Most Underrated 90s JDM Legend? Immaculate Widebody 300ZX Build at Gridlife

- Nissan’s 300zx might be one of the most unloved, and arguably underrated 90s era JDM halo cars. Sure, they were hard to work on. And maybe didn’t make the same power as a 2jz could. But as with any car, there are still guys like Colton here, who dedicate themselves to the platform strictly for the love of the game. And that’s how you get a modernized, super clean looking example like the one in front of us here.

Great guys now I wont be able to buy one for a couple grand cause the price is gonna go up.. Thx
What is the name of your outro song, please?
hi Larry! have you thought of making the same sticker but with a variaton for the cars you feature? would be more special for the ones who get to be shown here!!

Iv'e been out of the scene for many years now. But i must say, THAT 300 is freakin BEAUTIFUL cannon!💪🏽👍🏽👍🏽
Everyone: We want lambo doors
Lamborghini: We want Nissan headlights
That's not an ordinary Nissan headlight.. Z32 was way ahead of its time
@@joestuehmer7967 but if you search the part number on both cars it comes back the same..
@@killfase01 Yea but he made it seem like the z32 was just a regular Nissan car when it's not.. Name another car that had 300hp twin turbo back in 1990 with suede interior, power seats power mirrors
@@joestuehmer7967 Facts
@@joestuehmer7967 its main competitors, the supra, r32, porch, 3000gt and rx7 fd soon as it made the seen. For those companies at the time the only mission was to be better than porch but with reasonable pricing. That's why those cars are so sought after. Cheap reliability with the performance to match. Shoot an Mitsubishi starion with its single turbo came with suede interior and automatic climate control standard.
As a z32 owner, he is completely right. It’s a difficult engine to work on and it takes dedication to start wrenching BUT it’s capable of making excellent power if built correctly. Cleanest Z I’ve seen. Mad props
Yeah but the funnest cars are always hard to work on, I had a Z32 when I was younger but mine was NA and I was always working on it and my grandpa said he'd buy me a new car if I agreed to get rid of it because it was always taken apart in his driveway and I happily declined... And I just got a 5 cylinder MK6 which is another pain in the ass car to work on but it's stock and already alot of fun and next I want to try my hand at rotary engines and get a first gen and keep it 12b and carbureted... If you love the car enough it out weighs the negatives of being hard to work on
@@isaacshively6705 - I took my 91 NA motor out, painted the bay, dropped it in, and it only runs on 3 cylinders now. While the motor was out, I replaced every seal imagine able and removed the cams to rebuild the lifters. Sadly, I can’t drive it and it’s come a long way. The end result is totally worth it as I’ve built it the way I want it. Car only came with engine and trans and was basically a shell. Haven’t given up yet, just taking a break. IG is 3oozx.na
@@meangreenrt7608 well good luck bro, I completely understand when you truly love your car you never give up on it because it can be fixed and is probably something simple and if you have up and sold it you wouldn't get near what it's worth to you and the next guy will figure out it needed a ten dollar part and basically just stole a brand new car plus that's half the fun of any car you get as a project is working on it yourself and that's why most project cars are never truly done
Check your PTU connections! So common for them to drop cylinders, just by making eye contact! LOL
@@joemama9005 - I have no compression on the driver side head (cyl 2, 4, and 6). Removed lifters to verify and the valves aren’t seating correctly. Either they’re bent or the springs are gone. Has fuel, and spark (new spark plugs, new injectors, OEM coils, etc). Car used to run before I pulled it out but hey, things happen 🙏🏽 not bummed cause the valves don’t look bent so hopefully I won’t have to get my heads redone. Appreciate the feedback 👍🏽
Autofocus is definitely the most highbrow program on Hoonigan.
And your point is ?
@@Ptrmrkks that its the most highbrow program on hoonigan
@@zthreetwo9874 😂😂 lmao
@@Ptrmrkks He already made his point, when he said it.
