Wild Turkey rye is tasty and affordable. Pikesville seemed to disappear from stores but I see it slowly making a come back to some online stores. Still have not seen it locally.
Received a bottle of Tin Cup Rye for my birthday and that got me started looking into rye whiskey. I really like the light citrus and mint notes. Just getting started on this journey but currently working thru bottles Bulleit and George Dickle ryes. Prefer the Dickle to Bulleit but Tin Cup is the best of the three. All sourced from MGP. Old Forester is next up.
Nice lineup! I enjoy the Elijah Craig Rye 29.00/ Russell’s 6yr 30.00/ then for a little more the Rare Breed Rye 48.00/ and Sagamore double oak 56.00/ Rum finish 65.00/ PX Sherry finish 68.00 are my go to pours. Cheers!
I was hoping to see the Redwood Empire Emerald Giant get some love. But I really like this list! I’ve only had the 114 from the Old Overholt lineup. I’ll have to grab a BiB. Great video!
I agree that Redwood Empire Emeral Giant is amazing! I enjoy all three of the products that distillery has to offer! The Lostmonarch which is a bourbon rye blended whisky is amazing! And the pipe dream is so tasty for the price! I get great cinnamon notes from the pipe dream!
I'd be happy with a budget BIB episode. BTW, here in PA, where the spirit sales are state controlled, the are only 7 bottles of Pikesville Rye available in the stores covering the whole state and they are selling for $62.39. Good thing Trenton bought the case!
Numbers must be off on your FW&GS. There are 9 bottles in my local store. Just saw them tonight. I'll grant you, those are the only 9 bottles in the county, but they're definitely there.
Cheers! Depending on the pick, that Riverset was Dickel distilled 95/5. The Blue Note UCUF was from Green River, and The Riverset Rye picks were Dickel. That could have changed in the last year. My favorite rye by far.
The awesome part gents is I have 4 of these Ryes and they are all due to you gents when I first started watching your channel. I have the Riverset SiB (Store Pick) and it is phenomenal pour. #Cheers🥃🥃 Gents
For Me the Old Overholt BIB the the best of the five follow closely buy the Pikesville! I would have had the Russells Reserve 6 year rye on that list. Keep up the good work!
Enjoying this series and the BIB sounds like a great topic. Sipping some Pikesville Rye now and it sounds like I need to pick up a couple bottles as I’m down to the end of my last one. Michter’s Rye is very good and it should be available in most markets. My wife prefers rye’s and she always picks Michters first and Pikesville second in blind tastings. You cannot leave out Wild Turkey 101 Rye and Old Forester Rye is my low budget rye and I keep it in a crystal decanter as a good daily sipper.
Great review guys, and some nice picks. I just got my first rye yesterday and fell in love. I didnt want a "barely rye" so I went with the Bulleit 95 and took the plunge. Glad I did, because now Im a huge fan. I love that robust spice and especially the piney type smell/taste you get from it. I'm definitely going to keep exploring them, and now I have some good recommendations on what to get next. Cheers!
I'd recommend the Knob Creek Single Barrel Rye altho it may be out of the price range you were trying to stay in...about $60. I also tend to lean into the higher rye mash bills as well.
Great video fellas. My go to “budget rye” is the emerald Giant by redwood empire, it’s $34 in California. Also, Michters Rye is a solid barely legal rye for bourbon fans for $42. Other than that, it’s Willet 4 year all day every day. Can’t be beat. With some ice, the dill really comes out, it’s wonderful.
I enjoyed the Emerald Giant as well, but you can't get it in my state and the last time I was in Cali the liquor store I went to in San Fran was selling it for $60. Will definitely pick it up again when I can find it for a good price
When it comes to whisky, rye whiskey remains my soft spot. And it is (at least partially) your "fault", so thank you for all the information presented on the channel along the years! :) Now, as I am located in Eastern Europe (Romania), Rittenhouse is the only one available of these 5, at the equivalent of 25 USD. Other ryes that from time to time are discounted at around 30 USD are Woodford Reserve, Redemption and Bulleit (they are usually 40 USD). These taste great neat or in Boulevardiers. Keep up the good work!
