I have been Daily driving and road tripping my FD for 3 years. Done just regular maintenance here and there, accidently skipped a couple oil changes here and there. Never had a problem, even in really bad LA traffic everyday or on 2000mi road trips. I also don't baby the car. I beat the actual shit outta the FD but she loves the punishment. 92k miles. Only actual engine work I've done was tear the motor apart and replace the coolant seals. Cleaned everything else off and put it back together, even with the OEM Apex seals. Can never go wrong with more rotary content :). Consider getting a "sohn" adapter (OMP adapter) for the car. I made my own but I believe rotary aviation and a couple other places sell them. This way you just have a tank full of two stroke oil and it stops pulling from the crankcase. You can even put a level sensor in it so that you don't have to pop the hood every time. I like the idea of videos like this, it shows what living with these special cars is like, when they’re doing what they were built to be doing, they’re amazing but they’re all compromised on their own ways which I think is cool
The RX-7 is so beautiful. I was thinking of getting one, but decided on the Supra. It's definitely a lot more simple with a MK4, lol. Just normal car maintenance.
Thanks for another great vid, car looks and sounds *great*. I have to say though, most of the friction that stops you dailying your car is self-inflicted. Cold shut-off is more an RX-8 issue, my FD doesn't flood when shut down cold. I normally shutoff at 4k rpm if cold but that's more a superstition, never had any problems without. Premix is superfluous while the OMP is working. Incidentally Mazda improved the OMP in 96 so subsequent cars consume far less oil, doesn't help your 93 tho unless you can source a later pump. Stock clutch is fine at c.330hp, unsure with your power. Stock PAS is fine, car is designed for it and makes it easier to catch the tail I think. Space behind the seats can take a suitcase or two, plenty of luggage for two ppl. So basically the car Mazda originally sold, especially Series 7 on, is a perfectly good daily driver if you want to ;) If you want to turn it into a toy then absolutely, it's fun enough to be a special car with the light weight, balance and power, but that's a choice not an inherent issue. My 96 FD was my only car for seven years. Yes it's fragile, but I found it perfectly acceptable (as did my wife!). I gave in and got an AMG to run alongside only recently. RX-7 isn't going anywhere though! Good luck fixing the diff and keep us posted!
@@mitchellsteindler It can overheat, the metal parts warp and and then shatter. It extreme cases it can start to grind the inside of the housing and damage it. You see it happen in failed burnout videos of exploding clutches.
@@mitchellsteindler NP. Another detail is that you can actually grind off all the friction material and just be grinding down the metal and destroy the flywheel. Another thing I've seen. A driver experienced with burnouts will know something is off and he's not spinning tires because it feels different. If you are a beginner it's best to angle the side mirror so you can see 1 rear tire and be 100% sure you are spinning the tires and not burning the clutch till you get a feel for it.
@@mitchellsteindler it wasn't a sudden failure. But it was last in 5 relatively back-back runs and it just quit holding. I was able to drive home, after it cooled down but it wouldn't hold any real throttle after that.
5K Video ?? My man was killing it in 4K and now he's uploading in 5k not sure about the diff though but juss shows the commitment to Quality. Unmatched. Surreal. Satisfying.
Thank you so much for bringing back the POV/asmr/binaural content! I’ve missed this so much! Track vids are great and I want to see more, but these are just the best. Good luck with hunting down those annoying little features and the diff! As always the FD will be back more bulletproof than ever
I feel like as you get older (and also start making more money) you appreciate the benefits of newer more comfortable and more reliable car. I love driving my modded cars, but I don't want to drive them every day. I enjoy my boring crossover because it's so comfortable and has so many useful features.
Ouch, just popped the diff in my fd a couple weeks back doing the same thing. Even with a brace it's the weakest link in the drivetrain. Mine ripped the teeth off of the torsen lsd gears which is pretty common. Apparently (wish I knew previously) it's fragile at launches, esp with big sticky tires, but once you're moving it's fine even with big hp. Regarding the omp, better to keep it on a well built street car. Without the omp there won't be any oil lubricating the apex seals on throttle off over run (like cruising down a hill) which won't be great for the engine over time.
@@hkn_r34 yup, u can do that, but that's a little less streetable since you're burning more fuel, makes the car feel a little less smooth on decel and possibly shooting flames out the back depending on how u have it tuned.
