Probably not gonna read this, but the churches they burned here in Norway were from the 1200's. That means they were burning important historical monuments in a way. They're also pretty cool to go to since you can stand in a 800 year old building, it feels awesome

I’ve been playing morrowind recently and there is a demon in it called “hunger”. Everything time one comes up I sing this song and now my three year old does it too. One will be featured on the loading screen and he will run up to the image and say “I feed my hunger, by following the freezing moon.” It is so cute with the little growl he does
holy sh*t, morrowind brings back so many memories. still one of my favorite games of all times. i'm still waiting for skywind to get released so i can finally play it again with graphics that fit my nostalgia glasses xD
@ send their names my way and I’ll definitely check them out. I alway wanted to write a black metal song about Neravar. No morrowind song will ever beat dagoth synth though 😂
Dimmu Borgir's The Chosen Legacy to show off Hellhammer's crazy bass drum work in the middle of the song sprouting another generation of young drummers.
I remember seeing mayhem live in 2017 and they didn’t let anyone record or take pictures of them as they wanted to maintain a dark atmosphere on stage.
This song is the beginning of black metal. Musically speaking, the most important about this song is the riff that starts at 4:50 of this video. That riff and the one that follows. At least that's the core. Bands before this did the low production thing, did the aggressive drumming thing, did the eerie atmosphere thing, did the simple repetitive riffs, did the evil lyrics and image thing, did all that. Except this. That type of riff was basically invented by Euronymous (and Snorre), and this was the song that set the ball rolling for the sound which is the defining feature of black metal (or 2nd wave of black metal to be more precise). They didn't invent it out of nothing of course, they were influenced by earlier bands (listening to demos and albums of Sadistik Exekution, Tormentor, Parabellum, Reencarnacion, Sarcofago, etc, who came close to that), but this song is the beginning of that continuous tremolo picking riff, where lots of same length notes are stringed together to make a melody. So, Mayhem and this song are the genesis of black metal because they established the elements of black metal: first and foremost, as the differentia specifica - that tremolo riff, and besides it also the blast beat drumming, plus the eerie parts or parts of the song with slower minimalist repetitive riffs, and 'evil' lyrics and image. Mayhem made this song in 1990, and it spread via gigs and bootlegs, they recorded it in 1990 and published it in 1993 on the Live in Leipzig album, this specific recording was made in 1993 published in 1994. The Live in Leipzig version has Dead on the vocals.
Show him some atmospheric black metal like Summoning or maybe even some epic black metal like Caladan Brood-I bet he would like that. Summoning-Flammifer or Caladan Brood-Echoes of Battle would be my choice
I know, I have been begging for Caladan Brood here for a long time now. I'd rather have him react to Wild Autumn Wind or To Walk The Ashes of Dead Empires though because Echoes of Battle has a 2 chord progression through much of the song and might be too static for Judsons taste(I love the track but as a musician thats my recommendation).
I’m a Norwegian. The thing about the 21 maximum prison sentence is not correct. In a lot of cases you can get something called “forvaring”, which means that you will get a new sentence after the 21 years if you’re still a danger to the society, meaning that for example Anders Breivik and a lot of others never will be released from prison. So you have a life time sentence in Norway. I understand that it’s confusing and we should change how we define it.
Every time i hear about those black metal characters i fall into a rabbit hole reading about them online. Absolutely WILD stuff... Fascinating, dark... Morbid stuff
It should be noted that the other person that Varg travelled with was Snorre W. Ruch AKA Blackthorne another member of Mayhem who, along with Euronymous and Varg is credited with creating the black metal guitar sound and tremolo picking style. He spent time in prison and between the murder and prison it f'ed him up really badly. He released a brilliant album under the name: "Thorns (self titled) where a number of black metal musicians assisted and from my interpretation is him grappling with what happened years earlier. He has been a session guitarist on other black metal albums like Satyricon's Age of Nero.
There are bands/artists for whom I can't separate the creator from their work to such an extent that the work becomes inaccessible to me. That's how it is for me with Mayhem, Burzum (which is brilliant). I also feel somewhat the same about Dostoevsky, whose great works are overshadowed by his hatred for my country.
I understand why this would be an acquired taste, but credit has to be given, where it's due: drummer Hellhammer is a force of nature, he is pushing 60, and still one of the best drummers out there. And Attilla Csihar.. either you love him, or you hate him, but personally I think he has some of the craziest, most unhinged vocals in all of metal.. 🤘
Best black metal band to introduce to someone in the classical sphere would be Aara in my opinion. Especially with songs like Stein Auf Stein which takes a lot of Baroque inspiration in it's melodic structure.
For something with higher energy i think a good album to visit would be Under the Sign of Hell by Gorgoroth (the original, not the remixed version). Great black metal album. Gotta have some decent volume going though or it’s not the same.
I think I read before that the reason black metal sounded different is because the black metal guys thought death metal guys were posers and not extreme so they wanted it to sound more extreme.

I'm curious what Richard wrote on his phone for Judson to read whilst he was talking. Towards the end of the video. About 19 minutes in. It is really odd.
The laws have obviously changed over time, but at the time there was a max sentence of 21 years. Now it's 30 years I think, which would be for terrorism. Varg got 21.
Pearl Jam played on piano reminds me of all the piano music used on the Jered Boosters channel. On a different note if you want claustrophobic music perfect for winter look no further than "De mysteries dom Satanas" (Edit) It would be cool if you guys did something from Deathspell Omega. Possibly my favorite black metal band. Kenos, or Chaining the Katechon and look up the lyrics also because they are completely stultifying.
If your doing Black Metal you need to do Emperor the kings of norwegian symphonic black metal. I would do the first 2 songs on Anthems to the Welkin at Dusk one of the best black metal albums imho. I would do Alsvartr (The Oath) which is the intro song that builds up to and leads into Ye Entrancemperium.