By far the best budget rye that I've had is Redwood Empire's Emerald Giant. It's always under $40 ($30-$35 in my area) and better than their bourbon. It's 95/5 rye with all the spice but no harshness. Lots of burnt orange peel. Great neat or for an old fashioned. Another great rye around the same price is Rossville Union. This is MGP but it's their own brand. It's so smooth it's almost Canadian in taste. They have a higher end cask strength that is also so easy to drink that you have to go slow. It's a rye spiced bread with raisins. Very nice!
First of all, thank you for the videos you create. You have helped me to get into bourbon for the right reasons. I watched this video several times and decided on the Old Overholt bottled in bond. I really enjoy this bottle and have noticed that it has a flavor similar to Archway soft batch molasses cookies. For me it comes in mid palate. I tried a moonshine that was made with rye, and it had a black pepper note. I enjoyed it and was wondering which rye whiskey would have that. I originally bought a bottle of Redemption Rye trying to get that flavor.
Great Video!! Going to have to try my own blind to see if I end up with the same ranking. I have all of these except the Riverset Keep up the great work
Didn't know riverside existed till I found the rum they source that is finished in rye barrels. That had me looking for the rye, which I finally found, that is phenomenal! Recently found a store pick of it and will be getting it soon to compare the standard rye to the higher proof rye. Awesome video, guys. Can't wait for Friday's episode.
I know they aren't everywhere but Smooth Ambler Contradiction Rye is my favorite bottle of anything under $45. $39 here in Ohio, 105 proof. In my mind this one can't be beat.
Excellent list gents! I'd add Sazerac Rye, Michter's Rye (a little over $40), High West Double Rye, and for sure Sagamore Rye (can find under 40 frequently).
Riverset is fantastic!! I will need to try Old Forester and the Pikesville if I can find one. Excellent reviews guys. Rare breed rye should be on there.
I didn't go through all of the comments to see if this had been suggested already, but my favorite rye by far is Old Maysville Club, which is put out by Old Pogue distillery. 100 proof, 100% rye mash bill that has been malted.
Pikesville all the way! I picked up another bottle over the weekend and put a pretty good dent in it. I'll be stocking up if I know it's going away. Great video guys!
Pikesville all the way! Originally from Maryland, moved to Kentucky. I still have bottles of Maryland made Pikesville rye. This "new" Pikesville rye is a true quality Maryland style rye. Thankfully, it is readily available here in Maryland.
Loved this video ... I'm a rye guy exclusively! Idea for future ... a NEW rye video trying some ryes you haven't had or haven't had much. I'm working on a Clyde May's(94 proof) bottle that is really good. Happy to send you one!
Really appreciated this video. Budget ryes are almost my daily drinker. I have WT101 Rye, Old Overholt, and Rittenhouse typically in my rotation. I think I have seen Pikesville locally but none of the rest. Thanks again!
This is quickly becoming my goto whiskey 🥃 channel. Great job on this lineup Trent and Kurt. I have the Rittenhouse Rye and I love it for cocktails 🍸 and sipping on occasion. I will be keeping an eye out for Pikesville Rye as a dedicated rye for sipping.
Pikesville was hard to find around WI for awhile there. I thought I heard it had to do with the glass shortage, but don’t know that for sure. Luckily it has returned, not in huge quantities but it’s definitely around now which is good! That old forester, pound for pound is hard to beat. It had a ton of flavor, unfortunately I get a strong black licorice note and I do not like black licorice. We have the OO Bonded here in WI too, haven’t picked it up. I did grab the 114 when I was traveling that I can’t wait to crack! I will have to keep a lookout for the Riverset! Agreed about the EC Rye, it’s fine, goes down easy. Nothing too crazy.
Smooth Ambler contradiction rye is a great choice. It's a $35-$40 rye, that tastes like a $55-$60 bottle. It's a blend of M.G.P ryes, non chilled filtered and 105 proof . Viscous and rich flavor. .
Gosh, I like EC Rye guys, but maybe my taster ain’t what it could be. Rare Breed Rye to high for this list, but bring on Old Forester! I found Old Forester 86 while in grad school at U of L and it got me through lol. Thanks to Trenton, bad influencer, I started on ryes and now are kinda my jam. Great content, keep it up, we’ll all be watching 👊
Great work fellas! For the bottled-in-bond episode, a few suggestions: Evan Williams BiB Jack Daniels Bonded Early Times BiB Heaven Hill 7-year BiB Dickel 11 or 13 year BiB Old Forrester 1897 Old Grand Dad Bonded 1792 BiB All can be found reliably around me for under $50
Pikesville is excellent. It just came back in stock in the Atlanta area. If you see it buy it. A little on the sweet side but it’s delicious straight or in a mixed drink.
