1988 Mazda RX-7 Turbo II 10th Anniversary: The Basement Find | Petrolicious

  • A white sports car from the 1980s with white badging, white wheels, white louvers, and a healthy dosage of “turbo” signage is ripe for the ultra-low-hanging fruit that is a cocaine joke. This Mazda is too cool for that though. It is very much of its era however, and you’d be forgiven for thinking this car has been modified by someone with a penchant for monochrome. Besides the louvers, fluids, tires, and a sticker or two, this RX-7 is exactly as it was in 1988, and its odometer shows less than 2,000 miles. It’s a true time capsule, and it came to its owner, longtime friend of Petrolicious Sean Lee, by way of the Walker family. Watch the film to find out more about this amazingly well preserved “basement find.”

      The 10AE had 1500 of them made, the Infini was 1400, the GTUs was 1100 and the final edition vert was 150. HOWEVER, the GTUs had 100 of them that were not restamped with new vins, making them the rarest fc ever produced by the factory. I was 21 in 1991, and bought a gold turbo 2 w/ 20k miles. Put every paycheck into it for 3yrs straight. Intercooler. Exhaust. Chip. Turbo. Bigger Fuel Injectors....suspension...etc etc. Best car I ever owned - wish I had saved it these past 30 yrs. Thanks for taking me back. This car was waaaay ahead of its time back then. It has aluminum susp arms, aluminum spare tire, and aluminum JACK from the factory. Throw in the all mighty rotary and its a wrap. I devoured MANY cars back then. The best was a hopped up GN built for dragging. And the RX7 can corner too. xoxox

    Awesome! I'm proud to say I have 1 of the 1500 10th Anniversary T2 RX7's made. There's probably not many of them left. There's definitely not very many on the FC 10th AE registry on the RX7Club forum. Mine has been modified by previous owners and not feasible to return to original condition. It will however always look like the 10th AE that it is and always have a rotary heartbeat! It may have an additional rotor or maybe 2 but it will brap as long as I own it!

    I was the youngest child and by the time I turned 16 and got my license and a job, my folks were done with parenting and did there own thing, and I did mine. One day they came home and my mom says, "We bought a new car and you're never ever going to drive it. EVER!" (Things were a bit frosty between us by then) I waited several hours to go down to the garage, and there sat a white '87 Turbo II, almost identical to this car. So I open the door, sit in it, and looked at the visor. Someone, presumably a salesman had slipped a key into a slot put there for that very purpose. Naturally I took the key and it was never mentioned by either of them. They made a big production of taking all the keys to the neighbor when they went on trips on their motorcycles or in the RV, and I had a key all the while. Because they were so sure I didn't have access to it, they never checked the mileage. I had some great times in that car.

    Petrolicious, do Mazda RX7 posts that shows this car's performance like you do with the Porsches. I had a 1986 base model with the 5-speed standard transmission, no turbo, front disc brakes, rear drum brakes, that I was just fixing. That car was 18 years old when I made the unwise decision to sell it. Even at that age, that RX7 would do 140mph. Once you get into 4th gear and over 4000 rpms, the accelleration is amazing! That car had almost 50/50 weight distribution, and was the most stable and confidence inspiring at high speeds and curvy roads. This is the next car that I will purchase. Other RX7 guys know what I mean.

    I was very fortunate to have had a 1988 Mazda RX-7 as my first car...I was 18 years old, fresh out of Boot Camp and attending “A” School in San Diego. I didn’t even have a Driver’s License...I got my DL and then went to the on base USAA credit union to apply for a car loan. 3 days later I was approved for $8000 and they even had a guy there that would seek out cars for you in your loan range. A couple of days later, he takes me out to a dealer lot to look at cars...none of them peaked my interest...until he said: “ There is one more car but I don’t really want to show it to you because I know it will be like giving a kid dynamite to play with.”. Lo and behold he takes me over to an arrest me red RX-7 with black out tinted windows...it was love/lust at first sight...I KNEW I wasn’t going to leave without her. Mind you, there were a couple of hic ups...it was a manual (which I didn’t know how to drive) and I was 6’4” at the time...didn’t matter. He drove it back to the base for me and that night I learned how to drive a manual on the abandoned side of the base. I LOVE THAT CAR till this day...this was back in 1994...I drove her from San Diego to Seattle (change of duty stations) and then from Seattle back home to Atlanta. Best. Car. Ever.

I failed the first time because when I parked on an uphill slope I had the wheels turned the right way and in first gear, but forgot to turn the engine off before I let the clutch out. Oops! He actually said, "are you trying to kill me"! I'm 63 years old and still get a chuckle from that!✌

    I had one of these, Turbo II FCs, it was quite nice to drive, but I then got a NA Miata and liked it alot more, it was just pure, uncomplicated fun with no shocking realization at the end of the drive that I just burned soo much fuel. The FC was really great for long-distance travel tho, which I never really used it for.

      @devilsoffspring5519 Год назад

      The Miata was also supposed to be a well-made car, you could drive it for an hour or two without spending an entire summer of weekends trying to fix it. The FC3S RX-7 was the pinnacle of crap build quality--just absolutely horrendous.

      Because Mazda actually copied it to make it the 924's rival. And ... It worked!

      The first RX-7 was definitely a 924 clone but by this time I think Mazda was going for more of a 944 look. It's funny how similar the Mazda RX7, Nissan 240sx, third gen Toyota Supra looked.
