Today I’m taking the worlds longest sleeper train across Australia, known by many as The Ghan. This luxury sleeper train is iconic, and steeped in history, with routes from the 1920’s.
I’ve booked the best suite onboard, known as Platinum class, so let’s see what it’s like? As always I'll show you exactly what the experience is like, from fine dining, first class amenities such as the exclusive lounge car, or indeed the double bed on rails! It’s a unique train experience and you’re coming with me all the way to from Adelaide.

Keep up with good videos
@@Nag825 thank you :)
@@Trektrendy can I correct your pronunciation of the Ghan it's a silent h so just say gan like Can 😊😉
OMG PLEASE COME TO NEW ZEALAND!! YOUR SO CLOSE TO US
I love your videos. Will you do the Blue Train in South Africa?
As an Australian most of us have heard of these epic train journeys, but the cost limits those who can actually do it, so glad you were doing more videos about I really hope you are doing the east coast as there are just so many things to see.
I'm with you on the cost restrictions. I watch these vicariously, as with my health/ finances my travel budget allows for admittedly nice beach trips at the caravan park, but I don't ever expect to afford luxury travel. I just told my 4 year old she can earn lots of money to take us both on the Ghan when she grows up :-)
It's ridiculous. I can cruise to NZ, in a balcony cabin, for almost 2 weeks ex Sydney for roughly the same price as a trip on either The Ghan or Indian Pacific, that's not including flights from Sydney to/from Darwin, Adelaide, or Perth. As much as I'd love to do either, or both, trains, with my partner's mobility issues and the value proposition, I'll be heading to sea instead.
This is expensive for you? LOL, sounds like you need to get a job and work a bit harder
@@nathanshritt997 Well not that you would care about getting a better job or working harder, sounds like you have never had to work a day in your life. I have, & for you to have a go at me for saying this is expensive just goes to show you are seriously out of touch, & show some respect you rich little daddy's boy.
@@nathanshritt997 I assure you I work very hard.
I've always wanted to do these iconic Australian train trips -- and I live here, you know? There's really no excuse, although, I don't exactly have lots of money for luxury holidays -- but it's so lovely to see your videos onboard these trains. I've been looking forward to this video, ever since your "Indian Pacific" trip.
Sadly, these days the Ghan and the Indian Pacific have been turned into luxury holiday excursions and are beyond the price range of many people. I travelled on the Indian Pacific in 1991 when it was a scheduled passenger service and it cost me around $400 for the trip between Perth and Sydney, all meals included, great service and a very comfortable sleeper cabin to myself. The only trains comparable today in Australia operate in Queensland, as you probably know. I travelled recently on the Spirit of Queensland from Brisbane to Cairns in First Class for $380, again in a very comfortable bed and all meals provided. Next on my to do list is Brisbane to Longreach on the Spirit of the Outback.
I have done both and going on the IP next year again. I feel that the Aussie train trips are not a touch on the European counterparts.
The Canadian trains have become luxury holidays, not in my price range!
I’ve done it . Best experience in my life ! Do it
Ive always wanted to go on the ghan and i live in adelaide
Both your air and train travel videos are fantastic, but something about these train videos are so addicting! The story telling, cinematography, your British charm and the amazing production makes me want to watch these videos nonstop!! Keep up the great work! I could watch these all day. You’ve inspired me to take a 18 hour sleeper train this December! - Fan from Oregon USA
When i was 13, we moved from America to Alice Springs in the australian outback. We took the Ghan down to Adelaide for a vacation, but we were in the seats that were basically like an airplane.Let me tell you, as someone who used to live about 3 hours from Baltimore, suddenly being out in the desert at night is TERRIFYING. I have never looked out a window and seen complete darkness (there was no moon and it was cloudy). And what made it worse? The train slowed and stopped TWICE in the MIDDLE OF THE NIGHT! Still a cool experience, but as a kid that was horror movie level shit lol.
But seeing this video, Id love to go back and do the first class version!
I don't know why, but I've always dreamed of a trip on a sleeper train. But they don't look like they'd work with a wheelchair. So I watch videos like this and live vicariously through you. Thanks!
It looks as though the Ghan and the Indian Pacific both have accessible gold class rooms. Presumably some others would as well. Good luck finding one you want to do.
