Absolutely. He does not quite have the mindset for Muay Thai, although he certainly has the physical skill, because traditional Muay Thai has a weird scoring system. Gonsalves has incredible agility, and you can see he would be good at grappling. MMA has very straightforward scoring system so it's much easier to understand how to win.

This was tremendous! Gonzalves is a testament to the Thai training. I think he shocked Rod Tang with his mastery of the techniques that usually HE is using on his opponents. What a great back and forth and a real show of leveling up by Gonzales.

@@thatdude3977 He was running a LOT. It's obvious he pretty much never went forward. Rodtang complained about it so often the ref wanted to yellow card Rodtang for delay by complaining. Even commentators mentioned it. You can retreat in Muay Thai but it's seen as cowardly unless you actively counterstrike which Gonsalves did not do that much. Someone like Saenchai often retreats but evades and counters much better than Gonsalves. Gonsalves is extremely good and did land a lot of strike but you can't just run away like he did the ENTIRE fight. Muay Thai has weird rules about aggression (basically moving forward), retreating but counterattacking, and overall domination. It's not just strike count that matters in scoring. Most people don't understand the Muay Thai scoring system. You also get extra if you sweep from a clinch which is one reason Muay Thai fighters do that as well as just embarrassing the opponent and potentially causing a bit of hurt on a big fall. There's no way you can win by retreating unless you land an overwhelming amount of strikes because you lose points by not being aggressive and by not dominating.
@@oldtyger agreed with you... Gonzalves hit and run... not true fighter...but kinda good in getting point...hit then grapple (juijitsu maybe?) and slam Rtang using non kickboxing n muai thai stail...

Rodtang gets mad because his opponent makes him miss and complains to the referee. You can’t choose the style of your opponent. You just impose your own style. If your footwork is not enough to corner your opponent then you need to work on your own footwork. 15:39
My question is what happens if rodtang would choose to stand still. Would it still just be on rodtang to engage?

Why didn't the ref count any of those early knockdowns (Rodtang knocking down Goncalves)?
Those were not considered knockdowns. More of a slip. I guess the call could be a bit iffy but I agreed with the ref on those. Gonsalves got up right away without any delay so those did not SEEM like significant blows. It's another thing when a guy gets hit, falls down, and then is visibly shaken and wobbling a bit. Gonsalves is extremely evasive, great movement.

@@haytamdami1565 No it's called running away. The commentators even mentioned it. They also mentioned not playing Rodtang's game so Gonsalves was smart to not go forward and engage in a brawl with a guy they call The Iron Man, but he needed to counterstrike more. Instead he ran away the entire fight and did not effectively demonstrate counterstriking which would count against him in traditional Muay Thai scoring. Not all great Muay Thai fighters move forward like Rodtang. Many of them are effective counterstrikers which is the type of game most people would need to play against Rodtang. Few fighters have that stamina and ability to take blows like Rodtang.

Some of that bobbing put Goncalves in dangerous positions, there are safer defenses in the context of Muay Thai

Rodtang complains i think cause you are suposed to throw without lifting , and Goncalvez did , dunno if on purpose but paying attention u can see Gonz has his arms under the armpits of Rodtang and prior to the throw he lifts him up a little givim him and enormous advantage , you are supoosed to throw making summit ,, i´ll explain , ur suposed to throw downwards , pusing dow your oponent and throw overpowering ur opponent. Dunno if they play by Muay Thai rules , if not , well .. Rodtang will be misplaced in his reclamation. Hope i make myself clearish enoguh , im spanish so atill strugling in english .

It looks like a close fight, but on the score cards it’s probably very much in rodtangs favour. Aggression is a massive part of scoring in Muay Thai, and I assume this contest falls under those rules. If you back up all fight, you’ll probably lose on the scorecards.

Rodtang weakness is outside leg kicks and grappling , he suckers fighters into going toe to toe and they seem to fall for it everytime . I'm a rodtang fan but conclaves exposed his weaknesses... You never go toe to toe with rodtang 😂

Lethwei is not a pillow fight so you won't last long in the ring if you fight like Rodtang.
I do agree to some extent, but I am not a fan of their fighting rules. It's shameful that skilled fighters have to rely on dropping to the ground to defend themselves from an attack.

Muay Thai use big pillow- gloves and they are afraid of head strike. Letweit is a man to man fight without spongey gloves and head strike is only meant for manly not for girly you muay thai.

That ref is either crooked or is just bad at his job. Dude pick rodtang up and slammed him twice, but no warnings or point deductions. Not to mention the consistent leg tackle attempts. Someone forgot to tell him this isn’t mma.

@@mattwoo556 Superlek won Panpayak last time, which has been their only bout under ONE. Superlek is better than Rodtang, Superlek also has one of the best defence in ONE. Panpayak is easily better than Rodtang aswell.
Superlek and Panpayak are 3-4 and one Draw. Panpayak has one more win over him.
