  • Tummo is an ancient meditation technique practiced by monks in Tibetan Buddhism. Tummo exists of a combination of breathing and visualization techniques, used to enter a deep state of meditation that is used to increase a person’s ‘inner heat’. This inner heat enables someone to control ones body temperature, for example keeping the body warm in cold conditions. Some people say Wim Hof is a practitioner of Tummo, but The Wim Hof Method and Tummo are comparable but different techniques. In this video, Wim Hof explains the difference.

    Never heard of tummo but I’ve been using your method since shortly after my injury(global TBI, grade 3 aortic rupture were most sever injuries)
    It’s helped me to regain feeling in my legs. Just amazing. I’m still paralyzed but I’ve been making slow steady progress which has undoubtedly been helped along by the breathing.

      @@RazzoAratey Apologies if I'm assuming too much, but both of you should seek a therapist, if you don't have one. While I really like the Wim Hof and his method, this space is sorta cult-adjacent. Wim Hof isn't a cult leader, he has no interest in that and seems kind-hearted, but people around him want to make him into one. It fits several of the signs of a cult (group focused around a charismatic living leader, the leader is seen as having special/spiritual knowledge or power of some kind, group is preoccupied with bringing in new members and money, doubt and dissent are punished by other members of the group). You being so drawn to him is a red flag that you might still be susceptible to falling for another cult.

    • @Joyride37

      @@TheGrumbliestPuppy I agree. Wim hof and yoga are good to do on your own, and then therapy is the nice bow that brings it all together. The physical yoga of Tummo is breathing to oxygenate the blood just as Wim prescribes, a number to the breathing cycle may differ but it is not an important difference.
    Also, the Yogi bath in ice water for centuries.
    Our wonderful friend Wim's technique differs from Tummo slightly.
    The physical yoga of Tummo is a small part of the yogic path,
    on its own, without a moral compass, HH Dalai Lama said 'Tummo is not regarded as very much amongst yogis.'
    What Wim said takes 20 years is not the cultivation of (inner fire) Tummo but the other Yogas as well transforming, the mind completely.
    Tummo is taught in secret and perhaps why we do not and would not see it much in the West.
    How would Yogis see Wim, I think with great respect and gratitude, especially in his effort to help others in this world.

      Yes I agree, it is probably not a major difference. What *IS* different is the Shambhavi Mahamudra Kriya from Sadhguru. This one is unlike any other I've done. It is my favorite practice yet. WHM is right behind it, however, for it's ease of use and flexibility. I just breathe deep all day long now; it had been months since I last did the WHM but now it is easier than before! It doesn't oxygenate the blood, that is a misconception which is said about the breathing far too much,
      average o2 saturation is 95-99%
      The breathing creates a controlled state of hypoxia, a beneficial state of stress which happens at a cellular level and which allows the red blood cells to release their payload of oxygen in an alkaline enviroment, when it is usually done due to acidity.

    • @theviewfinder8923
      @theviewfinder8923 Год назад

      @@Lickiecat Slow and deep (and specialised) breathing technique increases the level of oxygen in our blood. Oxygen is transported to the blood within the body through the respiratory system and that is why it influences your oxygen level if your breathing is not optimal.

    technically speaking, in most cases inflammation is a good thing. _(Inflammation is a natural defense mechanism that helps your body heal from injury or infection)_
    However, sometimes inflammation can become chronic, which means that it lasts for a long time. Chronic inflammation can be caused by a number of things, including infection, autoimmune diseases, and obesity. It can also be a risk factor for a number of chronic diseases, including heart disease, stroke, cancer, and arthritis.
    Not that it affects anything, but I think it'd be more precise for WH to elaborate that he means bringing down inflammation in cases of chronic inflammation. At least I hope that's what he does, it's an assumption that he does.

    The method he promotes is neither his nor tummo the breath of fire. It is simply a hyperventilation technique used by free divers and breath-hold competitors to over-oxygenate the blood to last longer under water etc. Some competitions don't allow hyperventilation techniques and some do. It's nothing new, but overall it has some benefits and Wim is good at promoting it and he's got the records to back it up.

    I have done your breathing exercises and cold therapy daily for almost 2 years.
    I have 2 questions:
    1.) after the out breath, once you feel the urge to breathe, why do you suggest only holding the in breath for 15 seconds? I like holding it until I feel the urge to breath which is often for 1 minute or longer. Why only 15 seconds?
    2.) in your guided breathing RUclips video you mention “slow your heart rate down” - would you please expand on this?
    Thank you so much ✨
    Christi

      I also really enjoy holding the in breath, finding things get really good in there on that part - it’s the time when I feel I have the strongest connection. I hope someone answers this for you.

      Yeah, do what feels good for you. I notice I want to hold it longer than 15 seconds as well. There’s no rhyme or reason for his 15 second hold. It’s just an arbitrary number that he decided one day.