Same, videos like these made me feel secure and comfortable in a way? I love small spaces and trains are beautiful 💗 Unfortunately I cannot travel atm, but maybe one day!! ✨ I hope they'll keep making trains more accessible and you'll fulfill your dream soon!! ^^ 🚂🚃 I hope you'll have a wonderful time
I hope u can do it one day!
Your videos are so feel good type and it has such a cosy vibe, absolutely addicted to the train journey series 🔥
Thank you for visiting Australia, wow what an honour! I've done The Ghan trip from Adelaide to Alice Springs a few times as a child and didn't appreciate it nearly as much as I should have - especially the cost! I remember complaining about how slow the train was and we should have taken a plane because the outback was boring 🤦🏼♀️
Thank you for letting me see this through fresh eyes!
[Warning: Long comment/full-on review]
I've been on the Ghan myself, took the Gold Service back in the Australian Winter of 2018 and thankfully the only sort of 'jetlag' was a 30min difference between Victoria and South Australia. Your review recaptures every aspect I can remember (although it seems your specific train was maybe a hundred metres or so longer than mine, but even then it only takes about 3 carriages to bridge the difference) and is a whole wave of nostalgia such as the Queen Adelaide Restaurant and the Explorer Lounge, thanking you so much!
Unlimited drinks (albeit at the time I was a minor so lemonade was the pick, still tho, unlimited drinks. My aunt certainly enjoyed that! (she and her 2 kids paired with me and my parents on this journey)) and a dining menu that was to-die for. The first stop in Marla, I noticed you had to make your own barista; in my experience we got asked the previous night if we wanted to be served a drink upon wakeup. Of course, I said yes to a nice hot-choc to wake me up, before seeing that stunning sunrise with the egg and bacon rolls or cheesymite scrolls. I must HIGHLY recommend their dessert option of Wattle Ice Cream if it's ever available, to any of you taking the journey in the future.
The six of us took the full trip from Adelaide to Darwin, but in two separate journeys (we took a week or two, I can't remember exactly, in Alice Springs and the 'nearby' Yulara), but anyways that means I've got some things to add for the half post-Alice Springs.
The train stops quite a decent amount of time in Alice Springs (Population 26,5k) nestled in the MacDonnell Ranges, which does make sense as it would give the train time to stock up on resources for its guests, deal with any waste etc. in a city which is literally 1,500 from the nearest major coastal cities. If I remember correctly, travellers do have the option, if they take the full journey all in one, to have an off-train excursion in Alice Springs [further details required, I have no experience for that].
Departing Alice Springs, the Ghan continues to Katherine (Population 6,3k). Overnight, a HUGE environmental difference is visible, as the train passes through the Tropic of Capricorn. Desert-like, sparse outback one day, 'lush' (by Central Australian standards), green Eucalyptus shrublands the next. One will find it very difficult to miss the hundreds of termite mounds, up to 5m high each, sprawled across the landscape. Arriving in Katherine, the off-train excursion consists of a tour of the nearby Katherine Gorge on the Katherine River. (Haha, I wonder where we are with all these 'Katherine' places!) My group of six took the more standard land & water tour of the Gorge, however there was also the option for an aerial tour. The gorge was to explore, especially worth mentioning were the local fresh-water crocodiles lurking around in the region. A prime habitat for this smaller species, away from the larger, meaner salties at the coast.
The train leaves Katherine and arrives in Darwin the same day, late afternoon. A brilliant, iconic and unforgettable experience, which I would HIGHLY recommend to anyone who has the budget, my trip on the Ghan was a blast, and I definitely look forward to travelling on either it again, or it's other main counterpart the Indian-Pacific!
Jeez not wrong about how big it is
Sir this is the comment section, not a book section.
Thanks- very comprehensive and of much value to a potential customer like me.
Looked like another incredible experience - the sunrise stop looked very special
Probably my highlight of the trip - hard to get up but amazing to see :)
@@Trektrendy moments like that will stay with you forever - really enjoying watching your travels by train, would love to try one for myself . I never see kids on there are they mostly adults only or just not suitable for little ones?
@@relentlesspursuit6894 Children are always welcome but due to the length and cost of the journey you will rarely see Children on the train.
