Very helpful but i use the silicone to joint the ends

Good video, but I'm certain the join should go at the top, where there is little potential for water intrusion.

Thank you! It's definitely never a bad thing to have the join at the top! So far we have yet to experience any complaints of leakage when it comes to using a marine-grade sealant and super glue 😁

You didn't mention how you measured the gasket material.

I'm guessing that if the previous gasket was glued in with silicone you would have had one heck of a time removing it and all of the previous silicone.

The previous gasket in this video was actually glued in with silicone! It definitely took some elbow grease, but making sure it's all taken out as much as possible before replacing it can really help the next gasket bed tightly! Acetone and a good tool can help the process, as well as pulling the gasket as shown 😁

You say to put the rounded side of gasket down...or into groove...Is this really correct? Seems like the flat side should go into groove and rounded side should be up. Please advise. Thanks, Walt

Hi Walt! Yes, this is the proper way to install gasket. We (and Steve) made sure to check with Manship and all appropriate resources before installation. Installing gasket the opposite way may actually cause weakness and a looser seal overall, as well as less water tightness when the portlight is dogged down.

Hello Ed! Thank you for your comment! Just to clarify, these are Man Ship portlights. Man Ship portlights are 316 fabricated/formed stainless (not aluminum or stamped stainless), so the construction and gasket installation are quite different. This installation method is consistent with the original production Man Ship uses and we've found it to be exceedingly effective! It does require bedding the gasket with marine grade silicone. All of our portlights are manufactured to ABYC standards and have CE approval according to ISO/DIS 12216. 😁
