Amazing how/what the human mind can create ! Made in the image of God for sure! Two minds better than one! You two are awesome!
the previous suggestion to drill in to old slab to lock in rebar for new slab is also common practice to keep slabs from shifting or separating (ck out online they use an adhesive to lock in rebar pieces)
Al, great show like always. I just wanted to give you a suggestion after watching you spray paint your line for your drain you were digging towards the line and covering it. If you started just like you did but pulled the dirt towards you as you went you would never cover up your line.
He's fallen in love with the spray paint, it's a wonder he didn't use it on the floor grate 🤣🤣
I love how the two of you work together. My husband and I are the same way. Team work makes the dream work!!
Hard working couple and loving every minute. 👍🏻❤️
Good morning Lumnah family …..Love the progress hope all falls into place…. Have a good weekend ….God bless 🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽
Put the grate to the outside edge so you can flush the concrete recess out with water. Then a mat between the grate and the door.
Too smart for Al
AL YOU AND GINA HAVE TO BE SO PROUD OF WHAT YOU DO THANKS FOR THE VIDEOS NEVER MISS HAVE A GOOD DAY
Yes, they should be proud. And, I like the way you used the word, "proud". It annoys me when people who are not closely associated with someone say they are proud of a person. In my opinion it's arrogant, because it comes accross as superior and condescending. For instance, I cannot take pride in someone else if I had nothing to do with them, i.e. I can't be prideful if someone else does something great. It's like taking undeserved credit. ~~~~~ Anyway, that's my rant, and I'm proud of myself for putting it out there (hahahaha).
I so enjoy watching you and Gina working together.. GREAT JOB ..GOD BLESS
Love watching your build. One of my favorites. You are so talented in your skills. Great teacher. God bless
Ok Al, watching y'all tie wire, I've come to the conclusion, that it's time you bought Gina, her very own screwgun! Kinda win-win, Gina gets her own, and you get to buy a new tool. Loving the progress!
Hi from Richmond BC Canada! It has been a please Al watching you and your family building a wonderful stead. You have been very inspiring to me as I build my small projects. Somehow When I am about to stop a little short on something, some thing in my mind says? keep going Al would have! Take care and keep up the awesome projects!
Concrete is delivered in the afternoon to smaller users. Major contractors with union help get 1st deliveries of the day....so the crew can finish on time and go home. Small users can work until midnight or later. That is just the way it is. So you will always be the lesser of the days concrete batches schedule.
Concrete companies are thieving lying prics
I am with you Al! Things not being even or symmetrical drives me crazy! Everything looks great. I love the metal grate in front of the door idea.
Good morning from Waxhaw, NC where we are at 64 degrees and the leaves are just starting to turn. You are one very busy man. I like how you improvised and made a tool to twist wire to secure your Rebar. (Necessity being the mother of invention - I wonder if that idea has already been patented? If not, you have have an invention on your hands. I'm OCD - it can be good at times and at other times drive everyone nuts. I see nothing wrong with "perfection". If I were you, I'd put a drain line in the "dirt pit" as PW suggested below, otherwise it's going to be a headache later on. Love your channel. God bless you all.
Looks amazing! So happy! For you and Gina!
Wow thats a lot bigger space than I thought it was going to be. Awesome.
Bandsaw… I told you! I was 45 before buying mine and said out loud, why have I been messing around with angle grinders and hack saws… this is so much better l! 😂
You upload the videos like a Swiss Clock 🥇🥇🥇
And there is nothing like your smiles and good mornings
Continue to be who you are and good luck in all things 💗💗💗
Love how builder Kens Karpentry speeds up his videos so it won’t bore ppl with all the little step by steps! Thanks for recommending
GM Family. Everything is looking good can't wait until you start framing the house. Ken kartentry The garage turned into a house looks great you both do fantastic work great channel. Until next week. God Bless stay safe and well. 🙂🐶🐕🐈🐖🐐🐀🐣🐓🌻
100% with you on cutting the grate.
