Definitely need to watch the Karate Kid trilogy before watching Cobra Kai.
Pat Morita was nominated for an Oscar for best supporting actor for his performance. (he based a lot of the character on his father, his broken speech patterns, Pat himself was born and raised in Southern California)
Pat Morita , along with his family, was forced into a Japanese internment camp during WW2, just like the character he played in the movie. His family lost their business, house and all their belongings . He was also paralyzed as a child for years and had experimental back surgery which allowed him to walk again.

The revelation of what happened to Miyagi's wife and son is still heartbreaking over thirty years later. In a way, Daniel 'became' the son Miyagi had lost.

It is a great sequel, at a time when sequels were usually known to be fairly crappy. I don’t hate Karate Kid 3, it’s not as good as I & II, but they should probably watch it if they ever decide to watch Cobra Kai.
part 2 was perhaps the best of the original trillogy
KK2 gets a really bad rap, but I think it´s the best of the trilogy. For my money, Cobra Kai does it the other way round (great Season 1, poor Season 2, AWESOME Season 3...about to start Season 4!).
Fun fact: Ralph Macchio still has the car. The judge for the final match Pat Johnson is the martial arts instructor for the cast & crew who gave Cobra Kai & Miyagi-Do different styles: for Cobra Kai it's Tang Soo Do & for Miyagi-Do it's Goju Ryu. Also "You're the Best Around" was almost the theme song for Rocky III instead of "Eye of the Tiger"
Forgot to mention that the scene where Miyagi is drunk and Daniel basically tucks him in and he finds his Medal of Honor and the letter about his wife and child really sums up how important they become to each other. They're way more than teacher/student or even friends. They quickly fall into a father/son relationship, something both of them need.
Incredibly, the studio wanted Avildsen to cut that scene. He refused. It was the right choice.

Miyagi and is the real given name of Pat Morita’s brother, can be seen stamped in reverse on his World War II dog tags, being used as a keychain for the car he gives Daniel as a birthday present.
Fun fact... the SpaceX Launch tower at Boca Chicca the catching arms are called " Chop Sticks " after the fly catching part in the movie....
Elizabeth Shue was back in college by the time "Karate Kid II" started filming, so she was written out of the rest of the films, but if you want to see another great 80's movie she starred in (that doesn't get enough love), you should check out "Adventures in Babysitting" from 1987. It's an absolute classic.
College? She chose to do the movie Cocktail with Tom Cruise instead of KK2
@@burntvirtue "Cocktail" came out 2 years after "Karate Kid II." She was finishing college during that time. It was an easy decision for her to make because she was not happy with her intended role in "Karate Kid II" (she was being written out regardless) and two of her other films that were already completed -- "Link" and "Adventures in Babysitting" -- were being released in the meantime.
But don't watch Adventures in Babysitting via Disney+ - it's slightly edited/censored there

Classic?? Up there with gone with the wind? One flew over the cuckoo's nest? The defiant ones? Forrest Gump? Adventures in babysitting is not a classic. Maybe a great movie but...
29:05 The ending wasn't supposed to be that abrupt. The script had an epilogue where Miyagi deals with Kreese after the tournament. But John G. Avildsen thought the movie didn't need that and felt that the extra scene could be saved for a sequel. So they did a pickup shot of Miyagi's closeup and that was the ending they went with. They made the right call since the parking lot scene works pretty well as an opener for Part II.
Agreed. Might seem abrupt but it's also like Rocky ending. Match ends, movie ends and it's perfect.
it doesn't just work well for the opening, but it's a great call back later in the film and sets up part 3
I always felt there should have been an epilogue scene with Daniel and Ally walking along the beach where everything started and they see Johnny with his boys and there's a sign of respect between him and Daniel.
Never Back Down actually had an ending like that seeing that it was basically a spiritual remake of this one.
Especially with how the parking lot scene echoes the final scene of Part II. All in all a good choice.