Dailying an e92 m3 here. I expected it to be a nightmare. Bough it used a month ago, changed the rod bearings for the updated OEM ones and since then...its been only a huge smile on my face every time i drive to work :)

Can't stop thinking about short Ben. I usually don't get emotional about people I've never met but I've been watching videos from this channel regularly for about 5 years so it feels pretty personal. Hope he recovers well. 🙏
I daily drive my RZ FD RX7, the most track prepared factory RX7 made. It sucks a lot of the time but when the road opens up it’s definitely worth the hassle of not having AC in traffic
Good to know I'm not alone for not daily drive my 370z. Gets like 13 MPG on a good day and things constantly need to be maintained so I can relate so much with all the fuel additives and oil checking. This RX-7 though, is on a whole different level with the amount of work needed so props to you for being able to keep up with it. When it's all said and done though. It truly is all about the smiles per gallon
Yeah but having all those little quirks gives it character and soul, lol. I daily drive my Evo 9 with a built 2.2L and I check the oil level every time I fill up as well because built engines seem to consume more oil than normal/OEM ones. Idk, I like knowing I'm taking steps to take care of the thing I love so much
Not gonna lie when he was driving the curves, I was waiting for an 86 to appear and smoke him on the downhill with an inertia drift... I want to see more MR2 content and RX7 Content!!!! DIFF WENT BOOM LOL.. knock knock knock knock as the video cuts.. I LOVE IT
I've had an FD for 10 years. I kept it mostly stock so it was fairly reliable until a water seal let go. But the oil usage was never bad, I'd do an oil change before I had to worry about it getting too low. I had full power steering and aircon so never had any comfort issues and it had the quiet stock exhaust (too quiet). I am rebuilding it now and as tempting as a single turbo is, I think I'll go for keeping it stock twins (high flowed) and just a bump in power to 300hp or so. I really miss driving it and this video reminds me why I love it. Beautiful shape etc.. The interior plastics did always annoy me and the aftermarket has improved interior panels / handles etc.. So all these things can be resolved. I really want a set of Advans however for mine.
Los Chicos de Gear and Gasoline pese a ser muy jóvenes dan consejos y comentarios enormemente sensatos para los aficionados y entusiastas. ¡gracias muchachos por compartir vuestras experiencias , de verdad se agradece!. 👍🇨🇱
Everything he said is true. Literally the first 2 things he said about breaking happened to mine. First my exterior door handle broke off. Replaced that one to pretty much have most of my interior door plastic fall apart. Replaced all that. Now I do exactly as he does lol roll it down and grab the door from the outside. The looks you get from normal people while putting premix in the gas tank is priceless. The car is incredibly uncomfortable on long drives thanks to the bride seats. Great for track time or short drives around town to shows or whatnot but they are not great seats for daily use. Only thing I can say is that I still have power steering. Other than that spot on why I only drive it to events and about once every week (sometimes) to work. Oh and yea the stock rear diffs are not fans of hard launches. So sorry that happened but a great time to upgrade now lol all that said I can’t bring myself to ever not love it every time I drive it.

6:47 [eargasm] always love the sound of rotary downshifting
Ouch man. I killed my OE clutch in a similar fashion. "I know I can make one last run and go faster!" Hard 2-3 shift and Weee go the rpms in 3rd.
Never heard of sudden clutch failure. Usually wear over time...
@@mitchellsteindler It can overheat, the metal parts warp and and then shatter. It extreme cases it can start to grind the inside of the housing and damage it. You see it happen in failed burnout videos of exploding clutches.
@@SI0AX thanks for the explanation!
I can fall asleep to that turbo noise and those back fires, so amazing
4:20 Most countrys outside the US use Liters to measure fuel.
In liters the RX7s tank holds 76 L of fuel
How many corndogs is it?
They don't use cubic inches???
@@PringleSn1ffer No, we use cubic decimeters ;)
holy fuck that is a lot
5K Video ?? My man was killing it in 4K and now he's uploading in 5k
not sure about the diff though but juss shows the commitment to Quality.
Unmatched. Surreal. Satisfying.
Love it.
Any updates on the other Ben?
Hoping and Praying that he’s recovering well 🙏🏽
Great call leaving the music off for the session on the BRP, that was awesome.
Thank you so much for bringing back the POV/asmr/binaural content! I’ve missed this so much! Track vids are great and I want to see more, but these are just the best. Good luck with hunting down those annoying little features and the diff! As always the FD will be back more bulletproof than ever
Yes!! RX-7 content is back! I’m stoked!!
