I don't consume alcohol due to health stuff. I find the industry somewhat interesting, but I watch you mostly because you are such authentic and good hearted people, and it is clear you are having a blast. You deserve the success 100%.
Rossville Union is an amazing rye and has become one of my favorites. The Barrel proof is a blend of the MGP’s 51% Rye, 45% Corn, 4% Malted Barley mash bill and the 95% Rye, 5% Malted Barley mash bill.

I think what made this video so entertaining was watching them give tasting notes on the last 2 confusing each other since their glasses were in different orders.
I'm subscribed to half a dozen whiskey tube channels. They're all informative, and sometimes funny, but you guys deliver a little more - watching you makes me feel good!
Suggestion to add a larger letter for each glass, maybe thicker black marker, too? Those letters are really hard to read on a laptop or std screen. But love the channel!
I always claimed I didn't care much for ryes, but like Kurt, I am really starting to enjoy them a lot lately. I'm going to have to pick up a bottle of the Rossville Union now. Thanks, guys!
Rossville Union is around $62 here in South Texas. I DO love the Rare Breed Rye for exactly the reasons Trenton stated. It is a very traditional Rye style unlike many others. Hard to fault the MGP 95/5 Rye mashbill though...It's the base for a ton of non-producing distillers...thanks guys!
MGP juice for the win (and runner up) We have a Rye tasting coming up. We chose WT Rare Breed because of its traditional taste and Barrel Seagrass because of its complexity of flavors. My favorite Ryes are from Driftless Glen and Starlight.
Always a great way to start Friday. I did a 4 glass rye blind with Rare Breed, Peerless, Pikesville and KB SB, with the Pikesville winning. I do recall that there were more similarities than differences, and it was much tougher to differentiate compared to bourbon blinds. All were close on proof
That food reference of broadening taste buds rings so true! You guys rock, and I also can say my journey of whiskey has evolved in just a couple years. It's opened up to savoring all spirits honestly 😅 Had a huge rum kick through this past winter. Anyway, getting back into bourbon/whiskey after other flavors does some amazing things with flavor distinction etc. Cheers to a good rye
WT Rare Breed Rye and Pikesville are both tasty, but for $60 I much prefer Sagamore Cask Strength. I've also really been loving Old Overholt Bottled in Bond and Old Overholt 114.
I enjoyed this blind, but I would have liked to see a bit more variation in your rye choices. You blinded Rare Breed Rye against three rye whiskeys that come from MGP. I think it would have been a bit better comparison if you had thrown in a Pikesville Rye (110 Proof), a Knob Creek Single Barrel Rye (115 Proof), etc. just to get a better cross section of ryes from different distilleries.
Appreciated the video! Do the Sagamore Double Oak. And...yes, you should be able to calculate the sqft on a 2×9 faster than you can smell spice on a rye.
I have a different Rossville Union rye, it still says barrel proof but it has a 7 year age statement. It was released in an allocated drop but I don’t think anybody other than me was interested, I’m still seeing them on the shelves like three weeks later. Now I’m excited to open it! it was $65 for a 7 year rye, that sounds pretty good to me.
MGP's stuff is almost always extremely solid. The Old Scout Single Barrel Rye store pick I recently got is a MGP sourced whiskey and for 52 bucks, its a hell of a buy. The proof is pretty high, but its actually incredibly smooth for what its at (115.8 proof). Definitely recommended.
Great Lineup!! Love the enthusiasm with this blind!! WT Rye stays on my bar top and I truly enjoy it!! Still waiting on the behind/over the top of the bar camera!!
Yep, I've come to distrust his thumbnails. Who remembers the thumbnail, on a video which they took down immediately, where he was pouring a bottle down the drain?
Funny that their last glasses are not the same, but Kurt suggests that the flavor dissipates rapidly and Trenton embellishes. trent suggests lemon and then Kurt sees citrus. Power of suggestion
Rossville Union Barrel Proof Rye is coming up around $42 in Ohio but its very limited and not seeing it around as much. Thats a great price and like to hear it so will keep my eyes opened for it. Great Blind guys!!
Trent, have you had the Russell's Reserve 6 Year Rye? I thought it was really exceptional for the price. It was the first rye I ever tried and it got me really interested in branching out from bourbon to trying more ryes.
The Sagamore is the only one of the four available in my city it seems, the non cask strength is on clearance right now, so i might pick that up to try, the cask strength is $25 CDN more.
I like the spirit ID on the bottom of the screen. Love the Rye Review too. I’ve only ever tried the Templeton product, but I’m sure the Sagamore is available in my area, I’ll have to see if I can find some of the Rossville stuff.
Never had the sagamore before but love Rare Breed Rye. Got the Green River Rye yesterday at the release. Very good easy sipper. Probably will be my new go to sipper Rye.
Good comparison. I'll have to try the Rossville Union. I like the Sagamore and the RB quite a bit. Never tasted them together though. If you did make it 5, Pikesville would have been an interesting addition. That's a great Rye for under $50.
The Rossville Union is $70 now in NC. I don't know if I've seen it. Definitely haven't tried it. How does it differ from the Sagamore CS if they're both MGP?
Can you put a piece of tape or something on the back of the bar to mark the middle and end of the camera frame? Give you some sort of reference. Also, you forgot the description.. again.
I tried Sagamore, but I didn’t like it very much. I’ve heard Wild Turkey 101 Rye, is actually better than their Rare Bread Rye. I’m definitely going to try your top pick from this video. Love your show! Thanks