Mr Miyagi...sensei, father figure, medal of honor war hero, philosopher...One of the best character in all of cinema, he is just the best !! RIP Pat Morita...
"No such thing as bad student, only bad teacher." Such a simple line, but it has a lot of power behind it and reverberates throughout the entire story of these characters. You're in for a great ride.
It's kind of the entire principle of what they explore in Cobra Kai.
It's a stupid line, cuz it straight up isn't true. There are DEFINITELY bad students.
@@MrParkerman6 I don't agree that the line is stupid, but I also think there are probably some bad students out there (although I do believe truly bad students are far rarer than bad teachers).
That said, whether Miyagi's statement is wholly true or not isn't really pertinent; the idea that a teacher's missteps or failings (whether as a teacher or just their own personal issues) can or will manifest negatively in their students is an integral story aspect of entire Karate Kid franchise from the first movie all the way into Cobra Kai.

Mr. Miyagi and Daniel is one of the greatest character relationships in the history of cinema. Hits you hard in so many ways.

33:32 Bobby was definitely the most conflicted and honorable of the Cobra Kais. He's the one who tells Johnny that Daniel's been beaten up enough after they chase him out of the dance. There's a deleted scene where he walks off in disgust past Kreese after he's forced to take Daniel out with the illegal kick. If you notice closely, he's never seen in the background when Johnny and Daniel are fighting at the end. And given the career path he takes when he reappears in Cobra Kai, you can tell he was a decent guy all along.

But at the end, Johnny said, "You're alright, Larusso. Good match," as he handed Daniel the first place trophy. Maybe they wouldn't have become friends, but I think they would have at least left on good terms.

It's really funny because of how his character was in Cobra kai lmao
I like the way each of them have holes in their hearts from the absence of a family member. They understand each other’s pain.
That whole scene with Daniel throwing his bike in the trash and then following conversation with his mom was all a one-shot. And much of the emotional stuttering and raw energy was due to Ralph forgetting his lines and ad-libbing to make up for it.
But it ended up being an amazingly well done scene with fantastic acting through a wide range of emotions.
I was a kid when I saw this at the movies. Daniel landing the crane kick at the end was one of those rare moments where I can remember an entire movie theatre collectively holding their breath, then breaking out into applause at the same time.
I remember seeing this in the theatre. It's nice to see young people have the same reaction I did as a young man. Great reaction as always, guys. R.I.P. Pat Morita.
R.I.P... Rob Garrison, best known for playing the role of Tommy.....
Garrison, whose character shouted the famous quote "Get him a body bag!" appeared in both The Karate Kid and The Karate Kid Part II alongside Macchio, and also appeared in one episode of Cobra Kai's second season.
Saw this in theatre too...i was 9. My favorite movie of all time . no matter how many times I watch it ...the endimg always gets me still! Get a little choked up. Great inspirational movie.
I’m old as balls and was a kid when this came out. We actually watched this in elementary school on a real film print. This was before the invention of DVD. As I said I’m old as balls 🤪

This is such a feel good movie. Pat and Ralph’s on screen chemistry is so powerful. Wish everybody had a teacher like Mr. Myagi.
I hate how they laugh at a serious scene...Daniel dropping to his knees is not funny...it's meant to show how naive he is to the training he got while sanding waxing painting...your suppose to be intense and in it like he is listening to Miyagi fed up showing him never to doubt his mentor after drinking...
Pat’s performance when Ralph comes back from the country club is amazing.

Wife and I watched Season 4 on Friday. Wanted Season 5 on Saturday. The writers are geniuses.
To this day Mr. Miyagi’s back story makes me tear up. From his birth, to the war and to his wife and child dying. And on top of all, the guy has a freaking Medal of Honor! Makes you think how humble this man is! He could easily have had all the PTSD from the war and have all the hate towards the world because of the way he lost his wife and child and take out his anger towards anyone who crossed paths with him knowing he has real world life and death martial arts skills plus war and survival training… it’s insane! But instead he chose to stay focused, humble and loving thanks to the upbringing his father and mother gave him. In his heart he is simply a fisherman. Pat Morita’s performance in that scene still gives me chills. No doubt that scene must have to get him the Oscar nomination!
(Also wanted to add: Please react to Karate Kid Part ll. To me it is the perfect sequel to this story by going the opposite direction in every way as far as characters goes by focusing on Mr. Miyagi and proving his student can handle real life scenarios with his training by tagging along. As he adapts to the struggles of the world and not over doing his fighting skills. People forget that this movies focuses on self defense when life situations come your way. They are NOT supposed to be Stephen Segal or Van Damme movies.)
plus when you take into account how the US treated Asian Americans in the war inturning them in camps and the like the fact he won the medal of honour is even more touching
Mr Miyagi's wife was put into an internment camp along with other Japanese Americans in WWII. She may have died due to inferior medical care there, all while he was fighting for America earning a medal of valor.

