SONG CREDITS:
Text: Frederic Weatherly (1848--1929); Additional lyrics by Keith Evans; Music: "Londonderry Air," traditional Irish tune;
Arrangement by McKay Crockett
Tantara Music Publishing
Performed by BYU Vocal Point 2012--2013
Soloist: Keith Evans
This beloved song was originally intended as a love song sung by a girl to her sweetheart, but it is now more often associated with brotherly affection between friends. When McKay Crockett collaborated with Keith Evans for this arrangement, Evans viewed the lyrics in a different way: about a father struggling to share his feelings with his departing son. In the newly written final verse, the father contemplates that perhaps he will outlive his precious Danny Boy.
LYRICS:
O Danny Boy, the pipes, the pipes are calling
From glen to glen and down the mountainside.
The summer's gone and all the roses falling.
'Tis you, 'tis you must go and I must bide.
But come ye back when summer's in the meadow,
Or all the valley's hushed and white with snow.
'Tis I'll be here in sunshine or in shadow.
O Danny Boy, O Danny Boy, I love you so.
When winter's come and all the flow'rs are dying,
And I am dead, as dead I well may be,
You'll come and find the place where I am lying
And kneel and say an "Ave" there for me.
But I shall hear, though soft you tread above me,
And all my grave shall warmer, sweeter be.
And you will bend and tell me that you love me;
And I shall sleep in peace until you come to me.
O Danny Boy, the stream flows cool and slowly;
And pipes still call and echo 'cross the glen.
Your broken mother sighs and feels so lowly,
For you have not returned to smile again.
So if you've died and crossed the stream before us,
We pray that angels met you on the shore;
And you'll look down, and gently you'll implore us
To live so we may see your smiling face once more. Видеоклипы
This rendition was played at my son, Daniel’s, funeral. It’s as though it was written and performed for him. He was a magnificent musician. He died at age 24, and I, his mother am truly broken...I miss my Danny boy’s smile.
So very sorry for your hurt Marilee, and the profound and heartbreaking loss of your son.
Oh, Marilee, I'm so sorry for your loss. No mother should have to bury a child. :-(
So sorry to hear your sad story..
My deepest condolences for your loss.
I'm so sorry for your pain. May God keep you wrapped in his warm embrace.
“When all the valley’s hushed” background Vocals hush to pianissimo
“And kneel and say an Ave there for me” background Vocals “Amen”
“For you have not returned to smile again” background Vocals - “no, no, no, no” because he doesn’t want to believe it.
This is the best arraigned piece I’ve heard in a very long time.
Ooh! This is so beautiful, I am crying. I had it sung at my father's graveside. They include the verse of song the verse that proves what I told people for years. This is not a romantic love song, but a father's song to his son going to war. My father suffered from his injuries in combat and as a Prisoner of the Gestapp and of the Wehrmacht. My stepfather was a POW, too. BYU's music is wonderful.
My grandma was a missionary in Scotland in the early 50's. She grew to love this song and often sang it to me. This morning she passed into the spirit world. Thank you Vocal Point for your beautiful rendition that I can use to remember her.
Hey Dallin. So cool of you to share the sweet sentiment you have with this song. We hope you and the family are doing well at this time. So humbling for us to hear that you have found some consolation in this song. 💙🤗
Lovely song
Having sung this song with a choir in high school, I can attest it is hard not to cry even singing this wonderful piece. When you hear a choral song, the best seat in the house is not found in the audience. It is singing among and being surrounded by those singing it. You can feel the power of the song flowing through you from their sound vibrations. More powerful, emotional parts are louder, and you can feel it in your body better than any sound system in the world.
I can agree to this. Feeling the vibrations flow through you is truly something harmonious.
The third verse got me weeping...
There's no worst pain in this existance than that of a grieving parent
My Father died at the 10th December 2022....he was a scots man...his mother sang the Song to him when he was a little boy...
Now weve heard the song at his funeral....great version!!!!
Oh man, I remember my dad singing this to me before going out to the Gulf again... I have never been so happy nor cried so much as when he came home safely.
