It s the first of the kind I see and I like it but I m a little bit confused when it comes to the rules : like why did the referee broke the clinch several times ? I was even wondering if they were allowed to actually go to the ground... Good fight overall ,just a bit confusing for me. If anyone can explain ?
The fact Rodtang didn't tap just shows how much of an animal he is, mad respect for both fighters two of the greatest in their own fields. Congratd to DJ for the win
It has more to do with traditional Thai fighting values. Very proud and respectful fighters over there. If you’ve ever practiced Thai you will have learnt different dances that you do for the Buddha, it is a culture sport unlike other combat soorts
It’s so crazy that One is really out here bringing back the cross-style mainstream fights. DJ and Rodtang get mad props for going in on this as well; the sportsmanship here is awesome.
Cross style? Bringing it back from where? We had nhb, then mma, not style vs style. We stopped seeing 'cross style' because the fighters realized they had to learn more skills to compete in nhb / mma. Onefc just forced rodtang to fight at a massive disadvantage, particularly as the level of grappling and striking in mma has risen tremendously as people figured out how to better mix different disciplines for the cage, while muay thai is still just muay thai.

If it was a street fight to the death, Rodtang would be dead. You can have all the willpower you want, MMA techniques win over thai fighting principles. Round one was insane though, a handicap fight for DJ.
@@umad7796 I wouldn’t be so sure about that, the best(worst) type of fighters you can face in the streets are strikers, especially boxers. Because you can have takedowns or any other technique from MMA overall, but strikers need just one good strike to land and you are put to sleep before you even reach out for that takedowns or any other grappling combo. I see your POV but no one would use takedowns in the street fight at first, hands are faster and more powerful... I’m not saying Demetrious would get beat up but it’s not one sided as you trying to prove 😀 Street fights are dirty and fast, so whoever is faster, wins 🙂 PS: No trying to prove you wrong or hate at all, just wanted to put some facts over there, all the people bragging about MMA fighters in the street fights have never been into one and it shows when they trying to tell you strikers wouldn’t stand a chance to MMA fighters.
@@LuanPrates If you would read it properly, you would realize that I was talking about differences between strikers and MMA fighters. Of course that street fight could go either way, because in the streets there are no rules, so the more dirty you are, the better for you. So yep, you are totally right that whatever you can grab that will help you, can easily decide which way the fight goes. And we are not gonna talk about the guns that are in the streets in US on daily basis too. So once again, I was replying to the guy who said that MMA fighters would smash stand up strikers, which is just not true.. So stop being a toxic hater, we are probably on the same side in this case..🙂 PS: I still think that good striker would put you to sleep before you would even reach for that pipe and rock, you don’t have that much time as you think to do all of that, most of the street fights are matter of seconds.
@@joelmuthee exactly he handicapped himself. So Round 2 is a real fight which we all knew was gonna be one sided. Same thing would happen to Floyd, Pacquiao or any boxer with an MMA fighter of respective class. They are technicians of 1 field MMA fighters are complete hand to hand combat machines.
DJ actually did astonishingly well against the baddest man in Muay Thai. He reasons for taking the fight are legendary aswell. He said “am too old to start adding all kinds of special rules, special this and that, I just wanna fight”
I mean this fight was all special rules, he didnt' say "i'm too old to starting adding special rules" he was saying he's too old to try to play contractual tricks to gain the upper hand ie "MMA should be round 1" in order to gain the advantage bc he could just bait and choke RT from the get go

