I'd take the FD anyday but hell i would never diss the FC
We were strictly talking about the looks. The FD looks undeniably better to us
there was also the FB/SA Rx-7, which had a nifty look of its own, FD's look good as a reasonably modern look, but very 90's bubbly style here and there, which does date it a bit.. personally I prefer the FC looks wise (and the dash cluster on a S4 is much more interesting than the FDs tbh), though it is undoubtedly 80's, inside and out.
though, fun fact, the FC headlight action is incredibly nifty, it's a slightly more complicated mechanism than the FD/FB and NA miata/Mx-5, but it keeps the headlight always pointed forward, but it moves so quick you'd never notice, hence I guess they went back to the basic tilting pop-up on the FD.
The '86~'91 2nd gen FC3S was designed to be a Porsche 924 fighter and Mazda succeeded (you can notice the similar silhouette). I happen to think for its time it looks very handsome and classy both inside and out. The after minor change version is especially the SEX!
When you guys said the prior was ugly my heart broke. FC3S is my dream
Ha! Y’all are rad, thanks for the shout out. 🙏🙏 But frankly, that EE guy is clueless.
Yes, yes and not to mention that grey hair that no one seems to notice or talk about.

That turbo whistle though
Where? Can you give me the time please?
Funny, cuz I've never noticed my FD making that much turbo noise when stock. But then again it only stayed in stock form for a very short period of time so perhaps my memory is a bit murky lol

@Michael Pullins no you learn a good deal about your engine and timely service it
Mine have been (4 of them)... can't say that about my Porsches, Bentleys or German cars... but maybe that's just me.😁
I really miss driving my ‘94.. it was a fun car but gave lots of headaches. I loved the jet engine sound it made.
i had an 86 single turbo version..variable boost and HKS exhaust, what a beauty, and soo fast
@allstarshinobi99 fast is relative. If that's the only sports car he's ever driven, then I'm sure it felt fast to him. Don't knock it.
Smoked out tail lights were a very 90s trend and it was very very cool. The styling has aged extremely well and it's still a gorgeous car. You look at what Japan was putting out in the early to mid 90s. Most everything was pretty damn sexy. Really nice shapes and curves. I look at the styling of Japanese cars now and I'm like "What 25yr old gamer is styling these things?"
This and the NSX are so so good looking.
I like them more than a Ferrari/ Lamborghini/ Porsche from the 90s.
They look even better now ... One day I'll have a NSX and RX7 FD
I'm drawing a blank here but I don't recall any other 90's car that had smoked out taillights. IIIRC the Tauros had a black outline but the taillights were not blacked out.
I know the latest Civic is a great car but it looks like something out of Transformers to me. And they're for adults?

More of these used car reviews please. That's the first time I've watched a review about the rotary engine. I remember the rotary engine being mazdas unique selling point. Might not have worked out but at least it was innovative.
Sounds a bit like the whine of a super charger.
I'm not certain "innovative" is the word you want. Definitely different, but several manufacturers tried to do something with the Wankels, everyone else just decided it wasn't a good idea. Mazda kind of went "in a penny in a pound" and ran with them for a while until the overwhelming suck finally overcame their momentum. Emissions too. Emissions and suck. The rx7 was a real neat little car though, I'd kill for one with an inline 6, so it'd be a prettier Mazda made Z car, which would rock.
The 1st Gen RX-7 and even Second Gen had decent power for the size. Also the motor was able to sit low and behind the front axle for better weight distribution.
The negative is. The motor is hot, and a lot of that heat transfers into the cabin. My right leg would often sweat from the heat.
@@Kraziken0 Hot. Also horrendously inefficient. Also no torque. Also terrible emissions what with the whole "let's inject oil into the combustion area" thing. Also the whole reliability thing. Basically they're a cool idea but a bad motor.
@@padrescout The non turbo second gen and first gen cars were more reliable. Had a coworker that had over 200k on his second gen. Unfortunately the 3rd gen had a a lot of problems with the complex vacuum system for the twin turbo. And in general not enough cooling from the factory.
@@Kraziken0 My buddy Aarons mom got a second gen. It had electrical gremlins for the 5 years I knew about her having it. This is ..entitled housewife's fun toy she bought brand new and only had serviced at the dealership. .. Also I think we have different standards of reliable. Reliable is not a word I would ever associate with a wankel. It's fine if you like them, aint nobody says you can't. I think they're neat - not sure I'ds use the word like, but I find them interesting - but if you want a weird-as car power-plant thats spinny and out of the ordinary .. but good. Put a Pratt and Whitney in something. They're small, dead reliable, make a different sound. ... melt the road with exhaust :D The kids will love them.

