2002 Mazda RX-7 Spirit R: Rotary Spirit

- The influence of modified Japanese sports cars found a new high watermark in the car enthusiast community in the 1990s and early 2000s, especially with the younger subset looking for something other than their parents’ favorite European and American fare. Skyline GT-Rs, Toyota Supras, Mazda RX-7s, and their contemporaries provided already-potent bases upon which one could build a truly personalized machine, in regards to both performance and aesthetics, and with outcomes on either end of the spectrum of taste. The model lines were nothing new, but they arguably peaked-and simultaneously-during the 1990s and early 2000s.
This is when Aaron Backx grew up, so the obsession with cars like his twin-turbo rotary-powered RX-7 featured in today’s film shouldn’t be surprising. A lot of kids were affected by the so-called Gran Turismo era, but very few of them can say they grew up to own one of the halo cars of the era, Mazda’s ultimate send-off to the iconic RX-7: the Spirit R.

The FD Rx-7 is one of those cars that looks perfect from the factory, a timeless design that aged beautifully!
LOL it was aged when it left the factory!!!!
Except the bump on the nose for the license plate. It's criminal that it was acceptable to do that on a car this pretty.
@@michaelmeliambro5117 Says you
1:34 "Making a mistake of driving an RX-7." Best mistake ever.
wallet says otherwise :)
Lucky man. He got it before the price skyrocketing.
BIGGEST WASTE OF ONE'S TIME EVER.......
reedrich4rds , my wallet is looking happy, got a 2000 fd Rx7 , 5 years ago for $19k (AUS) now it’s worth around $40k
The future looks bright 👍
@@rotorspinny5516 LOL no way in hell can a JDM POS like that fetch that kind of dough!!!!!
thank you for not messing around with the car
Agreed. Sure it's nice to modify a car to add your own personal touch, but in this instance, i think leaving it stock is the way to go.
Yeah, I hate it when "tuners" take a great car and ruin it - low riders, stupid huge wheels etc. A young turk in my neighborhood found a perfectly clean, low milage 300 ZX, 2 years ago. I congratulated him for his find. "Well thanks sir !"
Then he proudly "tuned it". Oh man... pure disaster. Shame.
@@japsniper1980 For me, I think wheels and coilovers is the best mod for 90s jdm cars and its very easy to reverse it bk to oem
@@marcryvon Low Riders are nice. They are art when done right.
Well it's a Spirit R. It would be like modifying an e30 M3 at this point. Unfortunately, in stock form, they will have failures and parts have been getting phased out for a while and the existing stock has climbed in price substantially. It's actually the main reason I sold mine last year and oddly wound up buying a Volvo. Happy to see one in Canada protected from the elements. Hopefully, it has a long life with what seems like a great owner.
7 minutes and not one clip of exhaust note... Beautiful car though.
ugh
I have to agree...the rotary makes such a unique sound, it should be against a the law to make a video without showing it revving out...
the sound would make the video R rated :)
Haha... RUclips would demonetize it for “violence”
1:14 tho
Good lord, that car is absolutely *mint.* Another great film as always. The RX7 (of any generation) has always been one of my top vehicles from Japan.
Got to keep these things as stock as possible. Mod the other RX-7 and leave these 1500 beauty Spirit R alone.
I love that he is keeping it stock more people should do this more often just enjoying the car for what it truly is
Just make it lighter.
I'm impressed, it's hard to find a mint condition RX7 these days, let alone Spirit R
The Spirit R is one of my dream cars. Always the first car I think about when JDM is brought up.
Now that the Supra debuted, what if Mazda hit us w/ the RX-9 reveal
@@redshed4672 and what if it is anti-purist
@@MrTwamoghnade Or no rotary engine r.i.p. heritage
@@redshed4672 they are considering a hybrid with rotary as the secondary engine.
@@MrTwamoghnade I think they said they weren't sure if it'll even be a sports car application
Whoa, that's one of the cleanest FD's I've ever seen. It looks like it just left the dealership! It's great to see so many people still love rotaries and hold them in high regard, they're definitely something uniquely special and can instantly bring a smile to any enthusiast. Awesome car, congrats on finding such a treasure. And seeing you know what you're doing I'm sure it'll live a good and long life with you.
This guy GETS IT...DRIVE IT! Petrolicious also GETS IT, recognizing the next wave of icons, THANK YOU!!
Klasse Act - Next wave? The RX-7 is nothing new on the enthusiast radar.
@@mr.butterworth4216 ...it is here and to alot of enthusiasts who don't follow JDM vehicles.
@@klasseact6663 After just one drive in it, tho, you'll wish it weren't here......
Wish I could hear it though 😐
The RX-7 is maybe the best looking Japanese car ever made. I agree they look best in black and with no modifications at all. That car is a keeper.
I agree just those wheels need changing !
This was the peak of RX7 design. Man I loved these cars.
An RX-7 on a Petrolicious channel?
