  • This IBM (Display Writer) you may call a computer, but actually it's a $10.000 typewriter from 1980, so 38 years old.
At that time this computer was owned by Douwe Egberts, a Dutch coffee brand who used this computer to manage their administration. Until the end of 2012 it was used daily by the last owner who managed his own administration. He sold it for $44,- with:
    - The 1980 IBM DisplayWriter
    - Two DaisyWheel printers
    - Lots and lots of documentation
    - Sixty 8" floppys
    - The floppydrive, also called the Toaster
    - Great historical value.

Wow, does this bring back memories. I remember that noisy disk drive like it was yesterday.

I was lucky to work on an IBM Displaywriter at a Law School. I loved it.

I used one of these from 1980 to 1989 at my job at P&G. It was actually very nice for the time. Some of my co-workers were still using a typewriter and cutting and pasting!

I took a word processing course on the IBM Displaywriter at Control Data Institute in 1988. A Selectric printer, including the typeball element was attached to the Displaywriter. Afterwards, I wish I had a word processor for my own. Many years later, I began using a microcomputer, a color laser printer and a scanner in 2002, but did not look back. I liked working with the TextPak 4 program and it made using the Displaywriter easier to use. The keys had a nice tactile-like feel and were pleasant to the touch. I had better experience with the IBM Displaywriter than with Wang.

In our office in the early eighties we had them. In my opinion, despite it being a dedicated word processor, it's features were amazing. We had the daisy wheel printers that produced impecable text. At that time, it was fashionable to have secretaries. Ours were amazingly productive and created beautiful documents. I did use it personally a little bit and compared it to the early word processors of that time, such as Wordstar. I preferred the Displaywriter by far (not to confuse with the IBM Software called Displaywrite that ran in DOS computers)

Technically it is a computer it can even run CP/M86 but they sold it as a dedicated word processor.
It's use of the 8086 processor influenced the choice of the 8088 in the IBM 5150.

Oh god, the memories....it took a slightly crazed person to operate one of these - I was very good at it :) I applied for a job at an office that had tried to train 3 people in one year to run their Displaywriter, with no luck...I had no computer experience and they weren't too keen on giving me a shot. This was in the early 80's, and offices were just getting computerized - the other machine I had to learn was a telex - now those were REALLY annoying :)

Let me guess that this machine also was related to the 8085-based IBM System/23 DataMaster developmed in 1978-80 (just like the IBM PC of 1981 was).

Do you have the original documentation? I was one of the instructional designers that designed and developed the user manuals and would love to have a copy of it. It is not a dutch computer. It was developed by IBM in the very early '80s and had what was probably the first user documentation for computers. We also developed a week-long classroom training program.
