ChaosphereIX I remember in one of Doug’s videos he mentioned that older cars just don’t bring in the same amount of views as the modern cars do. And when it’s your business, views and clicks are very important. But I really enjoy the older cars, it’s a good way to mix it up a bit. (Former R34 and current G35 owner here).
I've always wanted one of these since I was a teenager... I could still recall callin' up Nissan like 20+ years ago, and chewin' them out for discontinuing the 300ZX. The car was FANTASTIC, and NOTHING is wrong with it. I was hopin' they would mass-manufacture it make as as many of them as there were Corollas. Like a MILLION of these vehicles a year. They just coldly said to me, that the 350z will be 'replacing' it. I told 'em to just go straight to HELL. I shure gave 'em an EARFUL!!! 😡
😁The 300zx wasn't trying to compete with the other 90's Japanese Legends... It was the reason the other 90's Japanese cars were devoloped the way they were. The 300zx set the bar in 1989-90. The other companies followed and also delivered amazing high peformance machines❤❤
Very true, the Zed TT was the original. Mitsubishi outdid them with the 3000GT VR4/GTO Twin Turbo, they're so much faster it makes the Z feel like it's going backwards
@@KagemushaRonin yes, better handling but lackluster acceleration. The GTO was far and away faster in a straight line. ruclips.net/video/fwps3TVcJMM/видео.html - stock GTO MR beating an R32 Skyline GT-R over mile www.motortrend.com/news/virtual-velocity/ - Z32 TT - 13.9@102.0 vs VR4 at 13.5@101.7mph. Again, show me a stock Zed TT that can run that stock. I'm sorry but the evidence is overwhelming. The VR-4 has 3-5 car lengths on the Z32 TT at the quarter mile at the same trap. I think a couple Z32s have trapped 105mph stock, but Edmunds ran a VR4 to a 105mph trap as well. They can trap up to 104-105mph with a good driver, but that ET difference is huge. The 1G VR4 is a driver's race against the Zed, the 2G VR4 was just plain faster. In the UK we have the GTO MR which runs 12s@106-108mph stock. The 300ZX TT is legendary and a much better balanced car. The VR-4 is faster stock to stock, not that it matters since the Z has better aftermarket support. I'd take either.
@@KagemushaRonin I'm pretty sure the Z was on C/D 10 best car list for ten years in a row or so. I think they're awesome cars. I just get tired of people sleeping on the GTOs acceleration. The MR beat the Supra TT easily. Mitsu was aiming for the Skyline GTRs. It is nose heavy and doesn't handle all that well. Mate owns two, they're both factory spec down to the tires and both are extremely fast, 2019 fast.
@Trevon Adams I show that link because 13.2@102.7 is extremely fast for a stock car. My mate owns two. Hasn't had any problems besides regular maintenance. Have you ever worked on a VG30DETT? Nightmare. I like all of those cars. You forget that the J spec GTO MR / 94-96 Dodge Stealth Twin Turbo can hit high 12s stock, though 13.1-13.4@102-105 seems to be the norm for a well running stock one. www.300zx.cl/ga/300zx/images/rtt10.jpg - AGAIN, R/T had .2 ET difference to the Z and they were going the 99mph. It also lost on a track too - www.300zx.cl/ga/300zx/images/rtt07.jpg - came in dead last. Bad drivers imo. Here's a modded 350Z, whose mods easily make it faster than a stock Z32 TT, getting dragged by a STOCK 1995 Dodge Stealth Twin Turbo: ruclips.net/video/rjtS_EnrW-0/видео.html It's actually the TQ, extra HP and gearing that makes it easily faster from 0-155 (Z32 TT s limited). I've seen that mate I was an adult in the 90s. Once Mitsu came out with the updated engine, the Z had no chance and fell behind.
These tears about the automatic just kills me at times lol. After awhile ppl need to realize not everyone is going to be shifting all day. Agree that a transmission upgrade is a must tho. A very beautiful car especially when the right body mods are made.
