Super Saiyan 3 sucks. I said it - the form is bad and for a number of reasons all of which I’ll cover in this video. I’ve been critical of Super Saiyan 3 for a long time, and a lot of people have wondered why since I made my transformation tier list and placed the form at the bottom so here’s that explanation.

@@kodegunz9223 you can't master ssj 3. The point of ssj 3 is to turn your life energy into power. This is why vegeta never learned it. You have to be dead just to even unlock it. It's a very sloppy technique and mastering ssj gives the same effect as using ssj 3
There's nothing wrong with SS3, just the writing surrounding it (which the Buu arch suffers from in general)

Keith Keller buu arc doesn’t suffer from too much writing issues. Y’all just say that Bc it’s not carbon copy of the other sagas which were popular like always. Buu arc one of the best arc. For characters. Events and fan service. Writing is pretty good too
Not gonna lie I love this form when I first saw it I thought it was some Evil Goku's Super Saiyan it reminded me of a villain with his brows and all.

Vegeta is angry Goku doesn't use it in their fight, and Goten and Trunks idolize it because they're children, but the reason Vegeta doesn't learn it after the Buu saga is because he sees how pointless the form is. No one, including Goku after he achieves Super Saiyan God, thinks the form is useful unless they've never seen it before.

SS4 is actually based on the saiyans origin and primal instinct being MASTERED. It's the truest Saiyan form outside of the original(golden haired) SSJ. Has the most accurate and true to Saiyan lore backstory as well
The biggest issue I have with SS3 is that it gave birth to endless DBZ parodies where your hair grows proportional to your power up
To this day Super Saiyan 4 has the best design in my opinion.

SSJ4 in my opinion should have been golden (both the fur and the hair), instead of red/ pink, since it evolves from the golden oozaru
That way it would have been perfect (if you take the magical pants out of the equation in GT)

It didn't suck in gt. 3 was fine and a huge power boost and could have beaten buu, goku just dicked around, its not the forms fault, it's goku's

The dude literally said he could have beaten Kid Buu using SSJ3 while at full strength but he wanted to give Vegeta a turn to fight aswell. Or something like that. Point is the form was sufficient but Goku’s actions chose otherwise. That in no way makes SSJ3 a bad or useless transformation. Thats like saying Gohans SSJ2 transformation was useless because he toyed around with Cell rather than killing him outright which resulted in Goku’s death and almost the entire planets destruction. It was a choice.

Mr. Pixel No, I remember him saying it to Vegeta during his fight with Kid Buu on the Kai’s world. Would be nice if you checked though as I only ever watched DBZ once in the English dub (binged it actually) and its been 5 or more years since then.
@@chainedscythe2000 I've seen it more recently, and here's what I remember: Goku says his ssj3 could beat Fat Buu, but he wanted to teach Goten and Trunks fusion to defend the planet and all that stuff. So, he didn't kill Fat Buu. Later on in the arc, he gets cocky when fighting Kid Buu, comparing him to Fat Buu believing he would have an easy time in ssj3, underestimating him and saying he could fight Buu alone. He realizes during the fight with Kid Buu that he was wrong, and used up a lot of energy. This made Goku really weak later on in the fight because, you know, he didn't have the energy to transform to even a basic ssj. Afterwards the Spirit Bomb thing happens with Vegeta holding Buu off.
SSJ3 could have been aLOT more useful, if it was mastered like how SSJ1 was in the HBTC.

I agreed with everything you said man. I preferred SSJ2 over SSJ3. In my opinion SSJ4 had the best design. It made the trails relevant again and I really liked the dark fur, keeping the hair black, and changing the eyes. Goku and Vegeta looked more intimidating and badass.

I feel like in another lifetime the design SSJ4 should've been the next stage of a saiyan. Where SSJ2, is a mastery of SSJ, the SSJ4 is a different pathway in itself

One thing that makes me dislike it as well is that it makes SS2 feel less special. When introduced, SS2 could be seen as the complete mastery and evolution of the Super Saiyan power, as it seems to have required getting used to SS1's energy usage before achieving it (at least as seen for Goku and Gohan), but then SS3 enters the picture and just kinda makes SS2 the awkward middle man.
Totally agree, Super Saiyan 3 completely recontextualizes Super Saiyan 2.
Before Super Saiyan 2 (Which was called an ascended Super Saiyan) was seen as the pinnacle of what a Super Saiyan should be and it came with pretty much no strings attached.
Once SSJ3 comes around it makes Super Saiyan 2 into a different form to SSJ which I don't think works
Super saiyan 3 is like the kaioken you just got to get the job done quickly.
but kaioken improves everything while damaging you the ssj3 literally started to have too much muscle and too slow for the fights now but yes it would suck to get hit by it

The logic of the Buu saga in general is to blame here, not necessarily the form. The form is badass.

