Mercedes C63 AMG misfire diagnosis

  • In todays video I share an Interesting Diagnosis of a 2014 Mercedes-Benz C63 AMG that had a multiple Cylinder misfire. What started as a routine misfire diag quickly escalated to us having to tear into the vehicles valve-train as excessive lifter noise was discovered. What we found was a hole in one of the intake lifters on the number 8 cylinder, along with excess wear on the other lifters. This is a known weak point on most M156 engines and often leads to a loud valve train.
    I want to apologize for talking a lot in the video, I initially recorded more in depth clips of the diagnosing process but the audio was terrible so I just made a recap of our diagnosis. Hope you enjoy and I will be sure to improve in the future videos to come.

    I got my amg back w204 thermostae alternator battery raditor engine mounts replaced then a code cyindley 5,6,7 changed the spark plugs with torque specs now have codes for all 8 it shakes when I step on the gas and idel should I do the lifters how much would it cost

    I was cruising peaceful in my C63 2013 and engine check light got on😔😔, I don’t know why or what happened , I only have X pipe

    this what happens when u stick to mb229.5 on a 63.>>>> next time motul\amsoil 10w-60 with ceratec...

      I’m not 100% sure what the particular diffuser was on this car but I know it’s the DTM style diffuser and RWcarbon has a very similar one. RWcarbon also makes some great products, all their carbon lips that I’ve installed on various cars fit with little to no modification, here is a link:

    time to change the oil, all that metal from the lifter will be in the oil

      kenneth croll you are correct, it seems someone did an oil change and changed spark plugs as a “quick fix” before it was brought to us so when we checked the oil/filter we didn’t find much metal. But the car received all new lifters, and extensive head work on the bank two cylinder head. It also got an oil change and coolant flush as well, after it was all said and done the car was running smooth and was nice and quiet.

    is it the p31 package?

      No this one was just a regular C63, it didn’t have the grey magnesium alloy intake manifold or the upgraded lifters so I don’t think it was. It was however, really nicely specd, one of my favorite color combos on a 204 C63 and it’s a facelifted four door, which you don’t see too often.

      @@Bozs4life I have a 2013 coupe p31 65k miles, does that mean that the chance of Intake Manifold Failure and Camshaft and Hydraulic Lifters wear are less likely to occure? What are some preventative maintenance that I should do without over-working on the car.

      @@Frank-cd9kh Unfortunately, the only real upgrade Mercedes did with the 2011-2014 C63s was the head bolts and not much else so you are still faced with the weak valve train wear these engines suffer with age along with the intake manifold which tends to crack at the seams and where various vacuum fittings and actuators reside (though I believe the P31s have slightly different lifters which is good)
      All I can suggest is frequent oil changes with good quality oils and make sure you allow the OIL temp to get up to operating temperature before shutting the car off, avoid short trips etc. lastly find a good honest tech who is familiar with the chassis and common faults, best of luck Frank!