The idea behind a combined fight like this is an incredible idea. To see both fighters from their respective disciplines change plans of attack and defense between the rounds is as clear as night and day. Causing them to think a bit more outside the box! Keep up the awesome work ONE Championship!!!
@@Adam-uz9sc No, they definitely cared, and trained for it, and you can tell. The problem is, they're each going up against two MONSTERS of their respective sports. They basically have no choice BUT to play it safe and try to survive. Just smart fighters taking their best route to win.
That just showed how good DJ is as a fighter, he was able to neutralize Rodtang's offense and landed few good shots too...when it came to MMA, Rodtang had no answer to anything
Both of them deserve mad respect for stepping into the others realm. Rodtang with 4oz gloves seems utterly terrifying and facing DJ with grappling allowed when you have 0 MMA experience is insane to me. They're both absolute madlads.
IMO I think DJ took his back for that very reason. Choke out hurts nothing but someone’s pride as opposed to an arm bar or something that could cause long term injury/damage.
Do the refs not like clinching in ONE FC?? Seems like this ref was fast and kinda too close and invasive the entire fight. I thought it was a kickboxing fight at first lol
He had his hand ready for the tap as soon as DJ put the squeeze on him. Not to take anything away from Rodtang, he's a complete savage but I think he took a nap before he thought he could tap out of it.
The ending where they both go on their knees and bow to each other got me choked up!!! These two dudes are trying to take each other's heads off just minutes before but like true warriors, after the battle - they show their respect and honor.
I don't agree on the assesment with UFC. He had no competition and I do not mean based off him being overly skilled. He lost to Cejudo and fled the UFC. He is a baby and wants to be the best but gets upset when he realizes he isn't. I think he was overrated. In UFC alone, He DROPPED to that weight, because he lost to Cruz and didn't want to try again. He basically accepted that weight class, kind of hard to credit someone SETTLING.

I give so much credit to both of these legends. I had a chance to meet DJ and he is a very up front and stand up guy. Very respectable and respectful figure. Rodtang is and always will be a legend. I appreciated this fight so much.

The second DJ put him in the choke, I already knew Rodtang wasn’t going to tap. I’ve rarely seen someone try so hard to escape a choke. For those who don’t have any grappling experience, let me tell you, it’s very hard to remain calm and continue to effectively fight when you’re on the brink of submission. The fact that he fought with every last bit of consciousness he had and never gave up and accepted the loss shows tremendous fighting spirit. In that situation, most grapplers will wait for the hold to sink in and just tap right then, or they will go almost limp and just accept their fate like a gazelle in a lion’s jaws. Rodtang is a warrior.
Yup its like drowning, I remember tapping when the curtain was about to close n then you're coming back n see lil lights flashing. I wld be , God is that you? lol, good times. Kids save your brain cells n tap when it's locked in, just saying.
Rotdang showed what a master of his craft was at round 1, felt like a demon was chasing Mighty Mouse. DJ just showed what mma can do against one dimensional sports. Also we have to consider that DJ if not for his weight division(causing him to be unpopular) is one of the greatest mma fighters that have ever lived. Not many would have survived that round 1
Thank you for posting this fight, this is why I love ONE FC. Thank you for caring to share this and have it reach as many people as possible. Much respect to Rodtang, he's not tapping, he's going out on his shield.
Savages. The bravery of both men is legendary. DJ's head flying around from every punch, keeps his composure, and Rodtang refuses to tap after a formidable defensive effort with DJ on his back. The GOATs of their sports. Both men come out of this as winners in my eyes. I can see Rodtand having a successful future in MMA if he was to commit.
People don’t recognize how level of a fight this was, DJ was doing elite in the 1st against arguably the best Muay Thai fight in the world, took him to his own world and whooped him, they were both so outstanding and the respect and love after the fight is unmatched. Absolute goosebumps.
This fight was amazing, round 1 Rodtang showed how elite his striking is , round 2 MM reminded us why wrestling and grappling is key to winning a fight.
what do you mean a fight? An mma fight absolutely. In a real world situation I would 100 percent rather be a good muai thai striker than a bjj/wrestler. Taking someone down in a fight is likely to get you to catch a boot to the face. With rules in a 1 on 1 fight you are right, you have to have grappling. In a street fight I take striking 100/100 times
@@davesleep3870 In a 1v1 street fight it wouldn't matter what you are good at...but if it's 2v1 or 3v1 you probably shouldn't be fighting but yeah muay tai would be better for those situations. DJ would still be better off in a street fight because he has both.
@@davesleep3870 I completely disagree. In a real world situation in a 1v1 an experienced wrestler would dump the striker on his head. You say taking someone down is likely to get you kicked in the face??...the point of taking someone down is to nullify their striking ability man. IMO 9 times out of 10 if you put an experienced striker against an experienced wrestler the wrestler would do whatever they want. Unless this striker you speak of has some good take down defence or previous wrestling experience once they get grabbed they are going for a ride. In all fairness though in a street fight, someones probably getting stabbed, shot or ganged up on and beaten to death....best choice is to run unless you have no other option.
@@MbispingFan have you seen or been in many street fights? 90 percent of the time it's involving multiple people and alcohol. I feel like a trained striker could quickly KO 3 untrained guys before they could do anything to him if he was quick enough
Rodtang would be a scary monster in MMA if he started training grappling. The dude is only 24 years old and his Muay Thai striking is beyond anyone else in MMA at his weight

