Hello Nick Higgs [ @nickhiggsthesinger ] ! Nightwish fan here, your musical quest summoned me.
Welcome to the world of symphonic metal! And thank you for checking this legendary band! This live recording is from Helsinki in 2005, then together with Tarja Turunen [pronounced Tar-rya], the 1st female singer of the band, and Marco Hietala, bassist and singer.
About the instrumental and vocal added parts - it's good to know they recorded their orchestral and vocal back tracks with prestigious institutions as London Philharmonic Orchestra. London's The Metro Voices choir group and London's Young Musicians Children's Choir as their regular partners.
Since this is your first Nightwish reaction, it is my duty to give you the [updated] short history of the band concentrated by Ann Waychoff, one of the biggest Nightwish fan who has since passed away (and I am doing this in her memory):
" Nightwish was started in 1996.They are considered a Symphonic Metal band, with a female main singer. They are from Finland.
Tuomas Holopainen [pronounced Tuo-mas], the keyboard player, composes and writes the lyrics for 95% of their music. [Sami Vanska was the bassist of the band starting with their 2nd studio album, he was with them until 2001. Then Marco Hietala was bassist and vocals, since 2001 to 2020. He recently announced his retirement both from the band and the public life for the next year at least. Then in May 2021 Jukka Koskinen [pronounced Yukka] became the bassist of the band, for the Human :II: Nature tour - and recently, the band announced he became a permanent member] And there is the guitarist Emppu Vuorinen [he also recorded the bass lines for their 1st studio album]. Then there is Troy Donockley from UK who is a multi-instrumentalist and vocals. Jukka Nevalainen [pronounced Yukka] is the drummer. In 2015 due to Jukka's health issues Kai Hahto became the drummer and as of now is a permanent addition.
Nightwish has had three singers. 1st one was Tarja Turunen [pronounced Tarr-ya] (Operatic vocals) - you just heard her. She was with them until 2005. The 2nd one was Anette Olzon from Sweden (Poppy, strong vocals). She was with them until 2012.The 3rd and current singer is Floor Jansen, from Netherlands (power, operatic, soprano.....most versatile).
There are live concerts that you should use depending on what era. From Wishes to Eternity and End of an Era (Tarja), Montreux Festival live 2012 and Exit Festival (Anette), Live at Wacken 2013, Live at Wembley, Live at Tampere, Vehicle of Spirit, Decades live (Floor). I hope this helps.
I want to welcome you to the Nightwish community. I hope you like them enough to continue the journey. Believe me Nightwish will surprise you with their songs. You will never know what to expect. They are unbelievable live. I want to warn you that Nightwish fans are hard core. So be prepared. lol "
For an extended set of suggestion (with links), I posted 2 huge comments in the community tab in my main YT channel: www.youtube.com/@gabriel.bardac/community

Welcome to symphonic metal and Nightwish.
Andrew Lloyd Weber HAS heard this, and he loved it. Arrangement here is by the keyboardist , Tuomas Holopainen. He is the band mastermind, writing and composing 90-95% of their songs. Tuomas, Tarja, and guitarist Emppu Vuorinen formed the band in 1996.
Song #5 in an 18 song set here in 2005. It was Tarja's last Nightwish concert after 9 years and 5 albums. She was fired after the show, but has gone on to a long and successful solo career. Marko does have a great voice, he sang backing and co lead on a lot of songs, and lead on a few. He left the band in 2021 , for personal reasons, after 2 decades. He was lead singer in his first band, Tarot, which he formed with his brother at age 16.
See the comment from Gabriel Bardac for more info, and links to a lot of their songs.

@@nickhiggsthesinger In fact, Tarja was expelled, fired, despite her seemingly indispensability as a soloist, but this bitch and her husband began to irritate everyone unbearably, they tired everyone so much with their ambitions that she was kicked out of the group by a unanimous decision of all participants, she was simply given a kick in the ass the day after the concert. She repeatedly stated that she could leave the group at any time, simply by giving one day's notice, and constantly blackmailed the gang with this, so a day later (after the concert) she was fired. Well, then there was a scandal about how unfair it was, controversy surrounding Nightwish and the division of fans into two camps. But I note that all this noise contributed to the successful sales of not only the DVD of this last performance with Tarja, but also generally inspired everyone to buy Nightwish discs. I don’t rule out the possibility that it was a conspiracy, but in fact they all quietly decided that everyone was going their own way and created a scandal to create this excitement. But personally, I never liked Tarja, and they could have been better than her. Amy Lynn Hartzler (Evanescent), Simone Joanna Maria Simons (Epica); Diane van Giersbergen (Xandria), Amanda Somerville (Exit Edem),

Nightwish is a band made of of extremely talented musicians who all play for the song. You won't find any egos here. The result is a total that is greater than the sum of its parts. I hope you do follow along with more Nightwish, and some of the other epic symphonic metal bands like Epica with their fantastic lead singer Simone Simons.. The talent in this particular genre of metal is out of sight. I'm guessing from what you said about your background that you would like the song that is the usual introduction to Nightwish. That is "Ghost Love Score" live from the Wacken 2013 concert. It features their third, and current singer, Floor Jansen. After that, well, Nightwish has an extensive catalog and you won't find a bad song in the bunch. And, Nightwish is a band that, good as they are in their music video, really excels at live performances. Subscribing to follow along with your new, and exciting, journey.