If you haven't poured your concrete skirt yet, I would like to make two recommendations. First, move your grate platform to the outer edge of your form. This will provide room to have an exterior grade carpet between the grate and your threshold. Second, put a very large pipe such as a 4 or 6 inch pipe in the grate floor bottom. Give your self a simple washout or snow/ice melt area. Finally, I would recommend still doing your radiant floor heating in the porch area just to have option for future.
That's 3 recommendations 🤣🤣
@@colinstace1758 Good point. 👍

That's will be so nice! See you on Tuesday! GOD BLESS!
al and gina , your work ethic and fearless thirst for knowledge and willingness to try pretty much everything you can on this project is inspiring and educational. god bless, better than most shows on cable tv , real people, no scripts or fake banter, love it and you guys, stay humble
this year is suppose to be a bad winter. keeping it dutch is building also. good work young people. be bless. savannah tn.
Hi there John dearden UK viewer,
You two guys work well together, which is so nice to see most people today just get in contractors and you don't learn anything,
Plus it costs a fortune well done keep up the good work 👍👍
Contractors are quick and knowledgeable, avoid costly mistakes down the track, do what you feel comfortable with and sub the rest out. 👍
Getting close, can’t hardly wait for the build to begin! Awesome 😎
Al you need to drill into the existing slab to tie them in to avoid shifting of the slabs
Al will do it his way, save your breath. LOL
@@jimputnam2044 yes watched that also , drill ,epoxy and then tie to the starters again with the appropriate lap, could also bend an L on them for tie in and clearance from the edge of the slab with the reo bars some look like they are touching concrete cancer in the making also the lap of the bars a bit short did suggest to him min 40 diam usual trade practice BUT Al does it his way ,one day hopefully will learn to tie every cross of the reo bars
@@talleyrand2739 The ends of the bars are touching the form. If you pour and the end is to close to outside of concrete it will rust, leaves a stain and lets in water around the exposed end. Al does not learn well he was there for the pour with Ken. Did not pay close attention I quess. Hope it turns out ok for them.
Al, it's not just an OCD thing...I'd have had to trim that grate back too (and I don't have OCD). Symmetry is part of what makes something beautiful, except in the case of displays like flowers, art objects, etc., in which case odd numbers of things look better. I love your attention to details like that. ❤️
I never get tired of watching your vlogs! 💜
Looking forward to the build with Ken. I’ve followed him on RUclips and he’s a very knowledgeable carpenter. It will certainly help you get it built and dried in before snow. Stay safe
I'm following your channel now because of kens channel. Like what your doing. I'm going to start at the begging and watch till present nice job..
I'm still chuckling over the drill tying the tie rods 😁😁
Why? It worked!
Love y’all’s work ethic and the fact we can rely on your videos being up on time every time!! Some RUclipsrs are getting so random and far between I have lost interest in watching!
Great job 😀
I learn so much from you, thanks for sharing your build!
You're not alone Al, that grate would have infuriated me too!*! 💗
Add calcium carbonate to the concrete mix to speed the curing in colder weather. Love the on-the-fly engineering!
"Many of the problems with cold weather can be overcome by the ready mix producer. Here are a few things to keep in mind:
Hot water-Your ready mixed concrete producer will usually have, and use, hot water in the concrete when the weather turns cold. Most producers will try to have the concrete be at least 65°F when it leaves the plant, which is generally good enough depending on air temperature and thickness of the concrete element.
Specify the slump at less than 4 inches and use air entrained concrete to reduce bleeding.
Accelerators-Since colder weather leads to colder concrete, the set time can be delayed. Accelerators added to the concrete can keep it on schedule. Addition of 2% (by weight of cement) of calcium chloride is the traditional way to accelerate the hydration reaction-it is very effective and reasonably cheap. But-a big but-that much chloride can lead to corrosion of any steel embedded in the concrete (like rebar) and it can lead to a mottled surface appearance with colored concrete (see Concrete Discoloration).
Nonchloride accelerators are widely available and are very effective. They won't discolor the concrete but they are a bit expensive. Don't make the mistake of thinking that accelerators are anti-freeze agents-they are not, they simply increase the rate of the hydration reaction.
