Delighted to revisit a beloved old system. My first Displaywriter was in 1981, when the police dept. phased out the Selectrics. The D-writer was a joy to operate, never jammed keyboard a plus (my typing speed on it was ca. 80 wpm) and spared the operators any hint of fatigue due to repetitive movements. We did 8-hour transcribing shifts and this great system made it possible.
Those were the good-old days. In the meantime, I worked at a service bureau, since September 1980. I used the Entrex data terminal by keyboarding data from source documents into the key-to-disk station keypunch style. I worked at the service bureau at least four years and four months. This the longest tenure I had ever spent on a job. Today, I am not working on a typical job, since 1997. I am using a microcomputer, a color laser printer with a scanner, and a label printer, and trying to revive my typewriting service, right in the privacy of my home.
I was fortunate to get my hands on the Displaywriter 6580 and Selectric printer at a technical school. Unfortunately, I did not get a job, using my newly-acquired skills. I loved the Displaywriter keyboard. The keys felt crisp with nice sounds when pressed. If I could, I would have wanted to buy an IBM Displaywriter for myself.
If anything the keyboard was the best part of this computer, being one of the last beamspring keyboards they made, though getting just the keyboard today would put you down ~$2000 at the current pricing.
@@DaveyJonesLockerwithJazzy Here's what. I graduated from the standalone word processor to a microcomputer, since 2002. I owned a Cybernet ZPC 9000 PC, which ran Microsoft Windows XP Professional, and Microsoft Office XP Professional, including Microsoft Publisher 2002 Professional on a separate disc, until 2017. The microcomputer's motherboard died. Then I bought a Dell Inspiron. Like Cybernet that was made in California, the Dell Inspiron is an all-in-one PC. The differences are that Cybernet had the computer inside the keyboard, and the Dell has the computer inside the monitor. I call my computer "keyboard," because it is my powerful typewriter. Also, I own a Canon color laser printer, and the present model has a scanner feature included. Also, I have a Brother P-touch label printer that can print laminated label tapes. I have fun keyboarding documents and files on [laser] paper and on label tapes. Thank you for tapping or typing to me, and Happy Keyboarding!

Beam Spring keyboard this machines used is Rolls-Royce of keyboards to this day.

You can buy a Displaywriter complete on ebay for $US1,000 but without the printer.. I saw one six months ago for this price..

I loved working on the Displaywriter at a law school typing legal documents for all of the professors.
