Thanks for the great list and information. I've been venturing out into rye territory over the past year and really enjoy the ones I've had. I love the Pikesville and also the Russell's, both of which I have in my bar. There is one from Blaum Brothers (Galina, IL) which is by far my favorite so far. I will be looking to try the rest on your list as well. Thanks!

    Great video!
I've narrowed down my favorite ryes to the top 17 at this point. Out of about 55 I have so far? Can't stop collecting them now, hooked. Moved to Louisville in 85 but just started appreciating ryes this year.
Pikesville and that RR single are definitely included. Pikesville probably gets best quality value of all, at $50. Willett next at $65.
Also, Catoctin Barrel select(big favorite), New Riff single barrel, Stellum select barrel, Stellum black, PEERLESS barrel select, Sagamore cask strength, Redemption 10 yr barrel proof, Coalition barrel proof, Rossville Union barrel proof, Angels Envy rum finish, Whistle Pig 10yr, Barrel Seagrass, Crown Royal 16yr, Masterson 10yr.
Michters is great but I haven't found a high proof one yet, likely it would make the list. Also, haven't spent over $130 on anything, so I'm still limited.
To pick top 9 I'd go Catocin Creek barrel strength (white label), Peerless, Pikesville, Willett, Stellum (either one of mine), Angel's Envy, New Riff single barrel, Sagamore Spirits cask strength, and Rossville Union barrel proof.

    Damn Jason..
So, happy to see this video.
I went into the back room of my market here in Cambodia and found they had their premium whiskies in there..
I wanted a decent rye and found the Rittenhouse bottled in bond..
nestled between rows of Elijah Craig 12 year from before the label change.
I snagged the rye for $30us no tax and grabbed 2 70cl. Elijah Craig 12 year for $40.50us no tax..
I had wondered in April why out in the front with all the usual brands they had Elijah Craig small batch for $40.50us....and a liter of wild turkey for $24us..
I have been sipping on the small batch wishing I could of tried the 12 year.
Well, today I did a side by side and the 12 was so much better in every way ...and the same price...they had the 12 year locked up in a glass case I opened myself..
I am going back tomorrow for more.
I also spotted an Eagle Rare which I have not tried.
So, after shopping in this huge grocery store for over 18 months I finally wandered into the back room and discovered it was a gold mine.
    Cheers.
I was bragging to my wife that you picked Rittenhouse as your #2 rye and it was about $25us..
She is a Buddhist and could care less..
As always, I trust your judgement and opinions.
I am hoping to find some more gems in there.
    Take care,
    Jeff from Cambodia via Kansas.

Great description of flavor profiles. A few I would've liked to see: Pendleton's 1910, is a crazy underrated , easy to drink Rye. Basically, a glass of caramel spiced-vanilla. 12 year aged, only $35 or so. Whistle Pig 12 year, for the higher-end category, and Basil Hayden's Dark Rye are all phenomenal. Willet is good too but comes across with a very strong, unbalanced alcohol flavor, in my opinion.

I just bought Redemption rye as my introduction to the category. I understand that this is MGP's house brand. This is interesting neat and it also makes a nice Rye & Ginger Ale. Taste and aroma is so different than bourbon. Total Wine and More had it for about $26. I will likely try the Old Forester or High West next based on your video and the price points.
I don't have much in my liquor cabinet right now. Tanqueray, Redemption Rye, Knob Hill 9 Small Batch bourbon, Glenmorangie Lasanta, and Ardbeg An Oa is it. Costco has the KH9 1.75 for about $42 and a bottle pair of Glenmorangie Lasanta and Argdeb An Oa for $80.

I've had and have all of those ryes. That black walnut old fashion sounds intense. You don't sat what brand of bitters you use but the Fee Bros Black Walnut bitters are the most bitter bitters I have. I frequently put ONE drop of them along with 3 dashes of Angostura in my bourbon old fashions. Two is too bitter. But I'm willing to give FIVE with Pikesville a try.

4-1-2 for me, as someone who drinks a fair amount of rye. The 1 is Knob Creek. Interesting that he mentioned it as a good entry level rye. I was a fairly experienced rye drinker when I finally got around to trying it. I'd describe it as certainly drinkable, but unremarkable. It's 1 of 2 on his list that I intentionally don't keep around.
The 2 "ties" include the other I intentionally don't keep around. I like the High West, but I've got others I like better around it's price point. The other "tie" is the 1 I've never tried, the Russell's Reserve. Love the bourbon. The WT 101 rye isn't my favorite, but I like it enough to keep it around. The Rare Breed rye is like High West for me. Tasty, but not enough for me to try and keep it around. I WILL be looking for a chance to try the Russell's Reserve now.
Really like the other 4. Old Forester and Rittenhouse are exceptionally good values. They,'re so good that they're probably a big part of the reason I'm pickier about brands that cost $20+ more than those.