Instant click!
Bcuz you clearly don't know any better......
@@michaelmeliambro5117 lmao you've taken the time to reply to like 5+ comments just to hate on this car... what a joke
Interesting car? Beautifully filmed? Every statement he made is a question?
i can't unhear it now haha
LOL? .. I was just going to comment on that one myself?
It's that horrendous 'high rising terminal contour'
up speak
Rangifulla awful
Canadia has that sound. I've never noticed of the Quebecois do it in french....
Wow what a find. Wouldn't sell that ever, what a piece of automotive history.
When I was in school in the mid 80's, the Celica, Supra, and Honda Prelude were some of my favorite cars.
Feels amazing to be able to connect more with an owner from the same generation as I am. Beautiful example of an RX-7.
Perfect. I’ve had rotaries from the RX-2 through the second gen RX-7 and loved them all.
Amazing video as always!
You should do a video about Impreza 22B STI, Nismo 400R or Nismo Z-Tune. All of them are amazing cars!
They are also very rare. Many of them are probably sitting in collections and not being driven.
I love these very personal accounts of how ownership came to be. This wouldn’t be my typical taste in car but the passion is clear here and now I’m intrigued to check them out. Nice one!
Yesssss, so glad you guys finally featured an FD, and a Spirit R at that. Man its so perfect completely stock.
Gorgeous car. In the last apartment complex I lived in before buying a home, someone else there owned a brand new RX-7 of this generation and since they were forced to park it outside nearby I had plenty of opportunities to admire it. I'm not a Mazda fan so this is the first I've heard of the Spirit R. I can see why it would be a very desirable car. So cool to see any car of this era still completely stock. Thanks for sharing!
Absolutely beautiful contact as always I really like how you focused on the nineties and how that influenced our view on Japan and its cars
I drove home to spend Christmas with my folks in 1985 and my Dad and I went out to look at cars, as we both wanted to drive an RX-7.
I bought a Dover White with dark chocolate interior '85 GSL-SE after having driven it for just a few minutes. My Dad bought a silver '86 the same day.
Other than my '11 Audi S4, that RX-7 was my favorite all-time car. I paid around $16k for her, and she was worth every penny. My dad sold his to my nephew ten years later.
Sure wish I still had mine!
Kudos for keeping it stock ! Beautiful and fully spirited cars.
"White Rx7s are the most expensive obviously because of intial d"
ya dun goofed kiddo. but your rx7 is a beauty, so it cancels out.
Trevor Yea I’d say yellow is probably the most sought after honestly. At least in USA 🤷🏻♂️
@@DonutisTrash Yeah, you're probably right. Personally, I'd love one in Montego Blue!
I love how the next shot shows a yellow rx7 as well
I think he was talking about ryosuke takahashi's white FC
The hardest colour to find, is always the colour you're looking for...
My older brother would always let me borrow his DVD's of Initial D, and i remember this being one of my favorite cars from the series. The RX-7 is what you call a recent classic.
My first car was a used 1983 Mazda RX-7 (12-a, 1.1L). It didn't have much torque (or horsepower) but man, it was a joy to drive.
Absolutely beautiful. I used to love this model in Gran Turismo 2.
Love the Japanese sports cars from this era. The Supra is the most iconic but the RX7 is the most beautiful.
Beautiful video on the most pure, the most unique, the most beautiful sports cars ever made.
Awesome spec! Didn't know RX7 had that kind of options from the factory. Carbon seats and harnesses WOW!
What a beautiful car, Mazdas are great fun to drive. Wish I had an Rx7, still happy with my Mazda2.
I get the thrill of making loads of mods on FDs, but to me this RX-7 being fully stock makes it far more desirable.
Awesome job man. I wish I could get my hands on such a clean RX-7 one day.
Awesome ending to a great skit on the legendary FD3s, the "holygrail"
Beautiful black FD! So clean!
The perfect style of precious Spirit R!
Absolutely gorgeous car, and easily on its way to becoming one of the most timeless sports cars of the 90's. And this is easily the pinnacle version of it.
I really like the way you make these videos. always feels like you are building sort of a statue for these cars for everyone to look at.
There is something addictive about this car!!!! I currently own an FB model and I cannot wait to drive it on the weekends.
Owned and drove five of the mid 80's model, really enjoyed them. Test drove and almost bought a 2001 but it wasn't the right car for me at the time. These are beautiful cars and a lot of fun to drive. The sequential turbo is really fun when the second turbo kicks in. By the way, for all you craving exhaust notes, they really isn't much of one particularly with the turbo. I didn't find the lack of exhaust noise a detriment to the driving experience. Thanks for sharing.
My personal fav of all the RX cars. Just beautiful!
Tuesday morning= petrolicious uploads and I have my coffee ready!
That thing is just gorgeous. The most beautiful Japanese car ever produced, in my opinion, and you're right, it looks great in black.
Props for keeping it original! Not enough of that anymore.
