    - Caryll is the one who translated the word "hunter" into the mark.
    - Caryll was the only one capable of doing that.
    - Pthumerians are also aware of this mark long before there was any Caryll.
    So either the devs wanted to show that the assignment of hunters by the great ones goes way back, but kinda overlooked that Pthumerians were unaware of Caryll runes. Or, they also had their own translator. The latter is significant because it means that marking is not Caryll's visual conception of the word "hunter" uttered by a great one. Rather, it's a literal precise translation! By literal translation, I mean how the great ones want you to picture that word.
    If that is the case, then the great ones might have bestowed the power of interpreter onto Caryll, much like what they did for past iterations. Maybe there is always a chosen translator. This makes this mysterious Caryll character even more interesting. Also, this implies that one should take all other runes as literal translations.

      It does, after all, say the runes were "discovered" by Caryll, rather than "come up with" so I'd have to agree that they are symbols directly bestowed by the Great ones rather than Caryll's own interpretations of their utterings

    Has anyone pointed out in the comments yet that there are rooms in the Chalice Dungeons with dozens of corpses hanging upside down, legs bound but arms dangling? As well as that, the chalice tombstones in the Hunter's Dreams have alternative, perhaps 'earlier' depictions of the Hunter's Mark, which have more obviously humanoid body shapes.
    Also, would it be worth considering implications of blood-letting? Hanging someone upside down to let the blood drain out, or go to their heads?

    "But when we die to Gehrman, we're free from the dream."
    I think you're right about it having to be someone with the Hunter mark having to kill you to get out of the dream, but you have to remember that if Gehrman kills you after you've refused to leave the dream, you reawaken until you kill him. I think that in order to remove the hunter's mark you not only need to be killed by someone with the mark but also have to be willing to have the mark removed. Gehrman seems like he wanted to leave the dream so when we kill him in the dream he likely was willing to leave and is why we can remove him.

    In talking about the Hunter's Mark existing even as far back as Pthumerians, I feel like there's a different meaning assigned to the word. 'Cause if you think about it, how would it make sense that these sounds so complex and alien that they can only be transcribed in abstract pictographs, have direct English translations? I think the idea of the word "Hunter" has different connotations between the various people who use it. Yharnam as a civilization would interpret it as having to do with "The Hunters" as an organization or occupation, where-as the Pthumerians might have interpreted it in a different way, and the Great Ones themselves in yet another way.
    Personally, what my guess is is that "Hunter" does not refer to Hunters as we know them, it's a far older concept than the people we cal Hunters. I think that maybe it means something along the lines of "Servant", as in the mark brands someone as a Great One's errand boy, which they send off to "Hunt" for whatever they would need a mortal to do for them. It isn't the Great One declaring them A Hunter, but rather as THEIR Hunter. Almost like they're avatar. Someone to carry out their will, though as I said, more in a servant sense than like, a Kingly diving right sort of way. I also believe in this way that the Pthumerians saw the Hunter's Mark as sacred because of that, because I always got the sense that they more overtly worshipped the Great Ones. So someone having that mark is basically them being chosen by the gods.
    Another point to make, is that the Hunter's Dream was conceived by Gehrman and co.'s encounter with Moon Presence. This means that it didn't exist in the time of the Pthumerians. So back in the day, what effect would the Hunter's Mark have? I think rather than bringing the person to Hunter's Dream being standard fair, that it's something particular to the Great One pulling the strings on all this, most likely Moon Presence, I don't know, I've always been iffy on his role in things.
    I dunno, just food for thought.

      I know this is an old comment but this was also the first thing that came to my mind. I think this ties in beautifully with the hanged man reference that the first hunters got away with slaughtering the fishing hamlet, discovering Kos and its orphan. Leading them to a crossroads of what to to with the information and their sins. (Also hunters are just killers who can get away with everything, even getting approval of the healing church to kill people they THINK is affected by the scourge as given in the item description of the white or black church gear)

