talking complete crap to Rocky. His best friend is an abusive, drunken bum who is more of a burden than anything. His true love is a shy, homely pet shop girl who is smart, awkward and a bit of an ugly duckling.
And Rocky brings out the best in ALL of them! Simply because of who he is as a man and all the heart he has deep down, they all end off better than when the story began. That is the genius of Rocky as a screenplay and a movie. True classic!
And finally, let's not forget the most important detail. Rocky won, even though he lost by decision. Because all he really wanted was to go the distance and be the man he felt Adrian deserved.

Mickey talked "crap" because Rocky lacked discipline and focus. He had no plan.. boxing was more like a hobby. Before the first fight with Creed he would have been a waste of Mickey's time. Mickey did right not to coddle him. Being a nice guy is never enough in life.

The line was ' no one has ever been the distance with Creed ' !
The backstory to this movie is even more inspirational than the movie.
Sylvester Stallone was pretty much a struggling actor. He was so broke he had to sell his dog to eat. Wrote the whole screenplay in his flat, the film producers offered him over 250 grand to buy the script but he wanted to be in the movie. They wouldn't agree because he was unknown and wanted someone famous. He wouldn't back down so in the end they agreed but only for about 25000. He immediately went to find the guy he sold his dog to who didn't want to sell it back to him, so he ended up buying his dog back for thousands of dollars and the dog is the dog in the movie ! ( the guy he sold the dog to may have been given a small part too ). The movie was filmed in about 28 days, won the oscar for best movie and the rest is history

Just as an FYI, while $40.55 sounds like very little for winning a fight (and it is), this was filmed in 1976. So given the rise of inflation and what the dollar was worth back then, he was getting paid the Equivalent of $205.05. Not great, but not bad either.
The other guy got paid $17, which is the the equivalent of $85.96. Big difference.
Also, for the fight against Creed, Rocky was going to get paid, $150,000, which again is the equivalent of $758,492.81 (all the money estimates are based on Jan. 1976 to Jan. 2022 calculation)

I'm not asked to throw fights but with some I'm told not to go for kos to go distance etc, or work an opponents weak point they're working on. N I'm paid £500 a round. Usually 2.5k a fight. If u think thats alot then I'd say u never boxed in your life. Its not just 15 minutes in a ring in my case, Theres weeks of conditioning, have to maintain a certain level of ability and you get injured. I think a lot of folk forget how well written this movie is, and that Stallone wrote it. Or how good an actor he actually is (this and also for example, First Blood). This movie was also directed by the guy who directed the first three Karate Kid movies.

    • @WildWombats
      @WildWombats 2 года назад

He went to great lengths, in many cases his boxing was only half-acting, the other half was real, this is especially true as the series carries on. Stallone really preferred to make the fights more real because he felt people would know if it was faked. He went so far, it is said in the Ivan Drago match, he pulverized him and he had to go to the ER, but that he didn't feel it in the moment. So a lot of the punches are not necessarily pulled, and are genuine punches. I believe he went out of his way to encourage this even. Another example, when Hulk Hogan threw him out the ring, that injured him as well. The man truly took one for the team. But maybe that's what makes it such a masterpiece is the heart and soul put into it.

"First Blood" is an embarrassment. Stallone, himself, admits throwing out most of the crap he wrote and spouted in the first run through. What remains is the tripe that made it to final edit so one can imagine how bad the initial cut was. As far as "Rocky" is concerned , Stallone should have resisted the big pay days offered by cynical sequel madness. Sad real-life tale of greed and its corrupting influence.

Rocky pulled her out of her shell and now she has the courage, for the first time in her life, to stand up for herself. That, along with the scene where Rocky is yelling in his doorway, are really the two best scenes in the movie. I'd add the scene where Rocky is lying in bed the night before the fight as really powerful too. Honestly one of the most important films at the time. America was really going through a period of economic hardship. This film was exactly what this country needed at the time. What makes this film all the more wholesome was that Stallone himself put his entire heart into writing the script. This was his one shot for an acting career and boy did it pay off. Rocky remains to be one of America’s most inspirational films. A story that mirrored Stallone’s struggling life and came from the heart and it still continues to inspire millions everyday.

One of film’s great misunderstandings, Rocky isn’t a boxing movie, Rocky is a love story with boxing in it. A story about believing in yourself and loving yourself.
Rocky’s character and the challenges he faces is the heart of every movie. That’s my many didn’t like the fifth movie so much as the challenge Rocky faces isn’t quite as good as the others (and the opponent is just as ass).

This is the story of a man with a chance to make something of himself in more ways than one. Stallone wrote this movie with the intent of playing the part of Rocky. But when his agent shopped the script around to all the various producers and studios none of them wanted Stallone to play the lead. Stallone and his agent held firm and finally got a low budget deal to make the film. Stallone gets a bad rap for being dim or slow but he was smart enough to hold out for what he wanted and worked for. Rocky is one of the greatest films of our time.