No way! I subscribe a few days ago after creeping you for months and now I get a REVIEW OF MY CAR. I wish you a mistletoe in your back pocket for everyone that hates on you in gratitude! If you ever want to drive a modded one in manual, let me know
I graduated high school in ‘94 and this car was at the top of my “...when I get out of college” dream car list. Compared to everything else built at that time, the 300ZX had such clean lines and interior. All the car mags raved about the manual trans and the ergonomics... and, if memory serves, it was always marketed as a GT car... not necessarily a pure sports car. The main competition, at least in all the car mag feature tests was the Mitsubishi 3000 GT VR4 and the Mazda RX-7. They didn’t even put the Corvette in the same league as this. The NSX seemed to be more in the Porsche 911 category of the day. Great review! Definitely brought me back... Keep up the good work, boys!
Hey Ryan I graduated from high school in 1995 and also remember it and its contemparies being compared in the publications. I am working on buying an early to mid 90s JDM classic this month.
muiyan ...sadly, no. Got married, had kids, and as is generally the case, sports cars became much less important. Fast forward about 20 years and I’m around 6 months from being kid free... sooooo... could be one in the near future... 😎👍🏻
It was on the Road and Track top 10 cars like every year it was sold. Or maybe it was C&D I forget, but one of the magazines had this Top 10 list each year, and the 300zx was there every year I think.
I remember seeing these new in 1990, it blew my mind, it was so sexy and ahead of it’s time. I’ve often wondered since then, why in America did we have all these small sports cars when gas was 2 cents a gallon, but today gas is $1,000 a gallon but we all drive these juggernaut trucks and suvs 🤔
This is why I love TSP. If you asked me which car from my youth I would want a reivew on, this is it! I used to look for the extra vents on the lower front end as his was unique to the twin turbo. Styling was unmatched back then and I have to agree that this is a Nissan classic. Another great review!!
One of my favorite cars of all-time. I was kinda triggered by RCR's review of it. I would take it over an Rx7, but NSX over this. 300zx is absolutely a timeless design.
As a tt 300zx owner I agree with this Personally the z is the best looking but I'd rate it like this 1. Nsx 2.300zx tt 3.fd rx7 4.3000gt vr4 5.mk4 supra
Nissan actually was one of the first companies to employ CAD in the styling of the Z32 which is why the look feel very modern despite this being a 90s vehicle. While the Skyline stole most of its fame, the 300ZX twin turbo still is a classic car in many circles.
I don't think so dude. CAD had been used for automobile design since around 1980. And CAD as a drafting process was employed in industry since the early 1970s. I remember learning about CAD in computer science classes in 1981, though I also learned manual drafting (pencil and paper) at the same time. Also read that the BMW 850i was first designed in entirely CAD beginning in 1985
This has been my dream car for a very long time! Just very hard to find a nice one and the fact the engine is so large, working on it seems like quite the project
One of my favorite cars of all-time. Like the Supra and NSX, this car was ahead of it's time and it aged very well. I love the smooth, clean styling. Front end is sick. Still looks good.
Wait a sec, I am actually in LOVE with how they attached so many of the controls to the dash behind the wheel! Everything is so easy to see, easy to reach, and somehow still looks really modern/cool. I propose more cars do this!
I remember when they released this sports car....it was a very clean sleek design when it released. I remember admiring the styling back in the day. Thanks for the retro video...there is a company in NJ where they drop in a ls motor and hopefully a manual....one take you tube video made the conversion seem really cool
The Mitsubishi 3000gt is definitely gonna be a classic if it isn’t already. It’s so under appreciated. Can’t tell you how many necks I broke when me and my dad drove my 92 sl home from New Hampshire to Rhode Island. I really feel you on the height problem. But luckily the power seats let you raise and lower your seat as well so i can fit perfectly in my 3000gt.
Welcome to the club ! I have a Red w/ black leather 92 300zx TT manual with 86,000 km(53,500 miles) on it sitting covered in my garage. Stebro dual sweeping 2 inch stainless exhaust. Centerforce clutch, KN air, chipped, w/boost control, polished rims. Had since 93 and bought then with 5,000 km. 390 hp at the wheels. 340 ft lbs torque. Never seen rain or snow. Just can’t part with it. Draws admiration whenever I take it out. This car will always be georgeous.
@@archief1590 that's how my father feels about it all. Although he has much nicer cars now but he just feels special when driving around the Z either because it's one of the few remaining all original ones left or it could be the timeless design. People love the Z more than his other cars as well.