According to hyourinjutsu, There was a vid where he said staying in ssj3 would master 20% of ssj3 but you need the Saipan TAIL to master the other 80% which i agree with and is actually pretty agreeable as you need a tail to even access ssj4 and ssj3 is like a weaker version of it, i dare say incomplete but back to my point, ssj 3 is rad and it doesn’t really matter what your opinion is on it. After all it is your opinion, and we cant change it.

I was always confused about how Goku had used super saiyan 3 before, presumably, but no one sensed it on earth, but vegeta is able to sense it in otherworld. Like, had he ever used it, wouldnt have everyone sensed it?
You'd figure that'd be the case, but nope. It would make sense with Super Saiyan God and Super Saiyan Blue, but not a regular form like SS3.
My head canon is that Ssj3 is actually just SSJ2 Grade 3

I'd like to see an arc where goku, vegeta and friends, due to plot, end up in a realm where they can't use their God powers so they result in using ssj 3 for goku and ssj 2 for vegeta.
At the end of the arc goku and vegeta are beaten and unable to move due to the antagonist being too much for them. Then vegeta thinking about his pride slowly stands up and says "I can't believe you've pushed me to use this GOD FORSAKEN FORM! AAAAAAARGH!!!" A white flash slowly fades as Ssj 3 vegeta is revealed...
This was in my head and I needed to post it somewhere.
This hits at what i thought i read in the manga or saw in the anime, but it was my understanding that vegeta could go ss3 now but he chooses not to because of the power consumption and stamina. Same reason he doesn't like using the bulked up muscular forms that slow you down.

Given that the form has a MASSIVE drain on your stamina the only use I can see is if you quickly power up while charging a ki blast or beam to get that extra OOMF but then you immediately power back down to SSJ 2 after the blast/beam.

I'm glad someone finally talked about how weird this form is aesthetically. I guess it ultimately comes down to personal preference, but I also have never liked how this form looks. No eyebrows? Super long hair like Raditz? And by what mechanism do the eyebrows disappear and reappear? Similarly, how does the hair just grow and then shorten? And why the obsession with removing eyebrows (as seen again Vegeta's Ultra Ego form)? There's a reason human beings have eyebrows.
Yeah, it’s almost like it’s a transformation or something…. That’s like complaining that frieza lost his horns after progressive transformations, or Zarbon lost his smooth skin when he transformed…
I like to think that ss3 pulls the hairs from the rest of the body, like eyebrows, leg hairs etc, and uses the combined length at the top of his head. 😖
Also the reason why SSJ3 has that neanderthal brow is (from what I've heard) because it's meant to be a bit more primal looking, that's also the reason why SSJ4 is covered in fur, speaking of SSJ4, I know you have complaints about SSJ4 having clothes materialize out of thin air but you need to realize that the designer behind SSJ4 had to do that otherwise if we saw SSJ4 we'd be looking at a nude Goku and Vegeta covered in fur, I don't know about you but I'd rather have the clothes materialize out of thin air than seeing the "full show" of an SSJ4
I never understood why the magic cloths of ssj4 was an issue. Piccolo can shoot cloths out of his fucking fingers
@@cake6851 yeah but its part of the transformation. So its kind of dumb. Plus goku and vegeta have never materialized clothes. I mean saying because piccolo can do it means the others can do it isnt right.
Still I prefer the clothes magically appearing rather than having to see a nude SSJ4 on the screen

@@trainmaster997 nah you're more or less right about both SSJ1 and SSJ2 😂 But that's what I'm trying to say though, we could have a story arc where Goku and Vegeta come to universe 6, and Goku trains Caulifla and Kale, and during an intense battle with the arc's main villain she could tap into it.
The thing about Goku wanting to end things quickly, I was always under the impression that since it took several minutes to charge up to that form to begin with, it would not have been quick, since I highly doubt Vegeta would've let him even do that at that point.

I always thought the form had something to do with Space and Time, particularly Time, since Goku seems was able to achieve it in Heaven, when he's not subjected to the rules of time anymore, and to use it easily while he's dead. Gotenks also learns it in a place where Time is completely different and he uses it to create whole through the dimensions.

I thought the reason Goku didn't go SSJ3 against Vegeta so he wouldn't hurt his pride. Him holding out until the last minute when buu is finally active, it shows it's a last ditch effort that he wanted to save for the worst possible scenario, as his time limit would be cut short.

@JackMaster 01 The difference is that grade 3 was used once and thrown away because it was bad. Super Saiyan 3 was bad and used constantly until God ki came.
You can’t tell me that SSJ3 Goku vs Majin Buu and Kid Buu aren’t one of the most badass fights in Dragon Ball history.