I feel like as you get older (and also start making more money) you appreciate the benefits of newer more comfortable and more reliable car. I love driving my modded cars, but I don't want to drive them every day. I enjoy my boring crossover because it's so comfortable and has so many useful features.
Depends on mods.
@@MJ-uk6lu of course it does, but for the most part the mods that make a car more fun to drive also sacrifice comfort and/or reliability.
I’ve had 3 fds, I enjoy watching them on RUclips now, no interest in maintaining another one!! Great video, was a joy to watch!
Without the omp there won't be any oil lubricating the apex seals on throttle off over run (like cruising down a hill) which won't be great for the engine over time.
this is why you turn off the fuel cut so its constantly lubricated..
@@hkn_r34 yup, u can do that, but that's a little less streetable since you're burning more fuel, makes the car feel a little less smooth on decel and possibly shooting flames out the back depending on how u have it tuned.
I'm glad to hear someone explain what's 'wrong' with this car. I've heard so much talk on the Internet about it.
Time for a 8.8 diff, might as well make it bomb proof for the power!👍👌
Dailying an e92 m3 here. I expected it to be a nightmare. Bough it used a month ago, changed the rod bearings for the updated OEM ones and since then...its been only a huge smile on my face every time i drive to work :)
For anyone curious, that fuel consumption in non-freedom units is about 22L/100kms.
But hey, smiles per gallon is what really counts.
Right?
I used to daily my FD, it's a horrible daily but I love it. I miss it though, it's been in the shop for bodywork for 7 months...
This video made me excited in terms of finally getting her back soon!!
Well that ended with a big OOF...
Dude if you have the factory oil metering pump dont add more premix into the fuel, its not necessary, i daily drove a rx7 for 3 years and it was sweet
Get well Ben!
Can't stop thinking about short Ben. I usually don't get emotional about people I've never met but I've been watching videos from this channel regularly for about 5 years so it feels pretty personal. Hope he recovers well. 🙏
“Wish I had ideas for more RX7 content”
I daily drive my RZ FD RX7, the most track prepared factory RX7 made. It sucks a lot of the time but when the road opens up it’s definitely worth the hassle of not having AC in traffic
You guys should have a collab with Rob Dahm and have him build you a bomber 2 or 3 rotor for that thing.
He doesnt build.
Better go with angelmotorosport
thank you for that raw driving footage! nice to see and hear that car on a fun road.
thanks for the tank capacity conversion, that helped a lot
Ben driving that car through the twisties put a smile on my face. That sound is intoxicating
These make me smile when I spot one in the wild, what a beautiful thing Mazda made!
cant beat the rotary sound! keep this kinda content coming! ✔👌
I daily drive mine and I love it :)
Yeah but having all those little quirks gives it character and soul, lol. I daily drive my Evo 9 with a built 2.2L and I check the oil level every time I fill up as well because built engines seem to consume more oil than normal/OEM ones. Idk, I like knowing I'm taking steps to take care of the thing I love so much
Omg the driving is amazing this car looks like so much fun and worth all the little pain points he talks about
Just heard about Ben being in the hospital, very very sad to hear that. my thought and prayers are with you Ben, feel better ASAP.
I LOVE IT
Yeah baby! Caught that end on camera! The best way to go!
that fly by at 3:43 was so good!
The flames in rx7s are just unmatched
I really want a set of Advans however for mine.
this guy knows how to docuement a legit video about the rx7, no bs just straight to the shit, subscribed
Good god finally more rx7 vids been wanting this for to long
Los Chicos de Gear and Gasoline pese a ser muy jóvenes dan consejos y comentarios enormemente sensatos para los aficionados y entusiastas. ¡gracias muchachos por compartir vuestras experiencias , de verdad se agradece!. 👍🇨🇱
that sound of the turbskies spooling up is just epic with the sound of rotary burps. ouch on the dif
I look forward to more RX7 content. Watching the original Rx7 road trip inspired me to drive my supra more and finally finish the build!
Oh no! That hurts a bit! Thanks for sharing. I've blown 2 transmissions, so I know the feeling. Transmission 3 is going strong!
Love it. Sounds like a small prop plane and shoots fire!
The exploding diff was the cherry on top for this video
I love how the rx7 and rx8 looks and they are dirt cheap in my area but I am not brave to own and maintain one.
