This review is basically how I feel for this game to be honest! So this is a great review! So one thing: yeah the shooter stage has nothing to do with the ice stage, but it was pretty much just to be served as a "Throwback to Sega History" stage, which this deep cut is even crazier: Fantasy Zone starred the character Opa Opa whose design somewhat inspired the head/outline of Fang the Hunter!
It saddens me that Sega mascots that predate Sonic have been fading into obscurity. I love Fantasy Zone and I wish more games were made for it. And while I don't care much for Alex Kidd, trying something new with the character would be really fun to see.
Fantastic and well-paced review, Cooper! You always bring your personality to the table and share your passion - love it. I'm also very partial to Superstars overall. It's not perfect, but damn does it get so much right. I'll be replaying this one just as often as CD, 3&K, and Mania for years to come.
Ian actually confirmed that "The End" in Egg Fortress Zone isn't actually The End. It's just one of the moons orbiting Sonic's Earth. Which... is oddly the first time I'm hearing about Sonic's Earth having multiple Moons.
@@thecoolbroscoolman4672 Maybe? Iizuka tried to say a while back that we simply happen to see the moon's other, non-damaged half whenever it's since been in view. So something presumably rotated the moon so it's other side is facing the Earth and we just happen to always be in the exact right position to only ever see that half of the moon whenever we can see it. Clearly the advent of 'multiple moons' is a relatively recent decision, but at the very least it can give some definitive closure on that matter.
Pretty good review! Just want to point out how funny "screw the introduction, let's get to the game" sounds when you're already seven minutes into the video.
This game is... Good! But it could've been better. It feels rushed in several areas (story, music and multiplayer being the main culprits) and has some weird difficulty spikes, but it has a strong personality and a lot of great ideas. There's a lot of potential for a sequel that irons out the flaws, this is already arzest's best game and they can only go up from here!
In my opinion its like a 1st game in a video game series it ha's good elements and ideas that can be expanded and better in the mext game I myself got some good ideas
Yeah Sega got some great ideas but they need to 1. Make the gimmicks feel natrual to the level the same way Mania did it 2. Make the soundtrack sound more modern and again have the same focus as mania 3. Take advantage of it being 2.5 make some 3d advantages like in Sonic Generations but better 4. Make better bosses and more exitment overall Sonic Cd made a good metal sonic boss fight and good atmosphere around it a new 2.5 d sonic game has the potential to perfect it I also find Superstars to not introduce Fang like they could Fang is a cool concept but they didn't introduce him that good at all in my opinion there are alot more thst I could write but yeah
Huge Trip's story rant incomming: I really enjoy this game, but I feel that the level designers knew how to make fun levels (such like bridge island and speed jungle) but can't find a good middle ground when it comes to difficulty and fun together, Seriously. Still playing Trip's story as of now, heard how hard it was and thought that It would be fun levels of hard, only to see spikes put in specific areas to fumble yourself. The egg robos are awfully placed, I'd be climbing a wall with Trip only to get blasted through that wall by a egg robo who I didn't see offscreen. And oh god the enemy spam, I hate spikeballs now, I hated how they were the enemy you had to go through in cyber station as the squid forms because I'd be blasting through just to get hurt from them, only to see there would be millions of them in Trip's story When I beat Trip's Story, Im not going to touch it again unless I feel ballsy enough.
Yeah, I really enjoyed the base game but I was frustrated with some of the stages in Trips story, the true final boss I’m still trying to beat but it’s pretty cool and I like the boss theme. 😅😊
7:18 I think there's some confusion Tyson hesse didn't direct the animated cutscenes, they were still done my Toshihiko Masuda and telecom Animations he did direct the prologue Short but his involvement ends there
I love this game, I'm not in the late stage on Trip's adventure yet, but I genuinely feel I have to get better at this game to beat it, and nonmatter how much I might get frustrated, the challenge is just what I love, And the fact that you have to earn your speed and earn your hit on the bosses, they aren't just presented to you at any point, and I think the experience of the boss fights are immersive, creative, and present a lot to do, even if you aren't directly hitting the boss at any point. It's very much like Sega's arcade era around the time of the Sega Saturn, where games were not too long, not too deep, nice and challenging, and gameplay oriented. As in you don't just hold the forward button and watch the camera pan around and go nuts.