    You have very clear diction Redgrave - super cogent, succinct and well-paced. Not sure if you've been informed of this but you are a natural lecturer, and in fact I feel your videos are essentially very well spoken and informed lectures on Bloodborne. Please consider fusing some of your videos together into a lecture series, and actually giving presentations at institutions. And yes, I'm being completely serious. You certainly reach many here through RUclips, but your work does so much to legitimise this medium as a wellspring of and launching-off platform for broader and higher learning - the formless Oedon video comes to mind for this - that it would be a tremendously awesome thing to see you behind a podium in front of art students, or even social psychology students. Please consider it :)

    If you put a scientific spin on the rune being in our head it could mean by being beheaded can sever the connection from dream and only a hunter can sever that connection. Not only that there must be some sort of pact with the moon presence that means whoever kills the dream's host they must take their place. Which is why the moon presence attempts to appoint us as the new host.

    If you notice Miyazaki loves wales and uses a lot of welsh names in his games. If you read Caryll is welsh it's definitely a mans name since double L makes a "th" sound so it's pronounced Caryth. I think Miyazaki did that on purpose to make it even more ambiguous those who read Caryll read it like Carol and make her female while those who read it as Caryth make him male.

    • @profeseurchemical
      @profeseurchemical 4 года назад +1

      the english name caryll comes from old english and old german, but i had a fun time trying to pronounce caryll with a welsh y and a welsh ll, im only an anglophone welshman but im not sure you can end a word with ll in welsh. even if it is "legal" it certainly sounds odd.

    Redgrave I’m at that crossroads now.
    A racing mind can be a blessing or a curse, on one hand leading to great creative potential, on the other an endless cycle of overthinking. I cherish quiet time very much, it’s where I feel the most free, to set a mood and experience it, but as this happens, should it be at the end of a stressful day full of questions, I adopt the tendency to live in overthought, in writing I seek the most profound conclusion to every passing prospect. When I do set out, past the sea of confusion, I often base my happiness around goals, instead of an inward outlook. And when my goals go well, they shift higher until they might crash. When they crash, even if not my fault, I let the flames spread like a sickness to everything else. And I feel like even after coming to clarity, and promising to keep trying until things work, I am at my wits end. Which is really the same place I’ve been all along. I have never been genuinely afraid of my own happiness before. But I am now.
    It just feels fake. It feels like I’m blindly setting myself up again for the same pain when I know better. It feels like to be happy would be ignorant, it would be to betray all the many truths and life lessons I learned of in suffering. In my goal chasing mind, last time I made an effort I told myself, that as long as I knew what I was getting into I couldn’t possibly get hurt, but yet I’ve become so trapped in the same spiraling cycle of what feels like depressive truth to fleeting happy ignorance. Both with unparalleled highs and lows. Even after soaring higher than ever before, fulfilling a self made promise to take from the world in ways I hadn’t tried, I let emotion take the wheel completely. I soared too high into the sun. And it burned just the same. If I’m not strong enough to control my emotions, I’m not worthy of being happy. Because I knew better.
    Even after so many group efforts to sweep it all up, I alone spawned an Icarian midnight. I flew too high and pay for it slowly daily. I only feel like a fool, so self aware and critical that I should’ve known. I did know, just not how. Why’s it always so confusing? I look like a wallowing sorry fool. To her and all the rest who I made worry or made distant from me; I fell from power at my highest point. Hah, and look where we are, the same old fears. I can pretend to be happy for a day, but I will never pretend like what I just wrote, looking back, isn’t an identical story from beginning to end, of another time that I had thought I already figured out. So now I can say:
    I have learned nothing. Just overthought new ways to end up in the same place.
    I just want out. If I could sacrifice my emotional side completely, I might. But they’re just as dangerous to ignore as they are to give into. I never want others to know what it’s like. For me, or for themselves.

    I think the Moon Presence was the one to designate the main character as a Hunter. I only say that because at the beginning of the game after the blood ministration, you hear the Doll say "Ah, you've found yourself a Hunter". The Doll resides in the Hunter's Dream and the Moon Presence is the Great One that perpetuates it.

    I think now that when you mentioned the doll and caryll, that the doll very well could be a great one. I think it's important that she communicates to us first, or rather the messengers, with the "so you've found yourselves a hunter". This could be the utterings of a great one, in a manner of speaking. Maybe only the people who are chosen, spoken to by the great ones, are able to translate their meaning. Which makes Caryll a more important character, because he could have either invented something to bypass this rule, or gathered the attention of the great ones whose runes he "made".

