Finnish metal always has some of the best production of anything. Sounds like they play in a cave 10 miles underground with the best acoustics possible. Great choice boys.
My grandmother had a lakeshore cabin in a rural area (Pohjois-Pohjanmaa), and near there was a particularly deep mine. Then it was turned into an ESA space radiation research station. Local heavy-metal band played the worlds deepest record launch gig there, at 1,3 kilometers underground.
I always love seeing a musical person analysing music as they hear it the first time. I cannot do that so I always marvel how some people just are so talented musically
Whenever I invest my attention into Wintersun, live or recorded I never regret that investment. I think they're very underrated. Ensiferum are awesome too 🤘
Hell yeah, finally Wintersun, but definitely "Land of Snow and Sorrow" is more repetitive in my opinion, "Sons of Winter and Stars" is more catchy I think or "Time" would've been better too. For the first album in case you guys give it a try, "Beautiful Death", "Battle Against Time" are excellent choices, if you go for popularity you probably will endup with "beyond the dark sun" is good, but not as good as the 2 I've mentioned. Can't wait for another try
I'm sure I've requested this before, but the studio video (from the Sonic Pump Studios sessions) for Sons of Winter and Stars is a MUST! An all timer for sure, and it's the kind of anything anyone can be amazed by.
Thanks for this video, been meaning to get into Wintersun for a while, checked out their first album but didnt really get into it. Loved the song you showed here though, so i went to check out the rest of the album and loved it.
I love Judsons analysis connected to his musical skills. For me, he can add small takes of basic music theory and how he looks at the compositions and how it relates to his world. Ian a guitarist myself and I am usually curious of how they think in other genres. Myrath for example that have Arabic and Middle Eastern elements which you clearly hear. Keep up the good work
Back in high school my buddy and I were obsessed with Ensiferum and tried so hard to start up a folk metal band. Iron or Tale Of Revenge is my vote for an Ensiferum reaction. I live in Australia and down here it’s currently winter, son 🥶
Love to see you doing some Wintersun. :) Wintersun are WAY heavier than Nightwish(or Epica), you just picked "the ballad" like you said in the video, I guess it's more popular cause it is easier listening. Wouldn't be my personal pick for a reaction video but love to see them on the channel and can't wait for their new album. \m/
Time or Sons Of Winter And Stars would have been great tracks to start off with. This is a cool song but it’s better in context with the rest of the album.
Wrong version guys. It has to be from rehersal session from Sonic Pump Studios. You have another chance with Sons of Winter and Stars or/and Time - don't blow it up. ;) Different cup of tea (in your face) would be Eternal Darkness :)
the extended heavy metal genres as they happened in historical order: new wave of British heavy metal comes, then inspires speed/thrash/power (all closely related). Death, doom, black and prog are further extensions coming out of that boom. It all happened in 5-10 years. All of them were thought of at the time as more 'extreme' in one way or another versions of the core heavy metal idea, meant to either supplant it or replace it in a highly competitive musical market of the 80s and early 90s. Hence heavy metal as the historical root can be seen as a 1970s to early 1980s thing and all the branches of extremity can be seen as a 90s and onwards thing. When people go 'blackened symphonic epic prog power death doom metal' they're basically saying 'this is an extreme metal band that has a lot of influences'. At some point what was extremity in the past becomes more rote to the trained and older audience (or due to shifting tastes, for a younger audience as well) as ironically when the hyperspeed, the blasting, all these extreme metal tricks are used all over and by everyone, all this music stops feeling extreme and goes back to being broadly what the culture understands as heavy metal. Extreme metal seems to be a term of the past, but it does contextualize and historicize bands like Wintersun (for which I have no preference so I will not comment on) Thankfully aside from all this genre talk, a good song is a good song, songwriting always wins, storytelling and mood and audio pictures always win, not who plays fastest or densest. So in a way it would be a very progressive outlook to just call all this shit heavy metal again and be done with it. Sure, being able to tell when a band is coming from Slayer or from Helloween or from Morbid Angel is important to get the metal culture, but it will be a waste of your time and energy to start talking about metal in these 'symphonic blackened death/doom' terms, your intuition is correct.
The bassist Jukka Koskinen is in 3 bands that all have an album release this year, Crownshift is the newest band, Wintersun Time ll is up next month and Nightwish of course in September. And Kai Hahto is his band-mate in both Nightwish and Wintersun. I don’t listen to a lot of Wintersun but like “Sons of winter and Stars” best and then “Time”
I'm hijacking this video to suggest doing Pig Destroyer again because i'm curious to hear both of your opinions. Something from Prowler in the Yard would be cool.
Sounds like the guitars 🎸 tuned to either drop C or open D at it has that very crunchy overly distorted bassy sound. It also has that very Nordic folk sound, I know that Children of Bodom used to play around with a lot.
Ever thought of the live version of Fairy Tale by Shaman? André Matos was a very accomplished pianist and does an improvisation at the start of the live version and the piece is very impressive and memorable, especially the live version.
This makes me want to hear his reaction to one of Aquilus' tunes. It's less riff based than Wintersun and the tunes are usually through composed, but I think Judson would enjoy em. I recommend one of the following: Nigh to her Gloam My Frost Laden Vale Into Wooded Hollows Loss
How you gonna show him this one first and not the Sonic Pump Studios version? Or Sons of Winter and Stars or Time? You gotta revisit now. Sonic Pump Studios version>>>>>>>>>>album version.
It's coincidental you did the "when did mom die" bit, because there's a song that Wintersun did called "Eternal Darkness (Autumn)" in which Jari took inspiration from the fact that his father died in the autumn.
I don't think there is a band out there more "advanced" in musical terms than Wintersun. Top musicianship, in pretty much all aspects. Having said that, 'Land of Snow and Sorrow' is probably not the right choice to enter their realm. 'Time' would probably be my top choice to begin to dig them.
Lovely intro haha. I don't think you've had Symphony X on the channel yet. Maybe Symphony X - Awakenings. I'd suggest The Odyssey but it's pretty long for a first listen to a band.
Left dude looks like Eminem with the cap... can't unsee! Ah yeah, Wintersun, saw them in 2005 on a festival where the band Norther also played, so I saw the new band of the old singer of Ensiferum and the old band of the new singer of Ensiferum, I think even back to back. Getting nostalgic as I google these old lineups...
Will be checking out more of these guys fo sho. Im a big fan of slowing things down to make the heavy heavier. Ps. May i recommend checking out the Ukulele Orchestra of Great Britain? Not for the channel, but I reckon they'll raise a chuckle, if not an eyebrow. Highway to Hell is a particular treat.
I’ve never made a suggestion for a song on your channel, but I’m compelled to request Nechochwen- The serpent tradition It won’t happen but I’d figure I’d try lol
If you haven't gone there yet, I suggest Dream Theater "Dance of Eternity" and Liquid Tension Experiment "Acid Rain" I think Judson would have fun with both.
5:00 now im wondering what the cut lecture was about 😂 Fitting analysis, it’s very montage-y music. Personally though, it’s just long and monotonous enough that maybe i’d skip to the bathroom or go make popcorn during that montage.
Agreed with the other comments, "Sons..." from the live version would be great to react to. More dynamic with heavier sections. Its a long song though.
Wintersun (and Ensiferum) would be Epic Power Metal I suppose. They are also very close to BM in their execution and themes. This tune was more Power Metal like though. They are definitely pushing the bounds from various genres away.
ok, sorry Judson, in min. 13:00 it looks like Win98's reaction to the latest version of World of Warship...🤘 Great band, difficult band but great. It will charm few people, but still 👍
This is a scenario where I feel like you should have gone through the entire album, simply because a single song isn't a complete representation of what the band or even the album has to offer.
As an addendum to anyone who is reading this on or after August 30th (2024) and is not familiar with the band, considering that Time II is releasing on August 30th, I would recommend listening to both Time I and II back to back since it was originally supposed to be just one album called Time.
Please make a reaction video about the avantgarde metal band THY CATAFALQUE . I highly recommend the Vadak record, especially the opening track called “ Szarvas”. Back in 2021 that album was international success among the metalheads, and also here in Hungary won all the prizes in rock/ metal category despite it’s an extreme metal album.
What makes people create so much metal in Finland? Winter, son.
Yes! Perfect! Best one yet
Not bad...Not bad...
Very Finnish joke.
Where the hell is all the Alaskan metal then?