@emille mcmillan The gulf war I guess...
glad to hear you didn't lose him
❤️❤️❤️
Heyyy broww
I thank your dad for his service. I'm also glad he returned safely.
Ah jeez. I'd never heard that last verse before. I broke out crying listening to this because when my mom died last year her last wish was for me to get right with God so she could see me on the resurrection day. I miss you terribly mom. Beautiful version, guys. Thank you.
The soloist Keith Evans wrote it himself.
I am sorry
you will see your mother one day
may she rest in peace and you'll see her again when your time comes

This version of Danny Boy has now spoiled me for all other versions I know. Other covers, arrangements done by any choir I've been in...every time I sing/listen to them now I'm like, "Eh, lacks a certain power, emotion..." just because this version is SO DAMN GOOD.
I've looked up so many versions of this song. From the 1950's, maybe earlier, all the way up to modern time. This is the ONLY version that truly got it right. That truly hit the note, not literally but figuratively. The purity and grace. The love, the power, the righteousness. The wholeness. No other even touches this. And it's BYU!!!! I'm beyond impressed. I'm thankful.
There was a gentleman in the late 50's or early 60's who would sing this song on Lawrence Welk Show. I can still hear his voice but I cannot remember his name.
You should check out “The Choirboys - Danny boy”. Their version is amazing!!
ruclips.net/video/ljS0hhPEPHc/видео.html
Michael londra’s is my absolute favorite. Sorry but groups tend to focus on the ‘artistic’ style of the notes like these guys. Michael focused on tve emotions. But everyone is different
Try out Gentry's version too!
Byu are amazing .. anything byu OS so blessed .. I love everything byu stands for .. vocal point are just so talented too ... I live in England UK and wear my byu sport shirt with so much pride .. some ppl dont even know what it means .. so i tell them and then I also give them book of mormon too .
A famous poem, and deservedly so. And this rendition of this piece is the best I have ever heard. Period. The lead singer believes what he sings, and couples that with a deep musicality. Thank you for this performance. There are three or four videos on RUclips that I come back to over and over -- and this is one of them.
I seriously cannot get over the 3rd verse. It's so moving. It matches the tone of the original poem so well, whilst still being hauntingly beautiful. Amazing addition to an already iconic song. Well done, Keith Evans.
I'am Danny Boy in short Dani.First time I heard this song last April 6,2016 afternoon. When my wifi cut off, unfinished to heard. But its too enough for me to cry, very beautiful and meaningful song.I truly cried.
I'm Scottish so I've heard this song many times but this version is the best I've ever heard.
My mother says that when she was expecting my brother Daniel, every time she heard "Oh Danny Boy," he moved non stop. We lost our Dan yesterday and this rendition has us all profoundly overwhelmed.
My grandfather served in WWII and Vietnam and passed away due to natural causes in 2014. At our family reunion, all 7 of his children surprised him by singing this, his favorite song. He passed peacefully 4 days later. He was buried at Arlington National Cemetery with full military honors.
It has been five years and I still cannot listen to this song without crying.
Men like your grandfather did more for the rest of us than people would like to admit. My family came to America after WW1. My great grandfather a Russian born German with a Jewish wife. They saw the way things were turning and got out, but so many weren't so lucky and many others that didn't would have suffered if not for people like your grandfather. You are obviously proud of him and you have every right to be. Allow me to join you in that pride, may he rest in peace knowing he is appreciated.
@@stephanginther9051 Thank you, you've made my week.
Undisputed best version I have ever heard. Gives me the shivers.
Very few times in my life have I heard this beloved piece performed so remarkably well.
Remembering my Father, George Daniel Bouder - 1930-2012. You would have loved this one, Dad.
May Angels guard your rest.
Your father was Danny Boy.
I am sorry for your loss, I hope you have a good one : )
I have been very depressed lately and I turned on this song and just remembered who I still have to live for. I didn't know what else to do with life and I was about to just give up, but this song just comes to mind and I sing along with it and I just break down and relax. You guys are amazing singers and are very inspirational. I am thinking about joining choir again because of you guys. Love what you guys sound like together. Thanks for years of inspiration and great music.🙂
I hope and pray God heals your heart jeff
God bless you
Never once had Danny boy not brought me to tears...whoever may sing it...but apart from the Celtic Women, this is one of the best I've heard.