Fly ash-You should typically stay away from using fly ash or slag cement in cold weather, since those materials set up more slowly and generate less internal heat; slag can cause the same effect.
To make the reaction a bit hotter, the ready mix producer can add some extra cement (typically an extra 100 pounds per cubic yard) or can use Type III (high-early strength) cement, which hydrates more rapidly.
Be careful with water reducers in cold weather, since they can slow the set time. Besides, you seldom need water reduction with cooler concrete since the cooler temperatures prevent slump loss.
For admixtures added at the job site, don't use them if they have frozen. The chemicals may have separated."
@@colinstace1758 - Thanks Colin. Interesting stuff!
The metal grate is a super idea, the only thing I would rather have had it made of aluminum. They do have material that would work for your needs made of Al, maybe a little more costly but rust wouldn't be a problem, at least that red rust. I know, it's a little late now. What does that make me, a troll? I love to see Gina and you working together.
Your concrete for upper states for colder weather pours has what they call hot concrete a added chemical that aides in the drying process it costs more but the results are a quicker cure rate. Check it out with your concrete company. I know here in Michigan they do that in roads and in homes in late fall weather.
Great work today!! Hope tiny house door is wide enough to bring bigger items in and out. Stay blessed Lumnahs great job!!
Don't forget there is going to be a garage door in the next room (kitchen) - at least that's how I understand the plans... that ought to allow anything big to get into the house.
I do not know if you did this in an upcoming video, but I would have drilled holes in the first slab you poured and put in pieces of rebar to tie in the slabs, less chance that they will crack or one slab will settle unevenly.
Excellent video as always ! You guys are so nice to share your videos with us. They are a lot of hard work! Thank you and God bless you and your family
Good mauhnin Lumnah acres and friends! Hope everyone has an enjoyable weekend!
Howdy Elizabeth - wishing you and yours an enjoyable blessed weekend as well!
Ditto to what Sam said! Love your phonetically spelled "morning" that Al says. 🍃🍁🍂
Al, just a thought in relation to a possible problem in the future. Your grid for scraping off dirt etc. from your boots, there is a possibility that when it rains, the pit underneath may fill with water. Why not lay a piece of pipe from the pit, under the concrete and just out, so that any water can just run out of the pit. Also, if you ever want to wash it out from debris accumulated in the pit, you can just hose it out and all the water and debris will just run out of the pipe.
The smell also .
Capital idea. By the time this is read, the concrete has probably already been poured...
My thought exactly.
I think the area is small enough so as not to become a problem, once in a blue moon, simply shovel out the debris & wipe it clean with some damp cloth rags, drop the grid back in place, done...Another unknown at the moment is whether or not the doorway gets an overhang...
Bill on the Hill... :~)
Put a rubber mat under the grate. Just need to pull the mat out, with dirt on, to clean.
Morning everyone!
Gooooood Morning
Howdy Frances!
You all are Amazing, thank you for sharing your adventures with us and God Bless you and your family, your daughter is so lucky to have you both and the experience of the building of you homesteading life 😊 have a Beautiful Weekend my friends

Fantastic work both of you I love your videos thank you. Australia xxx God bless
Gooood afternoon from central Florida! Hope everyone has a great day!
Howdy David - U2!
This additional space for the tiny house will be well used! When I initially saw it, I thought it was a junior version of Gina's wrap around deck. Blessings to all.
Excellent Al, looking good.👍👍👍
cool weather is great to pour concrete. just don't get below freezing. pour around 40 degrees and rising. it has time to start setting and generate its own heat. we would then cover with tarps and several inches of sand. this will provide insulation to hold the heat in to prevent freezing.
Everything is looking good. I look forward to starting the tiny house. I like that you are OCD just like me. See you next time.
Adapt and over come great to see some Ingenuity on the wire twists 👍🏻
That bandsaw was money well spent.
