  • My Beneteau Oceanis 411 was built in year 2000 and has nine Lewmar portlights. After more than 20 years of UV-exposure and chemicals the the acrylic lenses had cracked severely.
It is not possible to buy replacement lenses for these New standard Mk1 portlight, so I decided to manufacture new ones.
After some research I found the a user called “Salty” on a Bavaria yacht forum had solved the problem: bavariayacht.org/forum/index.... (Thank you very much for an great article!)
Inspired by that article I started my own manufacturing, including routing the lenses with my own hand-router. Which is documented in this video.
I used a Partite 7310 glue. It makes a very strong joint and has a fairly long working time, 15-18 minutes. The glue is manufactured in US, but the only one I found selling it for individuals was e-teck in UK. A bit costly and long delivery time since UK is outside EU these days, but a great glue. One 50 ml cartridge was just enough for al 9 lenses (40 fittings) in two batches.
    www.e-teck.com/partite-7310-m...
I used 8 mm clear polycarbonate plastic of the brand ”Saphire”, with a hard surface coating with significant improved scratch resistance, UV-resistance etc. Still to be seen how it works in practice.

Fantastic video, thanks. I have two identical lewmar portlights from the same era that need the lenses replacing. I thought that I might be able to reuse the fittings, so it’s great to see how you were able to split them off like that!

Hi Jakob, many thanks for the great video! Everything is clear - but I would still ask you some details, if I may. You stated the size of the acrylic plus the hinge should be 27mm. Did you measure the thickness of the acrylic itself at the recessed area? As I have no tools a place to cut the acrylics myself in need to give someone the measurements including the thickness at the recessed areas. I think that the hinges have all the same size, so the thickness of the recessed areas should also be a definite size? To the glue you used: is it possible to use only a part of the 50ml of the 7310 or if you open it it is done? Thanks a lot, Andras

      Hi,
No i dont have that measurement. But it should be 27 mm minus the hinge thickness. Yes, same for all.
The glue tubes can be be used several times but you need to use a new nozzle each time.
      Good luck with your project!

Thanks for posting...this is a current project for me and your video is a fantastic help!
PS I have the MK2 I guess on my 2002 Catalina C380 ...is there any danger of breaking the fittings while breaking the glue?

Hi, Thanks for your feedback, appreciate it :)
I don't think so. Be careful and try it out. I think the glass will break before.. ;)

@@jakobmagnusson5603thanks for the reply ...your glue is not available in Australia (in my searches at least) is this very specialised or would an epoxy be ok do you think?

    Hi Jakob
What was the diameter of your router bit? It seems as though the hinge corners are less than the usual half inch (6.3mm radius). Thanks for any advice.

Hi Alex, I don't remember. But it needs to be same diameter or smaller I assume...

Jakob, Very nice video. I have the MKI lenses in a Beneteau 423 and would like to do the same. I have not yet found 8mm thick acrylic or polycarbonate available in the US. Do you have any thoughts about using 9.5mm (3/8" - a US standard size) and recess the hinge and lever more to maintain an appropriate fit?

      Hi David,
      Thank you.
I believe it world work fine. The magic number is the 27 mm, which you could achieve with a deeper recess.
I heard from my supplier that some material, acrylic I think it waste, has varying thickness on the same sweet. Just to be aware
      Good lucka!

@@sailinglillamy5028 9.5mm acrylic with a deeper recess to match the magic 27mm dimension worked fine!! I now have 7 new portlight lenses. She looks new inside with much more light coming into the cabin. Thanks for the inspiration and the how-to knowledge!! Now to replace two deadlights, two hatch lenses, and the washboards.

Veldig bra beskrivelse.

      Mvh
