    I had a 1987 RX7 back around 1991 - when I was 20. It was a great car. But you had to understand that it burned through a qt of oil every 3k miles or so, so regular maintenance is key.

During the sitting period had my brothers infinity i30 and gf Saturn ion to borrow when needed. I’d love to own a rx7, but I’m afraid of it because I’m not that into mechanics. I can do basics thing but that’s all … like a oil change, sensor change and MAYBE brakes changes. And in France those cars are also expensive so it’s bit hard for me to pay 10k for a weekend car atm. Maybe later, I hope at least.

    Bought an 87 fc when I was 17 as my first car. That car tought me EVERYTHING I know about cars up until I went to trade school a few years later and ended up being top of my class. Don't really regret the purchase but MY GOD I could have bought TWO FD's if I just saved my money and waited but instead I spent the next 6 years in a 'trial-by-fire' scenario because it was my only mode of transport. Ended up working out as I learned more than I ever could have with any other car imo but still ended up costing me ~60k in those 6 years. If your in high school and want an rx7 as your first car your probably going to be in the same boat.
    Advice I can give is this:
    DONT buy cheap, DO plenty of reserch before hand and ALWAYS get a compression test before buying. If the sales person/owner says no, walk away lol. Also make sure you have some sort of monitary backing like a stable job or (like me) really caring parents that pick you up if you fall.

    About the problems with age. We are driving a 30 years old Mercedes 190e and it's our car for everyday use because we dont have many problems with age with this car. When it was maybe 25 we had many issues with it because parts got old and had to be replaced but since then we dont have problems with them anymore. So I think if you check if the previous owner took good care of the car and if it doesnt have problems with rust, you can buy a 80s car as your first car. But maybe this isn't recognizable every time and you can't check every single part of the car before you buy it so I guess your right at many situations.

    Got sucked into rotaries
    Bought first fc i could get with 1500(yea it was bad and it was a t2 with extra problems)
    Learned a lot and sold it
    Bought miata, sold miata
    Bought abandoned fd for cheap(I had to once in a lifetime opportunity here)
    Bought a beater for $400
    Beater died and bought friends rx8 that needed new engine.
    Currently daily rx8 with average 7.8 compression.
    Like the in the vid, i was not out of a means of transportation. And that is really the key. Even right now with the daily rx8 i do have a way to borrow a car or a carpool to work if something happens. Overall, not a good first car, but i get it.

    My first car was a 1988 Mazda RX-7 SE. It was red, NA, and automatic. It had about 120,000 miles, when I bought it. I was 18 years old, broke, and went to automotive trade school. I had no business buying that as my first car. I was heavily influenced by an older cousin that built rotaries in his garage. My RX-7's motor didn't last long. It broke down on me a few months after I bought it. Luckily, I found a cheap 1993 Toyota Tercel DX for $100 that had a manual. In hindsight, I wish I would've drove something more reliable, like a Toyota Corolla or a Toyota Celica. I also wish I would've kept that RX-7 and did a piston engine motor swap to keep the car on the road until I was capable enough to put a rotary back in it.

    The best first car is a small compact car with a manual transmission. Something with a decent amount of stick to the road, but that doesn’t have a lot of power, so you can really learn to appreciate cornering and slapping gears, and to show that good driving comes from the driver not the car.

    If you don't own a tool set and don't plan to buy a tool set and are not willing to buy additional tools then you got no business owning any car older than 10yrs meaning no car older than 2013 lol. I'm 40yrs old and I've own a Gsl-se, a 2nd GTU, a 2nd gen turbo 2 swapped, about 6 Ae86's in total and still on my 1st Gslse and my 1st Ae86 Gts hatch, I come from a family of mechanics, my dad is a mechanic and owned a GSL my whole childhood, both my uncles owned rotaries, on had a Repu and a rx3 wagon, the other had a rx3 t2 swapped and a r100, so I had the luxury of being around rotaries and older car all my life and had any tool I can possibly need at my disposal, but even with all those advantages Rotaries are full time job to keep them running right and healthy, countless of hours spent reading forum posts and visiting Mazdatrix here in Southern California and other rotary shop that are now closed for good, definitely not for the weak and in current time not for the poor either, it used to be a cheap platform, not no more lol

    As a previous owner of a 1985 RX-7 GS I would not myself recommend this as a very first car.They are fantastic cars, don't get me wrong but the maintenance required on a pretty frequent basis is too much for some people to handle. Young guys and girls have too much on their minds already to keep the oil level topped up as often as you have to with these cars.Tune ups to keep them running smoothly, Not to mention the mileage even with a 12a engine is not even close to good compared to most modern cars. I remember my cars gas mileage equivalent to a 5.0 mustang or Camaro of the time. You just have to be very diligent with these cars, especially with oil level. You can't ignore it or forget about it at all.Cooling system also.

      Do it! I've been dailying an RX8, just make sure you understand the compression test process on a rotary and MAKE SURE THE COMPRESSION RESULTS ARE GOOD. No exceptions. Not even recent rebuild paperwork. Keep up on general maintenance, replace the coils with the BHR kit, get rid of the cat, premix and redline often and you'll be in good shape!

    Let’s make it more simple… should a MAZDA be your first car?
    Easy yes.

    • @devilsoffspring5519
      @devilsoffspring5519 Год назад

      Not really, today's Mazda vehicle are considered excellent but the RX-7 is pretty universally a maintenance nightmare.
      So no, I do NOT recommend one as a first car these days. They're much too old and need far too much maintenance for them to be a good first and only car.
      Get a half-decent Corolla for that.

    The history of the rotary engine is an immense tragedy. I love rotary engines, but…

    • @devilsoffspring5519
      @devilsoffspring5519 Год назад

      Not really, it's just that every car company out there has built them and all of them reached the same conclusion: That Wankel rotary engines will always burn more fuel per HP than a piston engine will because of the chamber shape. So, they stopped developing rotaries and started building better piston engines.

    What a joke! If you have a Rx7 for your 1st car, you didn't buy it, your parents did! I love how those that have money act like this, just shows how stupid they are! Simply put if you're not born into money, you have to work your whole life away trying! Great cars should go to Great Drivers, not those who have it Given to them just to destroy!
