In this line and wash drawing (rural sketching) and painting tutorial I visit the iconic hill Mam Tor in the Peak District National Park.

Line and Wash is a very accessible drawing style and great for beginners. Sketching rural landscapes can be tough and there are a lots of decisions to make about what to draw and what to leave out. Some of story will be told by the linework and some of it by the watercolour stage. Sometimes its only by showing the whole process that you get a understanding of an artist process. That said, there is no right or wrong way to approach art and it is important to develop your own language.

Rural Sketching requires minimal equipment and therefore is a very accessible for newbies. It is essentially not only a reflection of the landscape but also what it means to be within the fabric of it. Urban Sketching is fun and a busy city street has a lovely buzz but it can also be intimidating and a hassle. Escaping to do rural sketching in the countryside is generally more peaceful and for some time out and relaxation time always pretty effective.

Doug, for real. I kid you not. You are my absolutely favorite. I may just randomly click on what comes up, but you’re it. It’s funny isn’t it? We watch you and hear about you, and your beautiful daughter and her paint brush! You hit the nail on the head when you described the abundance of priceless moments that makes your heart melt & leap & however else you described it.
You know how much I LOVEEEE your tutorials. I’m a big ‘quality time’ person. Always have been. During my pregnancy, 15 years ago, it was discovered I was born with a malrotation and pregnancy induced gangrene in my flip flopped GI anatomy. Our son is a full of life warrior like his mama. 💃🏻 In an instant, went from being able to express, and immensely enjoy & thrive with all of life’s demands. I had so much love & life I HAD to get it out. A lot’s changed physically but not mentally. It’s been 15 years of craziness but I’m still me. My passion and creativity found new ways to burst forth and remain true to my “I’ve already been so close to death disabled and on US disability. I’m doing things backwards. I’m just getting younger. Visions and plans haven’t been fulfilled like before. I’ve had many complexities and surgeries & the only thing that’s changed is my need for medical care. Before I could create from my heart freeely & kick butt doing it (& by that I mean being my playful childlike-not childish-self).
I’ve turned to art and loved it. Only thing missing a lot (especially the last few years) has been people, as I’ve had more rare and rare complexities.
I created for others only for years, even made great headway on a children’s book for those gems in the hospital. I’d love it to be done but such a gem from the heart, to them, is not something you just throw together. I’d rather spend time with the kiddos.
Boy do I cherish those who agree & me as I do - not my circumstances.
So I cherish those I’m drawn to on TV. They’re always those I’d hang out with.
That’s how it is with you. You’re perfect and great at being you. I love genuine transparency & keeping it real. And you have all of it.
I have been in the hospital in America’s capitalnap haven’t been able to watch all your videos. Oh I will!
You may have answered this already but, I have your supplies list/info on what supplies you use. But, as I like to do with those who I feel I’ve danced alongside (like in Wizard of Oz) as part of my journey…I like to do something that celebrates the gift of their known or unknowing gift. I know you use the Opis 88 with thin and then some pen with a fude. Can you tell me exactly what your Opis 88 pen & nib is? I’ve been looking everywhere but I’m just not putting it together. A thin nib isi throwing me off. So if you don’t mind, do tell. That’s my Christmas gift I’d like from Santa or my husband. Whoever does it first. 😉

Wow it sounds like you've had a tough and event filled life. I guess you've had to develop lots of creative ways of coping when times are hard. I admire your strength and creativity. My Opus 88 pen is an Extra Fine nib and the pen is a Korolo demonstrator. It's a good pen ut it is very big and wouldn't suit all people.

It reminds me of Hansel & Gretel. We both leave a trail. Only theirs is to help them find their way back home (at least I think that’s how it went) & I’m unintentionally leaving a trail of partial sentences & paragraphs. I’m glad you were able to somehow see through it. 😁

Exactly! Sometimes we get a bit caught up in the process and need a bit of distance. Glad it's not just me that feels this way. 🤣
I really enjoyed your approach to perspective using color and line work. I tend to use to consistent a line throughout the entire sketch. That is something I have to really think about when drawing. Line width or boldness does tell its own story. Thank you!

I really like the end result and will download the image later using your link, to have a go. Moonglow looks an interesting colour, and you make skies look so easy, but are my particular nemesis.
HI Gail . I need to do some more tutorials on skies as I know I struggled with them for years. There is defiantly easy and effective tips I could share.
Walked that path between Lose Hill and Mam Tor many a time in my younger days before it was paved in places. Really miss these hills since I moved from South Yorkshire to the weirdly flat fens around Peterborough Cambridgeshire. So even a fairly loose ink and wash can trigger very happy memories🙏
It is a wonderful part of the Peak District though it gets a little too busy on some days. I was lucky enough to grow up in and around the North York Moors where most walks you'd have to yourself. Spoiled I guess. There are some cracking bits of the fens but some parts are pretty open. Still plenty of nice things to draw I expect.
Love the videos and tutorials, just starting to learn about line and wash. Do you always put out fresh paint on your pallete because they always look good. Thanks
Usually I leave my palette mucky as I like the mixes and chaos. The problem is for the vids it's hard to see what and how I'm mixing unless the palette is clean to start with. I do hate washing good paint down the drain. 🤣
