Sonic CD is my favorite, with Sonic 3 being in close second. I just love how fluid and smooth the characters control in those games. Removing the air lock makes a world of a difference in terms of the freedom of movement. That's one of my issues with Sonic 1 and 2 in terms of not being able to control the characters when they jump out of a roll or a spin dash.
I was disappointed that Sonic 3&K didn't keep the S&K theme and stuck to the original S3 theme. Another nitpick is how they changed the invincibility theme to the lame Sonic 4 version
I personally think the collection is a mixed bag. While I enjoyed all of the games, along with mission, mirror and story mode, there were so many missed opportunities in terms of content and options. The abundance of glitches is especially an issue, though I've ran into very few of them on the Switch version. I also wish that there was an option to play Classic mode with the 16:9 wide-screen presentation instead of strictly having it be 4:3 for the sake of it being "retro". Disabling the drop dash and having the limited lives system are further locked within Classic mode while you're not able to toggle them on/off in Anniversary mode. There should've been an option to toggle on/off the drop dash and limited lives system for both Anniversary and Classic mode. It would've also been nice to be able turn off the air lock in Sonic 1 and 2, where you can't change Sonic's direction once you jump out of a roll or a spin dash. The air lock problem ends up hindering that fluidity and freedom of movement in Sonic's controls, which is what the drop dash also depends on in terms of making Sonic smooth to control. A lot of my issues with the compilation simply boil down to it not giving the player enough options or customization. If SEGA really wanted this collection to be the definitive way to play the classics, they should've capitalized on taking what people liked about Sonic 1 Forever, Sonic 2 Absolute and Sonic 3 A.I.R. and incorporating all of their improvements and customization options into Origins.
I haven’t played this collection, the reason why is the price and also I just don’t like Sonic.T.H.1, C.D and 2 all that much. I might buy when stuff like glitche’s are officially patched. If I buy, I’d only do it for Sonic.T.H.3&K.
A quick comment on the S3&K music: IceCap, Carnival Night, and Launch Base aren't actually out of key. Instead, they've been transposed down (each pitch has been lowered by a certain amount, which is constant for all pitches). Essentially, they'e been shifted to lower key signatures. So even though those tracks SOUND out of key, they're actually in different keys entirely while still being 100% in tune. It doesn't make the tracks more enjoyable if you don't like them to begin with, but it's a minor thing I thought should be mentioned. Sonic 1, 2 and CD use a basic implementation of dropdash mechanic. Set a flag, if flag is set; make Sonic instantly spindash on the ground. The same concept the Sonic 3 prototype used. Sonic 3 and Knuckles is using the actual Mania dropdash code since it was written by Stealth and he has access to it. I think Sega just got their random dev to make something "close enough" due to not having the real dropdash code at hand.
Fun fact: the drop dash for Sonic 1 and 2 is literally just a super quick spin dash, where as the drop dash in Sonic 3, (and I think Sonic CD too) are the real deal (you can even see the spin dash when going frame by frame)
No, CD’s drop dash just doesn’t have the roll lock, it’s still a super quick spin dash, 3 and knuckles is the only that is like Mania, which is pretty obvious
They will never fix origins. Please let me be wrong on this one I want the game fixed maybe not as much as everyone else but after colors ultimate I don't think they'll let stealth or even the team themselves ever fix origins because that's how fucking little I trust SEGA.

The lack of the MJ sonic 3 music is the biggest issue for me, I wish they’d fix the issue that way they could put that in the game or at least not mess up the prototype music. Plus the pixels being blurry, the sonic 3 sound being muffled, tails constantly jumping, etc is all annoying
The only reason I can think of as to why CD’s ending is like this is because when you play CD with the US soundtrack… there are no sound effects so they wanted to make them consistent…
I had my fun with the collection, but for CD and 3K, I’ll just stick to the 2011 Steam version and Sonic 3 A.I.R. . One major issue I have with CD that you didn’t point out is that unlike the 2011 version, the full tracks aren’t in the game. The tracks just reset.