Be careful of your wrist when you bang things with your fist. Knew a guy who worked in a tire shop and always banged on the hub caps(when they still had hub caps!) with his fist and one day his wrist bone broke! Had a cast for 8 weeks! That's why they make hammers! Take care of yourself, you are only one man doing this build(primarily)! God Bless!
Good idea! Reminds me how when I was a kid, I used my teeth to strip insulation from thin wires. NOT a good idea!
And please wear steel toed boots...

Hi Al & Gina from Cairns Queensland Australia. Just pickup on your channel. I'm enjoying you posts and learning the big differences in construction, from the Sub tropics where I live and the
cold climate you live in. Keep up the good work and Take care. Phill
Oh Gina! I do envy your strong, working knees!! Mine used to work as good, but alas old age has made them pretty useless in doing the squats that you seem to do so easily. Oh, those were the days! Looking good you guys!! ❤️👍
They say its better for it going slower it cures better and stronger.. Love and light 🙏💕👍
But not too cold or it won't set right
Al, Gina, You're ripping through the work! Have you got a soakaway at the threshold? That will stop your bootscraper being a permanent puddle. Autumn in my part of Scotland is always a damp affair. Not much of a drying climate at all down by the river, too! 1340 here, 12°C and dull as ditch water. Look forward to the next concrete pour. Regards Stephen.
Good stuff Al & Gina... I liked Gina's wire tying method better! Nice to see you figured out getting square cuts on the schedule 40 too...The adj. drain vents are slick... You picked the perfect crew on the collaborative upcoming YT & I also noticed you have followed Ken's 24" staggering on the rebar & doubling up the outers, well done...

Amazes me how you two can get so much done in one day. I'm with you Al on the uneven ends - would drive me insane too. I'm one of those people who can't stand if a picture is not straight and feel compelled to fix it.
Monk show!
@@StoneKathryn - sorry but I don't know what you mean by that comment. Can you explain?
@@ruthanderson1758 There was a tv show called "Monk" starring Tony Shalob as an Obsessive Compulsive Detective. It was very funny to me. He couldn't relax until the pictures were straight etc. It got him in trouble with people but it helped him solve the case also.
@@ruthanderson1758 I think a lot of people are labeled OCD or PERFECTIONIST! My father wanted everything done with perfection, I was proud of that trait! Yep, I like things done with perfection, too! My daughter turns her coffee pot to the exact position she likes, even if it's only 1/4"!!
Loved it when Gina told Al that his organization skills were lacking. Sounds like what my wife tells me all the time too. She is so organized it scares me. If I misplace something I ask her if she has seen it and then next thing I know she will find it. I'm good at repairing most everything from figuring it out and then fixing it and putting it back together again. She likes that part about me and it's saved us a lot of money. The problem is I have a hard time getting rid of anything because I can always think of what I could use it for on a future project. Life is just so interesting. Gina I really respect you for the person you are and I'm sure you are the glue that keeps everything together and flowing smoothly. Best to both you, Al and your daughter. May God bless you and keep you always.
You ever consider getting/making a couple sets of saw horses? A lot easier than working on the ground all the time.

Glad to see you didn't have to undo anything you'd done completely to make these changes.
Watch a bunch of homesteaders channels and nothing is sadder than watching folks redo something. Its quite common and I always feel bad for the wasted days and energy they spend constantly redoing something that used to be good enough. For example, watching Red Poppy Ranch tear off his roof and redo the entire thing.
Something to be said for doing stuff the right way thr first time. Homesteaders always trying to save money and working themselves half to death to do it.
Love your approach Al, let's handle this NOW before I have to tear anything up
I'm not certain Al really does do it right the first time. I don't think that grate without a drain is doing it right.
Great add on and doing it before the little house is built was a seamless way to do it. I am guessing your pex will make its way into your little house somewhere to be joined up with the other pex lines.....
You guys both work very hard but do it together, that’s nice…
Need a tray that will slide under the grate to slide out to clean under the grate it would catch the dirt and other debris, but if the grate lifts out easily and doesn't get stuck or frozen that will work too. Supplies are hard to get everywhere, 😥
Hope the weather holds out for you!