Regardless of Rodtang's grappling disadvantage, it is significantly harder to submit someone within 3 minutes compared to the usual 5 minute mma round. Props to Demetrious for his flawless execution!
It is extremely easy for a high level mma fighter to submit every single muay thai fighter. Muay thai fighters are not any better in grappling or wrestling than a boxer is. DJ would submit even Vasily Lomachenko, one of the best boxers alive at his weight class that would probably rip his head off in a straight boxing match. These are 2 athletes from 2 different sports, go ask DJ to fight in a jiujitsu match with a high level black belt athlete, he would probably get submitted under 3 minutes. There's just levels to all this.

However, I think you are making it sound a bit too easy my friend. You are leaving out some important factors because in hindsight DJ made it look easy. Consider that the round starts standing up, so there's a chance to get KO'd with any shot. There's also a chance that if you just shoot a takedown carelessly you'll get knee'd in the head (Askren disregarded this factor, look what happened vs Masvidal). Also in many cases the opponent can run away and eat up the clock, leaving even less time for ground fighting. Rodtang is also bigger than DJ and not just any muay thai fighter but a prime specimen of an athlete. Getting a submission is not as easy as you say. You said that in a bjj match a blackbelt in bjj can easily sub an mma fighter in 3 mins. Sometimes yes, but I advise you to go watch the bjj match of Brendan Schaub (mid level mma fighter) vs Roberto Cyborg Abreu (4th degree Black belt world champ). Try not to fall asleep waiting for the submission while watching that. Spoiler alert: 20 minutes of shaub running ends in a draw. This proves that your point is a generalization. DJ did execute flawlessly, that's why he was so happy after coz many mma fighters would have gone to rd 3.

Everything you said is the most generic sterotypical comparisons between the fighting diciplines...Not everything is so Black and White in this world and be explained with a cookie cutter response I found the whole fight completely facinating. Dj's likely never attempted a takedown so dangerous in his career. Rodtang had 3 minutes to basically defend a takedown that he knew 100% was coming with an attempted rear naked choke to finish. Why ? because Rodtangs gameplan would be to get back to the feet at all cost, giving up his back in the process. What are the implications for this...Get caught with an uppercut or knee to the face. DJ had to setup the takedown aswell with a rodtang walking backwards, light on his feet looking to end DJ's life if he dropped his hips. And good luck finding a Jui Jitsu black belt that could submit DJ in under 3 minutes, especially adcc ruleset
Sickest fight in a long while!!! Two LEGENDS! I think Dj is the most underrated athlete on the planet. UFC’s biggest mistake. Should have hooked him up with media training and fostered his public image for him so he could show up with the skills to pay the bills and show the sport at the highest skill level. It shouldn’t be a popularity contest.
The UFC just frankly doesn't like his division, it's not as popular and there aren't as many fighters with a public presence. You have to remember that Dana only cares about how much money he can make off the fighters, that's it, he doesn't care about the fighters themselves or how good they may be, just their market value. DJ is up there with the best in the sport regarding both athleticism and technical skill, he's done things in the ring we've just never seen elsewhere, and he's fought some incredibly high level competition. Unfortunately that isn't enough when he isn't Conor 2.0 making huge amounts of money and reaping the benefits of blatant favouritism as Dana's pet monkey. I mean they basically tried to set-up Henry Cejudo in a way that he was all but scheduled to win, and they clearly wanted to remove DJ as champion for some reason. Clearly the people at the top like Dana have more than sense...
The first big shot Rodtang does in the second round misses and he punches the air and spins trough and DJ is already on his back. Amazing to see. It happened a few times in the first too and DJ already saw that, he kinda took the back a little bit sometimes but wasn't allowed to do anything then. Such a beautiful technical fight. Rodtang went for the kill in the first round. No holding back. Respect to both these warriors
Man people talking about rodtang but what is really impressive is that DJ standed with him no problem. They finished him in mma immediately. DJ is a fighting freak.
DJ fought smarter if not harder, often resorting to clinching to break Rodtang's fighting rhythm and focus. Still, kudos to him for being able to hold his own and even managing to put a couple bell ringing hooks on Iron Man's face
If this is just a muaythai in whole match demetrious will be easily knockout because of rodtang's power and toughness i dont know why rodtang dont practice grappling and join MMA
DJ is one of my all time favorites! What a beast! Impressive to see him hold his own against a guy with 267 Muay Thai wins. I need more One Championship in my life.
DJ might be the greatest of all time and if the UFC marketed him better the world might actually think it like they should or at least have him in the arguement like he should be.
This was completely undair foe Rodtang,he is not an mma fighter,has bo clue about wrestling ir grappling. I hardly doubt anyone with some basic knowledge of combat sports though it would end up any different. I can only assume Rodtang did fie the money. I assure DJ would never, ever fight Rodtang in a Muay Thai match

