The Super Mario Bros. Movie was really amazing! Nintendo and Illumination really pulled this off! I loved everything about this movie I don’t know why critics hated it but I loved it and as a Mario fan I’m glad that I saw this
It has a 56% and critics don't hate it. 50% means a 5/10 so they just thought the movie was average.

Super Mario Bros is going to have the biggest opening for any animated film ever, not just Illumination
146 million. Really good numbers, really good film. But you were wrong.

It's always really bugged me how happy the Grinch is in the movie. His change of heart at the end has no impact because he's smiling and making jokes throughout the entire film. Whenever Christmas comes around, I always choose the original cartoon because the change of heart is so authentic.

You can tell Nintendo had a hand in every single element of the Mario movie as although it had a few illumination characteristics, it was the best versions of it. Their normal schtick is heavily held back and done sparingly
Tbh, I actually forgot it was Illumination like 95% of the film because of how more Nintendo it felt. That's a good thing cuz literally 90% Illumination movies are ass

Edit: For the record, in my opinion, at least, I've never really hated Illumination. The majority of their films are kinda guilty pleasures for me outside of my top 3 😁
For me, Super Mario bros is my favourite. That movie was incredible and beautiful. I loved it so much, it was so good. And I’m a big Mario fan. The Mario games were part of my childhood and I grew up with them. So the movie was very special and important to me. I need to watch it a second time

How Mario has 56% critics on rotten tomatoes baffles me. Nonetheless doesn’t matter because i had a fun time knowing the references and theme songs thrown in, and looking forward to a sequel and hoping to see wario and waluigi.

@@_baconboy_ i am aware that the percentage means how many of the critics recommend the movie but its still a ridiculously low percentage for a movie that’s pretty good when thor 4 has a higher percentage
The Movie is making so much bank.
It's not baffling, when they try to turn A GAME, book or any IP into a MOVIE, people and movie studios need to realize that it's going to be criticized/reviewed by critics based on how it's made/translates into a MOVIE (story, character arcs, screenplay...etc) and not how many "easter eggs"/game references/fan service they can pack into it.
It has a 56% because it’s super mid

I saw minions in theaters with my sisters when it came out so I have a lot of nostalgia for minions the movie. I still think that it’s really good.
For my top 5
1. Mario, it was everything I hoped it'd be, gave characters personalities, developed mario and peachs relationship, and showed mario and luigi being wholesome brothers, amazing
2. Despicable Me, childhood classic with a great story of a villan changing his ways
3. Sing 2, amazing story of a group of people with a dream and they make it come true
4. Sing, similar to sing 2, showing a bunch of characters doing what they love with a good story
5. Rise of Gru, funny story of a kid trying to become a villan with his little minions
3. The Lorax 8.7/10 (no explanation here, just something I enjoyed)
2. Despicable me 9/10(1st one was solid and introduced my favorite character in the entire series, Vector)
1. The Super Mario Bros. Movie 9.8/10 (Literally everything about this movie is fantastic except for a few pacing issues and Luigi's contribution to the movie but other than that, best Illumination movie by far)

@@elijahpeless6641 awesome 👍 glad to hear you’re enjoying it. I forgot to say but if you’re watching the anime, the anime never adapted the final arc of Slam Dunk. To see it you may have to read the manga or wait for the film whenever it releases in the U.S. (assuming you’re from the U.S. lmaoo)
I also enjoyed Mario, and it's my favorite movie of the year as of right now. But I haven't seen John Wick 😕 (which seems like it's good 🤔)

Wow. Sean really rips apart Minions here. That movie, along with Cars 2 and Attack of the Clones, WAS my childhood. (I had weird taste)
The prequels, Cars 2 and the Lorax are all part of my childhood and they’re still guilty pleasures of mine. Guess we both had weird taste as children lmaoo

Me too. I like The Grinch. The Jim Carrey film is unbearable to me and so disrespectful to Dr. Seuss IMO. The animation is colorful and gets you in the spirit of the Holidays. I like the characters he's made to his character because it's trying to be his own. IMO, it doesn't miss the message of the story. Underrated IMO.
Thanks for showing some love to the Sing movies. Going out to movies is pretty hard for me these days (I had btk amp last year) but I’m really hoping to enjoy SMB on streaming in the not so distant future

