Facts: There is two members from current Nightwish in this video. Kai is the obvious but the bassist Jukka Koskinen is since last year a full member of Nightwish, replacing Marko.
I absolutly love seeing people discover Wintersun for the first time, and react with such jaw-dropping surprise to all the different parts, melodies, and compositional layers (upon layers), that went into making this gorgeous masterpiece. For me the transitions with Jari's range from growls to clean vocals is just phenominally flawless. And wonderful Kai..like a human Machine Gun! The stories their songs tell is just as amazing.. A true 'gallop off on a quest' across snow-swept wintery landscapes, this song has always filled my heart to bursting with love and pure enjoyment. One of the most beautifully epic songs in metal. I saw an interview where Kai Hahto was asked: - Now that in Nightwish, how come you don't do that incredible stuff you did on Wintersun? He laughed and answered: - You don't do things because you CAN, you do what serves the song. Also, the Bass player Jukka is now in Nightwish !!! 🤘😎🤘.
I'm not a musician, but the drum play through /drum cam of Kai playing this is just 😮😍 So hooking to watch and listen to ❤ He's a beast. (And so humble and nice guy) I've even watched his "little drum warming studio" - which was like ..oh well.. some drummer reacted to that and at the end only wished he'd some day arrive at that level. ❤
Wintersun, Time, other bands can only dream of approaching this level. For me one of if not the greatest tracks of all time by the greatest band ever bar none who so may don't know about.
i find it crazy that people are finding wintersun because of nightwish, i get nightwish being super popular and more accessible but i see a lot of videos of people knowing Kai from nightwish but not people knowing him from wintersun in nightwish videos. I think wintersun is underrated, incredible band, in the metal world theyre pretty well known but theyre all so extremely talented that they need more recognition
You HAVE to check out "Time" from the same rehearsal session! One of the most gorgeous pieces of music ever created and probably my favourite song ever❤️
It´s nice to watch people reacting the first time to this band. Wintersun with Nightwish are those bands I never get tired to listen to. Now it is time to watch Time, for the next one to react to Wintersun. Thank you guys for this one, a good react from you. Till the next one, take care.
Nightwish & Wintersun are just two examples of bands from the kingdom of metal music, which is Finland. We have over 700 metal bands per 1M citizens, no other country comes even close - e.f. the U.S. has just over 70/1M. Other great Finnish metal bands include Amorphis, Battle Beast, Ensiferum, Stratovarius, Sonata Arctica, Apocalyptica, Beast In Black, just to mention a few.
Great reaction guys. Thats their kitchen sink song, they throw everything at it lol. Wintersun is the more aggressive, melancholic but no less romantic version of Nightwish. Cant recommend the other 2 track from this rehearsal session enough. Both brilliant and truly inventive and a bit shorter too! Thanks again guys, good luck with the gigs 😃🤘🏻
This is the ultimate crowd participation song. I saw them doing this live about 6 yrs ago at a small metal festival in Finland and the crowd were mental, everyone knew all the words . One of the best experiences of my life. Fuckin goosebump city 🤘
Lead singer Jari Maenpaa had contracted Tuberculosis during his military service, and has diminished lung capacity because of it. He has stopped playing guitar live, to focus on the vocals. Teemu Mantysaari on guitar, and Jukka Koskinen on bass(also now with Nightwish). Kai is listed as on hiatus since 2017. There are 2 more songs from this session on RUclips. They are shorter, relatively. lol. Time is 12 minutes, and Land of Snow and Sorrow is 8 minutes.
I just paused this video at 0:01 to tell you, that if you loved the drumming of Kai in previous videos, you are going to faint once you see this one. That man is a machine behind the drum kit. And the rest of the band... Yeah, you are about to find out. This one is a ride you will never regret taking. :) And now to continue the video and see your reactions! :)

This is ONE song with 4 parts - but definitely one song. Here's the tracklist from the album "Time I": 1. "When Time Fades Away" 4:08 2. "Sons of Winter and Stars" I. "Rain of Stars" II. "Surrounded by Darkness" III. "Journey Inside a Dream" IV. "Sons of Winter and Stars" 13:31 3. "Land of Snow and Sorrow" 8:22 4. "Darkness and Frost" 2:24 5. "Time" 11:45 6. "Sons of Winter and Stars (Acapella)" (Limited edition bonus hidden track1) 3:50
What is more amazing, they are playing WITH CLICK TRACK and there are tons of stuff in backing tracks (keys, chorals, effects, spoken words etc.) - you actually can see Macbook (pro) behind Kai's shoulder that has tracks playing. Jukka Koskinen, the bassist, is also with Nightwish nowadays.