You have no idea how the “Cobra Kai” show continues the story. It is so original and good. Best show I ever saw.
Cobra Kai is excellent. If you enjoyed this you will love the series. It is so well done. Cobra Kai could have gone too cheesy but they got the nostalgia vs new story balance perfect. You have to watch all the original movies to get all the callbacks and guest characters though. Cobra Kai takes up the story in the present day with the same main actors.
I recommend watching the first season. Maybe do a watch along on the channel

Cobra Kai is fantastic, but after season 1 you definitely need to watch the Karate Kid trilogy to get everything.
Love these Karate Kid movies. The Cobra Kai series is fun and nostalgic but the acting is horrendous. Especially from the younger actors. Yikes.
I agree. I just binge watched the 4th season and it was great. I haven't seen the third karate kid movie because everyone seems to agree it's pretty bad, but it's not necessary to enjoy Cobra Kai. Some idiots diss the acting and the plots but they obviously don't love the original movie or know anything about writing.
This is still one of the best martial arts films ever. This modern version of the ancient master-student relationship is so well done. Miyagi's wise life lessons should be taken to heart.
Some comment on how fast the ending is really no epilogue like 1 minute after the crane kick it ends but it's meant to inspire so when you finished the film kids could run out the theater happy....I prefer that unique approach...not every film needs 3-5 minutes added on to explain stuff afterwards..that's not what it was about...we can't top that crane kick daniel saying we did it and the miyagi final shot..it's too perfect with johnny even humbling himself and ali celebrating...we saw how everyone important in the film was there and their facial reactions to stuff..we understand we don't need dialogue or an extra post trophy scene flash forward...the film ends perfectly...not every film needs to end abrupt but this one did...it's an inspiring moment in time where everything went well let's end on the hype
Loved this movie when it first came out, I remember seeing it in the theater. The relationship between Daniel and Miyagi is definitely the center of this movie. What's most notable, I think, is that after Daniel is there for Miyagi's bender on his anniversary, both actors do such a great job of conveying the real vulnerability Miyagi had in those moments, and Daniel's respect for what happened to him. That part of the movie makes me cry every damn time, not just because it's sad, but it's also touching at how much it deepens their friendship. Daniel has seen Miyagi at his worst, and been there to catch him on the way down, without judgement. We should all be so lucky to have a friend like that.

Back in 1984, this movie had a huge impact on high school and young adult boys. It's hard to explain. This movie was so popular and was so influential. I think it made boys who felt bullied feel some hope that they can stand up for bullyism. The lessons of this movie were wide and profound and while, it didn't change the world, I believe it instilled in many young men an example of what a real man is supposed to be like with a sense of what honor and respect are.
Growing up in the early 80s myself, I can relate to the gulf between the kids that had money and those who didn't. Consumerism reached a fever pitch in the 80s. In high school, the brand of clothes were important. The sunglasses, the shoes, the watch, everything. The kind of car was important. The neighborhood was important. It was hard if you didn't have money to not look like you didn't have money. You might save up for a while from a job to afford a Ralph Lauren or Izod polo shirt, or for a pair of Calvin Klein jeans. It was crazy. So, it was nice back then to see a rich girl like a poor boy over other rich boys. Hope. That was this movie gave boys.
I grew up in the 80's and agree with everything you said. It sucked being a girl. We had to deal with all that shit too...😒

This was such a heartwarming and genuinely real reaction that it at times made me tear up. Back in the day when this film came out (I’m an 80’s child) I was the focus of bullies, and as such this film really meant a lot to me. I really loved how it showed that someone can stand up to their bullies and come out on top of it. It has, and always will be one of my all-time favorite films. The second part for me though was even slightly better. Can’t say why that is yet, as I don’t want to spoil the second movie for you guys. But yeah, this was a great and wonderful reaction and it truly made my sunday a lot better. Looking forward to seeing you watch part 2 😊
I love this trilogy, and absolutely love the Cobra Kai Netflix series. If you enjoy the movies, and you should watch the trilogy first, then you will love Cobra Kai.
The fourth movie, The Next Karate Kid, is worth a watch for a young Hilary Swank, but otherwise is not needed for the Karate Kid universe.
So far we loved the first movie and excited to watch the second!

