Great video. I was charged $600 to do a small 4x6 patch years ago. I will be doing this on my own after watching your video. Thank you.
Thanks for watching! Glad you enjoyed it. I started to try to do more how to videos for that very reason. People charge way too much for things so I will be adding more how to style videos so everyone can save some money.
4x6 with saw cuts and hot asphalt properly compacted is worth $600 easy. The most expensive job is one that has to be redone. You'll figure that out later.
I just did this project today at one of our rental properties. I removed all the Asphalt and added some all purpose sand as the base then put down 10 bags of the QAR making sure the edges had sufficient asphalt.
I will seal it in a couple of days.
Thanks for the video.
Awesome! Thanks for watching. I still have the final part to upload which is just sealing. I have a bunch more how to videos coming out soon on a rental property I am working on currently.
Awesome video. 👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
Thank you so much! Thanks for watching!
From my 15 years experience in the construction industry I would advise you to use a wide chisel in the machine and start from the outside working inwards. Maybe also have a hose running softly to stop dust.
Thanks for watching! I did end up using a wider chisel on my next project. I only had smaller ones at the time for this video. Great idea on the dust, I usually do this when cutting concrete but should have done this here also.
Best video nice job like the idea with the box to get the dust 😊👍
Great video and some great comments …very helpful.
Thanks for watching! Lots more videos to come out soon.
Excellent video, I have to go through this this week. Thanks from Columbus Ohio
Thank you so much for watching! I have two other ones that cover cracks and also the sealing as well. If you watch the video at the end it will go to the playlist. Good luck on your project!
Just the shape of the cut it sure look like a coffin. People might wonder who you buried under there. But I might need to do this really soon. Thanks for the video and all the commentaries too.
LOL I never noticed this! And no comment on who is buried under the driveway. shhhh lol Thanks for watching!
Very good video. Thanks.
Nice looking patch. I hope it holds up. Sucks when we spend time and money and products that end up failing. I want to try rapid set but I’m glad to see this so I can compare the two ideas. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks for watching! So far 2 years later it is still holding up. I think cutting out the area truly helps as there is nowhere for the asphalt to push away from. I did see that rapid set but it was a little too expensive for me to try out.
Turned out real nice thanks.
Thanks for watching!
Hey Brian, good video! How long before you can drive on the new patch?
Thanks for watching. I usually wait a full 24 hours and then check after that. Usually if it is really really hot I may give it an extra day to start to really harden.
Great video, thanks for sharing! What sealer did you use around the edges?
Quick Crete brand I used wouldn’t dry. I’m researching what to do now since it’s a high traffic area
Thanks for watching. Did you try adding any sand on top of it at all? I know I used sand when I was tamping down the asphalt and that may help some.
Heat it up. Thats what people say. Use a torch
Fantastic . Thanks
Thank you very much! Lots more videos to come!
Nice job, thank your.
great video. what type of chisel bit did you use on your SDS plus rotary hammer?????
I saw your email but will add the reply here also just in case. Thanks for watching the video. I can not remember between two brands but I have both Milwaukee and Diablo chisel bits. Both will do a great job. Personally I would go with diablo from experience because all of my diablo bits, blades and whatnot have lasted a lot longer. The key is not getting too wide of a bit. 11/2-2 inches is a good size for this project. Too wide and it is tough to get through the asphalt. Brian
I believe this is the diablo chisel I prefer. amzn.to/3y6iLf9 Takes a little longer since it is 11/2 wide but goes right through it.
how long does this cold patch last?
Thanks for watching. So far I am 2 years on the one in the video and doing well. I think if it is properly prepped and compacted well it will last a long time.
great video
just suggestion, you need to add some liquid asphalt to the edges so the edges are waterproof otherwise the patch continues to grow
Thanks for watching. I actually went around it afterwards. I should have added that into the video for sure.
Your supposed to use SS1 or Coalus. However that garbage cold patch is so full of tar you dont need it.
However, if you find any asphalt on the side of the road from a hwy job, or even some old broken asphalt, heat it up with a tiger torch or even a barrel over a fire pit. Way better quality and a permanent fix.