Tuomas and Kai have a Nightwish preceding history and an on-and-off presence in a black metal band called Darkwoods My Betrothed. They recently released new material. Jari Mäenpää has spend years creating and refining his epic folk-inspired melodic death metal. Ensiferum is one of the Finnish Folk Metal Big 5. The others are Korpiklaani, Turisas, Finntroll and Moonsorrow. Then there's their forefather Amorphis. All accomplished bands worth checking out.
Loneliness from Forests seasons, is a dong Jari wrote to his fathers passing and that really shows his singing ability. Plus it is a beautiful tribute😢❤
Hail Finland, Helsingin bändit, HellSinging, no wonder Finland is the capital of metal. Most bands per capita and the best band of them all, Nightwish, though Wintersun is certainly amazing too.
Sons of Winter and Stars is a great example of why Kai Hahto (drummer) has the very well earned nickname of "The Metal Metronome." No matter how complex the pattern, fill, or blast, he is always precisely on the beat.
Glad you enjoyed this. Wintersun started as Jari's (lead vocals & rhythm guitar here) side project. He had some songs he had written that did not fit with his current bands sound/style. You wanted to see them live, here is a live version of "Time" they did as an encore in LA in 2018. ruclips.net/video/kYOxgNarWVw/видео.html The video / audio quality is not bad for a live shot. While Jari usually plays everything but the drums in studio, he is often does not play anything live so he can move / interact with the audience better. This is with, I believe, Rolf Pilve (Stratovarius) on drums & Asim Searah on rhythm guitar. Jukka Koskinen the Bassist here is also now in Nightwish having stepped in when Marko left the band.
If you think this song was long, just wait until you react to Nightwish - The Greatest Show on Earth (BTW, when you do, you will probably want to include the outro from Wembley at the end if you do Tampere version, trust me).
I don't normally care for overly longer songs, but there's so much awesomeness going on here that I can't help but love it. The only problem with these guys is that you're lucky if get two albums per decade.
Loved the active listening and review, not just another "wow thats good" and thats it. Was all true reaction and opinions. Listen to Octavarium (23') or Six degrees of inner turbulence (40') by dream theater!
There's no video for it but Battle Against Time is my favorite Wintersun song. Had to mention it. Totally agree with the others that have suggested you check out the song Time from the same rehersal, though.
Really enjoyed your reaction videos of this one and time! I liked your explanation of your perspective and went very professionally about it. Best reaction video out there. Props for setting things straight ahead by saying 'this is a whole other level'. If you really enjoyed it you should consider battle against time, starchild and also death and the healing :)
Just dropping by to say I stumbled upon your channel yesterday and I'm really enjoying it. I discovered Wintersun at some point in 2008 and 15y later I am still blown away by their skill and the atmosphere they create. I really like your comments on the technical side of things, too. Would love to see you react to Amorphis some time.
Wintersun - Time is right up there with this song, and from the same rehearsal A bit on the tangential comment, but I also recommend reacting to original Nightwish singer Tarja (not Anette) material, especially Phantom of the Opera where Marko and Tarja go absolutely nuts
Been to their gig over decade ago... ticket was like 10€ and they played half a mile from my place in this legendary metal music live house in Jyväskylä, Finland... was very awesome, yes... seen also many other Finnish acts there. :)
hey guys, surprising isn't it ;o) TIME is next - both Kai and Jukka (bass) are now in Nightwish. Will be interesting to see if NW will make use of Jukka's vocal abilities on their next album. They start rehearsing/recording the next album from july 1st.