    • @mach7rs
      @mach7rs 2 года назад +3

      If I had to guess, I would say that it's only 15 seconds so that you maintain the hyper oxygenated blood. The longer you hold, the less oxygen (and more carbon dioxide) will be in your blood. However, I agree with you; I like to do a breath hold on the inhale retention as well. I don't think it matters too much, just do what you feel is right!

      I would say he stays at 15 seconds for safety. Some people get tinnitus at that part either way, and it can happen if you hold it too hard or too long. Most people are not experienced and its just a safe way to introduce this to everyone, since some are holding it and pushing it harder to the head than others.

    Love you energy, Wim... but you explained zero about the differences... zebra and giraffe... Tummo is a deep and advanced technique as far as I know. I'm doing a course on it now, and it ironically says exactly the opposite... that it takes only a relatively SHORT time to learn - not 20 YEARS as you're saying here. Tummo was created to be a quicker way to experience our true nature (is what I've understood).

    A daily WHM routine for a few years has changed my life, literally. I'm like a whole different person now. I fell off the wagon a few months and feel myself getting back into negative thought patterns but I am going back to discipline myself again on a daily basis. Anyone who suffers from an overly negative attitude, depression, anxiety and similar issues should really start a daily WHM routine!

    • @joek292
      @joek292 2 года назад +1

      What exactly is your routine and amount of breaths/rounds/retention?

    • @tankjones513
      @tankjones513 2 года назад

      @@joek292 I recommend to start with the guided breathing session on his channel. It helps you keep count and you don't have to mess with timers and stuff. After a while, you get a feel for how it's supposed to go down and can do it on your own. Follow it up with a slightly cool shower and gradually build your way up each day to colder and colder temperatures. It really makes a huge difference to combine the cold exposure but don't overdo it. If you start shivering, back the Temps back up to warmer and really focus on accepting the cold into your body. Shivering is an automatic response but can be overcome with time gradually with more and more daily exposure.

    One is a giraffe and one is a zebra. So beautiful. It’s not about the thinking or conceptualizing. Fully in and let it go. Just be in this moment. What am I supposed to focus my attention and energy on? Nothing. It’s all there.

    Doing WHM since a couple of months now, it's such a good start in the morning especially the cold😬.
    Thanks for your passion Wim, you are such a blessing for this planet.
    A question , 1 week a go I thought I do some more rounds. So I did 12 rounds, my retention high was like 3:40min ( is was stunned)
    At some point, there was this tone in my head, not a Tinnitus but like a constant high tone, in like in some of them solfeggio healing frequencys.
    Can you explain or comment on that tone?

    Ever since I first heard bout Wim Hof, I've had a fascination with Wim's self professed abilities & benefits of his practices which are taken from G Tummo breathing [even bought his book Becoming The Ice Man]. However, my gut feeling had me thinking that something about him seemed wrong, angry & very curmudgeon like. Then I listened to the Behind The Bastards podcast about Wim Hof; very interesting and provides another view of this grifter/kook. The public park fountain enema story is just plain weird and speaks volumes. Ill be using his book for fireplace starter.

      I say both. The longer you practice over time the more you understand the intricacies of your mind. The more rounds you can do, the deeper you dive into your mind. That's just my own opinion from my 3 years practicing the whm, from a place of severe trauma

    once you master wim method.
    the next natural step is tummo yoga, studying the scriptures, practicing "real"meditation, understanding(exploring) the phenomenon of you mind and dissolving your impurity's.
    and the most important part. helping other with you achieved power and wisdom.
    the highest pleasure is caring and giving ..
    not self absorption and domination..
    but! we can not care and support when our energy is distracted, low or full power insanity..
    balance is a very important aspect in tummo. and you will not do higher forms of practice without achieving balance.

    "I only took inspiration by reading about it and copying it". Wim Hof fails to explain how it is different from Tummo, and fails to at least pay the bare minimum respect from which he drew "his method".
    Needless to say youtube brought me here from Tummo videos. I recommend all to discover Tummo, instead of the profit-driven Wim Hof merchandise.

    I do both every morning. I have noticed though that if I add the visualization from tummo to the Wim Hof method I get much hotter much faster than with tummo or Wim Hof alone. I think one of the potential use cases for tummo is to be able to increase our core tempature, maybe decrease too?, simply using visualization. I think of it as a tool in the tool box and the tool box is helping me gain more concious influence over my autonomic system from various directions

  • @evaleyst
    @evaleyst 5 месяцев назад

    Tummo must not be done without proper transfer of permission from a teacher who is in the "licensed" lineage. To publish it to each and anyone is improper. You must have done preliminary practise like 100.000 prostrations and the same number of certain mantras, offering ceremonies, and visualisations.
    Only under these circumstances, you may experience the same blessing and results.