Used to own a 1995 3000gt vr4. That car ripped down the streets and was packed with technology that was way ahead of it's time. Awd, 4 wheel steer, active aero, adaptive suspension, dual intercoolers, early 90s 3000gts also had active/adaptive exhaust. Would love to see a review on that car
I have a 1990 Right drive twin turbo for sale it has the automatic with the button on the shifter labeled power and hold this is a stronger factory built transmission in power mode it shifts at a higher RPM in hold you have to manually shift it, this allows the turbos to spool making this car faster than any of the other factory Z32's including all the manual shift cars. Asking 10k
Nice job, guys. That was my favorite car back in the 80's & 90's. Well worth the watch. As for the 90's Supra, you must drive one to really respect it. It's insanely quick (Turbo) & handles like a dream. 300ZX, Supra Turbo, RX-7, C4 Vette then 3000GT - for me. Keep them coming.
Wow, I don't want you to get depressed or anything, but you should look up these things called 'Lamborghinis' and 'Ferraris'... they had some really cool cars in the 80's and 90's. You really missed out, man...
This is why I still keep my 2017 WRX stock. I want to look at it 20 yrs from now and have kids wonder how crappy and basic but how fun it is to drive all-year around
Possible classics (in different price points) 1. Audi R8 Manual 2. 370z Nismo (gen 1) 3. Civic Type-R FK8 4. Evo X 5. Cadillac CTS-V Sportwagon 6. S2000 AP2
I own a 1993 300zx Base Model Auto. Going to convert it to a manual as soon as possible. Love the car but it’s PAINFUL to work on at times. I love this car so much though. Definitely an underrated car.
One of my favorite cars of all time. That thing is SO MINT!!! Too bad it's an auto because no one would really want that unless they were going to do a swap... I would love to have a Z32 TT manual... Epic! And yes, I agree. TIMELESS!!! It's always been and always will be good looking!!
Lambo stole the lights. They even say. Nissan in them that Lambo created a trim piece to cover. With that said, those later Diablos like the SE are my favorite from the brand. The sound of the old V12 is glorious.
As an Aussie I am very glad I get to finally hear people saying "300 zed ex". Plus "Nissan" pronounced correctly on top of that, finally some videos not from the US so things are said correctly.
Thank God you pronounce Nissan and Zed correctly, a good fun review fellas, they're a very enjoyable car and definitely look cool, I had a 2+2 n/a manual and even that was fun, had a full 2.5 inch x piped exhaust and sounded insane....the drone was also insane lol.
Used to own one in the late 90s/early 00s in the exact same colour. It was a naturally aspirated, 5-gear 2+2 US import (bought from a Dutch Apache pilot who bought it and imported it). Always was my dream car since it was introduced and after recovering from cancer, this was my gift to myself. If I could get an original one, not tuned, in good shape, I'd buy one instantly.
Guys I am 45 and I was high school when this car came out. Nissan was expensive at the time. It was almost the same price of Lexus SC400. My parents bought me Mitsubishi 3000GT VR4. Awd 4ws and active aero kit. It was $8k cheaper but Mitsubishi was a great company at the time.
I own a 1990 TT and I can confirm that the cupholder hack works. Only annoying part is with a stick shift the drink is kind of in the way for fourth gear. No big deal. Never spilled a drop in there.
Yuri is 100% right about the interior. This tester's interior is so blend and dormant. Most gorgeous and more importantly practical interior/and definitely purposful cockpit up to 2019, even better than the 1990s BMW 8 Series.
My high school ride (I had manual)… I saved for years after it being my favorite looking car in Gran Turismo and never as long as live will forget how good it felt driving to school the first day in 2000. It still turned heads as a 1990. Was fast, fun, t-tops and looked very aggressive for its time. Will always be my favorite car.