The Cobra Kai series is still ongoing. Which means, characters that were in all four movies, could still make appearances on that show. So in my opinion, you have to watch the 4th movie just in case
I saw this in ‘84, and have always thought it was one of the best sports films ever, as well as one of the best teen films ever. I think my favorite moment, though, was the bow Daniel gave Mr, Miyagi after finding out his story-a wonderful show of respect in such a simple gesture.
26:55 Vidal was actually heavily involved behind the scenes too. He helped create the Crane Kick and even doubled for Pat Morita during the film. It's actually him on the post the first time Daniel sees Miyagi doing the crane kick.
I always found it interesting that Ralph Macchio was 4 years OLDER than William Zabka. Daniel looks so much smaller and younger than Johnny, but in real life, Macchio would be graduating from High School around the same time Zabka was still in Junior High.
'Crossroads' with Ralph Macchio is worth a watch. Karate kid formula but with a blues guitarist. Happy new year.

As a teen from the 80's we always knew we were in a Golden Age, of sorts, particularly with regard to Music and Film. Looking back now it is truly remarkable just how many still stand up to modern scrutiny and are in fact excellent to this day. Even some of those that have dated, are in some ways timeless.
Compared to recent Hollywood dross it is like a different world entirely. I was 16 on release: The Target Audience
I think when mr. Miyagi said "Karate here, karate here, karate never here." he actually meant that karate should be in the mind and in the soul, but not in the belly, meaning not out of anger and/or ego.
It was like watching the movie again for the first time with you guys. I had just turned 18 when it came out and now a few month shy of 56. My feelings about this movie have never changed and both of expressed them so well.Thank you so much for this great reaction!
You must see Part 2 and Part 3, and then watch the Netflix series. So far, season 3 has been by far my favorite. You'll be amazed at how you feel about Johnny and Daniel when you're just a few episodes into the series. And the kids? Argh! Remember, there are no bad students.

Great movie, and a staple from my childhood. In the mid-80s they had a handful of this type of hugely popular, feel-good, funny, action-packed movies with heart: Karate Kid, Back to the Future, Goonies and Ghostbusters, all coming out within a couple of years of each other. Add those to other iconic 80s films - Indiana Jones trilogy, Empire Strikes Back & Return of the Jedi - what a time for movies!
As a person born in the 1980's, I fully agree. Movies of this time period were really magical experiences for people and a majority of the titles you named continue to excite audiences both young and old.
Such a great movie, the movie has a lot of heart and a lot of great lessons.
31:38 The confusion is because of a deleted scene. Ali tries to explain what happened at the country club to Daniel but he doesn't want to hear it. So he tries to apologize later. Something to that effect.
But as an audience we already know that it was a misunderstanding and she was not in the wrong so we don't need that clarification....Daniel saw the worst in her cause he's self loathing and selfish he overreacted....he should of known her better...she's not like that...he's wrong 100%...the guy reacting should know this..how do you keep a girl being that naive
@@razkable Put yourself in Daniel's shoes. Your crush is running late to your date then you them kissing their ex lover. I'd be pretty heated to. Daniel already has a lot of insecurities about their different incomes and seeing that basically confirmed it for him. Also it's not like he knew Ali all that well it's only been a few months. Plus they're TEENAGERS teens have many misunderstandings. You seem to have a biased opinion on Daniel already.
This is one of the very first movies I remember ever watching (along with The Princess Bride). The first two movies are absolute classics. The third is generally panned as being awful, but it does help finish up Daniel's story (until Cobra Kai). The Next Karate Kid, as well as the Jackie Chan version of The Karate Kid are completely unnecessary to watch.

The 3rd one isn´t that bad. It´s a masterpiece compared to 4 and the Will Smith son karate kid
@@Timo8.2. III has absolutely trash reviews through Rotten Tomatoes. I know that site isn't exactly the best metric for finding good movies, but it's widely regarded as being awful.
@@PixelatedH2O Yea but it's still better than the 4th and the trash movie with Will Smith's son. I don't really care what the critics say or rotten tomatoes. It's not the greatest movie but it isn't the worst. It's a little too similar to the first with the tournament at the end
Trilogy is a definite yes. The Next Karate Kid has Mr. Miyagi so even though it's not as good as the others it's still worth watching as it may still be continued in the Cobra Kai series.

