Keith Jarrett is on a difficult medical journey now. Sending prayers up that he will return to what he so clearly loves. Still, if he never plays another note, whether by force or by choice, he has sailed us all to musical nirvana and back more times than we deserved.

Regarding your RUclips comment about Keith Jarrett playing the traditional tune "Danny Boy" many people don't know that originally it was written as a description of a dying father, saying good bye to his son, who was being called off to war..."the pipes, the pipes are calling" the son off to war. Neither the father or the son knew if they would ever see each other again, hence the lyric about the father returning in spirit. I used to laugh at this tune, always hearing it sung as a simple beer-drinking song that has been
popularized over the years, until I learned the meaning of the lyrics. I've played this ballad as a piano solo to many audiences over the years. I preface the playing by telling them of the meaning of the lyrics, and I ask if they have ever had to say good bye to a loved one, as I had to my father when he was dying. This is the song of the last good bye, and Keith perfectly expresses the true sentiment and heartfelt tenderness of this simple, timeless and enduring ballad.

@@jennifer86010 If you read the Wikipedia article (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Londonderry_Air), you will see that the words of Danny Boy are a later, 20th century, addition to an old Irish tune collected in the 19th century, and compete with many other songs and hymns (e.g. “I cannot tell, why he whom angels worship”) set to the same air, whose origins remain uncertain.

    KEITH JARRETT - Danny Boy
It's coming up to that time of year when my kid brother Ron died - in his sleep, at home, age 68. He loved DANNY BOY, with its poignant “when all the leaves are dying” lyric. Not long before his passing I shared with my brother this, “my favorite instrumental” version - Keith Jarrett in a live performance before an appreciative audience. You just know that Keith is the sort of musician who “never forgets the lyric.”
[Reminded again of something “Nelms123” wrote below this video:]
"It is really amazing... but I'm going to wager that you know the lyrics... those who do not, don't yet know the depth of this tune. I like to phrase everything to flow through the words of the song, and i think Keith is doing that here. Especially when it comes to the final verse, i like to play it as if the mother is singing to her son from her grave. Brilliant tune."
    ----
I think of something the great, English-born jazz pianist Marian McPartland said to her good friend Oscar Peterson - about witnessing a live performance by a great jazz saxophonist, who came down from the stage looking disconsolate. "What's wrong?" Marian asked him. The reply: "I forgot the words . . . "
The composer of that ancient Irish melody is unknown, but an Englishman (!) wrote those memorable words: “Fred Weatherly” who also wrote ROSES OF PICARDY (Find Sinatra's 'Great Songs From Great Britain' album with arranger Robert Farnon for the retire-the-trophy version of that one.)
[Love the back story on Weatherly's lyric shared at Wikipedia:]
'Initially written to a tune other than "Londonderry Air", English lawyer and lyricist Frederic Weatherly wrote the words to "Danny Boy" in Bath, Somerset in 1910.
After his Irish-born sister-in-law Margaret (known as Jess) in the United States sent him a copy of "Londonderry Air" in 1913, Weatherly modified the lyrics of "Danny Boy" to fit the rhyme and meter of "Londonderry Air". First recording was in 1915.

"But when ye come, and all the flowers are dying,
If I am dead, as dead I well may be,

And kneel and say an 'Ave' there for me . . . "

Just pure genius. This gift of reharmonization comes from" letting go" of an incredible amount of "book knowledge" contained in his soul so that his reharmonizations of the melody just flow forth. It's like he discovers new colors and possibilities of harmony each with its own set of emotions and feelings every time he repeats the melody. In this particular area of composition, of which improvisation over set chord changes is the methodolgy, only Bill Evans was on this general level. No doubt, Keith was influenced by Bill. Rest in peace Bill - you died too soon.

One of those rare out-of-tempo solo performances where you hear the lyric -- hear those words composed to a traditional Irish melody by an Englishman, Fred Weatherly -- who a century ago wrote another popular song, Roses of Picardy. But you knew that. A "Fall-time" song with a special appeal to Catholics (Ave Maria).
"But when ye come, and all the flowers are dying,
If I am dead, as dead I well may be,
You'll come and find the place where I am lying,
And kneel and say an 'Ave' there for me . . . "
Mr. Jarrett's is still my favorite solo piano recording of DANNY BOY -- tied for first with his hero Bill Evans' late-in-life rendition. Similar but different. And both so achingly beautiful. Thanks for sharing, Music Video Vault.

Mister Jarrett’s Danny Boy’s is throughly inspiring and amplifying of one’s consciousness, and no commentary, and, or, words can do justice to something so moving and profound. But, beyond its essential beauty; it is it improvisational and transitory nature, that, which makes it so precious. Here now and then gone.
Like all great music and so many of the other beautiful things that can inspire us; it is there for just a moment, only. The present moment, asking us to acknowledge our connection with it and the ONENESS we share with all things!
Blessings to all those that can tap into its sublime power and a full measure of empathy for those, few, that may miss the amazingly exalted beauty of this performance.