It's unfair, really. Both fighters know how to strike and defend, but only one of them knows how to grapple and BJJ. Rodtang is an exceptional striker (10), but Johnson is good, too (9). Johnson is an exceptional wrestler and BJJ (9), but Rodtang is a white belt (2). 10 is closer to 9 than 9 is to 2. Very unfair. Fun to watch, though!
@@waynzignordics First off, Rodtang signed the contract, so it is not unfair. He isn't a slave of ONE FC, who was forced to fight. So you cannot call it unfair, because he CHOSE to do this fight.Secondly, this fight highlights the importance of being a well-rounded fighter. The difference between rounds 1 and 2 show that difference of a complete skill set in 2022. Meaning, if this fight was MMA, or a street fight, DJ would kill any Muay Thai fighter. The only situation in which a Muay Thai fighter wins, is under kickboxing or Muay Thai rules. This is important for the average joe to realize, because it is important to train in everything.
Wow I was left with chills. I’ve been watching mighty mouse for so long and seeing him dominate in the ufc then leave the ufc to another promotion and do so good makes me happy. Truly one of the GOATS. Rodtang is also one of the GOATS in Muay Thai. Respect to both fighters and to One fc , thanks for putting this masterpiece up of a fight so quick for all of us to see.
This is amazing how they did a separate round to adhere to each fighters expertise. This needs to be the future for fighters who aren’t ready to make the full transition to MMA.
Nah, pure strikers just saw how easily one of the best kickboxers in the world just got choked out. This was an exhibition, and fights like these won't be any more than that.

Seriously so entertaining, especially if you’re a huge fan and practicing martial artist as well. Seeing the legend Rodtang COMPLETELY change his style that second round had me 🤯
It's almost always going to end up the same way though, the only way it would go differently is if Rodtang (or whoever filled his shoes) had serious takedown defence. Any MMA fighter worth their salt will at least have the ability to survive the first round by playing defensively (and the first round would always be striking only), and DJ was even going on the offensive here in the first round, after which they are going to set the opponent up, take them down, and finish them, because they will most definitely have better grappling skills. It puts the non-MMA competitor on a brutal clock that just doesn't favour them unless they are significantly better than the MMA fighter in their realm of expertise. I guess you could make it more interesting by throwing grapplers into the mix, but again, it's going to be a first round defensive followed by a second round pummeling as the MMA fighter uses the rest of their arsenal to destroy their opponent without much they can do about it. This could perhaps be more interesting if it was a grappler vs a striker, with mixed rules rounds, but whoever gets the first round advantage is most likely going to win, though if the striker has TDD the grappler always loses. It's just less interesting than pure MMA because we always know how the matchups are going to play out. A well-rounded MMA fighter will always beat a more limited ruleset once that clock runs out, and as we've seen so many times, they can survive that time pretty easily.
Yeah, unfortunately for Rodtang, he's only better then DJ in muai thai in the sense that he has the upper hand. But when they go to MMA rules, he's choked out cold in 2 minutes. That means in a real fight on the street, Mighty Mouse probably would have had Rodtang on the ground and choked to death in short order. Muai Thai is wonderful but offers little protection against guys with elite ground games.