@@aussiejohn5835 interesting to know, thank you
So nice to travel vicariously through your terrific videos. Thanks for sharing your experiences with us.
We've watched all of your train trips. In addition to the all the fun and information you bring to your travel, we absolutely LOVE the transition placards with voice-over. And this vid's - AN ETERNITY LATER - is brilliant and will be said in our household for days to come.
You're so blessed to be able to enjoy this type of travel. Thanks for bringing us along🥰
I am obsessed with your videos! I appreciate the style and productionl!! Thank you for doing all you do to educate average folk on travel strategy!! Would love a video on how you film and produce behind the scenes! Fascinated with your skills! Also, what’s the thing about NASA? I’m guessing you used to work there?? A Q&A would be amazing!! Thanks and keep up the great content! PS thank you for selecting good companies to partner with also!! Not just out to make $$! You’re awesome!😊
Hey trek trendy amazing video as always just wanted to say we don’t get recognition much from other big RUclipsrs in our own back yard. Thank you so much hopefully other content creators will come to Australia visit our country what it has to offer 😁💯❤️
I have to say I love your adventures. I don’t think there is ANYONE who does travel vlogs better! Well done. 🍸👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
Brilliantly put together as usual. I remember doing that route as a backpacker 32 years ago with Bus Australia so your mode was a lot better!.
Good time to be in that part of the world before the real heat kicks in. Cheers again.
Hey! Just wanted to say thankyou so much for this video and your video about the Indian Pacific! I've just been hired by JB, and I'll be starting on the Ghan in just a couple weeks! Myself and a few others I've been training with have mentioned both videos, and how they've been really helpful in giving us an idea not only of what we're getting into, but what its like from the passengers perspective! I hope I can create amazing memories for passengers just like you experienced! 😊
Oh wow, what a fabulous journey. on such a gorgeous train. I have heard of this train and now after watching your video, will have to take the trip when we go to Oz. Can't wait!
Great comments, super views and sharing the sunrise was really a nice treat. Much aloha to you!

So pleased that you had the opportunity to board the Ghan! Love your videos and makes it even better seeing you film in SA ❤ From a fellow Adelaidian!
WOW - what an adventure in scenery and luxury! Thank you for taking us along.
Have been waiting for this vid and it does not disappoint! Thank you so much Will for letting us tag along. Nice touch with Millie inserted, am sure you missed her. Hope you got a jar of vegemite to take home. Bravo on another excellent video. 👌🏼🇦🇺
6000 is insane, it’s cool but that’s more than my whole trip
5:19 "not for the introverts" that part hits me hard
Your trips are so relaxing. After watching your videos I felt that I was with you and my stress lessened.
I really love these sleeper train vids. If I had the money I think this is the type of trip I'd love to take. I've always loved traveling by train and there's just a romantic feel to traveling old school like this as opposed to a plane.
Hey mate. So glad that you’ve enjoyed your time in Australia. Am curious if you are going to ‘trek trendy’ out of planes and train and maybe review some cruise liners or hotels? Maybe even holiday in different places around the world and review what is on offer? I really do enjoy watching every videos you release. Keep up the great work mate 😊
Always love watching your adventures.
Feels like you're there.
I have been ill for a while now and unable to really go anywhere for any extended period of time. I recently discovered your channel and it has taken me back to my good ol' travelling days. I am enjoying each adventure as if I were there with you. I do appreciate you adding some pizazz to my otherwise drab day. Gives me something akin to a " caffeine boost". Thank you.
Will, I have commented on numerous excursions by train and air. I really appreciate your insight on something that I would otherwise never have an opportunity to see. I do wish you and your girlfriend a long and healthy life to continue to bring us who cannot see the wonders that you experience. Thank you and safe journey's. Jim from Cincinnati Ohio USA
Ive done the full journey in gold twin and it was one of the best experiences ever. We did camel riding in Alice Springs and the town of Katherine is just gorgeous. Although it's expensive, I say it's worth it to do once. I hope you return to do the full trip!
In 2018, I took the Ghan to Darwin. I was in a gold twin and the lounge and diner were lovely. The train ended up being 11 hours late due to heavy rains, swollen rivers, and compromised bridges. Also, on the final day my foot swelled up and the staff was so nice to let me keep my bed set up so I could recline my leg. It was a great trip.