Not budget but my favorite rye pour I have open on my bar right now is a wilderness trail store picks. At around 5-6 yrs and 105ish proof the flavors have a nice rye spice and some caramel. I went back and got 2 more at $65/each.
I've had Rittenhouse and Old Overholt Ryes. Although I'm primarily a bourbon drinker, I enjoy a good rye. Ryeskey 120 proof from Glens Creek distilling in Frankfort, KY is fantastic as is the Rye whiskey from Broad Branch distilling in Winston Salem, NC. I'm surprised you didn't mention Russell's Reserve 6 year old Rye. It is normally under $35 and is great!
I love Sazerac straight more than anything at its price point. However my state doesn’t even list it online, at least I haven’t seen it since I’ve been into whiskey. It’s a “see a random couple of bottles on the shelf and grab them and count your blessings” kind of thing for me 🥲
I'm glad to see Old Overholt recognized in this review. Not the bottled in Bond, but the Straight Rye Whiskey is my go to Rye. Originated right here in Pennsylvania and it makes my favorite Manhattan. Thank you for another nice video.
Great show as usual guys. I appreciate the rye knowledge as I only have a few bottles in my collection, my favorite being the Prideful Goat Cask Strength. That's over the price point for this discussion though. I don't think I've ever seen the Old Forester rye but I'd definitely be up for that. And yes, an episode on BiB bourbons would be great. That 100 proof is, to quote Kurt, in my wheelhouse. Looking forward to it. Cheers.
M glad you mentioned Riverset Rye. I only discovered it because I bought a whisky cabinet that was made from a used Riverset Rye barrel, and I hadn’t heard of Riverset before that. I bought a bottle to try, and really liked it (and I’m not really a rye guy).
Good show. Not a big rye fan but BIB show would be great. Not a lot of Wheated BIB but the Wilderness Trail Wheated BIB is outstanding. Just trying to influence your selection 😊
Totally agree on the Old Forester and Pikesville. Been curious about Old Overholt. Even though there is a minty taste I have enjoyed the basic Sagamore Rye and Smooth Ambler Contradiction Rye.
I'm totally down for a good BiB episode, I truly love the content you guys bring! Thank you, guys, for all that you do.
New drinking game: every time Trent says the work “quintessential”, you have to drink. We would all be hammered
I think he took that word over! 😂
It's true. He uses that to describe at least 1 whiskey per video.
Wild Turkey rye is tasty and affordable. Pikesville seemed to disappear from stores but I see it slowly making a come back to some online stores. Still have not seen it locally.
Nice list! One that never gets talked about is Knob Creek Rye small batch. Really solid for about $30
And now it has a 7 year age statement!
Would love the bottle-in-bond show! Definitely my favorite style of product!
Another vote to do a BiB video this Friday. Love your guys content. You educate and always bring a few smiles to your shows. ++++
Cheers!
Great selection! Not really a budget one but my fav rye so far is Sagamore Double Oaked and Rare Breed Rye!
Sagamore really does make great ryes. I have a bottle of their cask strength and really love it.
Shout Out to Rare Breed Rye. It is amazing! Sagamore is always good.
I'm right there with you on the Sagamore Dbl Oaked. That my be my favorite pour at the moment.
Wild Turkey 101 rye, $30 for a liter and very good! Pikesville is in a different cost class ($50+)...flavor too me thinks. Great show as always.
Just restocked my OF Rye (1L size). It was my first rye and remains my favorite budget rye. Great solo sipper and excellent in cocktails.
I'd be happy with a budget BIB episode. BTW, here in PA, where the spirit sales are state controlled, the are only 7 bottles of Pikesville Rye available in the stores covering the whole state and they are selling for $62.39. Good thing Trenton bought the case!