You can't really call this MMA. More like respect to DJ for doing Muay Thai. First round against a legend and future great in Rodtang. Plus Rodtangs Muay Thai experience dwarfs DJs MMA experience. Demetrious Johnson truly is the greatest fighter of all time

MM not only survived the first, but actively engaged and studied Rodtang's counters. He learned his lead body kick result in a heavy 2(+) punch combo from the Muay Thai phenom. In the second frame, MM flicks out a 30% body kick, then ducks the response combo straight to the takedown. Respect to both fighters.
@@smoketj4830 Honestly it's cool getting to see ufc's best 125ib fighter on the planet vs Asia's best because Asia tends to have smaller men so the competition is actually really stacked in those weight classes. I want to see Adriano/DJ vs Fig, Moreno, Yan and Sterling
Very weird watching Rodtang going backwards when he's always chasing and putting the fight on the center of the cage, the threat of a takedown is a hell of a thing!
1st round Muay thai rules 2nd round MMA rules Rodtang doesn't have the skills in ground fighting (jiu-jitsu). That's why he was in a defensive mode at round 2. Big respect to both fighters, it was indeed an explosive fight.
@@r.m.l2665 it's easier to defend standup fighting than MMA. MMA fighter had advantage in this comp every single time so it's not even a question. this shouldn't be repeated ever again, the outcome will almost always be like this.
@@etlimenemen Unless they did 5 5-minute rounds. It's actually easy to not get submitted if you decide to just shell up and either hope the ref stands you up or give up the round and get it back with the striking round. It's when you start to scramble that you have the chance of getting caught in something. Scrambling is a double edged sword if you are not aware of every submission being thrown at you.
This match was special. I absolutely love the idea of Hybrid rules (by rounds). Not many people would have the guts to do this. I wonder how many high profile boxers would get put to sleep like this if they fought the top MMA guys.
Maybe if high profile boxers started calling out mma fighters we'd see. But the money gap in the sports means itl only be one side calling out the other.
I'd wager that just about any pro boxer who isn't able to get the MMA fighter out in the first round is almost certainly going to get subbed in the second by anyone with good ground game. Don't get me wrong, I think this is a cool format and I'd love to see more of it, but i'd guess many of them would go down the same way. MMA fighters are gonna be better at striking (which is part of their game) than a boxer will be with anything on the mat.
There is no point doing that when boxing makes mad money. Muay Thai is much less commercial than boxing, legends like Buakuaw and Sanchai has bunch of losses in their book, they are not hand picking opponent and trying to pad record. Probably thats why Rodtang took this fight, its a great oppurtunity and fun to do so I guess. The world never saw something like that.
Guarantee there's not a single ranked boxer that would ever fight MMA, even amateur MMA fighters could maul them on the ground. If a Thai as cold as Rodtang gets this outclassed this quickly on the ground, imagine how easy it gets when kicks and knees aren't even a threat.
Damn. Rodtang was actually doing pretty good defensively that 2nd round. Seemed like DJ was having a little trouble finding the opening for the shoot. But man, the way he executed it, he threw the kick just to get it out there, not really intending to land it, knowing rodtang would counter off it, and the second he does just explodes into one of the most beautiful timed takedowns I've ever seen, lighting fast
He had no trouble, that is literally how DJ fights. He has NEVER been a great striker, but he has always had great movement, been fast, and timed his shots amazingly well. Have you ever actually watched him fight? lol
Not really, going to sleep is safer than a joint lock sure. But it can still affect your long term health. Not to mention fighters that take fits when they get slept. I don't understand what you think one can do when they're losing consciousness... Hulkmania isn't a real thing
It’s the opposite. It’s more about how unprofessional he is to protect himself for the next fight. Lots of fighters didn’t tap and they broke their bones and took a long break in their career.
Such an amazing fight. First round, Mighty Mouse on the back foot, throwing some strikes, mostly surviving. Second round, Rodtang immediately takes the back foot, and props to him, he did well defending as long as he could against a legend like DJ, and he never tapped. Loved the fight, loved the whole event!
Dj didn’t really have a huge disadvantage for 1st rd. Dj can stand and strike. Rontang had a huge disadvantage in mma since he has no wrestling/grappling. That’s why it only took one take down and it was a wrap.
Love DJ he's such a class act. Was pulling for him in this fight. I figured a choke submission was his best, cleanest chance to win. I honestly think Rodtang would let him break an arm, leg, or ankle if it was any other type of submission. Rodtang is as close to a machine as a fighter can get.
It’s actually insane how much rodtang changed as soon as the second round started. Completely on the back foot, circling and avoiding DJ closing the distance. Goes to show how different adding the ground game is and how easily a skilled MMA fighter can beat any great fighter of another discipline. One of the greatest fights in fight sports history. DJ is truly the greatest fighter of all time.
But believe Mighty Mouse can beat Bradley Martin in street fight is crazy. One grab from Bradley would put MM to another dimension MM punch is like kid punch for bodybuilders
Nah it's because DJ is great everywhere and not really a fan pleaser... Fighters like Poirier.. Mcgregor.. Gaethje.. and Pereira will always choose to stand and strike even if they fought an MMA match against a boxer/Muay Thai fighter... Example... Randy Couture vs James Toney.. or that guy vs CM Punk.. they went straight for take downs to just get the win... Poirier... Mcgregor etc... would have tried to beat them purely striking...
Amazing is subjective but important? Lol no. This was a cash grab. One of the most predictable matchups of all time because the guy that makes matches is the coach of Mighty Mouse.