Okay one more comment... since I can't seem to stop listening to this. It's just heavenly. It even lulled my son to sleep last night. Just angelic.
This is my favorite of all of the songs you guys have done. Such emotion.
Zach Collier Thanks, Zach! We appreciate your support! Thanks for being part of the Nearer, My God, to Thee video with us as well! :)
BYU Vocal Point Thanks guys. It was an absolute blast!
Much Tears...
Such Cry
Very heartbreak. 😖
My grandpa just passed and Danny Boy was his favorite song, and this was his favorite version.
We're honored to be a part of your and your grandpa's lives like that. Thanks so much for letting us know. We're sorry for your loss. 💙🙏
Keep up the great work.
This song was my mother's favourite song. When I listen to this song, I miss her.
Jinho Lee i think she's listening with you ❤️
I cried. A lot.
Jason Free girl
Me too...
Keith Evans is very close to the perspective of the song. It is a song sung by a grandfather to his grandson. It is the purest form of brotherly love.
BYU did an absolutely amazing job with this song. You guys have incredible voices.
This is the only rendition of Danny Boy I've ever enjoyed. All the others just seem to be so slow and dragging, and have the feel that they've sung it so many times that the song has lost its meaning. This doesn't have those qualities. It's absolutely amazing.
So beautifully delivered the meaning of the song is brought out in sacred measure for all to feel holiness internally and deeply
Certainly the most powerful and beautiful version of this song I have ever heard! Moving is not a word nearly forceful enough to describe the performance. I am 71 years old and couldn't hold back.
That was an incredible and haunting version of one of the most famous songs in history. Having lived in Ireland, the scenery in Utah looks like Hades in comparison. It made the voices even more heavenly in contrast.
***** Hahaha if only we had been able to shoot this video in Ireland, right?! We would have loved that. Thanks for listening! :)
***** That was one of the weirdest compliments ever.
+BYU Vocal Point what are those shoes you guys are wearing and where can I buy them.
+Johanna A. Florez ROTF!!
+Kyle O'Bryan Jesus fuck, Kyle - cool your jets. Idiot.
This song reminds me of my mom. She passed away in 2012, but some of my earliest memories as a kid was her singing this song to me. This will forever be my all time favorite song because of her. I miss you so much momma bear.
I'm literally in tears right now.... A year ago our choir was in Ireland and it was truly a trip of a lifetime.
Keith this song always makes me think of grandpa and you sing it so so perfect. Crying baby here. Love you.
Simply beautiful....tears are dripping down my cheeks.
Literally the best song I've ever heard.
you got that right
It's great! Have you listened to Voctave?
We had a son that we lost at age 17 named Danny. When I am a sad mom and missing him I listen to all of your beautiful voices and I feel better and I feel the comfort and calming of the spirit.
Who was the genius to say, "Hey, guys, let's sing Danny Boy?" Because he deserves an award. Like all of them.
I'm not crying. It's just been raining...on my face.
Ah, who gives - I am crying. This is beautiful!
I listened to this all night on replay. Great I'm hooked. It's very pretty to listen too
I thought i was the only one
This Celt woman cannot listen to this without crying. The Goddess is truly an Irishwoman.
The Music of The Spheres!!! Love it!!!
I want this played at my funeral
Here's another (Apocryphal) third verse
"But if I live,
and should you die for Ireland,
Let not your dying thoughts
be just of me.
But say a prayer to God
for our dearest Ireland.
I know he'll hear
and help to set her free.
And I will take your pike
and place my dearest,
And strike a blow,
though weak the blow may be.
T'will help the cause
to which your heart was nearest
Oh Danny Boy, Oh, Danny boy
I love you so.
robert tucker this is beautiful. Did you write this yourself?