Either heat your tamper or spade with the tiger or keep it oiled with diesel or used motor oil so the hot asphalt does not stick to the tamper.
PS. that so called asphalt patch he's using is garbage. Its all the same size nuggets for city work crews to toss in a hole and allow passing cars to tamp it down. It never really hardens. Plus you cant feather it. You have to do saw cuts. If you get normal asphalt you can rake the larger stones into the middle, heat the edges and have a nice feathered patch without the saw cuts.
Whatever. This guy is doing a fine job for an office worker.
@@tocarules 👌🏻 Thanks 🙏🏻 great information.
@@trickywoo5165 If you do choose to use cold patch, the only brand to use is called Sakrete Asphalt Patch.
It has a mix of stones and its very sandy. Thats important when your feathering the edges.
However theres lots of road work going on that will 100% have piles of left over asphalt thats not compacted and very easy to break apart and reheat.
Carry a shovel and 5 gallon pails in your trunk.
@@tocarules 👌🏻 always have a couple five gallon buckets & a shovel handy, that’s also how I get free rock salt for the coming snow/ice. 😜 Thx again, I definitely needed to know that 👍🏻
Clever
Thanks for watching!
Awesome video explaining this tool . . Thanks!!
Thanks for watching. I will have to check into that as I always added them but never removed them. Let me see if I can figure it out if it would be the same process or if there is anything else involved.
I thought I saw a cold patch threshold ramp to your garage... did you do that?
Thanks for watching! I did do the threshold ramp for the garage. I should have done a video on that as well. The key is building it up in layers. I would add about 2 inches of asphalt and shape it then tamp is a LOT! Then add more layer little by little and keep tamping. The main part you want to truly focus on is where the car or truck tires will be so it does not push out over time. Hoope this helps!
@@BrianWingard dude, thanks for the response!....i just did the project this am but did not tamp in layers lol. Wish I had seen this earlier 😀... hopefully it holds up.... gonna give it about a month to cure
@@bigpun4780 No problem, I usually try to respond quicker but have been so busy on a landscaping project that I have not been on here much. It should still hold up but I just tamp it to really work it in. If you ever have any querstions please hit me up. I do all kinds of projects all the time and would love to share any tips I learned over the years.
@@BrianWingard you rock, man! Thanks!
@@bigpun4780 Thank you! Have a great night!
Thank yoy
Thanks for watching!
Just a blade on angle grinder?
On the angle grinder just a masonary blade yes. This will cut through a lot easier. Thanks for watching!
No heat?
Thanks for watching. My newest video I added heat which will be out soon. You can do it either way though.
Would heating it up using a propane fired brush burner help?
Thanks for watching. Honestly I never tried that but it is a great idea!
you don't need a grinder with a diamond blade all you need is your regular circular saw put a carbide blade for a few bucks & your on your way
Brain you not fishing anymore?, would love to fish in America on a big wild pit, you need to get over hear to the uk 🇬🇧 you would be like a kid in a sweet shop 😂
Been really busy working and just do not have the time right now. There are so many waters here it is really surprising. Eventually I will get back out fishing.
Rapid Set is easier
And 5 months later it’s still soft!
Thanks for watching. If it is soft then it was not packed enough. Usually in a few days it is near as solid as the other asphalt and I have been driving over this with no issues. Cutting out the hole prevents it from spreading so it stays solid.
Qpr does not get hard per my own install knowledge and the companies notification it’s intended to stay soft it even says it in the bag
@@richard23stgermainfacts
@@richard23stgermain how “hard” does asphalt get really..”
@Steven - What makes it hard?
Wife says. Looks like a coffin, I said mother in law 😀
LOL!
Just a suggestion is a thing called fast forward 2x 3x 4x 5x all you need to do is explain and then speed up when you're working We don't need to watch 40 minutes of something that can be compressed to 5 minutes...
Thanks for watching. Actually I found most people looking up how to videos have never done it before so even though the video is long viewers often watch any particular section they are unsure of how to do and can watch a majority of the process. Most people who have general knowledge of the process just skip through. Its easier to have the extra video than not so no one is left guessing like most quick videos that do not show it all and explain it quick.