Muay thai style doesnt translate to MMA, the stance invites takedowns. He'd get taken down and rag dolled by top tier MMA fighters unfortunately. Still a great fighter in his own sport.

Guys for real, the ref is good in most aspects but he is WAY too close. Like you have to adapt to the fight. They are moving all over the place quickly and he kept getting in their way. That’s like the ultimate bad ref situation. He’s interfering with their ability to strike, set up, or maneuver. He’s flat out interfering. It’s really annoying.

Watch any muay Thai fight and the refs stand super close to immediately break up illegal clinch. So that ref has to behave like a muay Thai ref in round 1 and an mma ref in round 2. Watch him in both rounds and it is quite obvious his distance and hand gestures/movements change. so it is impressive he was able to do that

We stopped seeing 'cross style' because the fighters realized they had to learn more skills to compete in nhb / mma.
Onefc just forced rodtang to fight at a massive disadvantage, particularly as the level of grappling and striking in mma has risen tremendously as people figured out how to better mix different disciplines for the cage, while muay thai is still just muay thai.

Because you can have takedowns or any other technique from MMA overall, but strikers need just one good strike to land and you are put to sleep before you even reach out for that takedowns or any other grappling combo. I see your POV but no one would use takedowns in the street fight at first, hands are faster and more powerful... I don't agree on the assesment with UFC. He had no competition and I do not mean based off him being overly skilled. He lost to Cejudo and fled the UFC. He is a baby and wants to be the best but gets upset when he realizes he isn't. I think he was overrated. In UFC alone, He DROPPED to that weight, because he lost to Cruz and didn't want to try again. He basically accepted that weight class, kind of hard to credit someone SETTLING.

The second DJ put him in the choke, I already knew Rodtang wasn’t going to tap. I’ve rarely seen someone try so hard to escape a choke. For those who don’t have any grappling experience, let me tell you, it’s very hard to remain calm and continue to effectively fight when you’re on the brink of submission. The fact that he fought with every last bit of consciousness he had and never gave up and accepted the loss shows tremendous fighting spirit. In that situation, most grapplers will wait for the hold to sink in and just tap right then, or they will go almost limp and just accept their fate like a gazelle in a lion’s jaws. Rodtang is a warrior.

Rotdang showed what a master of his craft was at round 1, felt like a demon was chasing Mighty Mouse. DJ just showed what mma can do against one dimensional sports. Also we have to consider that DJ if not for his weight division(causing him to be unpopular) is one of the greatest mma fighters that have ever lived. Not many would have survived that round 1

what do you mean a fight? An mma fight absolutely. In a real world situation I would 100 percent rather be a good muai thai striker than a bjj/wrestler. Taking someone down in a fight is likely to get you to catch a boot to the face. With rules in a 1 on 1 fight you are right, you have to have grappling. In a street fight I take striking 100/100 times

You say taking someone down is likely to get you kicked in the face??...the point of taking someone down is to nullify their striking ability man. IMO 9 times out of 10 if you put an experienced striker against an experienced wrestler the wrestler would do whatever they want. Unless this striker you speak of has some good take down defence or previous wrestling experience once they get grabbed they are going for a ride. In all fairness though in a street fight, someones probably getting stabbed, shot or ganged up on and beaten to death....best choice is to run unless you have no other option.