  • @spencer-mav

This is perfect timing - I've been digging into rye a lot lately. Turns out I've had most of your list already though - will have to try OF soon and keep my eye out for the Russel's Single Barrel. Pikesville, Michter's, and Rittenhouse are my current top 3 and probably gonna be hard to beat out. Side note, I have a 10 year old, partially aged in Texas, Canadian Rye Whiskey from Treaty Oak that is so floral and perfume it's crazy unique.

I bought a bottle of Whistlepig Piggyback from Costco. It's Whistlepig's most affordable option at about $40-50. It's 100% rye and it's actually my first ever rye, so I was expecting something a lot different from bourbon. Nope, tastes a lot like bourbon to me. Did Heaven Hill pay you? Lol. I also am a fan of those two ryes. Seriously, the production value of all your videos is second to none. Did the turkey 101 not make the list due to availability or taste? And finally, being Canadian, I think I'd throw in lot 40 rye into the mix. Surprisingly affordable at LCBO and delicious. Cheers Jason. Thanks for all the time and passion you put into your videos.

Thanks Mark. No I just happen to love those 2 ryes from HH. Wild Turkey 101 rye isn't as available from what I've seen but I would still take the RR over it anyway. I do love lot 40 but I can't get it where I am anymore. I will be doing a Canadian rye video at some point. Cheers and thanks for.the kind words!

Nice choices, new drinks to try, thanks. Where in the ranks would you put that Bulleit Rye in background? Just tried it, find I like it in an Old Fashioned Sweet.

Great list! Old Forester really knocked it out of the park with that high-malt rye mashbill.
Is the Russell's Reserve single barrel that much better than the standard 6-year? It's almost double the price near me.

Yeah for me the SB is just a bit more flavorful. There's a powerful apple cinnamon note I get that I love. 60 bucks is a tough price for some but i do love it. Bit the OF or Rittenhouse are amazing values.

Pikesville definitely number 1 but I am sad not to see Sagamore in your top 7 definitely one of my go to. You have to try a black-eyed rye so good in the summer.

If sagamore was available everywhere. It would have made it. I love sagamore.

A rusty nail with a really spicy rye to replace the scotch is Christmas in a glass, one of those drinks you can way too easily drink way too many of.

Old forester rye is one of my favorites. I like the affordable and available criteria. That being said, WT 101 RYE surprised me and sadly left off your list. Hey, also appreciate the cocktail suggestions even though I drink whiskey neat 95% of the time. Enjoyed the video.

Thanks Jim. WT 101 would have made it but I love the Russells Reserve way too much. Especially after it opens up a bit. Cheers.

Appreciate you're info! Only a week into Rye but really enjoyed the Rittenhouse and have tried the Michter's which was very tasty. Wild Turkey 101 was good. Think I like the "barely rye" versions but haven't given up on the High West Double Rye. Drink bourbon neat so may there must just be an adjustment needed.
Is Pikesville even available in Ohio??? Is this a Blanton's availability curse for rye?

I bought a bottle of Van Winkle 13 year old for $78 in Sweden back in 2010 (?). I see it now is worth $1900. I wonder how much the little sip at the bottom, which is left, is worth...

That last cocktail with Pikesville, the Black Walnut Old Fashioned, sounds really enticing. Is raw unrefined (Turbinado) sugar the same as or close to the Demerara sugar called for here? If so, I'll drop the $14.50 for the walnut bitters. Normally I don't mess with cocktails, but I loves me some sweet walnut. Good chapter. Good info.

      @TheMashandDrum  4 года назад

Thanks. Yeah you can use the demerara sugar too. That black walnut old fashioned is legit. Definitely make one.

Found the answer. They're nearly the same and Turbinado is the preferred substitute. www.leaf.tv/articles/what-is-the-difference-between-caster-and-icing-sugar/ and www.thespruceeats.com/demerara-sugar-substitutes-4155673

Rye is one of the categories of whiskey that I have not spent enough time on. Your line up is not only great but I like that you also offer cocktail suggestions. But I have one question, "Why do they so many producers use green labels for their rye? If it were an Irish whiskey it would make sense, but why rye?"

    • @TheMashandDrum
      @TheMashandDrum  4 года назад

Apparently it had something to right after Prohibition alot of distillers had green labels lying around so they used it for their rye Whiskies. Some have followed suit and some have done their own thing. Thanks for watching. Glad you liked this one.

Excellent cocktail choice for Rittenhouse which is my "house" rye as well. Extra props for the Vieux Carre call-out, one of my favorites. Try the Cocktail a la Louisiane if you're a fan of New Orleans-style cocktails and absinthe!

You didn't include any Canadian rye whiskys. Some of them are very well reviewed. Alberta Premium 100% rye was called one of the great whiskys of the world by Jim Murray, and Crown Royal 100% Rye won his whisky of the year a few years back. Danfield's 21 year old is very well reviewed as well.