Agreed, this is the high IQ section of hoonigan lol
Stop it! They ll go up in value before I can get one :p
Too late on the value going up. One of my friends has a 94 he bought for $4300, and I've seen him turn down $12k+,and even $ on the rims & tires he bought (1800 rims, 1200 tires) and he had beat them up/balded the inside of the rears by drifting every parking lot we would pass.
Btw, I spent 14-15 hours in 2 days to do the "general maintenance" timing belt and water pump, air & fuel filters, and spark plugs.
It's not _difficult_ to work on, just absurdly time consuming. And maybe 10mm socket consuming. If you drop one, not even the magnet on a stick can pick it up. There's just no extra space under the hood.
Beautiful car though, makes my '88 z31 300ZX look like 1960's tech compared.
every price will go up
@Alpha Wërks yep people will buy them for a little while than not have enough money to throw in to them and sell them and eventually everyone will know they can’t afford it and the price will go down again. I bought mine for 6 and it was insanely clean. That was 10 years ago.
the prices are already rising through the roof.

I am sure someone said it already but that is thee cleanest 300z, and it's perfect! Great build 👍.
You really have to appreciate the amount of detail and how everything just goes hand in hand with this car. Superb build
"Where did Nissan go wrong?"
Nissan asking the same question.
~1994,1995. Bankruptcy threat, Ghosn took over, no more cool stuff allowed out. Profits became central focus. Nissan knows, Nissan simply no longer cares.
ALL these damn car makers have lost their souls. Hardly any more manuals or fun cars to drive anymore.
2001 Nissan merge with Renault it just went down hill!
They made the shitty Altima and stopped making quality cars.
@@spoonman73 Women became the main bread winner and started buying "crossovers" so regulations where passed to center attention on making it easier to manufacture crossovers and SUV's as they would not have as high of emissions standards.
Such a clean Z, would love to add a z32 to my garage. Larry lets see a modded Z31!
bruh the car is 32 years old and still looks like it came out 2023
The more “forgotten one” more than the Z is the 3000GT/Stealth
Tru
They’re just as hard to work on, fwd based, and have oil leaking issues. Z32 much better platform
I had a 92 VR-4, extremely difficult to work on, but it was a blast to drive! Now I am learning and wrenching on my 1993 RX-7... extremely easy to work on, once you get rid of the “rats nest” and go single turbo!
You forgot abt the FTO too:)
@@1x5.22 - I remember it had good reviews and following. But it wasn’t offered in USA
Maaaaaaaan... what a build. Beautiful. Larry, your passion for Zs was oozing in this one. I have two Zs myself and really appreciate your love for these cars. Thank you.
This guy has done a really good job, the car is an amazing build. Super clean and nicely modded.
Most underated 90's JDM Legend 3000gt VR-4.
FTO???
Black paint and no scratches? Perfect body kit and wheels MAN THIS CAR, who made this piece of art? Massive respect.
LARRY CHEN LIKES Z's?
One word: tasteful. And incredibly well built. A lot of times these "Rocket Bunny" kits look wild but this one brings the car up to date very well.😎👍
This made my freakin day. The first car I idolized as a kid, done so clean and well
I’ve sat in this car before at a few different car meets and can absolutely confirm it smells like Japan. It’s an unreal experience being in such a clean car from so long ago. Colton is super chill, great guy to meet and talk to about his car.
I’m curious what this japan smell, smells like… Is there a japan air freshener? XD
I love the twin Z design body kits But I really miss the strosek wide body kits they were not bolt on kits like this they had to be fully fiberglasses on they look so dope. But the back bumper with diffuser from twinz designs is fucking amazing it’s super close to stock but goes lower down to the ground. I’m I used to be on z1 motorsports all day long back in the day. I had a 1996 2+0 manual n/a 300zx black with black leather interior it was my baby and unfortunately I came into some bad times and sold it. My dream is to have another one with either a twin turbo or LS swap.
The Z32 body lines are so perfect that most body modifications usually look bad. This is not one of those cases!
very well put
Make the widened fenders moulded rather than riveted/bolted on, THEN it's perfect.
