I love it when bands go all out on aesthetic. It’s not necessary, but man do I enjoy the full-blown role playing. I think it brings their performance to another level.
It's ritualistic. Everything we do in life is ritual and paying homage to the ancestors, Gods, Goddesses and enlightened ones. With the tech we have now and the ability to focus on the aesthetic with the use of AI, CG and general video editing maybe we should use it to our advantage as imagery is powerful and goes into our subconscious. I always thought Rob Zombie must have had a deep awareness of this as when you drop acid (Apparently 😆) or some entheogen's you can have visual footage behind your minds eye of imagery past, present and future, like the GOGO dancers of the 1960s. Everything is captured in my opinion by the collective conscious or akashic records.
Much respect to Atilla for always nailing it in the costume department. Dude isn't just a great vocalist, but an incredible performer, and the way he moves combined with his outfits really makes it all believable. Maybe to some this may sound silly, but to me, he is like a black metal version of Alice Cooper.

Ordo ad Chao is amazing and I think Wolfs Lair Abyss is an incredibly underrated album also. I have seen mayhem perform at least twice (several years ago now) but they basically only played DMDS songs. Would love to see more variety.
I know I'm an idiot but I often find myself wondering how things would've been if Dead wouldn't have died. You know, much like similar situations...Bon Scott, Morrison, Randy Rhoads, etc. When that certain one is taken out, it makes you wonder what could have been. I'm here to say now that I believe that this band,(Mayhem) has done nothing but progressed since those days of dreary nonsense. To date, Mayhem is at its highest form.

wolf's lair abyss, chimera, ordo ad chao and esoteric warfare - all mastepieces and yet they never play any songs from these... Shame.
They went on tour as Wolfs Lair Abyss when it came out and did the album as a whole with a few extra songs.
I agree on WLA, the other albums didn’t have the Mayhem vibe for me anymore.
I saw them on their NA tour in 2015. And they had a pretty awesome setlist that included a lot of different stuff.