Cleveland has it in stock at $50 (+ tax of course)
Numbers must be off on your FW&GS. There are 9 bottles in my local store. Just saw them tonight. I'll grant you, those are the only 9 bottles in the county, but they're definitely there.
Cheers! Depending on the pick, that Riverset was Dickel distilled 95/5. The Blue Note UCUF was from Green River, and The Riverset Rye picks were Dickel. That could have changed in the last year. My favorite rye by far.
Hell yeah we want to see a budget BIB episode. Thank you for all the great content!!
The awesome part gents is I have 4 of these Ryes and they are all due to you gents when I first started watching your channel. I have the Riverset SiB (Store Pick) and it is phenomenal pour. #Cheers🥃🥃 Gents
Appreciate you as well!
Bring on the budget BiB episode! Great channel gents! 👍🏼🥃
Can't wait 4 the BiB show! BTW, GREAT JOB TRENTON!!
Riverset is the bomb! Great price and the proof point is spot on.
DANG!!!! How you guys have such a refined taste is amazing. Always Amazed!
My personal taste favors rye, i really enjoy when you feauture ryes. Thanks for all the work putting the videos together
I'm definitely new to rye whiskey but sazerac has been my favorite so far. It just has a buttery sweetness about it that's great.
For Me the Old Overholt BIB the the best of the five follow closely buy the Pikesville! I would have had the Russells Reserve 6 year rye on that list. Keep up the good work!
I love close ups, it allows me to quick screen shot, so I can remember what to get when shopping.
Love the content, I'm a new connoisseur
Enjoying this series and the BIB sounds like a great topic. Sipping some Pikesville Rye now and it sounds like I need to pick up a couple bottles as I’m down to the end of my last one. Good line up. I usually get the WT 101 Rye. It's less than $30 for a liter bottle in OR and works neat, on ice, or in a cocktail.
It's nearly twice that price here in Texas. Haven't pulled the trigger yet.
I enjoyed the Emerald Giant as well, but you can't get it in my state and the last time I was in Cali the liquor store I went to in San Fran was selling it for $60. Will definitely pick it up again when I can find it for a good price
You guys are AWESOME! Thank You for your demeanor and professionalism! Brought with humor and solid info!

I've had rye on my mind for a few days now, and look at that a new rye video. Thanks yall!!
I am going to start testing out Rye, have never had any experience. All those are available where I live so I am going to give it a try. Great video !
Great video as always gentlemen. One i might ad to the list might be High West Double rye. But your selection is definitely solid. Cheers.
The old Forester rye one of my favorites mashbill is 65% rye, 25% malted barley and 15% corn. Keep up the great content love your videos.
Great list. Wild Turkey 101 Rye is a killer bottle for $25 as well.
Wow, that's actually $45 in my state.
@@lars2894 I'm sorry to hear that. I'm in CO and the 1L 101 rye and bourbon are always around $25 or less.
Great video! Love the ryes…and it’s Trenton’s wheelhouse! Bring on the BiB video on Friday…cheers!
First of all, thank you for the videos you create. You have helped me to get into bourbon for the right reasons. I watched this video several times and decided on the Old Overholt bottled in bond. Only had old Forester. Thanks for giving more to try
I'm always up for some BIB talk! Excellent as always gentlemen!
Yes I would love to see another one of those shows on a Friday
Great video, as usual. I would like to see a best BiB budget bourbon video!
I know they aren't everywhere but Smooth Ambler Contradiction Rye is my favorite bottle of anything under $45. $39 here in Ohio, 105 proof. In my mind this one can't be beat.
I’d love to see a BiB budget episode. You guys are great. Thanks for keeping me informed and entertained.
Excellent list gents! I'd add Sazerac Rye, Michter's Rye (a little over $40), High West Double Rye, and for sure Sagamore Rye (can find under 40 frequently).
I really enjoy the high west rye. The bottle is pretty cool looking as well.
Plus 1 on the High West Double Rye
Riverset is fantastic!! I will need to try Old Forester and the Pikesville if I can find one. Excellent reviews guys. Rare breed rye should be on there.
I didn't go through all of the comments to see if this had been suggested already, but my favorite rye by far is Old Maysville Club, which is put out by Old Pogue distillery. 100 proof, 100% rye mash bill that has been malted.
Absolutely do the BiB show. Thanks for all you guys do you're absolutely fantastic.