Bowser wanting to marry Peach has been in a fair bit of Mario games. And it's something that I'm surprised Nintendo let illumination run wild with 😂 And Sing 2 is so good 💜
The whole point of The Lorax story from Dr. Seuss was about teaching kids to take care of the environment, those themes weren't just padded into the movie just to increase the film's runtime.
I have a sorta love/hate thing with Nintendo. I'm an 80s baby just like Sean. Started playing NES by 1987 and my uncle gave me an NES in 1988 since his son was still a baby. Got an SNES, N64, GameCube, and Wii. Skipped Wii U. Barely got a Switch Lite last year in Oct.
So Nintendo does mean a lot to me but at the same time, I don't always agree with some of their decisions. If you know Nintendo's history like I do, they're a mixture of Disney and Apple. Two companies I'm not always fond of.
I haven't seen the Super Mario movie yet but I can tell so many people are watching it as the parking lot I usually park my car in is usually full of cars since last Wednesday. This movie can hit a billion dollars no matter how good or bad it is.
I will say Nintendo catered to the right audience since the beginning. They've always been "kiddie". That's perfect because nostalgia is a powerful drug. Everyone who is seeing probably grew up with a Nintendo system in their household. Whether NES, SNES, N64, or Wii, it's like their first time in the world of gaming.
So Nintendo did it right. There are children born every day. In another 40 years, they'll be like us today taking their children to watch a Mario movie and enjoying it with their own children from all the nostalgia. That was smart by Nintendo.

This video is really interesting because for the most part, Sean and I have similar opinions on things, but this video I actually have a wildly different opinion on the Illumination movies.

Despicable me 2 is so underrated.
The third movie is more underrated. I can see people love the second movie a lot
With regards to some of your critiques of the mario movie, respectfully, those critiques actually make sense based on the games. The thin script and plot were done because mario has never really had, or needed, much of a story. Miyamoto recently stated that he likes to prioritize and refine the gameplay, but not so much the story. Bowser trying to marry peach also makes sense given how in super mario odyssey, bowser's entire plan is to kidnap peach, steal a whole bunch of relics that would be helpful in a wedding from around 12 kingdoms, and marry peach. But of course, at the end of the day, I'm glad you enjoyed it. These are all your personal preferences after all, and there's nothing wrong with that. I think it might be my new personal favourite illumimation film, honestly.

Despicable me 3 was the worst one . Worse than Minions . Minions actually had humor and entertained me but the 3rd one his brother was not a good character and I found the plot annoying and the minions aren’t even in there most of the time they separated them

12: minions not very good 3.5/10
Bad:
11: sing: weird 4/10
10: Secret life of pets 2 not a good sequel at all 5/10
9: sing 2 a little better than the first but still mostly the same illumination schtick 5/10
8: The secret life of pets: tries to be charming but I find it weird and it feels like kind of a ripoff of Oliver and company 5.5/10
7: the grinch fun but not great 6/10

1: Mario a lot of nostalgia but this has a great voice cast illuminations great animation and one of my worries didn't happen unfortunately since it's not a top tier Studio one of my worries came true I love most of it though 9/10

5. Dispicable Me 2 (Not as good as the first one, but once again, Illumination had great ideas)
6. Minions (A pretty good underrated movie. It hasn't streamed for free in years, unfortunately)
7. Minions, The Rize of Gru (A bit more boring than I expected, but decent nonetheless)
8. Sing (A bit on the boring side, vut it was somewhat inspired)
9. The Secret Life of Pets (This movie isnt boring, it just didnt have the greatest ideas)
10. The Grinch (I personally don't like this movie very much, but there were some funny moments)
11. Dispicable Me 3 (Somewhat uninspired. It mostly just felt like a cash grab)

I love the lorax, its number 1 and there is nothing you can do to change my mind
People complaining about The Super Mario bros movie lack of story and yet they praise a movie like Nomadland, which its story is not that big.
It’s not only the biggest opening weekend for an Illumination film, but the biggest opening for any animated film ever.
I was gonna completely disagree with you saying that Despicable Me 3 is better than 2 (3 just feels like complete filler) but you gave me something to think about with the core theme of Gru being a villain and experiencing growth and how that's not present in 2, but it's put back into 3 👍

Don't hate me... I love the Lorax. I'm not defending it, I'm not saying it's good, but I grew up watching it and I just have so much nostalgia. I also genuinely don't think it's as bad as people say and think it's pretty damn unironically and ironically funny.

