We wore shorts and froze our balls off. Then we scrambled rocks and almost died. Then we forested for cinnamon rolls and devoured them.
It’s a hard knock life, LETS GO!

Good morning, Julianne. Glad you all made it through the rock scramble and snow safely. A long roadwalk. And you didn't get back til after dark. It'll be interesting to see what time you get up tomorrow. Great scenery. That lake was really pretty and still also. You are allowing me to see places I'll never be able to visit. I thank you for that. I find myself praying even as I watch the video. It isn't until later that I remember that the video wouldn't be playing if you weren't ok.. Then I remember that those prayers are good for wherever you are. Have a good day, wherever you are. Take care. Stay safe. See you tomorrow.

So I did this a few years back in July. Not the thru hike - just from bishop pass trailhead down to dusy basin and back - around 14 miles.
It was summer but covered in snow and snow bridges everywhere. The switchback is often covered or partially covered by snow even in summer so can be a little sketch even tho it’s not the most challenging of passes.
Dusy basin is so beautiful if you have time to just chill a day or two. You can do day hikes down to where it meets the JMT or just explore the basin. Cheers and good luck

That's a long day, I'd be napping by noon 😂 Great that your PCT Alternate worked out so well, that roadwalk looked incredibly empty of traffic, but squeezing in a restock and shower must be blissful.
Sadly, it seems FarOut (Guthooks) comments are becoming as useful as AllTrails. Although everyone comes from a different experience and has a different perspective on a trail, one would hope the hard data is better balanced by commenters. Anyway, I'm awaiting the sleep hours count tomorrow after this series of exhausting days!

Happy to see you are happy. It's the most important thing. Keep on being happy.
    1. Fartout comments are more than 50% stupid. People use it as social media more than actually useful data. However, Bishop pass, in matters of technical terms, is indeed considered a very easy pass. Does that mean that YOU actually felt safe there? No. So take comments as they are, opinions. Worry about yourself and don't follow comments on Fartout.
You mentioned that the comments were making it sounds like a piece of cake and the opposite of fear mongering. Yet you and Bujiee were saying "you almost died there", which actually sounds like fear mongering and overexaggarate. One shouldn't argue with a personal feeling of another person. So, you found it sketchy and difficult while other thought it was very easy. Just to show the vast differences in comfort levels and experience between hikers. All have a place on trail.
    2. These are not PCT miles. It's a bypass. It's YOUR trail miles. Again, I fail to see the need for recognition by PCTA or anyone else for that matter. Or maybe I just don't understand the point you tried to make by saying that. I sure hope you can maintain your continous footpath. It's becoming increasingly difficult to do that on the PCT because of wild fires. Let's hope for the best for this season and the ones after.
    3. You chose this bypass and the roadwalk. You could have also just stay on a bypass trail the whole time (besides maybe a tiny bit of road). It seems like you like getting to towns every 3-4 days at max. So, for that, road walks might sometimes be the only way to achieve that.
    4. Blue blazing is AT language. :)
Enjoy getting back on the PCT tomorrow! Yosemete is getting closer!

Nobody walks a “continuous footpath”. Or, everybody always walks one. If you’re hitchhiking, it’s not a continuous footpath. I get it, people want to say “but i went back to where i left off!”. Yes, but you weren’t continuously walking. Furthermore, wherever you walk is a continuous footpath. Does it really matter that some arbitrary path was labeled decades ago? The whole point of getting out into the wilderness is to stop playing these silly man-made games that people treat as if they fell from the sky, like mathematics or logic, and we are compelled to adhere by these rules. Ultimately, if you care what other people think of your hike, and whether you are playing by their imaginary rules, so be it. HYOH - hike your own hike. But is it really YOUR own hike if you’re trying to play somebody else’s game and copy that arbitrary footpath? It’s I’m not advocating avoiding cars or not getting a hitch or whatever. I’m advocating not caring about it. Just walk and take care of each other and avoid unnecessary risks. Put another way, wherever you go could just as well be blazed with a Road Runner River Crossing symbol and it would be called the Road Runner River Crossing Trail. And other people would have the task, if they choose to accept it, of following exactly in YOUR foot steps. And if it gets enough attention, people will make videos about the RRRCT thru hike, and it would have its own branding, and people would get tattoos of the symbol, and make a fuss about it and correct and scold each other for not doing a continuous footpath on the RRRCT. But that’s what you’re doing, copying somebody else’s arbitrary trail. It’s delusional to think there’s such a thing as a ‘trail’. The whole planet is a trail. A trail is just wherever people walk, and if enough of them do it, the ground gets disturbed to make a path. But none of the above has anything to do with the wonder, joy and challenge of hiking. Preoccupation with a ‘continuous footpath’ is just a way of turning a landscape into a competitive bragging-rights rat-race. Like people obsessed with money or looks or fame or who has the nicest car. And the judging that goes along with whoever is not following these made-up rules or not ‘winning’ the rat-race. But the easier argument against ‘continuous footpath’ is to just point out all the ways somebody is failing at it by taking an even stricter more ‘purist’ attitude about it. Or, it can be argued against by showing everybody is always doing a continuous footpath. And of course, people will comment to this by saying “HYOH!!”. Yup, and that’s my point. There’s no alternative but to HYOH, although one could be delusional in aspiring to hike somebody else’s hike. And i’m just arguing against the delusion.

      Perfectly written.

    • @larkangel6593
      @larkangel6593 12 дней назад +4

      Preach it brother.
Perfect example: The Pacific crest extends well into Baja - in fact, Picacho del Diablo at 10.2k high is just 125 miles south of the PCT terminus.
But it's not part of the "trail" because a political line was drawn in 1848 specifically to capture San Diego bay (Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo).
Besides, the JMT/PCT actually runs along the valleys of each watershed, which is why Roper came up with the idea of the SHR.
And any Sierra aficionado soon learns there's way more out there than any arbitrary path, especially the brutal east side THs that insert you immediately into the remote high country.

@@Yetithruhikesyes, that’s another dimension i didn’t address but could have - the very idea of ‘completing’ a ‘thru’ hike and what counts as ‘thru’. The AT is not a real thru hike - it’s just one big “section hike” of the Eastern Continental Trail. Don’t care. Planet earth is a big ocean with some trails on it. Trails continue until you hit water again. Your life is a continuous hike on this trail, until you die.