One of my grail cars. Well done - great example and great outlook on driving it (often!)
Thank you, only those who drive a rotary know what a unique experience it can be.
This does not feel like a Petrolicious video whatsoever but hot damn! Thank you for not tainting an FD
Bravo, Sir, what a beautiful car. Just beautiful.
Great car. One of my all-time favourites. I didn't realize we had some many palm trees in Canada (?) :)
You’re a lucky guy to have a Spirit R!! Enjoy it!!
You guys should actually let us HEAR THE GOD*AMN CAR SOMETIMES
If it's stock, the car is pretty quiet, so it's not exactly exciting to hear.
@@tscooter22 even if its quiet id love to hear it, rotaries sound so weird and cool :) making something loud doesnt mean it sounds good
@@milkshake1993 tscooter22 is correct. I'm stock form there is absolutely nothing that you are missing.
@@worldofthunder Like i said, I want to hear that glorious wankel engine, Im not just referring to the exhaust note
LOL I'd sooner listen to my own radio at home than the UNBEARABLE exhaust note of this POS. If ur ears could puke, they would!!!!
Absolutely beautiful. I drive a boring I-4 but it is inside the body of a sexy French Peugeot 407 coupé. Never settle for a boring car.
One of the most beautiful cars of all time
Gran Turismo has made so many people car lovers.
Finally. Been Waitin for this for so long.
Dude has the best RX-7 version there is. Awesome!
gorgeous car! I'd love to review one of these one day soon
I love they show Gran Turismo 2 as this was the game that made me love this car
The peak of Japanese sportscars!
Dream car. Perfect condition. Unmolested. I thank you.
Beautiful automobile. Love Mazdas.
This guy knows what he's talking about! Great great drivers car. From my youth.
Coming from an rx8 and rx7 owner, the spirit r is perfection. Hopefully I’ll be able to invest in one when they become legal.
So gorgeous! Best rx7 ever and personal favorite..wow😍
Stunning. Late front ends are beautiful.
Gorgeous car. Fabulous engine! You’re one lucky guy. And you’re absolutely right, with proper maintenance (which, sadly, relatively few have received), most rotaries will last a long time. 👍
Great film! 👌 Lovely example
What a car. The color and everything 🤩
A car so ahead of it’s time with the design. It will look good in any decade.
My second favorite car of all time! It's so gorgeous I honestly think its design rivals italian exotics.
Absolute beauty in superb condition!
Juicy, juicy. My friend and I were talking amongst each other on when Petrolicious will release another Japanese car video. Here we have it.
I'm saving this one for the big screen and my nice Sony headphones.
Ayee from Vancouver BC! One of the best car scenes in the world is British Columbia. Love this
Beautiful car, especially in black! Would've like to hear it also.... The engine is the soul.
that car is incredible and cool! Love the video!👍👍🙂😉🚗🚗
Is this is Costa Mesa? That Shepard Fairy piece looks super familiar, right off the freeway. If so, I’ll be sure to keep an eye out for this legend to see in person. Another awesome video from you guys.
This is sick. Just sick.
Love the originality.
Best video I’ve seen to date what a car
beautiful cars in the right hands make them more beautiful!
This was my childhood dream car ❤
Nice car kid, definitely the best looking generation RX7.
I have an RX8, 2008, in Cosmopolitan Gray.....and cosmo red bucket seats... She is the 40-Anniversary LIMITED EDITION....It is a beauty... and can it move.....I adore this car...!!!!.
Made my Rotary Engine Day, thanks.
That black colour suits it like a handmade dress. Beautiful!
let us take a moment to appreciate high res car videos.
"I bought it o drive"...That's the best part of it!!!
What a beaut! Spirit R, no less! So jelly.
great video! We like!
Love for this car does not die!
What a find...congrats
The most beautiful RX7...and a special one.
My Mazda dealer has an FC and FD RX-7 sitting in his showroom, both in mint condition. And every time I'm there it breaks my heart to see the "not for sale" signs lying on their dashboards ... :D
Cool story bro (no, i'm not being a dick, that was actually a cool story)
Nothing In comparison but I just bought a Mazda 3 hatch because the engine of the Ford Probe(had 2 ) 😂 ❤️ I realize how it sounds. I think for 15+ years I've been looking at Mazda and I finally got here officially. Cars are different now but I feel their passion every time I drive. Mazda really is not only underated but a company that is strong and believes in it's product. It's impressive
I normally don’t like Japanese cars but I love this car, always have. It still looks great today. Saw one in silver the other day and was like “Shit, that is just a cool looking car”.
The best performance engine there is.
I love the short gear shift.
Such a beautiful car. Wish I heard it rev high though. When I was 16, FDRX7 was the poster on my wall. My first turbo car was an FCRX7. Someday I’ll own one. But no one here in Maui can work on them and tune them:((
Maybe the existence of modern car today with wankel engine barely extict. But the spirit of rotary still lives on