I think much of the backing vocals are coming from the backing track. You really can't hear all of the huge amount of tracks playing on the background in this version, because it is mixed a bit like a live recording. In the album version you can hear better everything that is happening in the song. In this studio project demonstration Jari tells that their are 1700 tracks in this song: ruclips.net/video/hl6CmmerR8c/видео.html All the 1700 tracks (mostly midi) are of course not playing at the same time, since the song is long and has many parts. But that caused Jari some problems when mixing that album, since the mixing software can't handle that many tracks.
Hi guys! Please, listen Dan Vasc. He is metal singer. He is so good. Listen Nemo (Nightwish') , Dawn of Victory (Rapsody on Fire) . He sing with Fabio Lione ( Rapsody on Fire vocalist, Angra, Shaman)
This song is called business card for the Wintersun. They play it live exactly the same way. This was literally live playthrough practice session that they just recorded in studio. (I'm guessing it's actually two different takes for the video.) It's not their best song but it includes pretty much all the styles and techniques they use. The "Time" from the same session is their best song. And the Loneliness is also great song. And after seeing/reacting to the original song Loneliness, this great cover is also worth checking out: LONELINESS - WINTERSUN (Cover By CHARME) ruclips.net/video/kxNwtFV_kWM/видео.html
Another great reaction! My third favorite band after Nightwish and Epica. These guys are so epic. Their music feels like a movie score for nordic folk tales or Viking sagas. Wintersun was founded as a side project by Jari from his folk metal band Enisferium. They split with him over a disagreement on him wanting to spend more time on Wintersun. Jari is a known perfectionist and each song on the Time album has over 200 tracks so the mixing is a nightmare. In fact it has been said that the computers weren't powerful enough when the album was first recorded and they had to wait for the technology to improve before the could mix it. One amazing fact is that Jari is missing about 25% of one of his lungs. It had to be removed after he contracted tuberculosis during his mandatory military service. At the end where you guys heard the Irish shanty influence I always feel like I am on a longboat rowing across the sea on some epic quest. You guys definitely need to do Time from the same studio play through. It is even better then Sons of Winter and Stars IMO and one of my favorites. I also love their song Loneliness (Winter) from the Forest Seasons album. As a northern New England guy that song perfectly captures the desolation and quiet of a winter forest. Jari wrote the song after his father's passing so it has a double meaning. The lyric video by the band is outstanding. If you want to check some of Jari's work with Enisferium I would recommend Lai Lai Hei, ruclips.net/video/eMXGruO8zBU/видео.html or Treacherous Gods, ruclips.net/video/1HphiKoduC8/видео.html. There are some live videos of these song s but with different singers since they are all from after Jari left.
Just checked and you guys haven't checked out Epica yet. Female fronted Dutch symphonic metal band. They are the darker /heavier cousin of Nightwish. Lot's of reactors find them through their song Sancta Terra from their 10th anniversary concert because Floor is a guest singer on the song. It is great song and Simone and Floor's voices together are amazing but not a typical Epica song. Unleashed from the same Retrospect concert is a great introduction or Skeleton Key (music video or live from Omega Alive) to get some of Mark's harsh vocals. If you want to go heavy then Consign to Oblivion live from the Zenith in Paris is the way to go.
Knowing what a perfectionist Jari is, and seeing Jukka doing some backup singing makes me hope that Jukka's voice is good enough that he can do some singing on Nightwish's next album.
The blonde guy is Jari, he writes all music and lyrics for Wintersun, and also, his lung capacity is about 70% due to a badly treated TBC when he was in military. Also, I don't think Jari's been mainly influenced by Nightwish, he's getting influenced by many different bands - his main influence was probably Devin Townsend, I think -, but he's just doing his own unique thing, as always. Listen to his early demo songs from the 90's.
Great reaction guys. Wintersun is amazing. Another band for you is Diabulus In Musica. On the scale of Nightwish to Wintersun, in my opinion they shade toward Wintersun, but like Nightwish they have a superb female frontwoman and incorporate more symphonic compositional elements. The best representation on YT is the live performance of Lies in Your Eyes...ruclips.net/video/Y4P900PG-SE/видео.html The Napalm description says "the finest operas, rough growls, epic choirs, orchestral intermezzi and pure metal".
There's a lot of death metal influence- in the form of melodic death metal. You have to understand that melodeath is very, very different from traditional death metal. I haven't checked out your full channel yet, but if you look into melodeath bands like Insomnium, Soilwork, or Mors Principium Est, you'll understand how vast the range of specific *melodic* death metal is. It's totally its own thing, and worth deep diving.
