400+ HP Modified 'FD' Mazda RX7 - One Take

- The last-generation Mazda RX7 is arguably one of the prettiest designs to come out of Japan in the 1990's. It's small, light, and has great balance, and its turbocharged rotary engine is one of the most unique, interesting, and possibly misunderstood powerplants out there. This one has been modified with track-ready suspension, good brakes and tires, and most importantly, an engine tuned to over 400 HP.
Japan was doing it right in the 90's
yeah, what happened Toyota, you used to be cool
now they collaborate with subaru
Toyota makes the FRS, is making a new supra, and is going to make a hot hatch yaris to take on Ford. I think they realized their mistakes. NISSAN on the other hand.....
Kanaric nissan is still making the gtr on the other hand mitsubushi lol
The new gtr looks kinda boring compared to the old ones.
This guy is one of the most knowledgeable guests he has ever had
You have to be to drive an RX. The car demands a higher level of attention than any traditional motor.
He really knew His car.
@@pedrorodrigueziii4859 thats rite and you find all the people who know nothing but a LS in it.
Maybe the best shape Japanese car to come out of the 90's? Great rear end, great front end, beautiful side profile... Such a great coupe. Oh and the engine...One day!
It's a timeless design for sure, even the second gen rx7 has aged quite well
not for me, 22b beats them all for me
rx7 is one of the few cars id call beautiful, the flowing curves are just sexy.
Please there rubbish ,rotary engines have three moving parts and they still suck and costs too much for what it's worth Pistons engine all day everyday also I know what I'm talking about I've had mate here in oz that owned rx. -3 , r -100 and other 80's even and Cosmo 20b or whatever it's called it looks ugly as shit ,good luck with those apex seal and rotor housing
Beautiful car but I'd definitely be converting it to rb or 2j
this is probably the best example of a usable, modified FD. this thing is so clean and well put together, congrats to this guy for making such a great car even greater.
The FD is so fucking beautiful. Can't think of a better looking car to come out of the 90's.
I'd say the supras and the R-32-34 is about just as good looking.
I'd have to disagree with you on that one. They're all good looking cars, but the FD just has a beautiful, curvy shape like none of the others. Almost like some of the classics from the 60's.
i love my 300zx's tho
Prefer the s2000 looks both exteriour and interiour, but each to their own
+Phillip Gagliardi Nissan Skyline
that is the cleanest rx7 build i have ever seen 10/10
Watch colts ls1 rx7 swap
Divine MT 🤢 🤮
Timeless car. It will go down in history.
FD RX7, R34 Skyline, MK IV Supra, NSX, Z32 300ZX. 90's JDM cars are timeless as can be. Gotta appreciate that point in time.
Don't even mention the 3000GT? That's sacrilege...
Nah sorry. I own a 350z and I dont even think it has a timeless look.
Wu Watt The Vr4 3000gt is better than the supra in almost everyway though, 350z is way too new...
TJ Smijons No it isn't... If it was, we sure as hell would be seeing them a lot more than Supra's. Not to mention the fucking bullet proof 2JZ GTE.
3000GT is aight. They look a little dated interior wise and somewhat exterior, but I wouldn't consider it timeless.
I think this is the fastest I've seen Matt drive on One Take ever
I was thinking exactly the same thing. Let's all send prayers to the powers that be for Matt not to get any tickets while driving in the canyons. As far as I'm concerned it's the most effective and acceptable form of prayer. Cheers!
that's because he's smart. rx7's are rare and he only has a limited amount of time.
+samsonian If this show took place here in Finland he would have lost his license long ago. Police would use these videos as an evidence against him in court.
No way, the SC huracan video with the infamous log drag was pretty quick.
What about the 675LT? that was just rediculous!
God that sound. Eargasm.
Ricer
So slow you even post comments after me! :D
Rotors sound great.
I’m coming 💦
Matt we need a compilation of people feeling uncomfortable in the passenger seats of their cars :D the expressions would be hilarious
this. please . please matt please
The FD RX7 is the most beautiful Japanese car ever made and the symphony it produces with this setup is other-worldly
Yes! 😍❤️
seriously the prettiest car you've ever done a OneTake on! ❤❤
Then you should see my black 94 FD, way better than this one but this one is clean because he kept it mostly like a stock 99 body wise which are clean. A well kept RX 7 is always a pretty sight.
Twenty years later and this car's styling is still very fresh; beautiful proportions and looks good from any angle.