I was surprised when I saw the odometer...and it's in km! And the car looks like it's in pristine condition w/ original paint. I salute the owner. You just don't see bone stock FD in such condition and such low mileage it's like spotting an unicorn!
That Racing Mica Yellow paint is a bitch to maintain.....It's prone to fade under extreme sun and heat
I would have been nervous to drive that car. It's basically irreplaceable.
Such a gorgeous car, but it's nearly impossible to find them in stock form now.
I got a stock one, other than a downpipe and exhaust.
So..... it's not stock.
Not really, 2 on BAT now and good history but you need to be willing to travel depending on where you live- but this is always the case. bringatrailer.com/listing/1994-mazda-rx-7-17/
Better than stock. Downpipe removes the precat and a ton of heat from the engine bay. Also easy to replace with stock if you want.
Fcking ricers.... they ruin everything ;-;
I smile for days after a 20 minute drive in my 93 rx7. love it...
Oh and half of my rpm range is not turbo lag, it comes on very very early.

Love your channel guys. You do it in such a refreshing and different way which makes it funny and very informative. Please do more used car reviews as well. To be honest, any type of car review you guys do, is a great watch. Keep it going.
Love the used [classics] car reviews. Understanding that which came before, inspired current designers and which generated excitement years ago has value. The RX-7 had Godzilla status on US streets in the mid-nineties for all of the reasons laid out in your video. A co-worker had one in red at the time and it was pure joy to see that work of art in the parking lot on a daily basis. He loved it, too.
So glad I found this 2 years late, lol. I've wanted one of those ever since my best friend got one in high school! Such a cool classic car!
Interesting fact... the classic 70’s AMC Pacer actually incorporated the rotary (Wankel) engine into its design. It’s absence of that engine led to its demise. Well ... not just that alone.
Always have loved the RX-7’s. always will. Particularly these years. Great review Guys. Thanks
Now I know why I had a nice 4th of July. Even if I don't live in the US. Thanks guys.
I have a 93. I've owned it for 20 years. 173,000 miles on two engines. It's AWESOME. Stock except for some reliability upgrades. Aluminum air separation tank. Precat removal. Things like that.
I disagree about not wanting the Touring model. It softens the car just a bit and makes it more livable to drive all the time and on road trips. It still handles great, but just softens it a little.
I also disagree about the sunroof. It doesn't steal space, it adds a little it seems. Most importantly tipping it removes buffeting in the small cabin at moderate speeds with windows down and increases air flow in the cabin at highway speeds without making much noise.
I also prefer the look without a spoiler. Keeps it clean and perfect.
If you have the means, I highly recommend picking one up.
We have a 1992 M5 that still runs well. It’s at our home in Germany, so great to take it on the curves of the country roads with the top down. Good ole fashioned 90s driving.
I was born in the mid-80s. I maintain, this thing is one of the best looking cars that has been introduced in my lifetime. Favourite angle: 3:55.
This and original NSX....probably top two.
Yeah this is one of the best looking cars ever.
You guys have been my favorite RUclips show for a few months now. Truly hyped for each new video. The yuri-Jakub combo is the best!

This was the video that got me hooked on your Chanel almost 2 years now 🥺
Before I even watch this...YES! It is STILL great after 25 years!!!
I've had several older RX-7' from the 80's. Loved them all!!
What is this? Regular Car Reviews?
Kidding. Love it!
3:26 The RX-7 was not the first production car with sequential turbocharging. The first was the Porsche 959 which started production years prior. It was build in low numbers and sold for huge amounts of money, but still won awards for the worlds fastest street legal "production car", so it should count in my eyes. This is loosely based on my current knowledge from this very moment, so correct me if im wrong. Otherwise, great review. Love seeing old cars reviewed :) Both of you give so much live to this old format. Doesn't seem scripted.
I believe Skyline GT-Rs, at least the R32 generation, had sequential turbos and beat Mazda to production by a couple of years. Sequential turbos were a thing that companies did before turbos all went ball-bearing and had other modern improvements. A well chosen modern single turbo can give the fast spool up of the small turbo, but high CFM of the bigger turbo. As a result, many people who modify sequential dual turbo cars end up converting to a single turbo.
I believe the R32 was a twinturbo (non-sequential). The Toyota Supra MKIV is sequentially turbocharged, but entered production later than the 959 and RX-7.
959 was the first, but the sequential system didn't work as well as on the mazda, probably because it was made in the 80's
@@buubised I don't know how fair it is to compare the 959 to the RX-7. The 959 was produced solely for homologation rules, and less than 400 were ever produced. There were over 800,000 RX-7s produced. 959s weren't even street legal in the United States until 1999, 13 years after the car came out, and 7 years after they stopped production. RX-7s were street legal from the beginning of their production run, which was considerably longer than the 959 as well.
One of my favourite cars of all time! I'd love to see a classic JDM shootout from you guys: RX7, NSX, Skyline GTR, Supra, Evo and STI battle royale!