Definitely melodic death metal sounds with everything else mixed in. It reminds me some of Insomnium a Finnish melodeath band. Thanks for doing this so I'd come across it and remind me of Wintersun. I needed something different. I definitely hear the folky power metal mixed with all this too halfway or more. The changes remind me some of Winterhorde. They have a 360 rehearsal video with more of a live sound. You can spin around the room and see everyone. More similar to all this with less of the folky power metal sound.
Have you done a reaction to Unleash the Archers song Awakening? The full band play through video is fire. It isn’t as long as this song but all of their albums are concept albums and they are really cool. From Vancouver, BC.
Hi, super reaction, bassist Jukka Koskinen, he also joined Nightwish instead of Marko about a year ago, it's a pity he doesn't sing because you can see that he can sing, greetings
This song is actually divided into 4 parts on the album track listing. It goes like this: #2 Sons of Winter and Stars i) Rain of Stars ii) Surrounded by Darkness iii) Journey Inside a Dream iv) Sons of Winter and Stars The other epic song on this album is the title track...Time. It's 11:45 in length, and is very similar to this song, but different, of course. Check that one out next.
OK, you're starting connect the musical dots. We have Wintersun with Kai and Jukkis on bass, now both of Nightwish. How about we continue the Black Metal journey and take a look at Darkwoods My Betrothed, with Kai and none other than Tuomas Holopainen of Nightwish. Ya, Tuomas is also in a Black Metal band. ruclips.net/video/NtU4v_u7pUs/видео.html And if you didn't think that was enough of a stretch, how about another Tuomas project, Auri, which is all about folk metal. The singer is his wife Johanna along with Troy of Nightwish and of course, Kai on drums. If I'm not mistaken, Kai started out as a jazz drummer. Talk about versatility.
Another interesting tangent is Ghost Brigade. Now defunct Finnish metal band that was something like ambient black metal... And glorious on its own way.
Do note that while Kai and Jukka have been hired to Nighwish later on, the genre is not the same and both bands have existed in their own spaces and genres simultaneously for quite a while. And when you talk about having multiple songs - in symphonic music those are typical and usually called movements. So that's one part that makes this metal symphonic.
This is what Kai said about the difference playing with Wintersun, Nightwish and Swallow The Sun (doom/death metal band): “ I realized that playing with Nightwish was much more physical than with some other bands. With Wintersun, for example, I didn’t have to move my arms so much, and with Swallow The Sun, the tempo was deliberately sluggish. Fortunately I realized early on that if I’d start banging like a maniac right from the get-go, I’d be dead by mid-set. “ Not being a drummer myself I would also said that he is more technical and fast with Wintersun but I’d say that playing with Nightwish is more physical, the drum kit is massive, so it makes sense when he said that he has to move his arms so much. I would like to share with you a drum cam recording playing a slow song with Nightwish, which you already know, Ghost Love Score ruclips.net/video/RI67HtPjWuk/видео.html and a faster Nightwish song “Wishmaster” ruclips.net/video/Yu-0SJCRozg/видео.html Just to see the difference. Kai is the human metronome. Great reaction guys! What an amazing band Wintersun is! Swallow The Sun is also a great band but he is not part of the band anymore.
That's interesting, because I'm sure he said elsewhere that he'd have to get into training to play with Wintersun again! I'm probably misremembering slightly...
@@elvwood: Those are different aspects of drumming. More physical here refers to the wider variety of elements in the kit and how many of them are used in same songs. Meanwhile Wintersun might get away with smaller kit - and less hand movement - but is technical and fast. So one requires more stamina, other more precision.