It is extremely easy for a high level mma fighter to submit every single muay thai fighter. Muay thai fighters are not any better in grappling or wrestling than a boxer is. DJ would submit even Vasily Lomachenko, one of the best boxers alive at his weight class that would probably rip his head off in a straight boxing match. These are 2 athletes from 2 different sports, go ask DJ to fight in a jiujitsu match with a high level black belt athlete, he would probably get submitted under 3 minutes. There's just levels to all this.

I do agree with some of what your reply says. However, I think you are making it sound a bit too easy my friend. You are leaving out some important factors because in hindsight DJ made it look easy. Consider that the round starts standing up, so there's a chance to get KO'd with any shot. There's also a chance that if you just shoot a takedown carelessly you'll get knee'd in the head (Askren disregarded this factor, look what happened vs Masvidal). Also in many cases the opponent can run away and eat up the clock, leaving even less time for ground fighting. Rodtang is also bigger than DJ and not just any muay thai fighter but a prime specimen of an athlete. Getting a submission is not as easy as you say. You said that in a bjj match a blackbelt in bjj can easily sub an mma fighter in 3 mins. Sometimes yes, but I advise you to go watch the bjj match of Brendan Schaub (mid level mma fighter) vs Roberto Cyborg Abreu (4th degree Black belt world champ). Try not to fall asleep waiting for the submission while watching that. Spoiler alert: 20 minutes of shaub running ends in a draw. This proves that your point is a generalization. DJ did execute flawlessly, that's why he was so happy after coz many mma fighters would have gone to rd 3.

I found the whole fight completely facinating. Dj's likely never attempted a takedown so dangerous in his career. Rodtang had 3 minutes to basically defend a takedown that he knew 100% was coming with an attempted rear naked choke to finish. Why ? because Rodtangs gameplan would be to get back to the feet at all cost, giving up his back in the process.
What are the implications for this...Get caught with an uppercut or knee to the face. DJ had to setup the takedown aswell with a rodtang walking backwards, light on his feet looking to end DJ's life if he dropped his hips.
And good luck finding a Jui Jitsu black belt that could submit DJ in under 3 minutes, especially adcc ruleset

The UFC just frankly doesn't like his division, it's not as popular and there aren't as many fighters with a public presence. You have to remember that Dana only cares about how much money he can make off the fighters, that's it, he doesn't care about the fighters themselves or how good they may be, just their market value.
DJ is up there with the best in the sport regarding both athleticism and technical skill, he's done things in the ring we've just never seen elsewhere, and he's fought some incredibly high level competition. Unfortunately that isn't enough when he isn't Conor 2.0 making huge amounts of money and reaping the benefits of blatant favouritism as Dana's pet monkey.
I mean they basically tried to set-up Henry Cejudo in a way that he was all but scheduled to win, and they clearly wanted to remove DJ as champion for some reason. Clearly the people at the top like Dana have more than sense...

The first big shot Rodtang does in the second round misses and he punches the air and spins trough and DJ is already on his back. Amazing to see. It happened a few times in the first too and DJ already saw that, he kinda took the back a little bit sometimes but wasn't allowed to do anything then. Such a beautiful technical fight. DJ fought smarter if not harder, often resorting to clinching to break Rodtang's fighting rhythm and focus. Still, kudos to him for being able to hold his own and even managing to put a couple bell ringing hooks on Iron Man's face

It's unfair, really. Both fighters know how to strike and defend, but only one of them knows how to grapple and BJJ. Rodtang is an exceptional striker (10), but Johnson is good, too (9). Johnson is an exceptional wrestler and BJJ (9), but Rodtang is a white belt (2). 10 is closer to 9 than 9 is to 2. Very unfair. Fun to watch, though!

So you cannot call it unfair, because he CHOSE to do this fight.Secondly, this fight highlights the importance of being a well-rounded fighter. The difference between rounds 1 and 2 show that difference of a complete skill set in 2022. Meaning, if this fight was MMA, or a street fight, DJ would kill any Muay Thai fighter. The only situation in which a Muay Thai fighter wins, is under kickboxing or Muay Thai rules. This is important for the average joe to realize, because it is important to train in everything.