Pikesville all the way! I picked up another bottle over the weekend and put a pretty good dent in it. I'll be stocking up if I know it's going away. Great video guys!
I'm with Kurt... I love all the whiskies. yes, please, on the BiB.
Pikesville all the way! Originally from Maryland, moved to Kentucky. I still have bottles of Maryland made Pikesville rye.
This "new" Pikesville rye is a true quality Maryland style rye.
Thankfully, it is readily available here in Maryland.
I just bought a bottle of Pikesville here in TX for $75. Very limited supply. My favorite!
Great breakdown on the Rye's.
Would love to see a BIB episode for the budget side.
Love the ryes, will definitely have to look for a Riverset now. I have never heard of it either!
Great T-Shirt Idea, I would definitely buy one!
You da man!
Cheers, guys! I'd love to see the BiB episode!
Loved this video ... I'm a rye guy exclusively! Idea for future ... a NEW rye video trying some ryes you haven't had or haven't had much. I'm working on a Clyde May's(94 proof) bottle that is really good. Happy to send you one!
BIB yes please! Great video as usual.
I always watch to the end, never know what you guys might sneak in!
I like Balconies Rye also. Good pics guys.
Really appreciated this video. Budget ryes are almost my daily drinker. I have WT101 Rye, Old Overholt, and Rittenhouse typically in my rotation. I think I have seen Pikesville locally but none of the rest. Thanks again!
ILL BUY THAT SHIRT!!! Loving all this content!
😂
This is quickly becoming my goto whiskey 🥃 channel. Great job on this lineup Trent and Kurt. I have the Rittenhouse Rye and I love it for cocktails 🍸 and sipping on occasion. I will be keeping an eye out for Pikesville Rye as a dedicated rye for sipping.
Thanks Shane!
Interesting list! Going to have to try out that Old Forester Rye
For the bottled-in-bond episode, a few suggestions:
Evan Williams BiB
Jack Daniels Bonded
Early Times BiB
Heaven Hill 7-year BiB
Dickel 11 or 13 year BiB
Old Forrester 1897
Old Grand Dad Bonded
1792 BiB
All can be found reliably around me for under $50
Pikesville is excellent. It just came back in stock in the Atlanta area. If you see it buy it. A little on the sweet side but it’s delicious straight or in a mixed drink.
Hello Kurt and Trenton from Michigan, yes, I would love to see a BIB episode thanks so much. (:
It’s a “see a random couple of bottles on the shelf and grab them and count your blessings” kind of thing for me 🥲
Great picks love the OF and Pikesville. I can usually find a New Riff barrel pick for $45 too. Cheers
Thanks for so many videos. It is appreciated.
Great choices and I would add Redwood Empire Emerald Giant.
Second the Emerald Giant
Love these videos! BIB would be great for Friday! Thank you
Yes to the bottle and bond video.
Really enjoy your budget series. Yes to BiB.
I really enjoy a good rye and have some of these. Looking forward to the BiB tomorrow!
This episode was very good ,absolutely do a bottle n bond episode .
Yes on the BIB. Do you remember what state you found the Riverset in? It would be fun to look for it.
I'm glad to see Old Overholt recognized in this review. Not the bottled in Bond, but the Straight Rye Whiskey is my go to Rye. Originated right here in Pennsylvania and it makes my favorite Manhattan. Thank you for another nice video.
Definitely yes to the bottled in bond!
Cheers.
Love em all too Kurt, but heavy peat is my Jam!!
Nice job! WT101 Rye is solid as well.
M glad you mentioned Riverset Rye. I only discovered it because I bought a whisky cabinet that was made from a used Riverset Rye barrel, and I hadn’t heard of Riverset before that. I bought a bottle to try, and really liked it (and I’m not really a rye guy).
BIB👍 Good little series as always gentlemen
I would like to see the Bottled-in-Bond show Friday to see what the lineup would look like.
BIB budget show would be great! Thanks for all your effort.
I’m loving these budget videos! Keep it up!
Not a rye fan currently. I only have Old Forester Rye, Pikesville and New Riff Balboa Rye. 🥃
Good lineup. I would add Russell’s and Rare Breed ryes which are fabulous.
Yes. Bottled in bond Friday!