Australia is a terrifying place
Australia is beautiful 😍 wish I could return but health forbids.
@@aaroncousins4750 good, keeps you out
@@dantemadden1533 yeah, almost as good as how we kept your ancestors in
Winning formula, he keeps it moving with enough detail, and a sprinkling of humor. Great job!
I used to work at the terminal warehouse there!
Topping up The Ghan, Indian Pacific etc as they came in with linen, food, drink etc.
Never had the luxury of a trip on one, though.
Seeing all the food we stocked and moved would have also suggested a damn delicious menu 👌
I’ve travelled on this train twice in 1986 and 2001 - always wanted to see First Class!
Lovely! Expensive!
8 years without rain ☔
He likes Diet Coke
As an Aussie I’ve always wanted to try this I hope you had a fantastic time ❤
This is amazing to watch! I travelled on the Ghan from Alice Springs to Adelaide many years ago but I was in the poor section i.e. sleeping upright in your seats and getting sandwiches for dinner. Thankyou for sharing the amazing luxuries also on offer!
My parents did the other Ghan trip (the Ghan Explorer) and just like you they did Platinum Class and loved it. Thanks for another great video Will!
Thanks will, just what I needed before starting a week of hard work !!! Keep up the good work mate !! 🎉
Thanks for watching Felix. All the best for next week my friend :)
Love your videos!! Please tell me ( I guess I missed it the first time around), what is your connection with NASA? Your adventures are the best. I am elderly and disabled and my traveling days are over but sharing your adventures is just like being there without all the “hassles “ that go with traveling!!! Keep up the good work and thank you so much for the excellent job you do!!!
I love how you give the history and background of the trains
I have watched other clips re this trip, but yours is the most enjoyable and informative, thank you for sharing.
I went on the Ghan a couple of years ago and stayed in a gold double room. The difference between gold and platinum is basically only in the bedroom. The food and the lounge is basically the same regardless of level from what I can see. I can't eat gluten and don't eat meat. The chef was fantastic and prepared a fantastic gluten free vegetarian meal for me.
I've done both, Gold and Platinum, on IP Sydney-to-Adelaide and back in order to judge the difference and draw a definitive conclusion to apply to my more extensive triangle trip Adelaide-to-Perth on IP and Darwin-to-Adelaide on Ghan the following year. The key differences are: there are fewer people in Platinum, and they are on average ten years older. Reasons why people ten years younger pick Gold are: a) they can cope with bunk beds, and b) it's cheaper.
If the bunk bed/mobility consideration doesn't faze you, or if you are travelling alone as I was, then pick Gold as there are a wider range of people to mix with , and they are ten years less stuck in their pet discussions. In other words, the conversations are better in Gold.
After making the comparative test trips, both of which had my seats facing towards the back of the train, against the direction of travel (always a 50% chance), my choice for the ultimate triangle, both legs, was Gold Superior, because I knew I wouldn't get penalized traveling 'backwards' and I got an in-cabin bar fridge, which suited my desire for anonymity. I could, and did dance in my cabin (in secret) and was still necking a stubby - with a thirsty guest - on the final arrival, 90 minutes after the bar had closed.
POSTSCRIPT: I forgot to mention that the Platinum beds align with the spine of the train and therefore rock less than the transverse layout of the Gold beds. The Gold Superior bed is also orthogonal to the rails but the cabin, being located in the centre of the carriage, suffers so much the less from rocking, and also less bogie clatter.
If you're still in Australia, you need to do the Overland which runs from Adelaide to melbourne, and also the XPT from Melbourne to Sydney, or Sydney to Brisbane, which are basically the Australian version of the British HST train. If you travel in Queensland, there's several regional long distance trains to travel on, however the only sleeper train is the Spirit of the Outback, the others mainly use seats.
Was really fun to see the outback scenery. Thanks for sharing!
I love seeing you do stuff in my home country love from Western Australia Keep up the good work mate!
GOO WILL !!
Aussies pronounce it as "G-anne". A wonderful experience which we did years ago (not first class though) and thoroughly enjoyed. Great video, thank you.
Yeah nah we don’t
If you can say Afghanistan with a short "a", then you can say Gan. That's the etymology, that's the pronounciation.