It's almost always going to end up the same way though, the only way it would go differently is if Rodtang (or whoever filled his shoes) had serious takedown defence. Any MMA fighter worth their salt will at least have the ability to survive the first round by playing defensively (and the first round would always be striking only), and DJ was even going on the offensive here in the first round, after which they are going to set the opponent up, take them down, and finish them, because they will most definitely have better grappling skills. It puts the non-MMA competitor on a brutal clock that just doesn't favour them unless they are significantly better than the MMA fighter in their realm of expertise.
I guess you could make it more interesting by throwing grapplers into the mix, but again, it's going to be a first round defensive followed by a second round pummeling as the MMA fighter uses the rest of their arsenal to destroy their opponent without much they can do about it. This could perhaps be more interesting if it was a grappler vs a striker, with mixed rules rounds, but whoever gets the first round advantage is most likely going to win, though if the striker has TDD the grappler always loses.
It's just less interesting than pure MMA because we always know how the matchups are going to play out. A well-rounded MMA fighter will always beat a more limited ruleset once that clock runs out, and as we've seen so many times, they can survive that time pretty easily.

Yeah, unfortunately for Rodtang, he's only better then DJ in muai thai in the sense that he has the upper hand. But when they go to MMA rules, he's choked out cold in 2 minutes. That means in a real fight on the street, Mighty Mouse probably would have had Rodtang on the ground and choked to death in short order. Muai Thai is wonderful but offers little protection against guys with elite ground games.

MM not only survived the first, but actively engaged and studied Rodtang's counters. He learned his lead body kick result in a heavy 2(+) punch combo from the Muay Thai phenom. In the second frame, MM flicks out a 30% body kick, then ducks the response combo straight to the takedown. Respect to both fighters.

Unless they did 5 5-minute rounds. It's actually easy to not get submitted if you decide to just shell up and either hope the ref stands you up or give up the round and get it back with the striking round. It's when you start to scramble that you have the chance of getting caught in something. Scrambling is a double edged sword if you are not aware of every submission being thrown at you.
Well, in all fairness, he got destroyed the first round but managed to survive. It was expected for him to get manhandled in Muay Thai.
This match was special. I absolutely love the idea of Hybrid rules (by rounds). Not many people would have the guts to do this. I wonder how many high profile boxers would get put to sleep like this if they fought the top MMA guys.
Maybe if high profile boxers started calling out mma fighters we'd see. But the money gap in the sports means itl only be one side calling out the other.
I'd wager that just about any pro boxer who isn't able to get the MMA fighter out in the first round is almost certainly going to get subbed in the second by anyone with good ground game. Don't get me wrong, I think this is a cool format and I'd love to see more of it, but i'd guess many of them would go down the same way. MMA fighters are gonna be better at striking (which is part of their game) than a boxer will be with anything on the mat.
There is no point doing that when boxing makes mad money. Muay Thai is much less commercial than boxing, legends like Buakuaw and Sanchai has bunch of losses in their book, they are not hand picking opponent and trying to pad record. Probably thats why Rodtang took this fight, its a great oppurtunity and fun to do so I guess. The world never saw something like that.

But man, the way he executed it, he threw the kick just to get it out there, not really intending to land it, knowing rodtang would counter off it, and the second he does just explodes into one of the most beautiful timed takedowns I've ever seen, lighting fast

Such an amazing fight. First round, Mighty Mouse on the back foot, throwing some strikes, mostly surviving. Second round, Rodtang immediately takes the back foot, and props to him, he did well defending as long as he could against a legend like DJ, and he never tapped. Loved the fight, loved the whole event!

Love DJ he's such a class act. Was pulling for him in this fight. I figured a choke submission was his best, cleanest chance to win. I honestly think Rodtang would let him break an arm, leg, or ankle if it was any other type of submission. Rodtang is as close to a machine as a fighter can get.

Guys for real, the ref is good in most aspects but he is WAY too close. Like you have to adapt to the fight. They are moving all over the place quickly and he kept getting in their way. That’s like the ultimate bad ref situation. He’s interfering with their ability to strike, set up, or maneuver. He’s flat out interfering. It’s really annoying.

Watch him in both rounds and it is quite obvious his distance and hand gestures/movements change. so it is impressive he was able to do that