Daniel O'Connor a·poc·ry·phal
adjective
(of a story or statement) of doubtful authenticity, although widely circulated as being true.
robert tucker nah
Ya, I'm pretty sure that this verse gained super popular during Ireland's separatist movement and was even used by the IRA
LOVE the 3rd verse lyrics. Gordon B. Hinckley surely smiles down from heaven. Well done VP and well done Keith.
I'd only ever heard two verses. Imagine my surprise to hear a third that had me weeping. Even more impressive given that it was written by one of these fine fellows.
been singing in choirs for about 15 years. I have done a capella, accompanied, even with orchestra. You guys have something amazing much love!
A classic performed beautifully gentlemen. Here's a pint to Ireland !
I love this song so much ........my mom and I cryed and I saw this video at school (cedar ridge middle school)
I just found this song my big brother Daniel passed away in 2015 and I'm still grieving him. I love you Danny.... ~your baby sister
This is so beautiful! For someone who has 9 1/2 years of choral experience, I've actually never heard this song until now and I wouldn't have even known that the third verse wasn't part of the traditional piece. This was so well-done. Have it on repeat.
Makes me cry every time.
Me too. I have never heard a more contemporary version that still keeps the traditional tune. This should bring tears to any honest heart.
***** I don't know about whether my heart is honest, but it is certainly brought to tears by this song (and this version, especially). Simply stunning - especially the new final verse.
one of the best "Danny-Boy" acapella piece I ever heard. Spectaculare Boy-Group!
The winner of “Danny Boy” on RUclips.❤
this song is incredible! I have listened to it many times over, and never with dry eyes. The leading vocalist has such emotion in his voice- just amazing!
Yes I am listening in 2019 lovely song
There amazing aint they .. i live in england i am sure i was born in the wrong country lol .. everything thats mormon culture in utah i love ..
Also mates with byu football players and also baseball too personally
And now for a little Irish on St. Patrick's Day. Happy St. Patrick's Day World from my little corner of the world!
This song has always had a special place in my heart. That space grew about a million times with this specific version. Absolutely beautiful!
I got chills and goosebumps while listening and watching your video. My son Danny, has been away for 2 years and I miss him so.
The replay button broke again...
I love this epic song...well done by BYU Vocal Point...I hope they play this when I'm gone...before the Devil knows... still hating his Eternal Demise...and doesn't know I left the area...What a joyous day that would be...For all of us...including me!
This has to be the most beautiful song I've ever heard.......
This is a hauntingly beautiful song. The BYUVP sings it so well.
I adore this version of Danny Boy. Thanks so much for your amazing talents guys! It is much appreciated.
I'm singing this for my 10th grade chorus and she showed this, I cried because it made me think of my passing grandpa. Rip 💓😖
Ok, I'm a man and I cried.
Wait, why shouldn't you...
Seriously, I'm wondering lol... it's not like we're still in the older ages of ignorance when it was considered unbecoming of us, men, to show or feel natural human emotions from things that touches our soul.
Of course, someone had to resort to referring to certain, irrelevant extremities (and inevitably expose some homophobia and/or bigotry to an extent), but yeah... that's not what we're talking about here. ;)
LoL, likewise... there are too many people in this world like you that feel some much-needed sense of self-worth from/by speaking to others in your belittling ways -- whether you're joking, half-joking, or not. It doesn't take an intelligent person to see that, and I'm not worried. :) Now let others just enjoy the awesome song (which you can also focus on doing too... in your bubble).
Jared Anthony Davidson I agree. Also, don't feed the troll.
My goodness. This was so amazingly wonderful. Being Irish myself, I had to watch this video, and I can easily say that this is by far the best cover that I've ever seen of this song. This song song sound incredibly similar to "You Raise Me Up." I think it'd be amazing if you would be able to sing that song. Once again, excellent job. You've just gained an active subscriber.
In general, I try to avoid listening to this song, due to the fact that it has been sung in some very sad situations, but your version has definitely changed my attitude about it! It was beautiful, and although it gave me goosebumps, I had a happy feeling while listening to it, as opposed to sad feelings. It made my day! Thank you for sharing this!!!!! :)
Its BYU they have a gift of doing that lol i agree
God in Heaven is Irish. There is no other explanation for the beauty of this song.