The only one I have tried is the rare breed rye. If the others placed higher than that I’ll have to give them a try! Thanks for the content, I always find it enjoyable and entertaining.
Russell’s Single Barrel Rye is another interesting comparison. It’s the better “Turkey” rye for sure. But Sagamore is just SO good! Rossville Union is in clearance in my state for $41.99, so I’ll be looking to grab a bottle before they’re gone next time I’m out.
Ya know what I'd like to see? A series of blind mini-tournaments. I.e. Top-16 sub-100 proof Ryes/Top-16 +100 proof Ryes, Top-16 sub $30 BIB bourbons/Top-16 "Shelf Stable" BIB Single Barrel bourbons, etc Fun seeing a blink full of bottles I've seen on shelves in Nashville on this video, cheers!
Blind tasting idea: 5 different MGP sourced rye's and/or bourbon's. Would be interesting to hear your take on the base product and how it develops by different brands through their aging process, etc.
Wild Turkey's ryes have gotten a lot of hype just because it's a resurrection of something they used to do that they just started releasing again a couple years ago. I have both the 101 and Rare Breed ryes. I haven't poured them in quite a while, but I don't remember being super impressed by them. They lean in more of the vegetal direction than most ryes, and I remember getting a lot of lemon and black pepper on them. They're good for something a little different, but they're far from my favorite ryes.
Doesn't the Sagamore have a "Distilled In" statement? Mine does and it is IN. I think they have some Distilled in MD releases now but most are from IN. I'm not sure it was the standard MGP 95/5 rye though. I was under the impression it was contract distilled and a different MD Rye recipe. Now I need to go hunt for the 5 variations of Rossville available in my state. My palate loves you, my wallet has a different opinion. Have you ever sampled anything from Barrel King?
Thank you for this Rye blind! I do enjoy the RB BS (though the RB BS Bourbon is more my thing). And I have steered away from the Sagamore BS but love their finished offerings and their 8-year. SO I need to give their BS a try! Many thanks again!
Did Rossville Union change their bottles? I just picked up the BP 7y, and it looks like the picture on their website, which is very different from the BP bottle featured here.
If you guys have a way to get ahold of J. Henry whiskey, you have to try their new Four Grain Rye. That stuff is fantastic! The front has heavy toasted marshmallow notes and the finish will hit you with that nice, warm peppery rye spice!
That would make an interesting discussion. How many selections makes a good blind? Is 4 or 5 a good number? I think I saw a Bourbon Junkies blind go up to 8 or 9 each....is that too many? Is there a sweet spot?
@@slbdrinks I went and watched the video thinking I missed it but had already liked it. It’s $75 in NC but I preferred it to EH Taylor Rye the first night I ever tried it.
Perhaps place some markers on the bar for a 4 bottle setup and a 5 bottle setup. Then you have a spot to place the bottle and you do not need to worry. ;)
Rare Breed rye is on my to try list. Sagamore and Rittenhouse are also on my list. Bulleit Rye got me into rye. I just picked up a 13th Colony Southern Rye and a Middle West Dark Pumpernickel Rye. The Pumpernickel is pretty darn good...I haven't cracked the 13th Colony yet. Maybe y'all could do a blind on double oaked🤔🥃❤
Video idea: Try your favorite bourbons after eating a mberry miracle berry tablet. I've never had one before but I hear they change your taste buds in some fashion, temporarily.
Is that Rossville bottle a single barrel? I know Binny's has a number of single barrel picks from Rossville that come in different mash bills, that range from 51% to 95% rye and have either corn or malted barley as the secondary grain. I was wondering if you know what you have in that bottle?
@slbdrinks thanks for the reply! Right now, all the Rossville barrel proofs at Binny's (my nearest large liquor store) are single barrels. I'll have to look around for the basic barrel proof offering.
Sagamore does still source from MGP, but they are making their own distillate. They have a 4, 5, & 6 year BiB of their own distillate. They are a few years away from going to 100% pure Sagamore. Also, Sagamore is not 95/5 MGP rye. They take a blend of 95/5 & 51/49 MGP rye. I live a few minutes from the distillery. A must visit 🤙
Adding a surprise glass for the blinds would be a good twist. Maybe a third party can choose beforehand. Sill, no bigger twist then when I noticed Kurt’s glass order
Interesting that three of the four are all variations of MGP rye. It would be interesting to put some other Kentucky ryes fare. Granted I would say Rare Breed Rye gives me a lot of spice for a Kentucky rye.
4:06 "Our oldest son" = Kurt and Trenton's oldest son? 🤣 5:39 I like the regular Sagamore Spirit, and the next time I buy that brand I want to give the barrel proof a whirl. I like proof. 🥃 *This is your regularly scheduled reminder that we're still waiting for the NoteCam.* 😂 I don't know how everyone else could spot the transposition in Kurt's glasses. I had to get right up to the screen to see it. 🙂
My only WT Rare Breed rye was when it was spanking new at an allocation sale…it was fine. Templeton doesn’t exist here….who cares, I guess. Rossville isn’t sourced, it is in house…the rye version of Remus. Love Sagamore Double Oaked…the best picking store in OKC has a Sagamore pick…getting it ASAP.
Although yes, you should know how many square feet 2' x 9' is, it's ok that you looked it up, because there are reference materials for everything, so keeping it in your mind is not necessary.
I don't consume alcohol due to health stuff. I find the industry somewhat interesting, but I watch you mostly because you are such authentic and good hearted people, and it is clear you are having a blast.