13. Hop (it try’s to be an Easter classic but ends up being forgettable)
12. Minions (as a kid I thought it was OK but re-watching it made me realize how much it sucks)
11. The Lorax (again as a kid, I found it pretty good but I realize it’s a very weird movie that doesn’t make a whole Lotta sense)
10. Sing 2 (there is nothing really wrong with this movie but if I wanted to watch animals sing, I would just watch the first sing)
9. The secret life of pets 2 (nothing really stood out to me in this film, other than Harrison Ford but that’s it)
8. The grinch (it’s not too bad for what it is but I always prefer Jim Carreys grinch)
7. Sing (i’ve never been big on sing but then I watched it and I thought it wasn’t too bad)
6. The secret life of pets (as a kid I could not get past 15 minutes of the movie just because I thought there wasn’t anything interesting, but I decide to finally watch it after seven years and it’s really not that bad)
5. Despicable Me (this is the illumination movie that I’ve rewatch the most and can confidently say it’s good. Vector stands out)
4. Minions: The rise of gru (after watching minions, I was just hoping that I would get a good minions movie and not only did I get one but I got a big improvement of it)
3. Despicable Me 2 (I may be biased because I saw this in theaters at the time but to me, I feel like it still has the charm of the first movie and does it better)
2. Despicable Me 3 (I know this might be controversial, but I’ve always liked a franchise going on and on and I can definitely say that this is my favorite of the Despicable Me era)
1. The super Mario bros movie (this was my most anticipated movie of my lifetime, and I think the wait was worth it. As a Nintendo’s new start into films it’s off to a great start. I also think it has the best animation out of all the illumination movies besides a few errors it definitely comes in at number one)
Mario is what Illumination movies should look more like. Esp with the detailed scales and great soundtracks

Considering the quality of the more recent illumination movies, they might start focusing on quality over money. A lot of the past few movies were praised by audiences but there was this period of time after the first despicable me where it was just cash grab movies. Honestly happy to see the quality go up.

Man, I feel old. I can imagine a 22-year-old parent taking their 5-year-old child to watch it. She or he was born in 2001 who grew up on GameCube, Wii, Wii U, or Switch. It felt like literally yesterday to me when I got a Wii in 2006.

I can't rank the Wii U since I've never owned it. The reason why I love the Switch is not only is it portable, I didn't feel Nintendo held back on raw power like they did to all their previous handhelds. Game Boy through 3DS, they always felt underpowered to their main competitors.
I owned Game Boy, Game Boy Advance SP, and DS Lite and didn't care for the latter two. Why I didn't get a 3DS. I do have fond memories of the OG Game Boy since battery life lasted for hours and hours. My least favorite Nintendo is their most sold one: DS. I was a PSP fanboy and still am.

I've haven't played Galaxy 1 & 2 much. Played them briefly via emulation or I tried to. I thought they were fine but I can't rank them. Don't own Odyssey yet but will after I get all 3-stars in all the cups in Mario Kart 8: Deluxe.
I'm not the biggest fan when Mario is in 3D. I prefer him as a 2D platformer. Same with Sonic but I did enjoy Sonic Adventure 1 & 2. 3D World brought all the elements of SMB1 through SM64. It's like the tribute game to people who grew up from the 8-bit to 64-bit Marios. It's become my #1 but Super Mario World is my most played.
I'll probably go back and forth between 3D World and World as my favorite. While SMB3 was just awesome. I remember watching The Wizard (1988) with Fred Savage. That was a brand new game but the wiz kid already knew where the flute was.
Super Mario Bros. Super Show was NOT one of my favorites back in the day. All my classmates in the 3rd and 4th grade would mock it. Awful show. People praising it now 30+ years later is all due from a "drunken" nostalgia trip. The Link/Zelda segments every Friday were better.
I remember getting all those Happy Meal Mario toys back circa 1990. Love those along with the McDonald's Changeables robots circa 1987-1990. Mario, Teenage Mutant Turtles, Batman, and WWF wrestling meant the whole world to me at ages 9 to 10.
People should go watch 8-Bit Christmas (2021) and follow Tyler Esposito (My Retro Life) on RUclips if you're down for more nostalgia trips.
I got to say 1989-1990 were some of the best times I ever had. Nintendo was a huge part of that. Bravo to them for finding success in movies after that awful 1993 film. Nintendo deserves all the financial success they're getting. They've sorta became every generation's babysitters since the 80s.
At age 42, I appreciate the cutesy games now than I did 20 to 30 years ago. For years, I would use Toad/Toadette or Koopa/Para-Koopa for Super Mario Kart or Double Dash. Now I'll use Wario, Waluigi, Baby Daisy, Lemmy, or Metal Mario on Mr. Scooty or Wiggler and would smile every time Baby Daisy would say something cute or when she laughs.
There is a timeless charm from Nintendo that makes you appreciate them the older you all get. The older we get, the more we want to feel young again. Nintendo reaches deep into our nostalgic souls.
I'm 16 and a huge Wii fan, even the same age.
Wii U is trash.