It was great on Gohan, but that’s only because you can tell immediately what form he’s in since his hair doesn’t spike up in the normal Super Saiyan form. It’s hard to tell what form Goku and Vegeta are in unless you specifically look for the lightning in the aura and occasionally depending on the art, how spiked up it is

AB It's only really bad looking on Vegeta because the hair doesn't change. With Goku, Gohan (both adult and Cell Saga), and Trunks you can easily tell the difference between SSJ1 and 2.

Most of the problems with SSJ3 can be applied to the Buu Saga in general. I will forever maintain that it logically should have ended with the Cell Saga and Gohan becoming the savior of the Earth. But Toriyama has massive ADD and questionable writing. It would be really nice if he could rewrite everything from Buu onward with the same passion, clarity and narrative strength that he displayed with DBS: Broly - which I personally feel is some of the best writing he's ever done.
Well he did rewrite the episode of bardock and look how that turned out
The buu saga was a mess and SSJ3 wasn't well written so it didn't really get a chance to shine, not to mention the only two people to attain SSJ3 didn't really have good experience with it and couldn't use it to it's full potential, Goku didn't get much practice with it and Gotenks only uses to show off. In the end the mishandled buu saga made SSJ3 a pretty poorly written transformation, but because of how little was put in to the writing of SSJ3 than gives fans and fan manga creators and the Dragon Ball community as a whole a lot of room to fix, add on and improve SSJ3 in different ways.
Goku by his addmition says that he learned the form recently and didnt master it, plus he can only hold it properly when he was dead only.

I completely agree with all your points. Personally, I feel the worst part is that there is no real narrative purpose or meaning to the form. The reason the classic super saiyan form is so loved is because it was built up hard. Vegeta constantly talking about the legendary super saiyan, Goku needing to look deep inside himself for an extremely dangerous foe that wiped out his entire race, and couple that in with the death of Goku's best friend, all these built up to the debut of an amazing form.
It's not just because it looks cool or makes Goku stronger, it's about representing how far Goku has come and how he has evolved as a character. And the lack of any real story meaning or purpose is what I think becomes the biggest drawback for super saiyan 3.
I remember when I was a kid and I first saw the form in an ad or something, I thought it was supposed to be Raditz having gone regular super saiyan.

I think SS3 is canonically a bottom-tier transformation cause it was explained (somewhere) that the form takes up way too much energy and a fully mastered SS1 was equivalent if not better in power to SS3. Don't quote me on this, though.

Because we all saw how cool and badass it looked but then the form turns out useless because of the stamina drain. That might be the reason why we never saw SSJ3 vegeta because he knew it's useless.

One of the theories I heard was that the form was abandoned because it was too much to draw all that hair for the artists.

Glad someone agrees with me. SSJ3 is a representation of both the concept of how the story's plot of stronger and stronger antagonist became annoying and how giving such a powerful form such huge drawbacks and no victories what so ever makes it a stupid form outright. Never has the form been used as a bonus or even in a positive light. Its just there to show the power creep of the villains. I'm gonna say it, I prefer SSJ4 over SSJ3 and even God Red and God Blue.

Ssj God is the best form: stronger and faster then Ssj 4, 2nd minimal energy consumption transformation behind ssj4, simple but good design.

It can be a good transformation because if goku masters it then it’s going to be really op, Goku mastered ssj by staying in that form, Goku and vegeta mastered ssjb in the manga, Goku mastered ssjb by trapping the ki that was flowing out of his body and put that ki into his body, that grants goku more power to use and he’s stronger, so if goku can master ssj3 like he did with blue then it’ll be a useful transformation

SSJ3 was not used very well
Its like they introduce forms and the next season they become invalid Because a new form is unlocked. Kaioken (not a transformation i know) then gets overshadowed by Super Saiyan
Then super Saiyan gets overshadowed by Super Saiyan 2, then 2 is overshadowed by SS3. You never see these forms anymore when the new form comes into play

You forgot to mention that Trunks mastered/perfected ssj2 in the manga which put him on par or even slightly above ssj3 Goku, hence why he needed god to beat him. Another reason against ssj3 and for ssj2. That always makes me wondering if you could do the same with ssj3

Nah SSB is super useful. With this transformation, you can adjust your own ki level. And what I mean by that is that you can have the same power level as a SS, SS2, SS3, SSG or higher. SSGSS is more convienient because it helps to save more stamina. And I know SSGSS does also waste stamina. But changing transformations wastes a lot stamina. Watch AnimeLiveReactions's explanation of this awesome transformation.
I think people forgot how long he fought kid buu in ssj3 and how much damage he did to Majin Buu which couldn't be achievable otherwise another reason to why Gotenks needed ssj3 to beat Super Buu...Majin Vegeta failed to really hurt majin buu and Gohan Soo that is a big deal and makes the form good ... the stamina thing is not a big whoop considering Gotenks didn't get tired
Them skipping ssj2 in the fight against jiren was cause they were lazy,they didn't want to go through animating the hair and how every movement affected it. Which can be proved by how he stayed still when he went ssj3 in ToP