    One current of influence that i reckon is vital in understanding the more esoteric aspects of Bloodborne as well as other souls games is norse mythology; specially when discussing the Caryll runes and the hunter´s mark in particular.
    And among the many myths, Odin receiving the runes while hanging over the Well of Urd from the World Tree Yggdrasil (the hanged man), and becoming iniciated into the mysteries of the Cosmos, in my mind is one of the most telling and profound.
    Great insights mate, cheers!!

    This video is old but I think I'll shoot this anyways.
    At the end you said something that kinda of made this idea click for me, you mention how the marks represents different path's and different choices but in reality there can only be one end regardless of what you choose.
    Now hold on because this is a bit of a stretch but Bloodborne features 3 possible endings, Yharnam Sunrise, Honoring Wishes and Childhood's Beginning all of which enviably end in the same way, regardless of your choice the hunt, the dream, the cycle continues.
    The hunters mark, though taken straight from Berserk is modified to have 3 directions that all lead to a single point at the bottom. Do you think it is possible that the mark itself is foreshadowing the endings and the redundant nature of your choices?

    The esoteric meaning behind tarot is that it descrives the path towards enlightenment, especially in the major arcana. The hanged man is 12, right before 13, death. I often think of it as the pursuit of ego death. Giving up your appearances and stringing yourself upsidown, in the hopes of shaking things up and reaching an epiphany, or ego death and rebirth. Very reminiscent of the goals of the hunters. Tarot also matches the theme of oedon, because the general idea is that the cards are archetypes, or patters that tend to manifest themselves repeatedy in reality in deffert forms. Tarot cards are representations of the ideals of those situations, in the same sense that oedon is the ideal of mercury and its various forms and uses

    Maybe you keep waking up because you dont accept your death and want to try again. Thats why Gehrman says "Accept your death." Maybe only then you can stop the dream. Its kind of like hollowing in dark souls. You know the thory that the player hollowing is like this: When you dont have any motivation to play the game anymore and you quit playing it. You have become hollow. It seems like in Bloodborne, you dont hollow out when you dont have motivation , you get BLOODDRUNK because youve embraced the thrill of the hunt. You were TOO excited!! You got to give up, calm down to stay normal.

    So, Djura, Eileen, Gehrman, and Paarl all drop the bold hunter marks. While it might call for a second addendum as you mentioned in another video, I do not think so. Djura, Eileen, Gehrman, Paarl, and possibly some others may all be hunters. If Paarl was paleblood hunter than him/her dropping them makes complete sense, as Djura was able to leave the dream forever by failing/going against his contract if you believe that is what he is refering to when he kills you.
    Also something I want to mention/speculate about Paarl is something I haven't yet seen anyone else mention. If you advance the game to the point you can kill The One Reborn, there are the three hunters that are waiting for you in the Hyperogen Gaol area. I believe the one using the beast claws may be Paarl after being brought back by the bell ringing women. In your bell video you mention them possibly bringing people from the dead, though those three hunters don't respawn there are also no bell ringers directly in the area to bring them back. The reason I believe it could be Paarl brought back is they seem to be using the corpses and souls/echos of things that were already dead in the area and by this time Paarl is just a darkbeast so his soul is no doubt in the area. As for the other two I am not sure who they are specifically but I think based on their almost natural co-operation it may be that they were/all friends of Archibald or Izzy so they would very used to the way the others fight.
    In my first ever playthrough I died to them only managing to kill the one I believe to be Paarl. However I died to the one that uses the tiny tonitrus as his compatriot had just clipped me as I was dodging away, which at the time both pissed me off and amazed me as I had never actually seen the tiny tonitrus used by anything before.

    Theory - Maybe the element properties of the weapons used is also importing in severing the hunter from the dream?
    Both the scythe and blades of mercy are made of the same element and both seem important to killing Nightmare hunters. Could it be part of the equation? It’s an unearthly element so it would make sense.