Great lineup. I've never had Rossville on my radar, but this video changed that.
Just got my first redwood empire Emerald Giant and its delicious.
Especially for the price.
The cask strength of that is currently my fav pour - little bit of wheat in there makes it a stunner
The Rossville Union is $70 now in NC. I don't know if I've seen it. Definitely haven't tried it. How does it differ from the Sagamore CS if they're both MGP?
Good question Robert. I need to research but more than likely years of aging and location.

Rossville is $80 here in Virginia
Riverset rye is my go to for a budget cask rye. Its value can’t be beat IMO.
I’ve started to expand my horizons when it comes to rye, so I decided to get a bottle of Rossville Union based on this video. Good call!

A series of blind mini-tournaments.
I.e. Top-16 sub-100 proof Ryes/Top-16 +100 proof Ryes, Top-16 sub $30 BIB bourbons/Top-16 "Shelf Stable" BIB Single Barrel bourbons, etc
Fun seeing a blink full of bottles I've seen on shelves in Nashville on this video, cheers!
Our bourbon madness tournament coming up in March!

Anyone know what batch/bottling date of the Rare Breed Rye is? The bottling date is on the glass, usually below the back label.
Sagamore makes a double oak rye that is really good too.

You should try beaver gland whiskey from tamworth distillery in New Hampshire. Definitely unique
I can't tell if Trenton is joking or not when he asks how many square feet is 2x9. The dry humor is top notch.
That was a facepalm 🤦♂️ for sure
$69.95 for the Rossville here in NC. I need to revisit Sag… Had it a while back and wasn’t overly impressed.

4-5 is great for me. I feel like I can taste each glass individually and not worry about over imbibing. Just my two cents.
I would suggest trying Alberta Premium Cask Strength in a lineup similar to this.

@slbdrinks thanks for the reply! Right now, all the Rossville barrel proofs at Binny's (my nearest large liquor store) are single barrels. I'll have to look around for the basic barrel proof offering.
I dig The Rare Breed Rye even though it's a lower proof it seems like it runs way hotter
Pretty sure Sagamore is stated 7 years on the back, no?
Whatever happened to the overhead camera ? Still curious about that scenario
“This is objecty” -Trent.
Love it.
What would Kurts order have been if they addva fifth pour?
Yall need to try Catoctin Creek 92 Proof Rye. That stuff is no joke.
I looked in your store but I don't see an option to purchase those glasses. Are they available?
Oh, found it! I figure the ones in this episode are NOT the "wee" size.
4:06 "Our oldest son" = Kurt and Trenton's oldest son? 🤣
5:39 I like the regular Sagamore Spirit, and the next time I buy that brand I want to give the barrel proof a whirl. I like proof. 🥃
*This is your regularly scheduled reminder that we're still waiting for the NoteCam.* 😂
I don't know how everyone else could spot the transposition in Kurt's glasses.
Oooh, that Rossville is on Last Call in Ohio for $42. I'll be grabbing one.
Although yes, you should know how many square feet 2' x 9' is, it's ok that you looked it up, because there are reference materials for everything, so keeping it in your mind is not necessary.