Tarja is a classically trained lyrical soprano. Please react to Ghost Love Score from the same end of an era concert and Tarja solo singing Pie Jesu. She is amazing. Marko released a solo album with a duet with Tarja called Left On Mars.
Tuomas said in an interview about GLS: "Doing this kind of really orchestral, symphonic stuff for four albums, you have to be prepared to take the next step and go 10 steps beyond, and that's how we ended up with the London Philharmonic Orchestra. At that time we also had the financial resources to do it." So, there`s an actual Orchestra doing amazing backing vocals and symphonic stuff, it sounds incredible.

They were 19 and HS friends.1996. Jukka is drummer. Marco came in 2002. Early NW has a Tolkien goth feel and is darker and romantic. After Tarja left it was a bit poppy for a few yrs. Then came Floor in 2013. NW now is v symphonic( Hans Zimmer ) and arena. Still great. Diff vibe. But most like first or third stage best. I will always be Tarja. My first love and that’s more my vibe. But I respect the Floor NW as brilliant. Thomas writes for how he feels and for the singer’s voice.

I agree with you 100%! As much as I’ve always loved the original musical, the metal instrumentation just sounds so much more FULL to me. I cant even listen to the movie version now without feeling like it’s missing electric guitars.
A couple fun facts about this band and performance:
    - Andrew Lloyd Webber has said it’s his favorite cover of the song
    - Marko had vocal reconstruction surgery in the past, which makes the fact that he can sing like THIS even more wild
    - Tarja is classically trained! Specifically in German Lied singing (I think that’s how you say it)
Symphonic metal is incredible, IMO just the ultimate form of music. It’s metal and classical and theater and opera and movie scores all rolled into one for a beautiful, bombastic sound.
To continue on your symphonic metal journey with some other kind of “theatrical” songs, here’s some recs from some names you’ll hear a lot:
Nightwish - Ghost Love Score, Wacken 2013
Epica - The Skeleton Key, Omega Alive (the lead singer of this band, Simone, has a very musical-theater style to her singing and diction that I think you’ll like)
Ayreon - Valley of the Queens (features Floor along with two other vocal legends, Anneke van Giersbergen and Marcela Bovio)
    Tarja - Supremacy, Woodstock 2016

Honestly, when I first heard this version, I wasn't a fan. I was so tried and true to the original on stage, but over time this has become one of my favorite renditions. The production, contrasting vocals of more classical and rock but they blend WONDERFULLY. I just love this musical, and specifically this song so much. Amazing stuff as always Nick!

I had a business trip to Finland in the early 2000s and heard Nightwish on some TV show in the hotel. At first I didn't know what to think but it grew on me. At that time it was hard to find foreign music but I found a couple of underground metal stores in houston where they carried the albums and DVDs.
By the way, Tarja had the flu during this performance.

Metal wants to be harder, faster and louder than any other music. Some singers want to increase the hardness through distortion. What Marko does here are screams. The basis is baby crying. Part of the singing is created in the mouth. The alternative is growls, where you sound like a demon or lion. Clearing your throat is the basis. You can hear both here:

Check out The Charismatic Voice for some deep dives into what goes on during harsh vocals.
    ruclips.net/video/JkBV8GoPWXY/видео.htmlsi=FXuGrq7M3Ta02B_M
She's become best friends with Will Ramos of Lorna Shore, and he's agreed to help explore what goes on. They've gone to Utah and stuck cameras down his throat to see what the hell is going on, and recently did needles into his throat to see that side of it. I'm not a huge Lorna Shore fan(or most harsh only vocal bands), but mad respect for him for doing this, and mad respect to those who do it nearly nightly. The voice docs are now noting that as bad as Metal screams and harsh vocals sound, they don't see these guys and gals harming themselves nearly as often as other singers, and they really are interested in why and how.

Nightwish is great, they have many, many really strong songs, I've been a fan since I was 15, their music has been the soundtrack of my life.
But I have to mention Roy Khan too, as you are looking for the best singers; his voice just has that special something.
Check out his band Kamelot and prepare to be amazed. ;)
And there is of course Ayreon; that is a vocalists overload! They somethings have... what is it? 9? 10 vocalists live on stage at once. XD
I'm new to your channel, so I am going to sub and bingewatch some of your older vids now. ;D