    Hi, Redgrave!!! Dude, aren't the Forbidden Woods the place of experimentation for The Choir? Since they are linked to Iosefka's Clinic, and Iosefka's twin is a member of The Choir, the Executioner in that area could be there to pick up all the corpses from the experiments and whatnot. Since the Choir and the School of Mensis are factions of the Healing Church and must have been in communication with one another, maybe they had some sort of arrangement where corpses from Choir experiments were given to the Executioners to take back to Yahar Gul for Micolash's experiments. Hope you are doing well, Redgrave. You are a true legend in the Bloodborne community. Never forget!!!

    Once again great work! Very insightful. The tarot card really blew my mind, honestly. But speaking of insight, I would like to know any theories linking insight to the great ones and the difference between a great one, the blue humanoid creatures, the cosmos and why Iosefka is making the blue humanoid things, as well as how a third cord is created (why is there 4 third cords?). And is it wrong of me to think that the insight counter is actually counting the amount of eyes that line your brain?
    P.S. You did say my name right. Keep up the great stuff man! But only if you want to, don't stress yourself out :) I hope to catch your next video before the DotA event, but release it at whatever time feels right. See you next time!

    It also has a connection to Norse mythology, it says it is an upside down rune, if you put it in the right position it is a lot more similar to the Algis (I think that's how it's spelled) wich links one to Architectural or Divine consciousness, connecting us to a higher play e of existence.
    So if in the right position means us reaching for the skies, in search of something more than us, the divine, the unseen, the next level, some kind of meaning, then the the Hunter's Mark is the opposite, the Great Ones reaching for us, giving us a task and separating us from the others, giving us power, therefore connection established, since it's a 2 way street.

    Tarot cards? Really? That's pretty deep. To be honest, I looked around at an actual runic alphabet and only found it looking similar to Algiz rune which is one of the few runes that is still not settled on the meaning. One of the search results shows it meaning as "elk" or some kind of plant. Reading a bit more I saw that it most likely symbolizes "protection" and was used a "life rune" in more modern occult practices. "Protection" made sense to me as it protects us from death in Yharnam, so I stopped there...

    I'm super late to the game but:
    It's interesting also to think that the Caryll rune for Hunter doesn't use blood, like all Caryll runes, which puts it at odds with the whole blood-heavy "Hunter" profession in the first place (although all covenant runes are smudged red - if it's blood then it's blood that must connect the worlds)
    It's interesting how you "lose" all your echoes when you use the mark, I wonder where that blood is going?

  • @armando8800

    So here is what i think about the pthumerian catacombs. We have a civilization that found the great ones, transcendent beings that are out of our capacity of understanding. They dislike a lot the kin of the cosmos, since they are knockoff great ones but can't kill them directly (the reason i'm not sure). So they see these pthumerian worshipping them and decide to mark them as paleblood hunters. If we look at some of the Kin of the Cosmos, they are all mostly pale colored, orphan of kos is white, amygdala is white, Rom is pale, etc. But the actual great ones are all grey/black colored. So there is this distinction to be had so the great ones marked the pthumerian people with the mark to hunt down the paleblood (kin of the cosmos). Our goal in the game as a paleblood hunter is to seek paleblood, to kill the kin of the cosmos.

    Ok so we basically know the backstory but I am still unsure what was the final point of the hunt. It begins as seeking a cure to the scourge of the beast but then the whole world goes to shit and becomes about Great Ones and all that. I'm not sure how it ties up. Can you explain it in Lehmans terms?
    Keep up the great work.

    These interpretations resonate with me! To me I find the Hunter's Mark to be a sign of fear, the rune seems to convey a sense of perhaps hopelessness, or a dangling creature caught in the grasp of a greater being. Is it possible the Pthumerians were perhaps Demi-Gods weaker than the GreatOnes, whenever you enter the final boss ro of a dungeon, to me, it looks like a gladitorial arena, perhaps Pthumerians were only interested in things such as strength or power...thanks again for the insight!

    Another mistery is who are the knights in the pthumeru chalice dungeons, and why there are always corpses hanged upside down (exactly like the hunters mark) in locations where the armored knights are also present in the dungeons, was it the watchers (servents of the Great ones) who hanged them or was it the knights who hanged the watchers?