Its weird to see someone listen to this first time because i grew up with his music through Ensiferum and wintersun. Maybe they were the biggest thing only in Finland 😂
There are a lot of different options in the comments. I'll throw in my two cents. Darkness & Frost and Time is great (I still find Sons of Winter and Stars to be their ultimate song) if you want to give that a listen. If you listen to anything from "The Forest Seasons", give Winter a try, it's a more mellow song but full of emotion. For live performances, I LOVE songs from their first album. Just note though, that the first album is really lacking in vocal range. Lots of screaming (which I personally love), but not much else. Time I definitely upped the vocal range of this band. Battle against time is a NON STOP heavy song. Tons of blast beats, amazing guitars, great song for a workout Starchild is another fantastic song, has more clean vocals than most of the songs on that album Beautiful Death might be my all time favorite song from them, and it's amazing in person. Here's a great live version that's taken from the audioboard: ruclips.net/video/5akpX5j7niY/видео.html
This epic proves the utter futility of trying to ascribe fanciful names to differnt styles - all it does is allow you to stop every few seconds and say "I wasn't expecting that". Just listen - and enjoy -and appreciate the talent. Jari's vocals are, no doubt, influenced by the fact that he had half of one lung removed when he contracted TB during is military service. I thoroughly recommend "Time" next.
The folk influence without a doubt from him starting Ensiferum back in the day who are a folk metal band with some slight black metal influences in the beginning (with some harsh vocals in a couple of tracks). I haven't listened to them for a while (mainly the early to mid 2000's), but I believe Jari originally started that band and quit in 2004 just befor starting Wintersun. The "Irish" vibe you hear is just a European folk vibe. The "death metal" influences are melodic death metal influences which can be a bit less heavy and (hence the name) more melodic, but I agree that the vocals are more black than death metal. Also, while I don't know that much about Nightwish/Kai, I do know he was in Wintersun way before he joined Nightwish. Rotten Sound (his band before Wintersun) is a grindcore band. I haven't checked them out yet, but I can imagine the songs being pretty fas since it's a grindcore band.
This version is better than the studio version where the symphonic stuff takes over too much. The vocals are amazing. Especially the Danny Elfman-esque section about seven minutes in. But also the ones where the main vocals are clean with backing growls and vice versa. The guitar parts are excellent too. Both riffs and melodies. 14 minutes that doesn't feel that long...
Its also important to recognize that not only Kai but the bass player are both current members of Nightwish.
Sometimes I think of them as Winterwish. LoL
@@TaverenTech they wanted some time off to chill, so they now play 10 minute tracks at half the tempo.
@@TaverenTech or NightSun 😂
Oh really? Did not know that NW's new bassist was this guy.
Jukka Koskinen is his name by the way.

Land of Snow and Sorrow are in lack of better words so freezing cold to listen to.
I need to hear that acapella version.
Good to see reactors who can appreciate this for the sonic masterpiece it is!
Is t it enjoyable to discover bands and different talents? Good reaction.
There is a great Kai only version. Some drum clinic I guess. It's shows the unbelievable techical nyances of his drumming. One the the greatest!!

Yep. There is something heavy in our water here in Finland 🤘🇫🇮😂
I was pretty doubtful that they could pull this off live. I was completely wrong; they did it flawlessly in Tuska festival some years ago.
First time on this channel, long time Wintersun fan. Love your take guys, also good chemistry and entertaining. Cheers
Greeting`s from Finland. the home of Wintersun & Nightwish... 💪
This. IS. Live.
Masterpiece
Nice reaction. Are you aware that the bassist, Jukka is the current Nightwish bassist.
Nice you noticed my recommendation. Nice song. The singer lost part of his lungs due to tuberculosis. Amazing what his voice is capable of.
this is a masterpiece that is even hard to comprehend
When foreigners are asking about Finnish metal, this is the band I recommend first.

I discovered Wintersun at some point in 2008 and 15y later I am still blown away by their skill and the atmosphere they create. I really like your comments on the technical side of things, too. Would love to see you react to Amorphis some time.
Wintersun - Time is right up there with this song, and from the same rehearsal
A bit on the tangential comment, but I also recommend reacting to original Nightwish singer Tarja (not Anette) material, especially Phantom of the Opera where Marko and Tarja go absolutely nuts
I concur.
Jukka, the basist, is the one who replaced Marko in Nightwish
Check out who plays guitar on Megadeth right now 😅
Been to their gig over decade ago... ticket was like 10€ and they played half a mile from my place in this legendary metal music live house in Jyväskylä, Finland... was very awesome, yes... seen also many other Finnish acts there. :)
Plenty of post-production and vocal layering. That was SAF! Loved it!
