    Question regarding whiskey tasting. We all know that a whiskey can taste differently each time you pour, depending on a bunch of factors (food, drink, time of day, whether or not Rex has brushed his teeth, etc...) I was wondering if you could purposely reset your palate by eating or drinking something prior to sampling your next pour. Example, I love the shortbread butter cookie from Redbreast Cask, but can't always find it. Is there a way I could set up my palate to always get my cookie? :)

Without it bourbon would not be bourbon anymore. That statement is gonna piss off a lot of bourbon lovers. Myself included. it's the equivalent of saying scotch should not have to be made exclusively in Scotland. I get you guys aren't necessarily bourbon fans but dam leave bourbon regulations alone .

    • @sggjose
      @sggjose 2 года назад

      @@saint-cetacean I corrected the misquote, thanks for catching that. No, bourbon rules don't need to change. If a distiller wants to use other barrels, nothing is preventing them from doing so... It's just not bourbon. There's a push right now to recognize American Single Malt as it's own legal category. Hopefully that comes through.

    • @saint-cetacean
      @saint-cetacean 2 года назад

      @@sggjose I agree ASM should have more legal definition. I think the trick here is in educating lay-people while allowing bourbon to broaden its possibilities without losing the cache of being called bourbon.
      People who watch this channel tend to be the nerdier sorts of whiskey drinkers (on average), but hell most average customers think bourbon *has to come from KY*, so the knowledge that, say, Angel's Envy is not technically a bourbon by formal TTB rules.
      That being said, how much of a difference does that make?
      I think I am okay with finished bourbons being called bourbons SO LONG AS it is disclosed what they were finished in and perhaps how long (Back label?).
      IE perhaps a law that states, in effect, "a bourbon may be matured up to a total of one year in non-virgin barrels of the distiller's choice, so long as the bourbon spent a minimum of four years' aging in new charred oak barrels AND the front label clearly indicates the types of finishing barrels used". Or something to that effect.
      IE this woodinville could count as a bourbon if it spent 6 and 6 months in the other casks, but they would have to front-label that it is a barrel finished bourbon.
      Plus some provision about blending of different finishing ages so you couldn't blend together two different batches one that spent a year in sherry and one that spent a year in islay.