The physics are also not as solid. I mean it's good for the mostbpart. But certain sections were made with the old physics in mind and don't work as well

Kinda wish you had talked about the biggest reason I personally didn't buy it... Denuvo. They stuffed that crap in there and alot of people are complaining about the usual frame drops and all that kinda good stuff for a game based on speed. I was 100% leery when Sonic Team kinda just... took Chris's retro engine, and pushed him out of his passion project. Wait WHAT!? No save feature!? That was how I got to beat Sonic 2's special stages and now it's gone? Anyways, I am not very excited for Sonic Origins. It's anotherthousands of ways to re-introducing the classic games and I'm getting sick of it. I already have Ultimate Collection and even if they aren't remastered from the ground up, at least I got more games, more stuff to unlock and can actually leave where I started thanks to saves. And if Sega can't properly release these games (again), then they seriously need quality insurance. Sonic deserves better.
*@CliffTurbo* Actually, there is a save feature and Origins auto-saves your progress in a game when you reach a checkpoint. Also, there's the coin system in Anniversary mode, which enables you to restart a special stage at the price of 1 coin every time you fail it.
Good video, i'm glad you are having a better time with the game than I did. Played Sonic 3, then stopped halfway through 2. Until the game is patched I don't see myself recommending it to anybody besides someone who wants everything in one package. While A.I.R is a bit iffy due to the Genesis rom no longer being available on steam. You can still legally purchase 1,2, and CD the android app store by removing the ads (can be done without, but it supports SEGA), then chuck them into the decompilations for a substantially better experience, especially if you use heavily modded variants like Sonic 1 Forever/2 Absolute. This only applies to PC/Homebrew console ports, but still is an option. I wanted to like this collection, but the issues it has and the fact SEGA rushed this to market before it was ready, soured my opinion on it greatly.
Please just play Sonic 1 forever,Sonic 2 absolute,Sonic CD restored and Sonic 3 A.I.R just play it because its fun and great way to play the classic genesis game
What sucks about the music is that G Spindash (the guy who remastered the music for Sonic 3 AIR) reached out to Sega to work on the music, but they declined.
Yea I think he's not a fan of the proto credits theme, which is a shame because he didn't even show the good parts of the music. Yes the beginning is a mixed bag but once the Diamond Dust instruments kick in, it becomes really good.
21:37 this was also in the original mobile remaster. It's probably just to make the game easier since back then Sonic 2's special stages were known as the hardest of the original 4.
I think the reason why the drop dash doesn't have the same level of boost in 1, 2 and CD is because it isn't a true drop dash. If you look closely (and slow down the footage) you can see that when Sonic lands he is stood for one frame, then does a level one spindash for one frame.
It's like SEGA are trolling us at this point. I can picture the meeting: "What haven't we fucked up yet?" "Music?" "Yeah, that'll do. Let's fuck that up BIG time!"
Not sure why they screw up the drop dash in this collection with Sonic 1 & 2. The drop dash works smoothly in the M2 remastered (Sega Ages versions) of Sonic 1 & 2 for Switch.
Supposedly the Remade prototype tracks used an earlier version, which explains why they feel empty and are so inconsistent with the Prototype that was discovered by the public
Which they used the pc versions. And I think those are the earlier versions. When those tracks were converted the genesis back in 1993, the composers decided to enhance some parts of the music too. Making them have more punch or seem more complete.
