I live in Alaska and hall my own water, had to pull my water tank the other day and it still had a little water in it and it froze, so when I tried to put the tank back in the truck it was to heavy for me to do it myself. I was about to give up and wait for my son to get home from school and thought "What would Al do", he always figures something out when he has a problem. I thought ratchet straps, he always has a way to use his ratchet straps to help out. I wrapped my ratchet strap around the tank and was able to ratchet it up high enough to lift it in the back of the truck myself!
Thanks for helping me think out of the box and to never give up, there is always a way, thanks!

I planted my garlic yesterday. Every year I double up how much I plant. Still have room to do more doubling up. Don't forget to fence this area in as moose and deer will eat the sprouted garlic. I have raised beds with a chicken wire fencing around it. 10 X 16 feet. Not wide enough for a deer to jump in then get out. Deer don't perceive distance well when they see two fences.
Things are moving along well for the new property build.

It will help some with preventing wash out and just be nice to enclose it. Plus with your equipment, you can move them later if you don't continue to use it for a raised bed.

what a satisfying posting! The story telling was great, and it all flowed so very well.
I had wondered about everything from the pigs to the livestock trailer, to the floor joists. You answered all those and at the same time gave us a sneak peak at the timeline that you are working with. I think we all are going to be very surprised as to how well this has been planned and how it will all fall together.
I learned about garlic today, I did not know it took that long to grow. We use it but never paid any attention. Just another example of how much planning has to go into your world. And all on top of building the ogp up.
You two are making and building a dream. Bless you !
I will be right here eagerly looking over your shoulder.

Greetings, we used to own a hog farm in the eighties and early nineties. We always used a local company to process our hogs. My wife and I had full time jobs in addition to the farm, so time was precious. On average about one hog every six months for our use. We also sold hogs to local customers and most times we would take them to the processor for our customers. All they had to do was provide a cut schedule to the processor, and then pick up the meat. We had one customer that always had the whole hog processed into sausage. Now you can officially call the OGP a farm with the addition of the first garden. We are looking forward to the build, it is going to be fun watching both channels and seeing the different perspectives. Thank you for sharing with us.

Some that he picked and sold was in beds but the healthy “seed garlic”ran wild

On the new garlic bed. What about taking some of the scrap wood you used for your concrete forms and make a U shaped border leaving it open on the side the water will be coming in. Less chance of it washing away while still getting the water coming in unimpeded.

Gooooood Morning Al , Gina & Olivia ,
Great long distance views from the garlic patch. Do you identify where you have planted each garlic variety ? That way you will know which varieties you are harvesting. Or do you prefer to take pot luck ? I know that moose are water plant eaters as well as browsers. I wonder if the moose will be attracted by the hay ? Oh well , I suppose that you will find out soon enough. Al , you said that the 2nd cutting hay did not have hay seeds or at least not many. So the hay may not attract the wild turkeys. For the wild turkeys I would select a few good Oak trees not far from the main homestead and manage them for good acorn production for the turkeys. Your forest has a lot of small growth. It needs to be thinned out for better tree growth. The three of you are going to be quite busy for the next 3 or 4 decades !
I expect that it feels good to finally have some actual building materials on site. Well , carry on from Ohio. I'm watching with some eagerness.

Al, Gina, Whirlwind of activity going on. Made me think I should try garlic again. Not very productive last year. We'll see. Over the past three years we have planted in different places on the allotment, with varying results, as we recover the ground. It has rained so hard over the last few days here in the Scottish Borders that we've had a flood warning. Just ended. The river Tweed is about 100 yards away from our front door. Didn't come calling, thank goodness! Take care. Regards Stephen.

Garlic is planted in hills and needs to grow roots to hold in hills so when ground freezes and thaws roots will hold in ground, otherwise they will actually pop out of ground. We drip Irragation to get garlic rooted. My brother uses a holler to create for garlic.

On my tremor like that I used steel cable about the same size diameter of your weed wacker string and then you don't ever have to change it out I've used mine for 4 or 5 years now

One man, one woman and a wilderness. Add some straight lines, pounds of garlic- then race the winter snows. Kind of a soap opera adventure channel.

I can give you some farming advice, check out the Charles Dowding and Dutch Farmer canals. It demonstrates that it is not necessary to dig. The secret is in the manure.

Good blessed morning everyone! The three kids are growing fast. Kamo is really big. Al, will the lumber company be back once the ground freezes? It sounds like you might have a buyer for the old farm. That would be wonderful!

I love mornings on the homestead with Figuro overseeing the rations going in for Hope, & the ladies are making sure you don't forget them. So funny. Garlic bed will do well in that spot. I'll miss the pigs too, but someone has to bring home the bacon. hehe Have a nice day Lumnah Family!

Getting the plastic cord out of the edger. Heat a pin, while hot push it in the end you are trying to pull. Let it cool. The pin should be tight with the cord now, pull you should be able to get it out.

It will be interesting to see what animals come to enjoy the hay. Maybe a wildlife cam could be set up to capture some Moose or Deer chowing down.

Jim, Moose and Deer much like the goats are browsers, they like twigs, young branches and brush to munch on ! This is why young fruit trees have to be protected from them.

Hello Al &Gina, I have so enjoyed watching the new property begin to begin. You should be proud of everything you and your family have accomplished in so short a time. You are following the example of the father of our country General George Washington as he would rather be at his farm then anything else. Keep working hard as the result is worth the hard work.
    Best Regards
