- The 1988 Mazda Rx7 is the gateway drug into the Rotary world. Wedged between the carbureted 12a of the first generation Rx7, and the twin turbo force inducted 13b of the third generation Rx7, the second generation's naturally aspirated, fuel injected 13b is a great middle ground for first time rotary drivers and owners. While the S4 13b won't have the horsepower capabilities of later rotaries, the engine offers reliability and sustainability. Two words rotary engined cars are usually banned from using.

My dad had one of these parked at a "friends" house. Without consulting my dad, the guy sold it. Without the title, I don't think my dad had given him the keys either. They just hauled it away on a trailer. It's been many years so I don't think he can ever get it back. So disappointing. My dad was proud of that car.

I wouldnt trade my NA S5 FC for anything. I absolutely love mine, I got it almost a year ago and im still working on it. It's just about done and I cant wait to hear that rotary engine.

Almost had a 91 rx7 rhd turbo 2 with the seats in the back last november, looked straight out of the factory and had around 1k on rebuild. Lost it during a test drive to an Ebay buyer. It's impossible to explain the driving experience but it's honestly the best feeling car I've ever driven. The rx7 in general is a gateway drug.

I traveled all the way to Germany to get my turbo II S5.
getaway yeah!! I always love rx7 so I bougt a 86 s4 gx(base model) 2000$ cad drove it for a year and the previous owner had blow a water sceal but minor no smoke but the collant buzzer will warn you after a 45min drive highway so I never had a long drive in it so I decide to pull out the s4 and im buying a s5 that I will streetport agressively and will delete the exhust difuser It will have a weber carb douwdraft or side dont know for now but I carb it for an old school tuning style msd6al igniter ls1 coils emmission delete and long primary headers plus an electric fan set up so i need to change the alternator for a fd one becose it generate more amps big project hp goal is 220+ vs the 150ish from factory. I love your channel keep it rolling (sorry for mispeling im a french canadian who who think he is okay in english)
I currently own a 1988 GTU, it’s an awesome car, mine currently doesn’t run and I’m doing a ton of work on it but it’s still a beauty

outside of the specific sub-model differences (GTU, Turbo II, GTUs) are there any year differences after 88? is it worth buying newest year available?
The FC is actually very practical when going grocery shopping rations for a whole week ahead of you. I did that and managed to fit everything in the trunk. Didn't even have to resort to back seats. When buying winter tires I managed to fit all the tires in the car at once. One in the trunk, 2 in the back seats and one in the passenger seat. Probably could've fitted the last tire in the back seats as well. Try do any of this in an MX-5...

very nice. just picked up my first. Very good info in this video. I was lucky enough the complete drivetrain was rebuilt by the Rotary Doctor out of Missouri and has 15,000 miles since with no issues so far. I love it.

Idles at 1200. What should I look into.

After it warmed up on test drive, I floored it and it would shift at 4500 rpm and jerked a little one time.
I assume that was a trans issue.
Should I do a trans fluid flush?
There is a nice looking red na FC (with four lug wheels and window tail lights) in my area for 8 Grand Canadian. Good first car?

My red Rx7 was a us model and had the 2+2 idk if I keep the seats or not they were red.
My dad used to have one in black with the BBS wheels

I am planning to get a 1988 FC SE, but I always worry that parts will be very difficult/take lots of time to find. Is this a huge concern when getting a RX-7?
runboy135 easier to find s4 then s5 parts. There are still a load of parts out there. Atkins has new parts and used parts can be found on the forums.

Which RX7s came with the13B 6 port? How reliable was the solenoid that opened and shut the two additional ports?
n/a s5 and s4 are all 6 port
David O Rodriguez the 5& 6th ports on all 86-87 FCs had exhaust pressure based, and 89-91 FCs electronicly activation based.
David O Rodriguez, the '84/'85 Gsl-Se Rx7s also had the 13b 6 port.
So when you premix, is it possible to ruin the fuel injectors this way?
Aj Rodillo from what I’ve heard, not really. The rotary engine is designed to burn oil in the combustion process so it will naturally combust the premix when it’s injected into the engine.

Do you prefer pre-mix over Sohn? If so why?
I've always premixed because my OMP was broken when I got my car. I trust it because I can physically see the oil going in so I can make sure the car is getting lubricated.
I found one for sale near me, not sure ok what could be wrong with it, or anything else, just that it's an RX-7 for sale, but I still want it! Even though I'm only 14..

at least in my opinion I would say the S5 is an overall better package than the S4 hire Redline more power slightly updated engine from the S4 and of course the best-looking version of the FC in my opinion the prices for an 89 to 91 fc is about the same in my area great video keep it up love the content

How is your rx7 holding up? Or more accurately your friend's? We're buying an 89 this weekend with 80k miles on it. Don't know a thing about how to care for rotaries! Help!!! ;)

S4 tailights are better; change my mind.
They clean, but something bout s5 taillights hit different

Multi link rear suspension = four wheel steering. That's why you like it in the turns.
Although the FC RX7 has bushing "controlled" all wheel steering, the multi link suspension has nothing to do with that. You can even purchase solid bushings to remove the AWS altogether

mehftv I had an ‘88 RX-7 with the 2+2 back seats. I drove it for 6 years. It was a great car and I had no issues with it except the AC went out towards the end of having it👍🏻

Series 5 non turbo would be better to start with. They have an easier CEL diagnosis, better engines, look better, 5 lugs, and most of them had black interior. Only thing you have to remember is to premix with s5 omp