Classic.
If Mazda were to reissue this car with zero changes to the body and a turbo i4 around 300hp they would sell tons.
2024, still holds.
Classic 90s sports car. One of the few JDM cars I really like. Nice that the owner has not gone the full Fast Furious route and kept it clean. Really nice car.
I'd kill for that RX7.
I'll give you a picture of someone and address 🤔
@@spankthemonkey3437 lmao
This guys one of my favorite guys that's done a One Take with Matt, he seems like a really cool dude.
What a well-sorted FD. Love it.
Wow, what a beautiful ride. That thing is so clean. Even 20 years later, that body style doesn't look dated. Just smooth clean lines from every angle.
I totally respect your road manners. You consistently hold back from slower moving cars in front of you on these canyon roads. 👍🏼
That U-turn looked a little scary. ;-)
The u turn in front of that car that came up on them quickly? Yeah. All his 3 point turns and u turns are going to catch up with him one day when someone else is hustling through the canyons like he is.
Indeed. He also better be careful that he doesn't pick off one of those bicyclists. They annoy the shit out of me, especially on fast twisties like we see here, but still, they have the right to be there. Personally, I think those cyclists are crazy to drive on narrow fast roads with blind spots galore. They must have a death wish.
All of that said, this was a great video! That FD is absolutely beautiful!
Saw that too...he knew he fucked up, kept looking back in his side mirror. Kept thinking, "that could have gone really bad, really quick".
I just got a solid 4 inches from the review I'm never 4.
#cotd
hahhaha
watch the other reviews , you will grow more than 4 inches in no time
This car will never get old....
Hes definetly nervous in the passenger seat and i dont blame him. This is one beautiful rx7. Props to the owner for such a clean build.
This is a very good example of what an FD should look like and perform! I have always loved these cars and seeing these just puts a smile on my face!
much better than a shitty LS swap. thank you!
It's just idiots that make these engines less reliable, just maintain it properly and replace seals before they blow and it will run just fine.
+CrAzYNooBB55 i don't think anyone buys this car for gas mileage lmao.
@voice of reason completely agree. Was thinking the same
But that is the problem I don't want to do a rebuild every 30,000 miles I shouldn't have to to achieve 400 horsepower
Oil Metering Pump I know how to turn a wrench lmao thats funny. I'm building my own car currently a 1972 Dart swinger for a pro touring vibe that will look near stock the engine is going to be a built 360 smallblock with a 4 speed manual transmission an 8 3/4 inch rear end with 3.55 rear gears and all new suspension from Firm Feel. I will make well over 400 horsepower turn 6700 RPM in a 3000 pound car and not have to rebuild the engine every 30-50 thousand miles. (Don't even get me started on the torque figure ill make well over 300 pound feet more)
Mazda does great things with almost all the cars they make, almost all of them seem like fun drivers cars. way to go Mazda
Ahh, the legendary RX-7. A beautiful car with handling to match. Another relaxing and inspiring video.
The fly by shots were beautiful, sex to my ears. Also the owner is very knowledgable with his car and isn't afraid to talk, great guy! Great video!
Stop and think for a second, the car in this video is 23 years old. Now Google a picture of a '93 Ford Taurus.
Also this guy is a class act.
Much rather have a 93 Trans Am with an LT-1 V8 with nearly similar hp stock and room to go well over 1000hp if desired. Now that's a timeless car, not a friggin Mazda
Steve Anthony Mazda can make 1000 hp too
Trans Am? Timeless? 😂 Wot?
Pontiacs, timeless? Lol more like time-lost becuase they're lost in time
@@blackisback74 top tier boomer comment
Not ruined. Perfect. Respects to owner.
One of my favorite episodes. Can't get enough FD RX7 in my life. Cool owner and Matt really looks like he enjoys driving it.
What a beautiful build. Very clean and well done RX-7. One of the greats from the best era. As someone pointed out below somewhere, if Mazda were to re-release this RX-7, just as they used to build them, they would sell stupidly well. Same goes for the Supra, 3000GT VR4, even the older EG Type R civics or older NSX.
The sales would be through the roof. In their own category of automobiles. The people with no interest in cars can still get their modern rubbish with gizmos, but for enthusiasts we could still purchase from an 'Enthusiast list' at a dealer of brand new older vehicles. Charge whatever you need to get it done, but get it done.
Well said statement, the 90s had the best Japanese cars in my opinion.
They don't make em like they used to!
