I remember having a classroom discussion about this movie and 'The Matrix'. The question was asked, "If you were guaranteed riches to keep quiet about the truth of reality, would you take the deal?". It blew my mind to see 70% of the class say they'd take the money. I took the course 10 years ago and that's always stuck with me.
It took me a while to watch this one. I had to keep rewinding to rewatch your reactions to so many scenes 😂😂. So glad you guys liked this, it made for one of the best reaction videos ever!!
I love this movie. I caught part of it on tv as a kid but we had to leave before the end. I never knew what movie it was. My friend in high school told me what it was based on my description and I found the VHS on eBay. It was so nice to see the whole movie. And I'm surprised you guys weren't familiar with the great Canadian Rowdy Roddy Piper.
South Park had a great parody of this fight scene in the fifth season episode "Cripple Fight". The fight between Jimmy Valmer and Timmy is based on the film's fight between John Nada and Frank Armitage, and the sounds and dialog from the film match almost perfectly with the animation. It's hilarious!!
The guy who played the revolutionary that you thought played a cop was Sy Richardson. He played Detective Wasserman in Bad Dreams with Jennifer Rubin, Bruce Abbott and Richard Lynch. Another underrated gem. I worked at a theater shoing this back in the day, and I absolutely loved the reaction to the fight. The older I get, the more the fight sense is realistic in these times when people have to be beaten down to see the truth behind the lies. And like a lot of Carpenter's works, it's a truly prophetic work of art.
I worked on a movie that was shot here in Montreal with Roddy, he was a really great guy all around. Keith David has one of the best animated voices ever as he voiced the iconic Goliath from the Gargoyles animated tv show and he also voiced Spawn for the HBO animated series.
"It's also kind of like when cities like, let's say, design benches or put up spikes to prevent homeless people from sleeping anywhere. But they don't actually address the problems that make those people homeless." Exactly. Homeless people shouldn't be treated like a problem. The problem is conditions--including the system itself--that make people homeless, and that's what demands a solution. This is the only reaction to this film I've seen that's shown even a hint of outrage at what humans do, instead of only making it unacceptable when it's aliens doing it to us.
Great reaction here is a Fun fact about this movie the fight scene in this movie is the longest fight scene in any movie plus Roddy Piper would write down his Promo's before he wrestled and the director like that so much that he allowed Roddy to use some of his 1 liner's in this movie aka Promo's. plus just before this Roddy Piper had his last match at Wrestle Mania 3 of a crowd of 93,000 in a attendance plus also on PPV shortly there after this movie was being made. As I watched your reaction to this film think of this as you look back when just less then 10 years ago when you had people living in tents near the street where there at times riots and people blocking highways to the interstate's as in protest and as you watched LIVE on the News cause back in the 80's or even 90's none of this went on just think of this a post Rapture where thing's will get a whole lot worse when you saw that pastor preaching the gospel in the open to people listening and as you saw you had hideouts where the believers would hide to get the message out to the unsaved people and how NEWS media is being controlled by 1 person aka Antichrist. If you think about what you saw that people that looked like dead people just a thought are the one's who either took the Mark of the beast aka chip to buy or sell stuff which means unsaved people and the one's who are hiding with the ones with glasses are the Believers and are spreading the message of CHRIST' return . Roddy Piper's name in this movie is NADA!.
John Carpenter wrote the screenplay under the pseudonym Frank Armitage. So you can basically see the social commentary he was trying to convey during the time Reagan was in office.
Oh and on a side note, one of the most under appreciated masterpieces Carpenter has done is Prince Of Darkness. What a scary atmospheric film, one of his best scores as well.
Roddy Piper was an interesting guy. You should check out the A&E biography about him sometime if you get the chance (I think it's here on RUclips). He was Canadian, grew up very poor and with a very tough life (moved constantly, always got in fights as the new kid, had a very abusive father), left home at a very young age (early teens), drifted around as a vagabond/homeless for awhile, dabbled in some petty crime and street life, wound up getting into professional wrestling and had all kinds of wild experiences during that part of his life. He was probably the greatest heel of the 80's, larger than life. A big part of Hulk Hogan's rise to fame was thanks to the rivalry with a heel Roddy Piper. Despite his rough upbringing and wild life, he seemed to be a good family man and stayed married to his wife through it all (which is rare for wrestlers, who are always on the road and have easy access to fast women and illicit substances). He always seemed pretty gracious to "normal" people too (when not playing a heel/kayfabe) unlike other wrestlers who get famous and let it go to their heads. RIP Hot Rod, Rowdy Roddy Piper!
Hi guys, longest fun fight scene in movie history, which was perfect for this gem. And of course Jen you were right (as usual) about Miss "freaky blue eyes". Lots of fun thanks.
If you never heard the one about the golden rule this might be new to you. Money won’t buy you justice, but the more money you have, the more justice you get.
I dint believe in lizard people or aliens among us but The 2025 line freaked me the hell out now that project 2025 is being implemented in real time. This and Idiocracy much too much on the nose. Looking forward to the next continuing reactions to Fallout.
there's this new horror book titled Wake Up and Open Your Eyes by Clay McLeod Chapman that kind of reminds me of this movie. It's about some sort of evil that spreads through media. People being controlled by the media they consume. Another movie with a similar concept is Await Further Instructions
Such a cool movie with social commentary. The only other movie fight that I can think of that’s over the top like this is the one in 48 Hours. I good catch on the Back To The Future connection mom. I don’t think any other reactor even came close to it. I used to confuse David Keith with Keith David all the time. John Carpenter’s Prince Of Darkness is cool and creepy.
Roddy was in several movies back then. The only one that comes to mind tho is Hell Comes to Frogtown. 😂 I love this movie. Full of great one liners and the greatest fight scene ever! And the irony of the 2025 date and the pathetic times we're in now! Anyway, as always, a fun reaction from you guys! 💯👏🏻👍🏻🕶
KURT RUSSEL!!!!! If you love💕him you’ve got to watch the movie: “OVERBOARD “with him and his lifelong girlfriend GOLDIE HAWN!! Really cute and funny!!!
Gotta watch all the Carpenters, up to Ghosts of Mars anyway, that and everything after is bad. Escape from NY, Assault on Precinct 13, Prince of Darkness, just a few you haven't done. All of them amazing. The bubblegum line was 'borrowed' by Duke Nukem too.