    Dude I need more of this. You said leave a comment if you want more on the first episode, so here I go... I want to express my hunger for more Bloodborne videos. Please make more.
    Btw, what actually happens when we die? Is it like... the one time we don't die and make it to the boss and light the lamp, that's actually what happened and all the runs before that were just dreams? Is the "waking world" actually the real world?

    • @Bluk34dewnxt3
      @Bluk34dewnxt3 8 лет назад

      I'd like to get Redgrave's thoughts as well but the way it's been explained to me and from what I've experienced in the game it's like this:
      First off, when you start off the game your consciousness is attached to the Hunter's Dream meaning that whenever your body dies your consciousness lives on and gives you your body back. It has to do with the Old Blood's God-like abilities. Only when Gherman releases you from the dream can you return to Yharnam as a mortal again. An example is Djura who mentions the dream when he kills you but doesn't come back when you kill him meaning that he's no longer a part of the dream.
      The second thing to note, answering your other question, is that the "Waking World" is indeed the world you play in. It's all real minus some areas such as the Nightmare realm. Everything you do in Yharam and it's surrounding areas affects the world such as killing other hunters or bosses. In one ending (sort of a spoiler) you wake up to a Yharnam Sunset meaning you have successfully ended the hunt for the time being. There's a lot of in-game lore explaining it and Redgrave can explain circles around me but that's my take on it.

    • @iWillWakeYouUp
      @iWillWakeYouUp 8 лет назад +1

      Exploding Penguin
      Thanks for the comment. I'm familiar with that interpretation, and I've thought about it like that as well. The thing that bothers me is exactly what you mentioned: The Yharnam Sunrise ending. It kinda implies that it was all just a bad dream, a nightmare. You wake up in Yharnam as if nothing happened, there's no monsters around, and it looks normal. The night of the hunt comes and goes it seems. People in Yharnam reference other nights of the hunt in their dialogue, meaning it's happend countless times before. But if that's true, how can it be that now everything turns to shit? This is an apocalypse-like event, and you tell me this city has been through it countless times? Kinda sketchy if you ask me.

    • @Bluk34dewnxt3
      @Bluk34dewnxt3 8 лет назад +2

      iWillWakeYouUp I rewatched the ending just now to make sure but all we see is a quick glimpse of the city from in front of the clinic where our hunter wakes up. Even in that location while we play we can't see any enemies. It's only after we leave the clinic gates that we run into the first three Yharnamites. We have saved the city for a time but in this particular ending we haven't ended the scourge. There are still beasts in the city that we just don't get to see.
      It does seem odd that this keeps happening over and over but it has to do with the Moon Presence and the Blood Moon. Every night (and probably day too) the beasts roam the streets and hunters slay them but with the Blood Moon and the tearing of the fabric that separates the Hunter's Nightmare and Hunter's Dream from Yharnam all hell breaks loose and we see the type of city that we play through. It only happens once in a while but it's told to us that the normal hunt is ongoing. One example that life goes on and the Blood Moon doesn't come around all that often is with the Orphanage in Upper Cathedral Ward. The Choir seems to have a literal garden of children to farm blood from and with all the caskets in the area they keep getting dead (and live) children. So in between the times that beasts and hunters fight people must have children and do other regular things. It makes me think of Fallout logic: As long as you stay indoors you might not die.

    @redgrave the bold hunters marks are burned on the edges, and the symbol looks black and burned imprint on the paper. now think about this why is it burned. :) and think who gives you it.. hunters from: the old yharnam Eileen and djura curious isn't it. it has to be from old ruined yharnam because its the only item you get from them only, the burns on the paper always looked like too obviously stand out and I think this is the reason. I saw something behind it from day one and it fits so well that I think it was used to leave old yarnam after the carpet bombs and destruction but djuro and eileen never went back to the dream because the both actually had different missions concerning the last hunters alive and hunting them if the go for blood or beasts

      +Robert Fishburne I was considering it. Generally I think video game tattoos - and even clothing, to an extent - are better if they're purposely vague. I have a Metal Gear Solid tattoo, but nothing about it outwardly says "Metal Gear," its actually just two snakes. If I did a Bloodborne tattoo, it'd have to follow the same rules - maybe something involving a moon.