Actually here in my region the japanese sonic cd ost is the default one Maybe because my version seems to put the european setting for default, like the game covers
Great review and i enjoy all your reviews. Just some constructive criticism. 80% of your sentences end as if youre asking a question even when youre just talking in statements. It can get a bit much after awhile. You should be more firm in your statements. Origins is a good package with some flaws. I do think they are the best offical way to play these games. And being in one convienent package is nice. This is what i will most likely be using 100% of the time to play these games just bc its easier than hooking my pc up to my TV to play Sonic 3 A.I.R. or something. The glitches have mostly been fixed and Amy being in the game now is a really cute addition i love using her and her Hammer Drop dash thing. They did drop the ball a little on release but i feel with Origins Plus its certainly a good collection worth the money and time of any sonic fan
Because there are both the original & a new bleu spheres, technicly from that alone origins is the biggest sonic game & collection if not the biggest game off all time (the original already has over 170 million levels & they remixed it now asumingly having over 300 million levels, even the 2 bleu spheres modes combined makes it already the biggest game of all time, well... technicly
Meh i'm okay with the carnival night, ice cap & launch base in origins, i absolutly love the this super & hyper sonic theme though, also for some reason in classic & mirror mode on the super sonic ending the sky sanctuary theme was playing, though both endings in anniversary mode & the treu ending in played the prototype music, so i guess it's random Which ending theme plays
$40+ is too much for me. I could overlook the price tag, if the game was physical, allowed more customization, actually tailored all 4 games 100% to console controls (drop dash lock was probably because Sonic, and Sonic 2 are their mobile counterparts), and contained the original music. Additionally, I think including the Game Gear titles, and/or behind-the-scenes mini documentaries on the included games would have been cool. I would have been fine with just the main issues being addressed.
It's sad that the music for 3 is lost to time now cause game publishers don't care enough about music. And why the hell do the music producers care if Sega use MJ's music
Yeah, sega got a little lazy on CD like all they to add for knuckles are a spinning animation & special stage sprites, also you can respawn tails by letting him fly for a bit, also also i think keeping the rings after a special stage is intentional, though it shouldn't be in classic mode
Wow! I paid 45 dollars to get worse versions of games I could have instead put a simple hour into setting up as a decompilation or home brew app! I totally couldn’t just connect a controller to my phone or PC and get the same console experience! No, Sonic Origins is the best!
I like your videos. I agree with most of what you've said. I do respectfully disagree with one point though. While the cutscenes are pretty, Ian Flynn doesn't know his butt from a hole in the ground. It doesn't show with stuff this simple, but when he tries to write something with meat on its bones, it's so bad.
The difference between funny comedic faces and forced meme faces is significant. The Mania shorts lack proper comedic timing, calling them “meme faces” is hardly inaccurate considering how Sonic has been milking that for years.
I really hope they fix the save files , specially sonic 2. sonic 2 is my favorite classic game from the 4, and it stinks that i cant play as super sonic anymore in my switch!
This game was delayed (originally coming out before sonic movie 2) (as far as i know) & had direct fan-development involved, yet while it is pretty good, It's not what it should be for an anniversary game, someone told me not to worry about it (i was worried because of colo(u)rs ultimate) well it's not a bad, but for fuck sake, it still needs patches, like at this rate, they should let hired fans take 100% control over the gaming side for the rest of this console gen + the whole next 1 so they can see what fans do right & can take major inspiration from it, either that or frontiers is the last chance, anyway with all this telling me not to worry when i am worried about a sonic game will never work on me again (i love origins but still can't ignore the many flaws)
While I enjoy having a collection of the 3 originals with some updated features... Its definitely a mixed bag of bugs, glitches, poorly thought out 'extra' content, and shows how little the Mania team actually had control over the final product with the difference in quality/polish between that and this. Between the quality issues of the final package and the whole 'DLC/pre-order' thing, it was such a blaring example of how out of touch the main SEGA team is with their own games at this point.
8:00 Nonono, stop right there. They should be emulated 100%, especially when people actually want those roms for other stuff. Like running the games through S3AIR or Sonic 2 Community's Edition. As is there's no legal way to get the rom versions of these games and it's just terrible for the romhack scene.
17:15 "It completely destroys the original feel of them (the cutscenes) in a way". I suggest you check out the Sonic Jam ver. instead. That's the definitive version as it matches the beat of the song to the animation far better than the original ver. that leads into the ending credits. Also, I think we all know why the music was sped up in the Origins cutscenes, right? Or are we just pretending to be idiots here? The framerate on Origins is just faster than that of the one from Sega CD, that's all.
Such dumb mistakes they made with this but I tend to look on the funny side to things rather than dwell. That being said I really hope the issues addressed here get fixed.
SEGA/Sonic Team cause lots of bugs, bad marking due to rushing and every time they repeat history (more likely rushing new game during development) they’re doom to fail Despite Headcannon remastered version Sonic 3 & Knuckles they have so much problems thank to SEGA rushing it instead of delaying They should have let Tee Lopes to do his version of S3&K OST🤔

I do wish this Sonic.T.H.3&K would be released on mobile.
