  • After being defeated by our Lewmar portlights last winter, we solved the problem by throwing half of each window away.

    If you source some grinding paste (the stuff you would use to lap valves in an engine) you dip the end of the screwdriver in the paste this then makes the screwdriver bite into the screw making the removal of Pozidriv/Phillips type screws much easier.
    If you cant get grinding paste then you could mix some fine sand with grease not as good as grinding paste but it would do.
    Good on you for keeping an eye on peoples boats.

    • @SailingYachtSaltyLass

      I hope that Westerly did not do a "Bavaria" and get Lewmar (or whoever) to make "specials".

    I have to replace a crazed hatch so when it warms up (not till April) I will replace it and another important job I need to do is reseal the stanchions otherwise they will eventually leak so butyl tape to the rescue Happy New Year You two ❤️🥳

    i clamp the vice grips to the screwdriver , good leverage so you dont come off screw head.
    i replaced the ports forward, i needed a friend to hold the wrench on the inside. i dont have a friend, i made a friend out of a stick. put the wrench on the nut, wedged the stick bottom on bedding. it was and is the best friend i ever had, patient, never complained or offered annoying advice.
    the aft ports i just covered with poly carbonate ''bullet proof'' , in case you have a friend........

    • @SailingYachtSaltyLass
      @SailingYachtSaltyLass  3 года назад

      We did the "vice grips and screwdriver" thing and damaged the screwdriver and the seized bolt stayed where it was. Three were so seized that Mr AngleGrinder had to be called in...

    • @spymaine89
      @spymaine89 3 года назад +1

      @@SailingYachtSaltyLass AND YOU CHOSE to blame the method instead of the methodologist.. the point of increased leverage is not just force it is so you can go slow and incrementally. and feel the resistance. . if there is much resistance you know it will snap, you drip in penetrating oil and come back tomorrow .. i have screwed around a lot on old wood boats. i dont snap. i know my screws, ha ha ........steel ss bronze, copper tacks, brass ,nylon . i know some end up drilling out so far i have never had to...... i am as you said before.........''one with the screw'' ha ha ...carry on we enjoy you guys.

      @@spymaine89 - "... you drip in penetrating oil and come back tomorrow ..."
      In an ideal world, yes you would, but this was a window taken out and leaving a big hole in the boat with temperatures near zero and rain showers. It was going back in PRONTO, not tomorrow.
      The job is done. The windows are in. We are are snug and warm aboard.

      HNY! There was some swearing and cursing with a couple of seized bolts whose posidrives burred out, but the angle grinder took care of them and cut a new slot in them. We also think that the heat from the grinder help break them loose. But overall, it was a very straightforward process.

    Good job on replacing the window... I'm impressed! Question: the marina you are staying in, is that your home marina? or just spending some time there because of the lockdown...if so are you paying a monthly fee?

    • @SailingYachtSaltyLass
      @SailingYachtSaltyLass  3 года назад +1

      Well... the boat is UK registered in Liverpool but we have a year's contract in Carrickfergus due to The Bug and lockdown. We did some calculations that came out as follows:
      Winter rate + 2 months summer rate < Annual contract
      Winter rate + 3 months summer rate > Annual contract
      We could not see the Bug being sorted by 1st June so the Annual Contract from 1st April - 31st March was the cheapest option and we got a small discount for paying it in a lump sum.
      Come this March, we have to look at the situation and make the same kind of evaluation again.

    • @SailingYachtSaltyLass

      Just very slowly and carefully. A flat bladed screwdriver also helped in some spots - insert behind and gently twist the blade to act as a lever, but the "secret" was gentleness and patience.

    Can you please tell me were you obtained the Butyl tape? lots on google but non are marine grade. Interested as a Bavaria owner where you obtained the fixed window replacements?

    • @SailingYachtSaltyLass
      @SailingYachtSaltyLass  3 года назад

      Someone we know got an acrylic company to cut them to size based on the existing portlight. They were not sold as a ready-made thing. Apparently a lot of acrylic companies will cut to size if you give them a template. These are about 10mm thick and so are stronger than the portlights they replaced.
      We could not get "marine grade butyl" either so we got roofing grade butyl (12 year guarantee). If it needs replacing in the future then we will replace it. It is not a big job. We used this stuff:
