Probably not information available to you as you made this decision but… There is a trail between the Bishop Pass Trailhead (south lake parking lot) and the Piute Pass Trailhead (north lake parking lot. So, a road walk isn’t necessary to do the continuous footpath. You cannot camp on it with your PCTA permit but you can day hike it easily. And the PCTA is specifically asking PCT hikers to not do the road walk you are discussing due to the dangers it causes to both the hikers and drivers on that narrow, mountainous, winding road. Recommend any future hikers use Gaia or CalTopo or paper maps to aid them in making this navigation for however long the bridge bypass is necessary. (If they want to maintain the “continuous footpath” as roadrunner and so many other hikers want to do.) I’m so enjoying watching you guys on your adventure!!!!
@@grega8586 yup. Tyee to lake Sabrina. Sabrina basin trail to the Sabrina lake parking lot. There’s still a short road walk b/w Sabrina and North Lake but much shorter (and safer) than going all the way down to the road junction.
The PCTA doesn't give a damn about hikers. Their detours should always be ignored. Over the last 10 years that I have been following PCT hikers I have seen so many trail closures like this. The PCTA's solution is always the same. Get off trail and hitchhike or take public transit. Even when with just a few minutes of looking at GAIA maps, you can find endless perfectly good detour routes that don’t even require road walking. In this case there are at least 5 good detour routes that offer a continuous footpath. But the PCTA doesn’t care. They just want hikers to get off the trail.
@@MaxZomboni the PCTA has zero control or say regarding this reroute. This decision comes from the land agencies in the area (the park service and the forest service.) The PCTA website is simply a conduit to convey these decisions to hikers.
@@fauxname9577 Actually the PCTA is a independent organization and they make the decisions. The road walk she took is not under the control of any land agencies, except maybe Caltrans. The PCTA is the one telling hikers not to do that, no one else.

How strange is that where you hiked the AT with Groceries then you run across a hiker name Pantry on the PCT for a difficult section! That slope looked really steep, that’s a heck of a workout given you are at at least 10,000 feet. Great work everyone!
I think you're right about doing the road walk. More people are going to have to get in that frame of mind with all the yearly closures on the PCT. If you ever do the CDT you will *definitely* be doing road walks to do the continuous 3000 miles.

What a great video today! You must be very strong to ascend Mather before the rest of your group. It was fun watching each person reach the top after you. Also, some of the still shots today were fantastic. Your mood seems really good. I like your idea of doing the road walk from South Lake to North Lake to maintain a continuous footpath. In the big picture, it really is just an alternate path through that part of the Sierra. And going down into Bishop should be enjoyable as well!
I totally understand why you're doing the road walk. I think I would do the same myself (although, of course, it's easy for me to say that sitting at home watching RUclips).

I'm glad you had a good day. I was hoping you'd have one. Mather pass is indeed very nice. Looks like not a lot of snow going up as well. Choosing your own path is always the best way forward. A few things I did want to comment about I hope you don't mind. 1. You all are not using your ice axes correctly, especially when glissading down from the pass. That's not how you use an ice axe. Also, when going up hill, the ice axe should be vertical almost and not in an extreme angle forward as is shown by one of you (Bujiee?) in the vid. If you put it forward like that then you won't be able to self arrest when needed. You're just going to slide down while the ice axe stays up there. Especially since I don't see any of you using a cord to tie your wrist to the ice axe. 2. The road walk according to the map seems like a 12 mile walk. That's nothing. I think you should not give up on it so good for you. 3. My final point is a very personal view point. You mentioned the PCTA and what they recognize or do not recognize. Does it matter? Are you hiking for yourself and your goals or what some association decides one should do? Same goes for the ATC. Who cares what they recognize or not. Follow what YOU want, whether it coinsides with the PCTA or not. And if you decide you want to hike a beautiful side trail paralleling the PCT? you are not going to hike that just because it does not have the trail markers of the PCT? Just my thoughts. Good luck with the bypass. Seems like you got another one coming up near Red Meadows.

I applaud your commitment to walking a continuous footpath from Mexico to Canada! I also think you do a great job of balancing the fact that walking the PCT includes a number of risky situations, but there are times when the risk is definitely not worth it. Also, go Boujee for being sensitive to you and joining you on the road walk. Great video.

Honor is required for the continuous foot path. It is far to easy to say, it is approved for safety reasons, We don’t have to do it the hard way its ok. Up until you are far down the trail, or at home thinking, I did not fight hard enough to keep the hike “ pure “. Maybe some can do that with no repercussions, it is hard enough to sleep as it is. I am not judging the others in the tramily, just how I would feel if I was there, I am glad that Boujee will be with you. Pain travels faster when shared. Congratulations on Mather Pass. Continuous footpath, definitely s goal to have and this is a spot where it makes sense. There was a fire in Oregon a few years ago that caused a 70-mile roadwalk on a heavily traveled two lane highway or a 20-mile break in continuous footpath and a 100+ mile drive, people made decisions as needed, including some who returned to walk that closed trail three years later to complete their continuous thread. HYOH, indeed 😊

They are doing well, but they are not remotely close to mountaineering pros. I think there is a need to also be honest for their sake. I was a bit worried when they said in the vid that now they feel very very confident. Mather pass is nothing more than a standard mountain pass. Nothing technical, nor sketchy. If one thinks that this is somehow special workings here, then others might get that impression as well and that's not good.
@Yetithruhikes hey I did not mean literally ready to climb K2 or anything. But just pros in the sense they can hike over passes with confidence. You are correct it is important to have a healthy amount of fear that one can throw caution to the wind.

I wholeheartedly respect your desire for a continuous footpath. It brought a tear to my eye listening to you explain that you’re going to do the road walk. Happy that Boujee is going with you. Hope the Tramily sticks together. Ya’ll are a joy to follow. Your journey is incredible. One I wish this old lady would have known about in her younger years! I only learned what the PCT and other thru hike trails were (city girl in me) a few months ago and I’ve been following a few hikers journeys since then. I live near the Sierra in Northern CA and I hope to get out and try some easy day hikes this summer! You’ve inspired me. Keep on keeping on and take care out there!
The PCT closure is 25 miles. The re-route hikes between PCT and the Lakes totals 28.4 (3.4 miles more than the closure). So whether you walk the road (which PCTA deems not safe) or arrange a ride from S to N Lake, IMO, there is always a connection to earth.
A continuous footpath via the PCT-2024 route (including a detour via Bishop Pass and Paiute Pass) makes perfect sense. There's another detour ahead around the bridge closure at mile 912 (Red's Meadow). From June 7, that detour will involve a road-ish walk, because there is also road construction, so hikers are not allowed to actually walk on the road. You have to take the summer shuttle bus (on weekends) OR walk well off the side out of the construction zone. Note also that walking up the road from Aspendell to North Lake (to get to the North Lake trailhead) is not recommended (but by now you've already done it, since these videos are off-sync by a week).
16:39 If you are putting in all this effort, for thousands of miles, over such epic terrain, I would feel the same way. I’ll be damned if I miss 1 mile, or 50 feet. If you’re gonna do it, do it all and do it well!

I'll bet nobody around today has walked the same footpath as the first person who walked it. There will always be natural disasters. The path is alive and will always be changing.
I'm curious to see how painful the walk on pavement will be. I remember how odd it felt to walk on such a firm surface after hiking for two weeks on trails...

They say microspikes are better than nothing, good for Clingman's Dome and Newfound Gap area. They say regular spikes for the Sierras and the Cascades and the CDT much better, more secure. and of coarse safer. You fell several times on this video, I hope you make the switch to regular spikes. I wanted to tell you this before you started the PCT but life happened.
So, if you choose to do glassading down a mountain, instead of walking the switchbacks, isn't that a break in the continuous footpath? And isn't it all less miles then if you were to do the actual PCT switchbacks? The same for going strsighg up and notdoing switchbacks?
As long as your body is touching the ground you are doing a continuous footpath. Riding in a car is not continuous as your feet aren't touching the ground.
Not hardly, but if they prolonged their journey and didn’t get to the northern terminus until mid to late September then they could hit significant snow in the North Cascades. At the rate she is traveling though she should finish before September.

Mather Pass is @ 12,068'. Upper Basin (the last of the "level" landscape is above 11,000' 🙂

I wholeheartedly respect your desire for a continuous footpath. It brought a tear to my eye listening to you explain that you’re going to do the road walk. Happy that Boujee is going with you. Hope the Tramily sticks together. Ya’ll are a joy to follow. Your journey is incredible. One I wish this old lady would have known about in her younger years! I only learned what the PCT and other thru hike trails were (city girl in me) a few months ago and I’ve been following a few hikers journeys since then. I live near the Sierra in Northern CA and I hope to get out and try some easy day hikes this summer! You’ve inspired me. Keep on keeping on and take care out there!
The PCT closure is 25 miles. The re-route hikes between PCT and the Lakes totals 28.4 (3.4 miles more than the closure). So whether you walk the road (which PCTA deems not safe) or arrange a ride from S to N Lake, IMO, there is always a connection to earth.
A continuous footpath via the PCT-2024 route (including a detour via Bishop Pass and Paiute Pass) makes perfect sense. There's another detour ahead around the bridge closure at mile 912 (Red's Meadow). From June 7, that detour will involve a road-ish walk, because there is also road construction, so hikers are not allowed to actually walk on the road. You have to take the summer shuttle bus (on weekends) OR walk well off the side out of the construction zone. Note also that walking up the road from Aspendell to North Lake (to get to the North Lake trailhead) is not recommended (but by now you've already done it, since these videos are off-sync by a week).

No. It's not plain mountaineering. This is classic alpine hiking. No need to go overboard with things.

I'll bet nobody around today has walked the same footpath as the first person who walked it. There will always be natural disasters. The path is alive and will always be changing.
I'm curious to see how painful the walk on pavement will be. I remember how odd it felt to walk on such a firm surface after hiking for two weeks on trails...

Julianne, one of the reasons I follow you is because you are a "purist'. I don't enjoy those who skip parts of the trail because of incovenience or because they are choosing an easier route. They say microspikes are better than nothing, good for Clingman's Dome and Newfound Gap area. They say regular spikes for the Sierras and the Cascades and the CDT much better, more secure. and of coarse safer. You fell several times on this video, I hope you make the switch to regular spikes. I wanted to tell you this before you started the PCT but life happened.

So, if you choose to do glassading down a mountain, instead of walking the switchbacks, isn't that a break in the continuous footpath? And isn't it all less miles then if you were to do the actual PCT switchbacks? The same for going strsighg up and notdoing switchbacks?
As long as your body is touching the ground you are doing a continuous footpath. Riding in a car is not continuous as your feet aren't touching the ground.
Is there snow the entire way to Canada?
Not hardly, but if they prolonged their journey and didn’t get to the northern terminus until mid to late September then they could hit significant snow in the North Cascades. At the rate she is traveling though she should finish before September.