This movie had one of the best 80s vibes than any other film from that time period. Born in the mid 70s, grew up in the 80s, I really miss the good ole' days so bad.
The "shoulder trick" was a godsend to anyone who had to take care of younger family. Anytime they got a little bump or bruise that would cause crying this stopped it.
Just binge watched the entire 4th season of Cobra Kai today.

@@TBRSchmitt how they wrote ali both as part of the main plot conflict and her full support of daniel with some complex miscommunication that felt natural prrobably was super underrated but its only cause of that relationship not lasting past that film so everyone forgets her a little cause it didn't last...they make her change into a total jerk in 2...even if that may be daniel lying a little

not hard to believe. 99.9% of the "highschool students" in movies or tv shows are not even close to that age. Sydney (real name escapes me)from Scream was close to 30 and had a daughter that was almost 10. Sarah Michelle Gellar was 27 in first season of Buffy and was playing a 10th grader if im not mistaken. The list goes on and on.

The directing, acting and cinematography are great. I would be interested to see if you both can connect with the different symbolisms that this movie dishes out. Also...if you haven't seen them, Gran Torino, Field Of Dreams, On Golden Pond, Rain Man, Million Dollar Baby, The Hateful Eight, Driving Miss Daisy and the Rocky franchise would be awesome to see your reactions to. It's so crazy how many reactors are missing out on this series and Cobra Kai on Netflix. So glad you started it. Def do part 2 and 3 and the show.
This is in my top 10 movies of all time. It’s just a near perfect movie. I love it so much. The first 2 movies are great. The 3rd isn’t very good (when compared to the first two) but not as bad as some say. You should still watch all 3 if you are going to watch the Cobra Kai series which I think you will both love if you enjoy the movies.
The 80s is a decade where I feel like the actual best films are not Oscar-bait movies, but just entertaining movies with a lot of heart, good acting, and flawless storytelling. The Karate Kid definitely holds up and does everything right. Some of top 10 movies from the 80s are Back to the Future, The Terminator, The Untouchables, Predator, Robocop, and Highlander and none of these films (except for The Untouchables) were remotely recognized the Academy and even Untouchables was mostly technical categories.

Beautiful decade! All the feels! It's nothing without Top Gun, Flashdance and this! Miyogi or Miyagi was our treasure!
The best thing about that decade is that even years later you can discover more awesome things that were happening in the world that you weren't aware of. Most western audiences only watch Hollywood movies, but Hong Kong action was also on a roll back then.
THE KARATE KID was instrumental in influencing the game franchise MORTAL KOMBAT with Kreese shouting "FINISH HIM" among other touches to the games.
Similar to Rocky, you have these small movies with totally untested casts and crew, no real budget, but there is **heart** behind them and they become cultural touchstones. That was one amazing part of the 1980's.
If you loved this movie you’d love the others and Cobra Kai. It’s the best tv continuation of any movie series. It’s definitely worth watching all of it.
Ralph Maccio really looks like a teenage in this movie. It is hard to believe he was already in his 20s.
Oh yeah, this is one of the iconic films of the 1980s, and was one of the first Hollywood films to emphasize the spiritual side of martial arts rather than the action.
I get what you mean about the ending being abrupt, but they pretty much said what they needed to say with what little was there. The script originally had a denouement of sorts, but those scenes were cut before filming - don't worry though, they became the opening scenes of the sequel!
Two things... The Unit that Miyagi served in was the most decorated unit in US Military history.
Ralph Macchio still has the yellow convertible.

This movie gets me emotional when i watch it. The parts with the best music training on the beach and the tournament at the end I get teary eyed even now. I'm in my 40's 😂. Just such a classic. I love that it ends with Mr Miyagi smiling abruptly
Not too many young adults today will probably understand how they start their car by "popping the clutch".
The ending was very similar to Rocky in how abrupt it is. That's another influential movie that should be on your list.

