I think what’s interesting about this whole storyline is that Arthur is not jealous that Vivi and Lewis are together because he wants Vivi or Lewis. He’s jealous because he wants something like that and feels like a third wheel constantly. I like that the animators did that rather than another toxic love triangle because it does make all characters likeable

Arthur (the yellow guy) arm did takeover and pushed Lewis (the ghost guy) into the spikes so the dog who I believe is called mystery bit off Arthur’s possessed arm which is why he has a prosthetic one

The year is 2022, this animation is like, 8 years old already, and it still doesn't get the recognition it deserves; it has so much heart and depth packed into what looks like a child's scribble. This has the same breath of maturity hiding behind an innocent style that made the original "gold age" Cartoon Network cartoons so great and memorable. It's a shame something with so much soul like this is getting "lost in time".

It's interesting to note that at the beginning, we see the trio of Arthur, Vivi and Mystery all happy with wherever it is that they're going. Meanwhile, when we see the flashback to when our ghosty friend was alive, Arthur looks more dejected than anything. His arm only started possessing him during the cave, but the colorization was green as it took control...such as green with envy. I don't think Arthur was wanting Vivi to himself or anything, but maybe he was envious that Lewis, our ghosty friend, had all that Arthur wanted? He was the leader, had a girl he loved and a goal in life while Arthur was in the background unable to get into the front seats. He had taken Lewis' place in the van, being part of the foreground whereas before, he was merely in the background barely able to be seen behind the others. Maybe he felt there just wasn't room for himself in the gang unsure of what to do?
I think conceptually this is the case, but on a more literal story-case, it was most likely... Spoilers below:
A possession of some kind, as we see that Mystery ripped the arm off (presumably to stop the spread), and when the reflection shows him, it's with no arm. So the possessing force may have fed off, or be conceptually based on, envy but that same force (black and green coloration) possesses Mystery at the end of The Future. And when that happens, it's after the loss of the plant woman, not something that would necessarily spark "envy" of all things.
@@dahliarose6024 interesting, I was more thinking that it was a piece of her that transferred when Mystery got attacked, like how we saw her hand crawling back and reattaching to her, same as her head in Freaking Out. I figured that instead of doing that, she used that control to take control of Mystery.
@@Swordkiller55623Nah, at the end of The Future we see it rewind and very clearly show his arm appear and squeeze Mystery's heart causing the transform into Murder Mystery.
We also see the arm cowering in fear and fleeing at the sight of Shiromiro, so it likely took the chance to use Mystery dying to take over his body and defeat her.
Either way 100% the arm possessed Mystery at the end, not only was it clearly shown but they took the time to show us the same events again immediately after to show why they happened, reason being he was possessed by the arm when he was dying.

i remember how fascinating i was when i found out about mystery skulls
ok theres a lot of controversy about what the story is so im gonna go ahead and give my two cents :0
i've read a lot of stuff on different social media talking about this and i think i got a pretty stable theory
arthur (yellow) vivi (blue) ben (red) and lewis (purple) are all a gang that does paranormal research, much like scooby doo. when they enter the green cave, it's haunted by a spirit that possesses Arthur's left arm, and makes him push Lewis into the spikes. in the pan out of the scene, we can see Vivi at the bottom, suggesting she saw lewis die, but doesn't know who pushed him off.
Ben was behind arthur when it happened, and saw the whole thing. he tore off arthur's arm, trapping the ghost inside of it, and freeing arthur. the arm was later replaced with a mechanical arm.
arthur looks pretty upset in the flashback from the beginning. this could be because he originally didn't like lewis that much, or had feelings for vivi and was jealous. (which could have influenced the possession, and pushed him to kill lewis, though that wasn't his own intention)
ben turning into a kitsune in the picture could have been symbolism, or literally. i don't know what it means, but he turned into a kitsune in order to remove arthur's arm.
in 1:20, all the characters view the mirrors. this is a hint to all of their mishaps/insecurities about lewis' death. in Vivi's reflection, her eyes are missing. this is because she saw lewis die, but didn't see how he died.
In Arthur's reflection, he is missing his arm. this is because, of course, he doesn't have a real, living arm there, and that arm is what was responsible for killing Lewis, but that part of him is gone.
with Ben, the mirror shatters completely. this is because he knows how Lewis died, and that Arthur, with the demon, killed him. but it shatters because Ben is unable to tell anyone what really happened.
In the end, Lewis sees that his life is gone and there's no way to get it back, and moves on. (He disappears, along with the house.)
I think the characters bopping along to the music also symbolizes their connection with the real world, or being "alive". after Lewis died, his spirit stayed, symbolized by the beating gold heart, and was connected by Lewis and Vivi's relationship, which was symbolized by the picture inside the heart. After the heart broke and Vivi was dragged off by Arthur, the connection was severed and after that part the heart, as well as Lewis, never "beated" again, while the others still did.
we can also see at 3:12 that the spirit seemed to influence the ghost version of Lewis, Vivi's pain about not knowing what happened (being unable to see) and in the last bit, we can see Arthur holding back his own possessed side while crying, which also says he was really upset about what he did to lewis :0

the part where the arm gets possessed it looks like the dog was right behind him possessing him because if you look at the dog he looks very evil looking i think he was possessed and then which turn possessed the guy in yellows arm pushing off the purple dude
It took me too long to realize Vivi SAW Lewis die, so the whole glowy eye thing at 3:12 is him making her forget... Which is why Freaking Out shows that they've been searching for Lewis this whole time, thinking he's just gone missing

3:14 the human part of arthur is crying, I’ve seen this video tons of times and this is my first time seeing that. We know that he didn’t mean to push Lewis, and that it was a demon esc thing that possessed his left side which pushed Lewis off. Every time I see this I learn more, this series is amazing
This is true, but I think the thing that possessed him was actually amplifying his emotions. Because earlier in the van, Arthur looked very upset. So I believe that the spirit took advantage of that. Idk, all I know, is that Arthur would never kill someone on purpose lol.
I believe it was the bat that opened its eyes when they entered the cave. I would assume it has some sort of relation to the plant chick (not sure what her name is), as Arthur’s possessed smile is the exact same as her’s.
I think it was the Dog to be honest. The dog shows up on each scene Arthur is possessed and is seen at 3:15 kinda showing his true self it seems. Perhaps it's always been the dog.
Edit: Further evidence at 1:24 the dogs mirror shatters. Maybe it showed something inside that the mirror couldn't handle? This is all just a Theory, A Mystery Theory! Thanks for reading.
Joshua G Mystery is the one who ripped off Arthur’s possessed arm though. Why would Mystery possess the arm and then immediately rip it off so that it couldn’t be possessed again?

And seeing this compared to the future... wow the animation got a Big glow during each time it got out, like it is notable that in each one the animation is getting to move more smoothly then the last one, specially on the future. My favorite part would be the fight of Viví Vs shiromori, I really can’t wait for the next video... welp now time to go back to my tomb until the 5th episode is out in 2022. Buh Bye guys.

As of Mindnight this will be 8 years old. man time flys. While we might not have our new part of the story till 2023 i'm still so glad that this came to be
I remember watching this in college my freshman year before it got popular. Then show it to boyfriend at the time. (Who is now my husband.) He got hooked to it like me. Now we show the video and song to my son who has autism. He loves the music and video. But hopefully when my son is older he can listen and watch the hellbend and future. Just know Ben your animations go from from all ages.

this is such a spectacular piece in isolation. the other parts have the groundwork of being part of a set, but this can always be enjoyed by itself and has the strongest theming.