🤘😎🤘
It is not all about The Kai... Hey, it is Winterson and all is BRILLIANT
Jukka Koskinen the bassist is now the bassist for Nightwish!
😁🇫🇮💙🪄🎼✨💯🤘
Only from Finland 🤘😁👍💙🇫🇮
A song with four movements like this in 'ye olden times' would be called a symphony. It's structured that way on purpose.
❤Amazing ❤ Winterson, Nightwish and Sabaton❤❤❤❤ thank you❤
'Time' would've been a better introduction to the band imo. This one is quite overwhelming.
hey guys, surprising isn't it ;o) TIME is next - both Kai and Jukka (bass) are now in Nightwish.
In this studio project demonstration Jari tells that their are 1700 tracks in this song: ruclips.net/video/hl6CmmerR8c/видео.html
All the 1700 tracks (mostly midi) are of course not playing at the same time, since the song is long and has many parts.
There bass player also replaced marco in nightwish 2021
This song is called business card for the Wintersun. They play it live exactly the same way. This was literally live playthrough practice session that they just recorded in studio. (I'm guessing it's actually two different takes for the video.) It's not their best song but it includes pretty much all the styles and techniques they use. The "Time" from the same session is their best song. And the Loneliness is also great song.
And after seeing/reacting to the original song Loneliness, this great cover is also worth checking out:
LONELINESS - WINTERSUN (Cover By CHARME)

They call it a rehearsal because that's exactly how they'll play it live. I know. Un-fucking-believable.
Do give ensiferum a try, especially lai lai hei. The original version was sung by Jari Maenpa
Knowing what a perfectionist Jari is, and seeing Jukka doing some backup singing makes me hope that Jukka's voice is good enough that he can do some singing on Nightwish's next album.
Tuomas has said that Jukka will not be singing on the next album, Just Floor and Troy, I still miss Marko🇬🇧
@@tracyfarnath2270 You're not the only one who misses Marko.
@@WNYretiree ♥️😒
If you like Kais metal drumming you should check Rotten Sound.
New sub because of Wintersun!
in my opinion kai is the best drummer in the world, he can play everything.
You NEED to check out the other tracks on the Time I album. I couldn't possibly decide which is best.
This song had over 1600 tracks in mixing table.
There's also a "Drum Through" of this song! 🙂
Melodic death metal is the genre you are looking for :)
He might
This song is actually divided into 4 parts on the album track listing. It goes like this:
#2 Sons of Winter and Stars
i) Rain of Stars
ii) Surrounded by Darkness
iii) Journey Inside a Dream
iv) Sons of Winter and Stars
The other epic song on this album is the title track...Time. It's 11:45 in length, and is very similar to this song, but different, of course. Check that one out next.
Masterpiece. Do Time and Land of Snow and Sorrow from the same session!
Thanks
Wintersun is symphonic melodic death metal.
Ya, Tuomas is also in a Black Metal band. ruclips.net/video/NtU4v_u7pUs/видео.html
And if you didn't think that was enough of a stretch, how about another Tuomas project, Auri, which is all about folk metal.
Wintersun - Loneliness (winter) is a beautiful song you should check out
Do note that while Kai and Jukka have been hired to Nighwish later on, the genre is not the same and both bands have existed in their own spaces and genres simultaneously for quite a while.
Not being a drummer myself I would also said that he is more technical and fast with Wintersun but I’d say that playing with Nightwish is more physical, the drum kit is massive, so it makes sense when he said that he has to move his arms so much.
@@JariJuslin thanks!
The guy on bass (confusingly, another Jukka) is the newest member of Nightwish, replacing Marko.
There's is Kai AND Jukka in Nightwish now 😉
Its weird to see someone listen to this first time because i grew up with his music through Ensiferum and wintersun. Maybe they were the biggest thing only in Finland 😂
If you thought this was amazing, Time will blow your brains out.
They are interesting. Jukka looks different with a beard than he looks in this video.( full beard with Nightwish)
Tons of blast beats, amazing guitars, great song for a workout
Starchild is another fantastic song, has more clean vocals than most of the songs on that album
Beautiful Death might be my all time favorite song from them, and it's amazing in person.