You guys should definitely watch the sequel. I always found it much more dramatic because of the plot (if I'm remembering correctly). Their friendship gets developed even more.
Before this movie was made, the heads of Columbia Pictures did not want Pat Morita as Mr. Miyagi. They thought he was just a comedian. Many Asian actors were given auditions, but none of them had what the director was looking for in that character. Thankfully, the director asked Mr. Morita to read as Mr. Miyagi, and he did an excellent job as the character he got the part. The director wanted Pat and Ralph to read a scene together, and had fantastic chemistry.
Ralph Maccio said he was given that old yellow convertible after the movie was made, and he still has it. Both Ralph Maccio and Pat Morita had a long friendship together. Sadly, Pat Morita died a few years ago.
Ralph was 22 years old when he made this movie. 30 when he did My Cousin Vinny. You should definitely see 'The Outsiders' if you haven't.
I recall seeing this movie on TBS and TNT from time to time,and found it to be interesting. Pat Morita was known as a standup comedian rather than an actor, and I've read that there was uncertainty about if he would work out. For this movie, Ralph Macchio was the veteran, and Pat Morita the novice. I had seen Martin Kove on "Cagney and Lacey on TV, and his intense portrayal as a "show no mercy" martial arts instructor was riveting. Local Karate instructors were less than thrilled at the "colorful exercises" that "Miyagi-san" had "Daniel LaRusso" practice. The revelation that "Mr. Miyagi" was a 442nd RCT veteran was interesting, considering that Pat Morita had been in an Internment camp during World War II.
I think Pat Morita built that back story to show that he was All-American, which was the sentiment of many Asians of that era.

My older sister was born in Wisconsin, and i in 1948. He was about the same age as Marion Morrison, who opted to advance his Hollywood career to A movie roles. So I have very mixed feelings about John Wayne and World War II service.

Pat Morita had like 15 year career in movies and tv series at this point so he wasn´ some rookie. It was more about him being in Happy Days which he had a comedic role. I have no idea where you got your info that Ralph Macchio was the veteran and Pat Morita was the novice which couldn´t be farther from the truth

I watched this in the theater, and in the pop culture of the time, Pat Morita was well known as Arnold, owner of the local drive-in restaurant bearing the character's name, on Happy Days. (In fact, when this movie came out, everyone was like, "Hey, where did Arnold get that accent?" lol) I didn't know about a stand-up career, at all. Although at the time, there were a few TV shows that would showcase stand-up comedians doing a brief set, for different reasons (contest, variety show, etc.). it's possible I may have seen him on one of these, but if so, definitely as a guest host or novelty, 'Mr Myagi'/'Arnold' doing stand-up. Not as a regular stand-up comic.
I miss the 1980's. we had the best music, and movies. even the video games as old as they are had something more. I was 15 when this came out. It hit a lot of chords with people. Glad you liked it so much.
Born in the 80's, grew up in the 90's, but I have always been pretty much obsessed with 80's culture. My favorite movie is Back to the Future, favorite band is Tears for Fears, cartoon is TMNT, and yes, I like big hair, haha. Wish I was a teen in those days for sure
When Samantha said "those are little kids!" at the beginning of the tournament - I took lessons with that kid in the tan gi when I first started taking karate in 1986.
This film came out when I was 12, and it got into martial arts. I studied at a dojo that taught a mixture of Judo and Tae Kwon Do. My mother put a bonzai tree patch on the back of my gi just like the one on Daniel's. And my name is Danial, as well. My sensei didn't call me Daniel-san, though, as that is a Japanese thing and my sensei was Korean. FYI: the -san thing is a unisex title meaning Mr./Ms. So, Mr. Miyagi is calling Daniel Mr. Daniel.

I remember seeing this movie for the first time in the early 2000s right when I was starting high school. Bought the soundtrack and would play it all day on my cd player. Thought it was the most relatable movie in terms of where I was at that time in my youth. Took Karate lessons at the local dojo in the San Fernando Valley(!). Got my orange belt during the winter time and thought I was hot stuff.
I got overly cocky and picked a fight with my bully from middle school. Didn't get a good kick in and was beat up. Mom was definitely not happy about it. Dad came home, heard the story from ma, gave me a talk about manhood and proud of standing up for myself. Then ma told him about me being suspended as a result of the fight. He stopped smiling, went into the garage and beat me senseless with jumper cables.

Thanks to your channel and these reactions I’m able to relive my childhood vicariously through you guys. It’s been a long time since I’ve watched this movie and there are so many scenes I’ve forgotten. B/c of RUclips and the more memorable clips you tend to forget some of the more intimate scenes between Daniel and Mr Miyagi or the scenes with Daniel and his mother. It really was a special film.

