I was a drummer for ten years, and while I hope to be able return to it one day, seeing syncopation like this handled effortlessly is really intimidating 😳
Don't let it freak you out man. Just take her nice and slow. Lots of good beginner pieces out there to help you ease back in. I marched snare in high-school and a little college. I am 41 now and I have really got back in to it the last year and a half or so. Your hands will remember. Just takes some time to knock the dust off lol. I do need more ibuprofen now though than I did at 20 lol😖😖😑😑🥺🥺
I don't drum anymore, life has taken me in another direction but I still love your videos. You have such a vibrant, magnetic energy in your teaching style. It's clear that you use your musical talent to make the world a better place. I wish we had more people like you in the percussion education world. Keep up the amazing work!
Best learning video for drumming lesson! I’m trying to cram as much as possible as a beginner drummer/professional pianist. It is always too fast for me to figure out how to play and read as the notes are slightly different than piano sheet. This is really helpful! Thank you!
That 5 sticking patter repeats but it feels as if the timing is displaced. Odd but once had memory kicks in sounds cool.. Thanks for the lesson.....more please!!
GREAT lick and great explanations. You're getting even better! How did you develop such a good intuition on subdividing? Other than practice are there books or a particular tradition of drumming you studied and/or played a lot?
Thanks!! I find a lot of value in the freestyle culture that I grew up in. It gave me the ability to beat box and eventually follow the drum speaking style of tabla drumming (kind of lol). I study great teachers and communicators in order to get better at engaging my students. Those people aren't all drummers. I have marched under/with some great players and teachers!
@@marcushawkinsmusic Thanks Marcus! Sounds like an unorthodox start, but it probably helped you immensely that you where used to verbalizing rhythmical patterns very early on.
great suggestion and i might do that in some future videos. the algorithm does treat thing differently if someone stops watching after a few seconds vs them skipping to the end.
Mr. Hawkins you have made my day, I truly needed this in-depth instruction, i would like to continue my instruction with you, how can I contact you personally, it's for educational purposes in the country I am in. And Strength to you brother of mines.🙏
Hey there just got onto my schools snare line is there any easier lines you can recommend, I tried going through it at .5 speed but I just wasnt getting it
I'm going to stay on the practice pad until I get ALL of it down pack. The way that you broke it down and then toke each exercise and then mixed it into the rimshots was SMOKING especially @ 7:28. You're a GOOD teacher and this is a WONDERFUL lesson. 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
green screen and then i set the background gradient to match the color of my shirt. I was about 6 feet away from the green screen and i always light myself different from the green screen. hope this helps!

Trust me, there is a lot of effort! I've gotten more relaxed over the years but my brain is still working!!

That smile when you get a technical lick like this down. It’s a hard feeling to describe but very rewarding 😊

Just a suggestion, play the lick entirely and then break it down. That way the viewer can decide if this worth watching.