@@totophi good point
Always a favorite. My dad still has his 91 TT.. He 65 now 😉
Thats how im gonna be. Im gonna own mine til death
I'm so happy to see a real wide body that isn't half arsed and forgets about the gas flap...
Rocket bunny im on about you.... fix your sh** missing the gas flap just ruins the flow.
Dad had one of these for years, though his was just an NA version. Definitely a difficult car to wrench on, but such an underrated car imo, because of the weight. Styling still holds up today. Engine sounds great. Would gladly own one.
I've always wanted one of these since the first time I saw one in the 90's. This car is beautiful but never seen one with so much dedicated time and love. This car is just absolutely gorgeous!
The 2 biggest underrated JDM cars are Nissan 300zx and Mitsubishi GTO both cars way ahead of there time’s
So finally a Z32 made it onto Hoonigan Autofocus, maybe we can see you feature a Z31 in the near future? We all know Larry loves Z cars and I know Socal has some sick Z31s that would be worthy of an Autofocus feature. As a lover of Z cars and Autofocus it would be cool to see a Z31 get the Hoonigan spotlight.
I'm not sure what it is as well but I love the z32. Definitely my favorite 90s JDM car and one I will own one day. That z32 is a thing of beauty. I don't see many z32s sadly but I love seeing one in such a beautiful condition. That gauge cluster setup is so elegant. I would love to have that in my future car.
You better buy one soon the price is only going up
I've got to clean myself & swap my undies... the sound on this car is exotic... excellent choice of mods
This thing makes "showroom condition" look like a trashed old beater. Holy cow.
Its great to see people who love the Z32 as much as I do. I've owned my 95 TT since 96. Over the years it has gone through many changes, but all have been performance related. I could never bring myself to do anything to it body wise other then the color change, which was/is part of the full restoration project which began almost three years ago and is finally only a few weeks away from being completed. Although I always took very good care of it, time will always take its toll. A few years ago she began to develop some creaks and squeaks and her handling began to degrade. It didn't take a genius to realize that all the bushing were finally giving out. And as I looked at the car with a critical eye I realized it was either time to sell it or spend some money. Logic told me the smart thing to do was sell it, which I decided to do. But when the time came to sell it I could not go through with it. So, obviously logic had left the building and replaced by a desire to build my vision of the perfect Z32. Yes, Ive spent WAY to much money on it. And unless there is someone else out there as crazy as I am about the Z32 I will never get an 1/8th of what I've spent on it. But even if there was I still wouldn't sell it, even at a profit, because that's how stupid I am..lol. But now I have, literally, my vision of the perfect, completely stock body, 1995 Z32TT. And the best part? It's quite literally brand fucking new.
Wow.... this is THE car. THIS was car that was pasted on my walls as a kid. Not a Ferrari, not a Lambo, not a GTR or a M3; no sir, never those.... Just THIS^^^... An early 90's Nissan 300zx (Z32). What an amazing piece of automotive engineering!? And stunning from every angle! I love it!
I am 45 yrs old. This was my dream car in the early nineties. Really nice car.
@@christopherhylton8569 Yea, I guess I did show my age with this comment, huh? Lol! I too am a 70's baby or what the younglings like to call a "Boomer"

THAT THING IS STRAIGHT SQUEAKIN DAWG
Sick car, humble dude. Thanks for shooting this one Larry. Not enough 300 love these days. I used to love those things.
This is the best Z32 I have ever seen. Tastefully executed & the stance is immaculate. Full credit Colton & great coverage Larry :-)
Proper fitting/width wide body. Still compliments the original body lines very well. Seems hard to do for a lot of other companies out there. Cars done very well. Great job
Looks like it came off the factory floor. Never been a zx fan but this just turned me
I drove a 90 300z once. 1-2 shift spun out bad. They’re very underrated
The difficulty to work on is massively exaggerated by most. it can be overwhelming at first glance, and access to some parts can be difficult in stock configuration but there is a lot you can do to make maintenance far more straight forward. The powertrain and drivertrain are very robust and the common reliablity issues (PTU, MAF, Wiring loom, Vacuum leaks, Det sensor) are easily resolved and typically exist because they have never been replaced on a 30year old car. Unfortunatly the market is flooded with poorly maintained examples.