If Super Mario movie wasn't already iconic I think it would be just under Despicable Me for me but with all the references it does what every movie is meant to do, provide amazing entertainment. Anyways, it's first for me by a loooong shot

Ranking all Illumination movies:
1) Definitely The Super Mario Bros movie (The movie really means everything to me and although a lot of people didn't like it. But I still enjoy it Mario is a legend video game character) 10/10
2) Sing 2 (Maybe I'll say this movie is could be a masterpiece, because it's very well-imporvement of the frist film and also the plot wasn't that boring, and the design visuals are awesome) 9.7/10
3) Despicable Me (This movie is so classic and my childhood fav, Gru is literally the best character and supervillain until she met a three girls who changed his perspective life into a good father) 9.5/10
4) Despicable Me 2 (It's amazing sequel, with the most iconic evil minions and "Happy" by Pharrel Williams is a peak catchy song that never gets old) 9.2/10
5) Sing 1 (Damn... This movie is so underrated and each characters are relatable too, and all the old songs are back, has some flaws but still ok ig Though I still prefer Zootopia) 8.3/10
6) Minions Rise Of Gru (This sequel minions movie is very unbelievable and it's also has a soild villains and this movie is really great for Gru's character) 8/10
7) Despicable Me 3 (I kinda see this third movie is a bit mediocre/mess because Gru's twin brother is kinda annoying character because they making him so forgettable, I liked this new villain it's one of best illumination villains) I'll give this a bit higher so 7.9/10
8) Minions (The plot movie is not very unique and why the minions backstories is kinda lame although still one of funniest movies. I only love Sandra Bullock as Scarlett Overkill here, she's so great) 7/10
9) Secret Life Of Pets 1 & 2 (This pet movie is very flat imo, because the story really similar like Toy Story, Although some voice actors are really awesome especially Kevin Hart as Snowball. I kinda agree this mocie is really intended for kids) I'll give them both 6.6/10
10) The Grinch (This one is better than the lorax even they're both are really bad-adaptation from the original, I kinda still think movie is heartwarming at the end) 6.2/10

'Despicable Me' is a classic! I've never seen the minions films but I really enjoy 'Despicable Me 2' and 'Despicable Me 3.' Gru can be a grump at times, but he's still lovable and the girls bring out the best in him!

The first Despicable Me movie my fave Illumination movie so I loved to see it at number one. :) The sequels aren't as good for me. I fall asleep while watching the Minions movie in cinema. The first and only time this happens to me😂 But maybe I should give Minions two a chance.
Watched the Mario movie today and I really liked it. The story could have been better but the look, the characters and the feelings while watching it were awesome.

I was really worried when I learned Illumination was going to work on the Mario movie, given their previous movies. At least they had the help of Nintendo to keep them on the right track, because I really disliked all their movies except probably Despicable Me. Thankfully Mario was okay. Had a few nitpicks in terms of the pacing and lack of some screentime (i.e interactions between Luigi and Peach), and the dog scene at the beginning felt like I was watching Secret Life of Pets instead of a Mario movie. I'm just glad it's still even a thing.
