Late to the game here but I picked up the Bourbon for $39 here in Indianapolis. Just a couple pours in, but loving it. It is just straightforward for me: vanilla, caramel, & oak on nose & palate. My wife said they should make a cologne that smells like this!

I just bought the Rye today on a recommendation, and just wrote up my tasting notes. I didn't find everything that you found in it, but surprisingly (for me), I did find some of the same notes in the nose, taste, and finish as you did. Thanks for a great review. Oh, and I found it for $40, so if you think it is a good deal at $55, then I did well.

    Hey Jason:
Not a North American Rye, but I bought a bottle of KILBEGGAN Small Batch Rye recently. Here are my impressions:
    SLÁINTE
    Mike
KILBEGGAN Small Batch Rye Irish Whiskey
    8/8/20
47% ABV Mashbill 30% Rye, the rest split between Malted and Un-malted Barley. The first whiskey produced wholly on-site at the Kilbeggan Distillery in many years. (Whiskey Wash)
This is my second setting with this whiskey so air has mixed with the spirit.
COLOR: Pale Yellow Nice ring with many legs running swiftly
NOSE: Strong Malt sweet note followed by a Spice note; then light black pepper. Slight Dill note as well.
PALATE: Sweet Dill arrival, with a creamy mouth feel, some alcohol burn on my tongue which fades as I swirl it. A black pepper note appears; then a dryness with a light dill note returning.
FINISH: Light pepper in my throat and on my tongue with a light dryness and then a mouthwatering sense. A very light Dill note remains in my mouth.
With 1 drop of spring water
NOSE: Light malt sweetness with a fresh note underpinning
PALATE: A Minty sweet arrival with a very light pepper. There is still an alcohol burn but lighter. A Light Dill arises as I swirl it around. There is also a light pepperiness. The mouthfeel is lighter.
FINISH: Drying to a cottonmouth with light pepper.
With 2 drops of spring water
    NOSE: Very Light Malt Sweetness
PALATE: Light pepper with a bit of a chalk mouthfeel. Pepper rises from the dryness as I let it sit. There is also a hint of Dill.
FINISH: Cottonmouth dryness with a light black pepper spice on my tongue; transitioning to a mouthwatering sense.
I have really enjoyed the whiskey. It is a testament to allowing air to mix in the bottle for a number of days. I got many more notes in this sitting than when I first opened the bottle.
The mouthfeel was very creamy neat and I loved how I was able to identify the black pepper note; yet there is also the spiciness I know from un-malted barley in single potstill.. Dill and Mint are here which will be recognizable to American Rye Whiskey drinkers but the Malted Barley adds a balance of Sweetness and the Un-malted barley in the mash bill contributed to the spiciness.
In my reading, Irish distillers in the past used rye and oats and other grains to avoid the English tax on malted barley. This whiskey is distilled in the manner of Irish Single Pot Still using Malted and un-malted barley for 70% of the mash bill with 30% Rye. (Whiskey Wash) The current technical specs do not allow Kilbeggan to use the term Irish Single Pot Still, but whatever you call it CALL IT GOOD!!

Glad you reviewed this. Funny timing too. A buddy of mine gave me a sample of the rye...this was what i texted him for notes....
The nose is pleasant, definitely rye forward off the bat. Little rubbery, little citrus.
The flavor is very nice. Honey, orange and peppery spice.
Finish is solid for a low proof whiskey. It lasts...no heat, but a peppery tingle.

Great review. I have their regular and cask strength of both and they are incredible. I didn't know that they had been purchased by Moët Hennessy...this explains a few things though. I visited the distillery last year and asked some simple questions of one of the distillers and got a very canned response that made me wonder why they were being so evasive. Every craft distillery I've visited loves nothing more than to answer questions and talk about how they make their whiskey, but I guess these folks are in the big leagues now. Hmm, maybe they'll get a Wee Beastie Monster Truck of their own? :)

I have been saying this for years that Woodinville can compare against the best that Kentucky has to offer.
I personally have over 20 bottles of varying proofs and finishes from Woodinville. Four times a year they have special events were you can go and taste directly from 3 different barrels and bottle your own whiskey.
I just put up a video regarding their 10 year anniversary and I was blessed to be able to review their new triple barreled, Ardbeg finished American whiskey. They also released a new bottled in bond bourbon.
I need to get Chris over at Bourbinsane a few samples of their high proof bourbon and rye. Let me know if you want to try a couple as well.

This is NOT accurate. Listen to some of the others that review this bourbon. I just bought a bottle of this WOODINVILLE Straight Bourbon 90 proof 2 days ago. Whom ever voted this "Bourbon of the Year" could not have had the same bourbon I have. Mine is overwhelming with oak tannin's and old leather saddle on the palate, a simple profile that is just weird. ALL Bourbons have hints of caramel, vanilla, fruits, brown sugar...etc. I also bought a bottle of RUSSELL'S Reserve 10 Year Old and it is xlnt! Passed on a bottle of WELLERS Special Reserve for the WOODINVILLE. Bad choice. A friend that knows whiskey tried it and he couldn't finish it. He said YUK! Said "I'll stick to my WOODFORDS or KNOB 9yr". Me too.