Not sure why they screw up the drop dash in this collection with Sonic 1 & 2. The drop dash works smoothly in the M2 remastered (Sega Ages versions) of Sonic 1 & 2 for Switch.
When you do origins story mode the us soundtrack from cd is always there and you cant change it
Outside the music mods and recommendations, I'd recommend listening to John Tay's reworkings of the prototype tracks
Never played Sonic Origins but I did enjoy the animated cutscenes. Sucks that Amy isn’t playable, she was rather unique in Sonic Advance.
Actually here in my region the japanese sonic cd ost is the default one
Maybe because my version seems to put the european setting for default, like the game covers
There's also a glitch in sonic 3&k where the game takes away your chaos and super emeralds.
It’s not a retcon. They didn’t make Sonic talk in Sonic CD in origins because Sega didn’t care to put the lines in.
I like the cat music.
You forgot about flying battery zone come after carnival night zone😒 and it isn't in origins
I really enjoy your content
Ay I'm A New Sub!
You can play along with tails' little game by making tails fly I. Sonic 2. It will either. Respawn him or fly him back into the screen
Because there are both the original & a new bleu spheres, technicly from that alone origins is the biggest sonic game & collection if not the biggest game off all time (the original already has over 170 million levels & they remixed it now asumingly having over 300 million levels, even the 2 bleu spheres modes combined makes it already the biggest game of all time, well... technicly
6:38 See what ya did there, you can't fool me!! xd
As for Origins, this was a great review. However, $40?!?! Yea, no thank you Sega.
If you use debug mode you can literally get infinite coins, and I love it
Yeah, sega got a little lazy on CD like all they to add for knuckles are a spinning animation & special stage sprites, also you can respawn tails by letting him fly for a bit, also also i think keeping the rings after a special stage is intentional, though it shouldn't be in classic mode
25:36 personally the fact they are off key is the one part that's genuinely better then the prototypes for me, but the actual instrumentation is shit
FINNALY I WANTED THE WHITEHEADS PORTS ON PLATFORMS OTHER THEN PHONES YES!!! No more sketchy annoying Bluestacks or playing Inferno versions.
Wow! I paid 45 dollars to get worse versions of games I could have instead put a simple hour into setting up as a decompilation or home brew app! I totally couldn’t just connect a controller to my phone or PC and get the same console experience! No, Sonic Origins is the best!
@@ele.mentalboi9562 oh it'll be time to have ship & a 🦜🏴☠️
I bet Yuji Naka didn't comment on insider trading as much as the sound track 🤦
I think it's alright, but definitely need some fixing before this could be considered "the definitive versions" of these games
First. (Now to actually watch)
Makes me annoyed that Origins Plus in Japan was 30 USD while in the West it was 40 USD.
Tails bug got fixed
It would be so cool if they ported the remaster of sonic 3 and knuckles to mobile now they sorted the legal issues with Michael Jackson
making your own soft using what you’ve learned.
I feel like the Sega Ages Drop Dash is the one they used here in 1 and 2 to be honest. But... I think it sucks in 1 2 & CD
Sonic 1 Sonic 3 and knuckles and Sonic 2
bro posted the vid in the games steam community and i watched it...
The real question is: worth the 40 dollars price tag?
1995 pc version of cd had less wack collision detection also 4:3 is stupid anyway
First comment get pwned David
Such dumb mistakes they made with this but I tend to look on the funny side to things rather than dwell. That being said I really hope the issues addressed here get fixed.
no its not worth the wait because sonic 3 doesn't have michael jackson music
SEGA/Sonic Team cause lots of bugs, bad marking due to rushing and every time they repeat history (more likely rushing new game during development) they’re doom to fail
Despite Headcannon remastered version Sonic 3 & Knuckles they have so much problems thank to SEGA rushing it instead of delaying
They should have let Tee Lopes to do his version of S3&K OST🤔
I hate the new soundtrack of s3&k from the 3 zones I want the original soundtrack