Great reaction. :) Tarja was studying operatic singing in Finland and then in Germany, so she would be opera singer, but she chose Nightwish, and she was first female operatic singer in metal music, she opened doors for sooo many talented female singers and started how symphonic metal is recognized nowadays. If you want to hear her full vocal abilities, I really recommend her solo career, for example what you can't really hear in Nightwish songs is her chest voice, she has very deep, dark and beautiful chest voice. In solo career she has rock and metal songs, ballads, she performing classical and operatic music, she even have her own "Ave Maria", also christmas music, amazing two albums with christmas songs in dark arrangements, she's also part of electronic duo Outlanders, you have many different options to listen. ;)
Classical music and metal music have much in common, there is similar instrumental structure in many cases, metal music can be very melodic and also very difficult to play, very technical.
If you want to hear best vocalists, you definitely should listen to Kokia, she's japanese singer, songwriter, composer, arranger and producer, she's classically and operatically trained, but it's not her main vocal technique she's using. She's the best female singer I've ever heard, her technique is insane and she has so beautiful voice and is so emotional. I really recommend song "Chouwa Oto" live from History concert tour 2012 or "Il Mare Dei Suoni" from the same concert, if you want to hear her more operatic technique (this second song is in italian) or if you want something different, I really recommend song "Gematria" live from Layers ~Lights and Shadows~ concert 2016, this song is like a journey. Oh, and she using back vocals in her music, also on live performances, all recorded by her. I hope you will react to her! ;)
Btw, metal music and classical music have much in common, musically have similar structure and metal it's not only harsh vocals. I would recomment another jaoanese music, rock/metal band with just amazing singer. I will recommend something not that heavy, so don't worry. ;) Band is The Gazette and song is "Dim Scene", please react to live version from 2014 with english translation, if you type just "the gazette dim scene live eng sub" there should be video with title "the Gazette DIM Scene (eng sub)', so please react to this one. This song is just amazing, definitely one of my favourite by them, and Ruki's vocal is incredible, you just must hear that. Some info, it's band from Visual Kei movement, it's like music, fashion and subculture, it have some connections with traditional japanese theater kabuki, so in music there are mostly guys, even if some of them have very feminine image (from what I saw, for western people almost all looks like girls...), but in this band all members are guys. I'm curious what would you say about Visual Kei vibrato, very strong and beautiful. :) And beautiful clean vocal is very important in most Visual Kei subgenres (there are many variety of this movement in both music and fashion), but in the same time many singers using svreams and harsh vocals, Ruki too. In this song are some very emotional screams. Whole song is very emotional and deep.

Something about symphonic metal and power metal especially, is that there is a lot material they do that is arguably in the vein of musical theater in the first place - a lot of performance, a lot of EPICness, storytelling, drama, etc. So if you can imagine the kind of people who would be in a band like this in the first place, it shouldn't surprise you that this song was an obvious cover for them. I think if you keep listening to Nightwish, you'll probably see what I mean. The way Nightwish often leads classical music and musical theater fans toward metal, they also lead metalheads toward classical music! I don't think you should jump right there, but when you get to it, The Poet and the Pendulum (Wembley 2015) is a Nightwish song that I think might change your life.
    * Powerwolf is a good example of a band that does a lot of musical theater inspired stuff, and the band themselves even have "characters" and a sort-of backstory/lore about them that contextualizes their music. Sabaton sings songs about famous wars and battles. It's hard to explain to someone who is new to metal, but there is SUCH diversity within the umbrella of "metal" that it can be somewhat shocking to people that had no idea.

Greatest version of the Phantom ever recorded. Andrew Lloyd Weber chimed in over this piece and essentially said, 'that's what I meant'. Another reactor I listen to called this the "finish cast for Phantom". This is the song that I found Nightwish on. If you want some more to listen to, I highly recommend the Wacken Open air concert from 2013. The new lead is Floor Jansen. At the time of this concert she'd been with the band for something like 6 months. I've heard so many variations of the story the numbers are almost lost on me. She came to the band as a mid-tour replacement with 48 hours to learn their setlist in order that they band could continue without cancelling the tour. First night she sang, there are bits of up on youtube from the venue.. and she held her own; but, by the time they hit Wacken, it sounded like she wrote half the songs and had been with the band for a decade. That concert is a true tour de force. And Floor as with Tarja is classically trained. "Ghost Love Score" and "Storytime" are the two I'd recommend first. Ghost love score may be the most reacted to song on the internet, fyi, though it may be in competition with some of the Marc Martel Queen covers. I discovered these guys within the last year after discovering Liliac.. listening to one invariably introduced me to the other via reactions. Great react! Welcome to Nightwish. Cheers!

Nice reaction. Nightwish is one of the greatest live bands of all-time.
There is a little clip from their book in 2004, about covering this song:
    -----------------------
"On my trip around the world, I saw the musical Phantom of the Opera in London", Tuomas continues. "That's when the title theme totally hit me. I'd liked it for years, and it felt like it was finally time to cover it. It just so happened that after we'd recorded the song, I heard that a band called Dreams of Sanity had already covered it before us. But then again, does it really matter?"
Marco had a central role in Phantom of the Opera, too. "Perhaps I'm guilty of some over-interpretation", Marco laughs. "I was listening to the musical version of the song and I was like, 'Okay, there's no way I'm up for that, but maybe I could sing it as a raving loony." Someone on our forum made a big deal about it, like, 'Why do people always assume that the Phantom is a crazy lunatic? He's in love! Why can't you interpret him in a way that would show his sensitivity?'
But of course - the guy's just lurking masked in the sewers. Surely he's not mad, he's just in love!"