Absolutely Perfect! Y'all are amazing! Keep singing for God!
Grieving Mum, hope of a better life to come...
third verse is actually my favorite, GREAT WORK
I have been all over youtube listening to groups do this song. This BY FAR THE BEST version. None compare. Well done gentlemen!!!!
My mom used to sing this to me all the time! I love this song and have loved it for a while ever since I was younger
Beautiful version. I never knew there was a third verse. Good lads.
My Dads name is Daniel, he just passed feels like this was done just for him.
May your old man rest in peace.
We'll have a baby boy soon, we'll name him Daniel
I've been asked to give a tribute at my cousin's funeral. And, I plan to sing this song coz I don't have any words. Just 21 and already gone just listening to different renditions has me in tears.
This group is AMAZING!!!!! I have goose bumps all over my body. Thank you thank you for lifting my spirit. My aunt just passed and is helping me feel at peace.
OMG when a wonderful song with such talent is mixed.....tears flow easily and I am not ashamed of that. Great rendition I have heard and saved and listen to over and over again.
Well done, Lads.Very well done.Thank you for sharing this.
Vocal Point 2012-2013; Conlon Bonner, Keith Evans, Adam Heimbigner, Trevor Johnson, Landon Peay, Jon Rose, Robert Seely, Scott Shattuck, Jake Tengelsen
Dieses Lied transportiert viele Emotionen! Sehr schön gesungen.
Heard it the first time today ... and was blown away. Wonderful. I don't have the words to describe it ...
I've been listening to different renditions of this song all day. THIS one brought tears to my eyes. Wow such heart and emotion...
Being of Irish heritage this song always hits a very tender spot in my heart (given that it's never played during good times) but it's a connection I still get to keep with my loved ones who've passed on. It's just a shame I can't make it more than seconds before breaking down like a child.
I don't know what it is about you Mormons but y'all sing hymns better that any other denomination. Between BYU Vocal Point and the Mormon Tabernacle Choir, y'all are some pretty talented singers.
My favorite song, Danny boy. Irish emotion seems like Korean's. I love son, Kieth Evans! ~ from Seoul, Korea♡.♡
The song is English not Irish, written by English lawyer Fredrick Weatherly.
I'm not crying... I'm *_NOT!_*
. . .
* *_Cries and sobs the night away_* *
+Luke Lantern NO I'M NOT CRYING YOU'RE CRYING.
jessica prescott NOBODY'S * muffled sob * CRYING!
Luke Lantern Let's all just admit it . . . THIS REALLY HURTS.
jessica prescott FINE! But, it hurts in a not bad way. Damn feels... ;-; **hugs**
Luke Lantern *returns virtual hug* One of my favorite Irish songs. And they do SUCH a good job.
'No greater love."
Heavenly Father; please bless the ones who lay down their lives so that others can live free in Your Son's Holy name amen.
That was April 06,2016 afternoon,I heard this song and make me cry.Truly I cried.
Oh Kieth your voice is so beautiful! Love vocal point so much!
Your rendition is the best I've ever heard. Makes me cry.
Well thank you! 💙🙏
so inspirational... this song is so comforting. my ancestors are from Ireland... this song takes me back to a simple time ... the pipes will call me one day and I will leave my "Danny Boy"... thanks
What a fantastic version , love this so much ,makes me cry every time, you guys are amazing ,
This version of this song is my Favorite!!!
My mother-in-law was first generation Irish born in this country and hearing this always makes me think of her. This is by far a version that she would have loved. Amazing!!
"In sunshine or in shadows" ... what this song means and represents in my life is significant but to hear our friends' son singing it, I am tearfully so touched, words couldn't possibly express. Such a talent you all have; indeed a gift from on high. Love this and will keep it close always!
Oh that voice!!!!!!
I just can't say how beautiful this song is... I've loved this song for a very long time, and this is the most beautiful rendition I've heard!! Thank you Vocal Point for your uplifting music! And Keith for one of the most beautiful voices I've ever heard...