I've done strosek wide body in black. Some day will look the part like this car. I'm from UK 🇬🇧. All goes well I'll get it on RUclips.
I've just got to say, you've made the Z community proud! Cheers from AZ!! :D .. I had a nice clean '93 2+2 Z32, sold but now I have a '94 2+0 Z32 sitting at a buddy's house I need to pick up..
is that garage unknown from insta
Yes.
that is First wide Body what i like and looks VERY Good on thies car!!!!👍🏼😉👌🏼
TwinZ makes the best kit for this IMO
100% agree
I am in love with that rear end
i’ve loved these cars since i was a teenager, this one is perfect. would love to see it at night in an urban setting.
Hahahaha breakin the law
300zx wya!!!
Super nice car and the owner I though was very humble.
This is a max effort build right here. So many cool details like the capsule shaped exhaust tips to match the taillights. Widebody is perfect, enhances the lines of the car unlike most other kits that ruin it. And that interior is just mint like it came from the showroom floor. Props to the owner, he should be extremely proud of this masterpiece.
The only thing i would want to change would be to drop the rb26dett in it. Little more space under the hood and much greater potential.
Definitely a timeless design in one of my favorite cars of all times
I like Autofocus bc they're not like the others that basically play football with the camera and scream in my face.
Been following Colton on Instagram for a longgg time. he's a huge inspiration for anyone interested in the z32
the cheapest way to build this car is to take out the motor and upgrade everythang. everythang.
Larry Chen is the man! Thanks for the Z32 love, we appreciate it!
Gorgeous
In before that one guy that has to remind us that the headlights were used on diablos.
I think i found him
Noooo dont bring them into focus.....keep them underrated. On my 11th z32 now, 6th slicktop, 2nd 2jz big single slicktop. Love the chassis, prefer inlines to the vg30. Not a hard engine to master, just no room as we all know.
3000gt is the most underrated
Fun fact, The first car I drove/learned manual on was a Nissan 300zx Z32
Im 16 with 1994 300zx currently replacing injectors , glad to see these cars getting some attention but at the same time I want them to remain underrated.
hey im 17 w a 95' 300zx 😅😂

@@Oscarutabaga Thats cool both one year apart 😂!
@Alpha Wërks Thats probably true , they are a pain in the ass sometimes.

Nice z!!!...surprise a z32 has never made it to his channel...Mike Demicco and Jimmy Oaks are my Favorite..wish I could mix the 2 of them..Great Review all in all...🏁👍
Damn, perfection.
Larry with the sticky tires comment, Hoonigan should definitely sponsor this fella in a couple drag runs 🤙
Id like to see this in a this vs that episode
I gotta disagree on this Larry, the most underrated JDM legend is the 3000GT.
I’m convinced from the video at toprank with the GTO that he might not know the 3000GT exists. Speedhunters has never even featured one. There’s some pretty big power VR4s out there but no one really knows
They had their time in the sun in the 90s-00s, along with the Stealth TT. 90s kids know, the Mitsubishi GTO was the best street car in Gran Turismo.
Have to agree
i would swap the VR38 from the R35 ...........
i bought a z32 for 2100 and still havent driven it

300’s are so sexy.
Ahh one of my favorite cars of all time.. I love the Z32.. Timeless good looks.. Gone are the days of Nissan being king. I still want one of these one day!
I dont usually comment but this is super cool.
Absolutely gorgeous. The 350z is a disgrace compared to this.
FINALLLLLLLLYYYY A Z32.........THANK YOU!!!!!!! 🤙🏾 I love/hate mine more than you can know
Absolutely GORGEOUS 🎉
I have never seen such a gorgeous z32!!! This kit is soooo sexy.....also big thumbs up for keeping the vg30 dett!!!