Melbourne bloke here. My Dad found a railway peg/steel from the old Ghan track back in the 1980's, whilst on an epic trip with his mate from Melbourne to Alice Spring with the Morris Minor Touring Club. He still has it. It's as close to riding the Ghan anyone in my family ever got.
I really enjoy watching you. I have 3 of you I like to watch for different reasons. All of you give me different aspects of train travel, though your air travel is fun as well. Keep posting, and happy travels.
I’ve always wondered what your affiliation with NASA is?
He bought it at koti in Hyderabad
His birds a rocket
Possibly a final goal to travel in NASA spaceship?! 🤷

One of the most famous trains in the world… very nice.
I do enjoy your work. And your attitude. You are honest to a fault. So am I. I don’t comment often. I am an older person. Alone. And your stuff is very entertaining and informative. Thank you.
I love watching your videos because It gives me the opportunity to live vicariously through you. Loved it!
I have to say it....because it really grates.....it is Gan....said like you'd say can......it is short for Afghan and named for the cameleers who first brought camels to the Australian outback and made travel and transport through the desert possible. Apart from that, great vid. Its a trip Id love to do one day....maybe one day I will win lotto.
You would think someone who spent 24 hours as a passenger on the train would know how to pronounce the name properly, right.
Your voice is very calming and I appreciate the attitude to the trip not sounding big headed of yourself for affording it and being a genuine tour of a luxury experience, thank you for the tour Sir and I'll give you a sub to see more in the near future :)
Very nice. Thank you. (The venue, presentation, narration, and editing are truly superb.)
Love the videos. For those of us who will never get to see these parts of the world, it is magnificent!
Do these train rooms have televisions?
The shot of you standing in silhouette against the sunrise is stunning, a really inspiring image. Brilliant work as always Will I think I've watched you eat more chocolate puddings than you can shake a stick at!😉
It's amazing journey : you always mentioned every details of your traveling very well
Just wanna say... SHOW US MORE TRAINS!!! Congrats on the channel, looking forward for your next clip!
Awesome looking train trip. If they had any open air cars they could’ve promoted them as “Ghan with the wind”.
Love this 😂
"Ghan With the Wind". Love it. Someone with nous at Journeys Beyond Rail Expeditions should pick up on this.
Great video! Although I can’t resist letting you know that it’s Ghan like can, not Ghan like Khan. ☺️ it’s because it’s short for Afghan, because the Afghan explorers established the route across the desert
Seconding on the name, Gan rather than Gaaaaaaaan
Incredible! The part with the sun coming up 💙Id give anything to see that!
Love seeing this sort of content in (my home) Australia! Love the commentary and keep up the great work!
Another great video I think the Australians call It the Gaan not the Ghan. Paul from Bournemouth

No other words to say then to I just love dis journey in its visuals , it's awesome ❤️❤️
You need to do a video about your journey home after you arrive at your destination! Just came across your channel and love all of your videos. Keep up the good work 👏 👍🏻
A bit of context: In China there's a bunch of long distance sleeper trains that cover thousands of kilometres, both high speed (overnight) and regular (upward of 50 hours) that operate daily at affordable prices. Myself, I once took a 59-hour sleeper train from Changchun to Kunming: it's well over 3000 km in 16 carriages or so. And these are all actual trains for regular people to use, not some "experiential" touristy service.
Context as you say is important. The length of this train as explained in the video refers to the length of the rolling stock not the distance travelled 😉
We managed to travel on both the Ghan and Indian Pacific before Covid hit and would definitely recommend both of them. We spent 3 months travelling around the Southern Pacific area.
Loved it WIll thanks for taking us along!!!!!

Long time subscriber / watcher x thanks heaps for coming to Australia as always love the videos keep up the great content and speak soon. 😀
Great video. The Ghan looks like a bucket list experience!
One small comment, rather than say 4 seater lunches with other passengers 'is not for the introverts', I think it would be more accurate to say it is not for shy people. Being an introvert doesn't mean ppl struggle to meet ppl or don't do well in social situations. That's about shyness, anxiety, and other aspects of personality
What an incredible journey and an amazing on board experience and product.
You made me put train traveling in my future. Thanks for your videos