Cars of the future will run on e-juice!!!
+Z Vaper They sure dont make them like they used to! Nowadays car manufacturers are all about silly things like making engines smaller and more powerful, and using all these fancy smancy cutting edge technologies like variable valve timing and those ridiculous direct injection engines and CVT transmissions, or god forbid the abhorrent hybrid technologies being developed by losers like tesla, I mean who needs electronic awd or over 700 lb-ft of torque when you got the simple joys of having a 1.3l engine that drinks more gas than you're grandpa's big block and dont forget the wonders of pop up headlights! If you're lucky you may even get one with a cassette player! just make sure its not one of those new self-rewinding ones (real men rewind their cassettes manually.) Your FD may even start up some of the time! (as long as you didnt turn it off too quickly the last time you drove it last) ahhh the glory days.....
@@wyattllc the sarcasm is real bitch! Fuck a hybrid lol
In the 90's Honda, Mazda, Toyota, Mitsubishi, Nissan all put out amazing cars. Just enough technology, modern looks, reliability, and easily modifiable.
Very tasteful True Japaneses tuning on this RX-7.
best car i have seen on this show
One of the best looking cars ever!!! I still remember the first time I saw one.
I usually don't get jealous of these rides but... man..
FD RX-7's are absolutely beautiful. Mazda should create a new RX-7 I bet it would sell really well.
Such a timeless car.
let's click on the every ad here so we get more RX7s!
This is easily one of the nicest cars you've driven. It's great to see an owner take such good care of it. All mods are tastefully done and very purposeful.
love the fact that you are driving this car most car reviews ignore this great car
Gotta love those rotary engines... very nice RX7!
oh how i love the Enkei RPF1's, that rx7 is so clean.
That car still looks good after 15 years. An awesome example of well tuned 7.
I really love how the owner REALLY knows his stuff and actually has some good judgement on upgrades.
Reviewing an FD3S for my channel very soon. Been a waiting a LONG time to find a nice functional one (no LS swap) with a willing owner. Watching this video just makes me more excited!
Haha I'm actually a subscriber of your channel
JDMxlove I recognize the name! Thanks for the sub
I *LOVE* the NSX. But my '97 WS6 is what I could afford, and I love it too!
Bucket list, removal of all LS ‘s!
That guy looked nervous as shit the whole time.
....I thought the same thing! "You can take it to 8K".....but not 100 rpm over that!!
He kept looking over to check what rpm matt was shifting at
It's tough to let someone drive a car that you put so much time and money into. Matt doesn't baby it at all and the sensation from the passenger seat is just...foreign.
Not true. They like high RPMS, like really. You need to redline it at least once per month in order to get all the dirt out of the system.
Mr. K, wasn't that even recommended by Mazda back in the day - like at least once a week?
One of the coolest owners on this channel. It shows in his car too, he obviously is very passionate and intelligent about his Rx-7.
Always good to see someone who really knows what they're doing. This guy knows every inch of his car.
Now THIS is a tuner car that we can all be proud exists.
Probably the best sounding rotary I've heard. They usually sound like a hive of angry bees.
those are the na's, all turbo 13b's sound pretty much the same
Yeah, my rx8 sounds like angry bees :/ but I love the sound
The 4 rotors are the best sounding imo.
My rx8 sounds like Angry bees while on the throttle. Sounds like a plane coming in for a landing when you let off the throttle.
It's the first time I saw that much love for a car in the comments sections. Means a lot.
That sounds that this RX7 gives off 👌 Proves you don’t need to have 1200hp to have fun
Absolute Dream Car
this RX7 is just perfect in my eyes... (and ears)
This is the best looking RX7 I have ever seen. Hard to tell what’s aftermarket and what isn’t - and I mean that as a compliment.
IMO this is the best looking Japanese car of all time and in the top 10 best looking cars ever.
If this car was new today it would still turn heads.
The owner needs a medal for his restraint and taste on this - when you start with something so good, it’s hard not to make it worse with changes, but this is perfect. Great colour, great wheels (not black thank god) smoked glass on the lights, if it’s lowered, it isn’t slammed.
It’s a beautiful Q car, faster than it looks and doesn’t shout too loudly. Less is more - turning something great into something truly amazing. Love it.
That interior is much nicer than I would expect from an older mazda.
Let's see how many are RX7CLUB members here?
I'm one.
I'm here.
yup!