It's been said the infamous, extra-long fight scene represents the struggle for some people to accept the truth.
maybe, but it still goes on for way, way too long, and I always FF thru it.
@@RobertJuzstone I would never do that!
Nick's pure joy at discovering the origin of the bubblegum quote was probably the best part of this whole reaction.
😊
"They Live is a documentary" : Roddy Piper, main actor of the film. Died shortly after saying that.
Notice the tire screech when he first sees the "OBEY" sign.
That's an audio cue for the audience.

It's kinda scary how this movie is even more relevant and salient now than it was when it was made.
Meg Foster is already 76, but her eyes still shine! She must be an alien!

That whole fight scene was perfectly reproduced in an episode of South Park between Timmy and Jimmy.

John Carpenter wrote the screenplay under the pseudonym Frank Armitage. So you can basically see the social commentary he was trying to convey during the time Reagan was in office.
Rowdy Roddy Piper kept a notebook of sayings that he could use in his wrestler persona. So they picked out a few and used them in the movie.
The long fight sequence represents how hard it is to get someone to view a new perspective or truth.
Excellent point!
Oh and on a side note, one of the most under appreciated masterpieces Carpenter has done is Prince Of Darkness. What a scary atmospheric film, one of his best scores as well.

"Rowdy" Roddy Piper, was great in this. And yes, this movie is a cult classic, that has basically become prophetic.

In a similar vein is The Arrival, in which you can see Charlie Sheen looking very much like Dr. Gordon Freeman from Half-Life.
Good grief, learn punctuation and riots etc most definitely did happen in the 80's and 90's, nonsense.
