  • Welcome to a demonstration of Urban Sketching for Beginners. This simple step by step demonstration allows you just to see the process I use or, ideally, down load the reference material and have a sketch along with me.

Beginning your urban sketching journey can be intimidating but so much fun. Even though the learning curve is steep its the most fun.
There is plenty of help for you here in my Urban Sketching Playlist: • Urban Sketching
Urban Sketching requires minimal equipment and therefore is a very accessible for newbies. It is essentially not only a reflection of your landscape but also what it means to be within the fabric of it. You can include the people, the street furniture and interpret those details any way you want. The sketchbook is a playground. It can also be a very sociable art form with urban sketching groups in most cities.

Thanks Janet. This content is actually my most usefull I think but YT doesn't seem to like it as much as faster paced stuff. I think in future I'll try and do a mix of the two. The long form full drawing and snappier vids.

Thank you for this excellent demonstration! One of my weak points is proportions -- i foolishly think i can eyeball them and my eyes always play tricks in me. We have a Derby here in Connecticut with lots of old buildings, and as soon as they finish the big road reconstruction project i will be out there to use what i learned here

That sounds fabulous. Old building always make for great sketches. I always find it fascinating how in the USA for many places share the same name as in Britian. Especially when in Britain they are tiny town or villages and in the US they are big cities. Keep playing and having fun and thanks for you comment. Much appreciated 🙏

I did the pencils sketch then penned it & unfortunately some of my ink smudged on adding watercolour. But, it turned out okish. It was in a sketchbook & the paper was rather smooth. Not ideal. Hope I’ve learnt something! Thanks

That all sounds like very useful process to me. Any drawing where you learn is a gift. I always learn more from mishaps and messes than triumphs. If your using waterproof ink it does need a dry before watercolour. I normally give it a 1 min blast with a Hairdryer. Using smooth or rough paper can make huge differences to a piece. I am planning a video on this soon. 👍👍