I own a '93 300ZX Twin Turbo -- red, manual, pristine. It gets looks and approving comments everywhere it goes. It was one of my dream cars back in the day and now I have one! :-) A few things: 1. The manual makes a huge difference. The shifting is smooth and precise, and it's much easier to keep the turbos spooled. Try one if you can. 2. My brakes are firm and responsive, though they can fade after aggressive use. I'm in agreement that there might be a problem with the brakes on your heritage car. 3. The '93 and earlier models have a different, better looking (in my opinion) rear spoiler, more like the one you wished for in this video. The spoiler changed in '94. Thought you should know that. 4. The doors are like that because the seatbelts are anchored to them. This was due to safety regulations at the time which mandated passive restraints in the form of either an airbag or automatic seatbelts. Since the 300ZX didn't have airbags when it was launched in 1990 (it first got them in '91) they had to go with the seatbelt solution. The choices there were belts anchored on a motorized track that moved forward when you opened the door and retracted over your shoulder when you closed the door. (Your 240SX might have had these.) But since the 300ZX had T-tops, they couldn't do that so they went with a solution where the belts were anchored to the door, with the idea that you could leave them buckled and slide in behind them with the door open. In practice this was a terrible solution and nobody used them that way. But that explains the pillars on the doors. 5. The T-tops are very cool and something that sets the 300ZX apart from contemporaries like the RX-7 and Supra. Nothing better on a nice day than popping the tops and going for a drive, or to a Cars-and-Coffee where *everyone* wants to look inside. Very dramatic. It's a shame you drove around all day and didn't take them off! Anyway, awesome car. Timeless indeed. Thanks for the review. Oh, and it's "300 *Zee* X"!
@@ralphsmallblock4367 "Corvette c4 was built like a real race car" *smh* Instead of expensive and quality sturdy steel, Corvettes use cheap and flaky fiberglass everywhere.
Great review guys! This was my favorite Z. The generation(s) before it to include the Datsun were also amazing. All this Z needs are a set of BBS rims! I feel like the Japanese car industry really failed the consumer when they stopped making the “real” Z, Supra and RX-7. Nissan has screwed the Pathfinder too...bad decisions!
Loved that ride. Totally a timeless classic. Interior looks cool with that t-top and the cockpit style controls. The strange handbrake sticking out into the passenger leg room is probably because this was designed to be a right hand drive. The hack with the ashtray totally counts as a cupholder pass. This review is great but missing the dog, watermelon an the drone shots from the other one you drove.
Mmmmmm I’m so happy 😬, a Z Twin Turbo. The automatic is not going to give you the experience that you’d get from the stick. I’ve owned both and I ignore the auto when shopping for a Z. Also the 1996 has been known to feel slower than the previous years because of the discontinued variable camshaft timing on the Twin Turbo. I personally love everything about the 1994, it’s perfect. And yes that was also my cup holder and it worked perfectly. The rear spoiler was flat from 90-93 on the Twin Turbo. In 94 the seat belts move from the door to the car interior side thing which made the doors lighter.🤗 I love this car, and Nissan came out with this first and then the others copied 😶. The others redesign came out later thus giving them a platform to be just a slight better depending on who you talk to. I think Nissan will bring this epic design back later when everything is electric (lithium).😬
z32luvr ,95 is great as well but I don’t like the front bumper. They made it all one color which makes it look cheap to me. The 90-94 has dark gray strip that stretches between both of the fog lights which in my opinion looks better. But it’s not a big deal 😬. You won’t notice it much on the darker colors like black or dark green.
I have a feeling that a manual, stock BRZ/T86/FRS will be a future classic in 20 years, especially since many modify them and they are already reaching rock bottom prices on the used market.
You guys are the next big thing! You cover everything you need know and don't just keep agreeing to each other on every point you need to cover. I went back to like all the videos I had seen cuz I couldn't stop binge watching your reviews! Good shit
Derek a lot of people get rid of the four wheel steering on the z because it can be unpredictable at times even with as little as high 300 low 400 power numbers, and anything more than that it’s a straight deathwish
1) NSX 2) Supra 3) 300zx 4) RX-7 fd 5) Eclipse GSX 6) Integra Type-R 7) Prelude 8) 3000GT VR4...not mentioned GT-R bc we never got it, but it’s prob tied for #2. The mustangs, camaros, corvettes of the time are prob not in the top 25.
At the time, this car was the nicest most modern looking car in this price range by far. When i first saw it in a parking lot it seemed like the most beautiful car i had ever seen. When I see it now, although slightly dated, it still looks good. Thats an achievement in itself.. The NSX was also gorgeous, but WAY more money. Throughout those years. I had 2 300ZX non turbos and 1 300ZX twin turbo. All manuals. I modded all 3 with the high intake high output stainless steel exhaust and swapped out the computer for a remapped computer. The non turbos only gained like 22 hp but the twin turbo gained 100hp bringing it to 400Hp. It was very fast ! If I'm not mistaken, these twin turbos had Super HICAS four-wheel-steering. At slow speeds the rear wheels would steer opposite to the front and at fast speed they would steer in the same direction, pretty cool. The only car that gives me that same feeling today (besides the 1/4 million dollar exotics like Ferrari, etc., it the Jag F-type.