Man this car looks so good, especially the rear end and this angle 8:10. I can not get over it💛
Beautiful car! Great review, I'd enjoy watching you review other classics, perhaps even compare them to their modern counterparts
I used to have an RX7 convertible in Black. It was an 88. Not as racey as the last design but that car got me a lot of action!! It was the early to mid 2000s and the car was sexy as a runway model. By then no one knew whether it was some exotic car or a Beemer unless they were an enthusiast. I had to change everything but the engine and usually more than twice, but it was so beautiful and fun to drive on PCH with the top down that it made it all very worth the trouble. Thanks for the vids guys!
Classic car reviews are the way to goo!! (all your videos are great) Keep it up!!

BTW, Jacob... totally feel ya on being tall and fitting into a small car. I'm 6'2" and used to own a Crossfire SRT6 (Great Car!) But I literally did not fit. Everyday I had speedbumps and would hit my head, and while living in Vegas I had a valet park my car. When I got it back, they had adjusted the seat, and it took me like an hour to get it back to Just Right, cause it was the ONLY position I would fit, hahaha! Totally Loved and miss that car... =,(
I have owned a Miata in the past, she was a metallic cherry red with an inlay of crimson. It was BEAUTIFUL, but I'm glad I got the drop top because I'm a little over 6F-5ins tall and the whole upper part of my head stuck out the roof. It was hilarious to drive around and a great little car to own. She met her end when a semi ran a red and I slammed into the back wheels of the trailer. That little car took the hit, protected me, and went out with dignity. God I miss that car.
I recently did a review on the FD RX-7 and MAN did I love it. Although I did barely fit in it...

I think the first car with sequential turbo was the porsche 959 some years before rx-7.
Awesome! One quick note, both turbos are the same size HT21 turbines. Just divided and different Rpm engagement.
Yea, I was about to say the same thing. Except they are HT-12, not 21. Twin Hitachi HT-12 turbos w/51mm turbine & 57mm compressor.

That engine is a piece of art which deserves a place not in a museum, but in the Valhalla! It is not the most reliable or the most efficient, but maybe one of the most endearing.
That engine is a piece of shit which deserves a place in a junkyard. Prettiest car of the 90s. Ls swap it.
@@anthonyhodgson2934 Your bain dead if you think an LS swap is a good idea. The whole car was designed solely with the rotary in mind. Doing an engine swap will completely destroy the weight distribution and handling, not to mention it will most likely be slower aswell. If your too dumb to know how to handle a Rotary then just stay the hell away from the car altogether. Get a shitty C4 Corvette if you want an American V8 in a 90's coupe.
@@dirtyd9219 I don't have one lol. Swapping it makes it much much faster but it ruins the handling characteristics of it if you put in an LS since it's so much heavier than the Rotary. I suppose the correct thing to do would be to put something similar to the weight of the rotary into it so that the suspension still does what it was meant to do. I only said LS swap because that is common for these kinds of vehicles and there are many kits that you can get it done with. You are brain-dead if you think that it will be slower with a Corvette motor in it. But I will stay away even though these cars are gorgeous I don't think the shell is worth as much as they charge for it and the Rotary is a ticking Time Bomb so I'd never want a complete one. I will stick to my 90's Hondas Nissans and Ford's as I always have. By the way there was no need to insult me personally I never insulted anyone only the flawed engineering of the rotary motor.

5:19 FC was ugly?!?!😲 Pretty sure the RX-8 was the only weird looker, but to each their own.😕
Richard Exactly.
RX8 can look really nice but it needs to be lowered a bit with some decent wheels to do it imo. The FD looks downright amazing bone stock though.
@@Saboda53 I have an RX-8 in black, not as fast as the RX-7 but I say a much friendlier handle and a smoother and comfortable ride in my opinion.
The 8 is an amazing design
I may be biased because I own a couple FC's but I think in comparison to the FD's modern classic look the FC's really scream period 80's. I think that makes them cool in there own rate but I think we can all agree they are underrated.
i have two rx7s-a 1984 12A fb that i daily and a 1993 touring fd that a drive a few times a month. they are both incredible, and modified only so much to keep their life support in tip-top shape. no cosmetic changes other than suspension and exhaust. the fd truly rules. it's pushing ~300hurspurrs to the wheels and is a blast to rip around in. after 25 years, it still looks great and throws people back in the seat when the second turbo's boost hits.
BEST. REVIEW. EVER. From you guys!