You need to show him any of the songs that they played at Sonic Pump Studios.

We need more WIntersun! And it should always be the live version at Sonic Pump Studios.
Can't wait for the new Wintersun album in August, and your reactions to it. Snippets I have heard sound epic.
Been a while since I heard WinterSun! Thanks for that!
Makes me want to dig up the Wintersun and Ensiferum playlist
Trudging through the snow and seeing more of the same... Yes thats finland for you

Wintersun is awesome, glad you guys are covering them!
Time 2 out today! Great album!

jari was in it so yeah xD
Oh boy, Judson about to fall in love
Should’ve done the Sonic Pump version though
Wintersun is one my favourite bands and this album is their greatest so far.
You pronounced Jari effortlessly perfectly. Amazing
Hell yeah, finally Wintersun, but definitely "Land of Snow and Sorrow" is more repetitive in my opinion, "Sons of Winter and Stars" is more catchy I think or "Time" would've been better too.

I’m cracking up at Judson’s over the top expressions in the recent thumbnails. Five stars!
He says he likes being here for a minute. All i hear is that he's ready for sons of winter and stars live at sonic pump studios.

Love to see you doing some Wintersun. :)

Love the weird, triggering and awkward intros of Judson. This is obviously the new intro. Greetings from Chile 🥀
Next videos needs to be the ones from Sonic Pump studios... First Time and then Sons of Winter and Stars
I saw them live with this album in 2013... such an amazing experience, memories came back to me thanks to your video
Hope to see you guys do more Wintersun, but from the first album. That's the fast, aggressive & melodic stuff that'll get Judsons brain going!
I like this! The Sonic Pump trio, though :) please give us more!
loved judson's bach at the start
You can never go wrong with bach. The violin concertos and the french suites are a joy to listen to. 😁
Also, the drummer is Kai Hahto who also drums in Nightwish.
This is one of the best songs i know. Thanks for the reaction brothers! 🤘
Wintersun band from Finland.

Make him listen to Time!
Time or Sons Of Winter And Stars would have been great tracks to start off with. This is a cool song but it’s better in context with the rest of the album.
Have to admit, never heard of this band or song but it is beautiful!
Looking forward to the Ensiferum reaction. Always amazes me when musicians pick up a song by ear and just play it off of one hearing of it.
Epic Melodeth

Why? It's literally a worse version compared to the TIme 1.5 record when you remove the video.

They got Time II
Do Perennial quest by death