Looking forward to the Part II reaction! It's a wonderful sequel that really deepens Mr. Miyagi's character and honors the history of karate. And though Part III isn't as strong as the first two films, I think it's safe to say that most fans still love and adore it. If you do decide to get into Cobra Kai (you must; it's excellent and exciting!), you'll certainly want to have the entire trilogy under your belt! (As for The Next Karate Kid with Hilary Swank, it's not a great film, but it's now considered canon by many fans, thanks in large part to another beautiful performance by the late, great Pat Morita as Mr. Miyagi.)
I actually enjoyed "The Next Karate Kid". Not Oscar quality, but a lot of fun...and it put Hilary Swank on my radar!
Without spoiling much, Cobra Kai is a fantastic "30 years later" kind of direct sequel to this movie, but without ignoring the two sequels. WELL worth watching, especially being a fan of this movie. It's SO well made, too, AND it started as a RUclips Original.

I never see it mentioned anywhere but I think it's safe to say that the Kung-fu classic,"36 Chambers of Shaolin",definitely influenced the Karate Kid.
Particularly the whole concept of learning martial arts through manual labor comes from 36 Chambers.
Cobra Kai, the show, is really good. I actually went into all 4 seasons having not seen the original movies. Knew about them, knew of course Mr Miyagi, knew wax on wax off and knew about the Crane kick but beyond that had never seen them but have loved Cobra Kai.
It of course plays on nostalgia for the movies but does it so well that even not seeing the movies hasn't hurt any of those scenes for me. Almost cried during one of them even.
Now you have to watch part 2, one of my favorites. You’ll get a lot more of their relationship. Then watch part 3 the crazy fun one and you’re ready for Cobra Kai.
The scene where Miyagi is drunk and trying to explain what happened to his wife and child, gets me every time I watch this movie. As others have said, Pat Morita was nominated for an Oscar for this performance and like many others I think he should have won it. And yes, Pat Morita had no Japanese accent to speak of, he based the character (more or less) on his father (which others have also mentioned).
I saw this one in the theater when I was a kid. When he landed that crane kick to Johnny's face the audience literally stood up and cheered.

A martial arts movie that ISN'T insanely popular, but really good, is The Legend of Drunken Master. Personally, it's one of the most iconic martial arts films of all time, and it's some of Jackie Chan's best action. Another amazing. Movie is the Ip Man trilogy. If not all 3, *at least* do the first one.
They definitely need to check out ip man movies and the legend of the drunken Master ✌️❤️🙏

Hi. Great content. Love how you stick around afterward and actually discuss the movies that you watch unlike most movie reactors. When Mr.Miyagi is drunk in his uniform his toast is "Banzai" which was the Japanese battle cry. Daniel toasting "Bonsai ! Heres to little trees !" was a clever piece of writing in many ways. Comedic but showing cultural and age differences, Mr.Miyagi and how he now only uses Karate for self defence after the horrors of war etc. As a child of the 80's and 90's teen I enjoy peoples reactions to the movies that were my backdrop. Keep up the great work.

"The Outsiders" is another good Ralph Macchio movie to watch. There is a while list of known actors in that movie.
Great movie. One of my favorites growing up as a kid. The actor Ralph Macchio actually lives 10 minutes away from me in Long Island, NY. From what I hear he seems like an all around nice guy for the most part. Someone actually ran into him at a local supermarket right by my house where he was just buying some food. He's probably not like most celebrities since they don't always venture out into the public like that, but he's just like a regular everyday kinda guy despite being a famous actor.
I enjoy your reaction film reviews, but at 46 years old, I always feel like a displaced time traveler watching two grown married adults say they never watched so many iconic 80s and 90s movies. Is it really 2022? Sigh.

I just realized the sad meaning behind the line "Miyagi hate the fight": he served in the 442nd Infantry Regiment during WW2 while he was prisoner at the Manzanar internment camp. He's then informed that his wife and son died at childbirth? No wonder he hates fighting. That Medal of Honor he got afterwards was worthless since he already lost what was most important to him, the reward didn't mean nothing anymore. That's what makes his bond with Daniel so wholesome: he sees him as the son he was cruelly denied of having by chance. This movie has legit some good writing.
Check out 1987's "Adventures in Babysitting" with Elizabeth Shue in the lead, plus there are some other actors in supporting roles that are still working that will surprise you like a thin Vincent D'Onofrio as a garage mechanic.