I'm an original owner of the FD in my avatar. Does that count? heh
Hello
That is one pretty RX7
Those Borg Warner EFR setups are so good, dude basically has my dream setup with his car being fast but not going completely mental with it.
One of the best looking japanese sports car ever made. I remember seeing a silver one back in 95 with a big Blitz sticker on the side. Looked amazing!!!!
weight on these are 50/50 if im not mistaken
correct.
Mid engined too, since the engine is small and behind the front subframe :)
So it's basically a Ferrari F12/Honda S2000. LOL
+Dan Bonnett I'd much rather take your 335 anyday...my realistic dream car right there :)
trevor philips minneapolis.craigslist.org/ram/cto/5709066014.html
Omg the RX7 is a wet dream
Loved this vid. Two genuine car guys driving and talking about cars.
That owner is super cool, the vibe wasn't awkward at all. Very nice.
"A tick over 420" LOL
dude sounds exactly like firas zahabi lol
GSP is not impressed.
They share the same Adams Apple Seeds.
Who is GSP, what does GSP stand for ?
GSP= George St Pierre. Former UFC welterweight champ. Firas Zahabi is his coach.
"hey guys its joe, here to bring you my pre race analysis"
Even from here i feel super envolved in this drive the balance is the best i've seen on 1 take, this is just best chassis you can get Mazda was out of this world with this car, this is most impressive, very nice build homie...👊
I like how knowledgeable this Rx-7 owner is....knows his shit...wish more ride-along owners were like this bro
"the revs never end," is something I don't want to hear from someone driving my car lol
Rotarys are meant to rev high. They run worse if you shift low.
thats a dream car right there. gorgeous car !
Really enjoyed the owner's commentary. Obviously had a lot knowledge. loved this vid.
Not just the 90s, one of the best looking Japanese cars ever. I’m not a jdm guy by any means really but I LOVE the looks of this thing. This, R34 and NSX all look amazing
now this is a one take...
Immense love of the RX7 and of course the rotary. Did a video on a modified 13b black rx7 convertible a few weeks ago and fell in love with it!! Have a look at the video and let me know what you think. Personally, I think it sounds better than this FD (sorry) :P
One of the only satisfied owners on one take
Love this one take. Owner is super chill, knows his stuff, and has modified the car right. I want one just like that. Keep at it!
Beautiful car
lets get a turbo s2000 review
Or SC
+Ray DM no ty on the sc. Turbo s2k ftw
+Ray DM I would like to see that also
+Eüro Nasty I drove my first turbo s yesterday wasn't to bad of an experience
Eüro Nasty For canyon roads like those I think a sc is more suitable. A turbo S is cool, but they can be a bit laggy. I wouldn't mind either tho
This is one of those timeless cars that still looks modern today... I would say at least 12 years old. The paint looks hella fresh.
So nice to hear that RX7 owner actually know his stuff.
Quality build
'A tick over 420' blaze
I think out of all the cars you tested within the past year or two this is one of the only cars you have made me actually want to own x). Especially since motors like these aren't really manufactured. I think it looks like a solid and well put together car.
That was a CLEAN car, I hardly ever watch all the way through these one takes.
But this one I did. Beautiful car!
Get Daniel Espinoza's evo on here
Can't come to LA but if you're ever in Virginia.... my FC is waiting for you...
Where in Virginia are you. Me and my brother have turbo II and we are in Haymarket
Gregory Mansour private message for that kind of info...
For years I've heard people talking about how good rotaries sound, but couldn't quite agree with them.
This, though. This sounds amazing.
Thanks Matt
*Still praying they make the RX-Vision*
This video explains perfectly why I love my 95 FD that I've owned since new. Thanks Matt!
Keisuke Takahashi!!!!!!!
Mr. Farah....that car is the reason why swapping a LS engine into an FD is a travesty. :)
I really like the owner and the car. Perfectly balanced build. Thats a great example of what these cars were meant to be. You are really making me want another FD.
how could you dislike this video. cool owner. cool scenery. perfect car.
Yesss, my first choice on world cars Gran turismo Ps1 :')
jheez what a car😍
Epic car. My buddy had one in college and it changed my life
This was a really good one take, the dude has a good voice and knows his car, and its a sick car.
Is this an old One Take since you mentioned your Skyline?
One Takes are filmed months in advance before they're posted
+Alan C I knew some were but I swear some have quite a fast turnover like the Exocet film
+Henry Kincaid this was shot the same day as the Exocet - may 2nd.