Great review guys. Just a side note , whenever you are stuck with an automatic tranny , always utilize the option it allows you to work it manually. You can hold your revs where the engine is most effective and efficient. Use the engine to brake. (I use this especially on larger vehicles live minivan or SUV when going on steeper downgrades to eliminate brake fatigue and to be more gentle on the brakes as well. That’s what trucks do)As well for corners you have constant power that will squat your rear end as you give slight acceleration improving traction. Also reduction in that ‘limbo’ lag time when the auto wants to down shift. You eliminate auto down shift when you give some acceleration. Overall you are smarter then an analog transmission at knowing your power bands and how it should handle. ALWAYS GO MANUAL OPTION. Lol. Take care guys. Thanks for providing a great channel

@@vettevr4thez516
the 300GT was only .6 seconds faster in the 0-60 stock for stock. The Z had better handling over all due to its super hicas system.
@@KagemushaRonin yes, better handling but lackluster acceleration. The GTO was far and away faster in a straight line.
ruclips.net/video/fwps3TVcJMM/видео.html - stock GTO MR beating an R32 Skyline GT-R over mile
www.motortrend.com/news/virtual-velocity/ - Z32 TT - 13.9@102.0 vs VR4 at 13.5@101.7mph. That's 4 car lengths at the same trap.
ruclips.net/video/vFEYkgOZdC4/видео.html - stock VR4, 13.2@102.7mph. No stock ZTT can do that.
archiv.3000gt.org/viewtopic.php?t=2582 - stock 1999 VR4, 13.4 ET.
Here's a modded 350Z, whose mods easily make it faster than a stock Z32 TT, getting dragged by a STOCK 1995 Dodge Stealth Twin Turbo: ruclips.net/video/rjtS_EnrW-0/видео.html
It's actually the TQ, extra HP and gearing that makes it easily faster from 0-155 (Z32 TT s limited). I've seen that mate I was an adult in the 90s. Once Mitsu came out with the updated engine, the Z had no chance and fell behind.

@Ryan Did you end up buying it though?
muiyan ...sadly, no. Got married, had kids, and as is generally the case, sports cars became much less important. Fast forward about 20 years and I’m around 6 months from being kid free... sooooo... could be one in the near future... 😎👍🏻
It was on the Road and Track top 10 cars like every year it was sold. Or maybe it was C&D I forget, but one of the magazines had this Top 10 list each year, and the 300zx was there every year I think.
lol can you do a review?
Sorry...when I said "Another great review" I meant to say "This review. So Good! ;-)"
One of my favorite cars of all-time. I was kinda triggered by RCR's review of it. I would take it over an Rx7, but NSX over this. 300zx is absolutely a timeless design.

Also read that the BMW 850i was first designed in entirely CAD beginning in 1985
The Skyline didn't steal its fame considering basically no one in the West knew of its existence until another decade.
This has been my dream car for a very long time! Just very hard to find a nice one and the fact the engine is so large, working on it seems like quite the project

Oh my god why did it take you guys 22 years to review this car?! Iv been waiting this whole time
I own a '93 300ZX Twin Turbo -- red, manual, pristine. It gets looks and approving comments everywhere it goes. It was one of my dream cars back in the day and now I have one! :-) A few things:

Yes. '94 was the best year. They also had HICAS, staggered wheels, and a boatload of aftermarket bolt-ons.
Orcanislupus 1995 is the best year
z32luvr ,95 is great as well but I don’t like the front bumper. They made it all one color which makes it look cheap to me. The 90-94 has dark gray strip that stretches between both of the fog lights which in my opinion looks better. But it’s not a big deal 😬. You won’t notice it much on the darker colors like black or dark green.
Canadian spec 300ZX's never had the seatbelts on the doors
I have a feeling that a manual, stock BRZ/T86/FRS will be a future classic in 20 years, especially since many modify them and they are already reaching rock bottom prices on the used market.

You never talked about the four-wheel steering which is what the 300zx was famous for?
late 1980s Honda Prelude was the only car famous for 4 wheel steering. And even my 1986 RX7 had a form of passive 4 wheel steering engineered into it.
Derek a lot of people get rid of the four wheel steering on the z because it can be unpredictable at times even with as little as high 300 low 400 power numbers, and anything more than that it’s a straight deathwish