Midnight club anyone
"So ahead of its time." What is so ahead of its time with this car?
It was a heavy underpowered nissan.
The instruments of the vehicle were a head of its time the body of the car was unique and has a very reliable v6 motor definitely ahead of its time
My Dad had a z32 back in the day. These are what stated my love for JDM cars.
Z31 feels more underrated than the Z32 to be honest. It's like the R33 Skyline.
NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO now they just went up $3,000
I’m currently building a restomod original TT z32 and I’ve watched this video 4 times. I keep coming back to it.
The best looking 300zx I've seen in a long time absolutely love these cars
Beautiful Z32
The twin turbo is what made GM raised the Corvette up to 300 hp.
My jaw dropped when you said the VQ sounds bad! Wtf you smoking?!?! Every single time I hear the unmistakable sound of a VQ my head snaps around (even if it’s something like an FX). Now granted, the Z32 sounds great too (especially this one) but to slander the VQ like that is just unforgivable! I’ve had two G37’s (a 2008 and a 2010) and they were my favorite-sounding cars I’ve ever owned.
I love the 300ZX way more the Supra. I was a teen at the time and can never forget the first time I seen a T-Top Z it was at a wedding and EVERYONE looked at it "EVERYONE" it was unlike anything on the road. This was like in 93 or so.
So gorgeous great video work of art
KNIGHT RIDER VIBES
This motor is an absolute beauty.....I'd be scared to drive this.....anywhere.....I'd have to drive it at night in the countryside.....perhaps in North Yorkshire, probably somewhere like Castle Howard. THE most underrated and prettiest Japanese vehicle sat next to the 90's Honda NSX. 👌🏽
Such a gorgeous car, the design is so emblematic of how much effort went into making their car look unique and have a distinct personality. How distinct each car markers flagship cars were from one another
The engine was terrible and cost a fortune to build up so you could run decent amount of boost. The 2jz made more power without mods than these did with $10k spent on them.
Amen to that. This is why this model never made it to the street racing scene in the 90's or early 2000's ... the car was very HEAVY and the engine was a bitch to work on. The 240z, 280z, 200sx and the 240sx were far more popular. I guess people didn't like the V style engine which is why the R35 GTR is not that popular because Nissan decided to go with the V engine rather than keep the inline 6
What if I told you. The stock motor has ran 8.9s in the quarter mile with 780+hp. And was all done under 15k including the purchase of the car
These have so much potential, correct me if I'm wrong but z32 is still the fastest car nissan ever made (ie check out their land speed record)
Ive been following this guy in ig for a while now. Glad to see him here
He is probably cringing on the inside every time someone touches the car..... don’t touch other people’s cars... nicely done 300Z though (under-rated though - the 3KGT VR4, the best looking FD RX-7, the most expensive MkIV Supra TT). The most affordable project car? The 300Z.
such a similar story to the mr2, mad respect super clean build
I love Z's as well, was born in a 280Z, then when I was old enough to drive I bought a 300ZX and then upgraded to Z32 twin turbo 1991 (black on black leather)' such an amazing car it was ahead of its time. unfortunately working on it is not FUN lol the book for this car is so think its crazy. I had to do a motor swap on mine and it took months to get everything corrected and all the vacuum lines correct and what not - finding people who can work on it is also hard.... You basically have to be a Z32 mechanic to enjoy this car, otherwise you'll be fixing it more than driving it.... all that aside it's still amazing and I wish I never sold mine.
The 300z is so underrated! Beautiful build love it
Who needs a C8 when you have something like this? I have a '90 n/a, unmolested, that I bought from an older gentleman 8 years ago. I do al my work...yes, hard to work on-alternator and starters are fun. Motor still runs great at 120k, but I really like the LS swap, and plan on doing it. Now you got me wanting this body kit to complete my dream. Great vid. Subbed. I'd like to see a price breakdown on this car
1995 300ZXTT is one of my dream cars.