Nothing wrong with 5 and 6. There is the same heart, and character driven moments throughout all the films. One and Two are the best, but they are all good. Stallone turned down $300,000 for the script because they didn't want him to star in it. And at a time when he was struggling to pay rent and he had to give up his dog. But stuck to his principles and got a studio to buy the script and let him star.
" When I was 26, totally broke, going nowhere VERY fast, owned two pair of pants that barely fit, shoes that had holes in them and dreams of being successful were as far away as the sun… But I had my dog, BUTKUS, my best friend, my confidant, Who always laughed at my jokes, and put up with my moods, and was the one living thing that loved me for who I was!"
"Since we're on the subject of " man's best friend" this is myself and Butkus as a puppy , we were both , thin , hungry and living in a flophouse above a subway stop, I used to say this apartment had " … Hot and cold running roaches" anyway there was not much to do except spend time with each other and that's where I started to learn the craft of screenwriting. Since I never went out, I relied on his companionship , And actually it was his idea to write Rocky, but don't tell anyone…. Years later when things got even worse I had to sell him for $40 in front of a 7-Eleven store, because I couldn't afford food, then like A modern day miracle, the screenplay for Rocky sold, and I could buy and buy him back, but the new owner knew I was desperate, and charged me $15,000 … He was worth every penny!"

....but that's not the point. Rocky got one good shot when he was at rock bottom and it let him get his life back on track, get confidence in himself again, and even find love with the girl he'd been crushing on. He won in all the ways that really mattered.

I've noticed sometimes younger viewers struggle understanding those types of relationships. Paulie has a lot of baggage but brings some positives as well, often when it's needed most. And Mick's anger towards Rocky isn't because he's a jerk but because he sees the potential that Rocky had been wasting. A big part of what makes the series great is that those kind of relationships continue to develop throughout. TBR: "I don't know if I've ever seen a more inspirational montage."
    Rocky 4: "Hold my beer."
As an 80's baby, it always brings a smile to my face, when I see younger generations genuinely enjoy the movies I grew up with. As a great fan of the Rocky and Karate Kid movies, I can't wait for your reactions to Rocky 2-5 and Rocky Balboa ("part 6"), as well the Cobra Kai series.
I would also recommend, Cobra, which is another Stallone movie, Bloodsport, Enter the Dragon, Lone Wolf McQuade and Cinderella Man.

11:25, fun fact: The turkey throw in the alley was done so many times, it tore the turkey up it had to be retide and Burt Young had to be careful eating it. You can get this in the DVD commentary with most of the stars talking about it while the movie is playing. When DVDs had extras to watch.

There is so much humanity written into the character of Rocky. Viewers usually tend to dislike a character that is an enforcer. We all forgive him for that early on because we see his humanity again and again. Anyone who thinks Stallone wasn't a good writer should consider that.

Rocky is about all those throwaway people you never think about. A failing boxer wannabe, a super shy plain Jane, a drunk factory worker that hates everything, a loanshark with a heart of gold, a trainer that never made it as a fighter or trainer, and others. You look at their lives and assume there is nothing to them. Many of them just never had even the glimmer of a chance to get out of their environment.
This movie is a love story, but it's also an inspirational story if you feel like the world is always kicking you in the teeth after it knocks you down.

Living in the inner city compromises a lot of people. Sometimes you end up doing things you wouldn’t normally do just to survive. But there is also this underlying strength to these people. Tensions run high when there is this much pressure to just get by. Many of these people were the best people I ever met. When I had nothing, it was not uncommon to have someone invite me to dinner, even when they really didn’t have that much themselves. Rocky epitomizes the heart of the underdog. It’s really quite beautiful

Fun note: The steady cam was invented for this movie. Before cameras had to be mounted on a rail system or vehicle. This is why you get the iconic stair run, fighting in the ring etc.... The camera man went on to create the company that creates all the video for sporting events. All of the overhead and odd angles are from his camera company.
Star Wars and Rocky were released 6 months apart, across 1976 and 1977 and had MASSIVE impacts on the film industry for their innovations.

I think Rocky is first and foremost a love story and I can't think of too many I'd rank higher. It's about a boxer, not so much about boxing itself. Rocky deals with themes and lofty concepts that aren't terribly groundbreaking. The engine that actually drives the film is that it handles them so damn well. The fact that Rocky doesn't technically win the fight is somehow far more satisfying. He had the heart and resolve to go the distance regardless of the odds. He finds his soulmate in Adrian. How does all that stack up against actually winning the match? Rocky comes out the winner because he achieves the things in life that matter most.