The shoot em' up boss fight in Frozen Base Zone is a reference to Fantasy Zone, a game franchise that predates Sonic and even Alex Kidd. I really love that franchise and I do recommend you give it a try someday. (If you do, try to play the Fantasy Zone 2 remake as your first one for your mental health's sake)
I heard much bad about this I thought I'd hate it. Bought it half off, being very skeptical..... and I friggin' LOVE it. It brings back that feeling of joy of playing the Genesis games the first time. Yeah, this game is flawed. So are those. They're still revered. I think this suffered from being released so close to Wonder. But the negative reviews in the fan base still baffle me. It's got about the same review scores as Frontiers, but that one is adored, and I really don't get that. Frontiers feels like a game engine demo sold as a full game, and locks progression behind minigames that have nothing to do with what's appealing about the engine. I got to the point where you had to herd the little goobers in a Knuckles level and just put it down because I was so frustrated that it was even asking this of me to progress in a Sonic game. Superstars, on the other hand, feels like pure joy. I think this one will age like wine, and Frontiers will age like milk. We'll see, but in the meantime, those who stayed away ought to pick this one up when it's on sale. I think they'll be surprised how much they'll enjoy it. Hopefully, the reception to this won't mean it's too long before we see the next 2D adventure.
Oh yeah, Tails Doll counts and the Golden Badnik for Pinball Carnival. Each zone has one, and when defeated, they give you 20 or so medals (?). You have to collect one, and finish the stage without dying for it to count. Dunno that was mentioned or not (it’s a long vid), but I thought it was neat.
My only issue with the bosses in this game is that the invisibility window is way too long, and worst, not clear. It doesn't end when the boss stop flashing, which is really weird because you have to guess when you can attack the boss again. Other then that, I liked the bosses in the game, even the very long and hard one. And the soundtrack is great I find. Yes there are better songs then others (as is the case in all Sonic games), but it's not a deal breaker in any mean. They are all good songs I found. Better than the new songs from origins for sure. Also, I had to subscribe to you channel because you mentioned Uniracers. I just had.
Fang in Trip's Story and Last Story are hot steaming garbage for this. Not only they drag on for ages but they have an annoyingly short window to attack them verus the long wait time to attack again. Not helped by the use of instakill moves and the Last Story boss having an infuriating strong case of RNG involved regarding the ring spawns. Both having no checkpoints between phases which really makes them unpleasant to slog through on top of the awful pacing of the fights. They singlehandedly destroyed my enjoyment of Superstars just for being so badly designed. I knew they were bad going into them but didn't think they were that *bad* until I fought them. I won't remember Bridge Island Zone, I'll remember the amount of times I cried bull at Last Story because of stingy rings and the boss casually cancelling the ring spawns from friends.
5:00 I'm pretty sure the existence of a brand new 2D Sonic game was the worst kept secret ever but what caught me off guard that it was a classic game I thought it was going to be a modern game with all the leaks but I guess the word play is a modern classic
Things I liked: the graphics (I love this games art style), playing as sonic, tails knuckles and Amy and the level design Things I don’t like: Trip’s story, all the music Jun recorded and THOSE FUCKING BOSS FIGHTS 😂😂
I like Superstars more than Mania. I love the levels, I like that the bosses that are actually a challenge and can't be bodied in 2 seconds flat, and I like the playable characters. Overall, I think it's great and I don’t get the hate for it.
To me, the Eggman final boss was actually the best boss in the game. Yes it is a derivative design and somewhat copies Sonic&Knuckles but I expect a challenge. Speaking of, Sonic&Knuckles offers a checkpoint and another one if you go into Doomsday, so it’s pretty stupid that Superstars can’t do that.
Great video! You have pretty good points honestly. There are a lot of parts that i wouldn't agree since i feel like you haven't gotten very deep into it. This game is quite underrated

Sky temple stole the show for me. My favorite soundtrack (even with the genesis drum snare), aestethic and level design... Lovely all around
the skins. I love alternate costumes in games. I just wish there were more of them
