Best Rye Whiskey 91-100 Proof? (Blind Flight Fight)

  • Chad and Sara blind taste four rye whiskeys to see which ones stack up and which fall short in this 91 to 100 proof battle! One more proof category to go; the 101 proof and above! We're looking for the best affordable rye, so that means we won't be testing ryes from the BTAC collection or Whistle Pig's Black Prince or whatever. --------------------------------------------------------------------
    You can follow us and it won't be creepy. I promise. @itsbourbonnight

    Great flight fight! I’m new to rye also, only tried the $40 Michters rye. Bought the Pikesville and 8 year Redemption rye. Being new to bourbon and rye I find it better to only have one or two bottles open at a time. Get a solid opinion, instead of jumping from bottle to bottle. Maybe with more experience it will change for me. Will definitely be buying the Knob creek rye! 🥃👍

    I have not tried Beam bourbons, and have not yet found a bourbon I really like. Everyone I asked told me Rye was pretty much just like bourbon, or 'tastes like rye bread'.?. On a whim, and after having seen this, I picked up a bottle of Knob Creek Rye. It (to me) is warm and spicy, but still smooth. I like it a lot. Thanks for this video. Without it I would probably still be missing out.

    I love you guys. But I would like to register my exasperation with your method of blindfold testing. Namely, it is very difficult to keep the commentary straight when one person's 'A' turns out to be another person's 'D' and the remarks are separated by many minutes. I understand that the idea is not to influence each other. However the result is confusion for the viewer, and speaking for myself, a tendency to disregard commentary that I can't keep straight. I have complete faith that the pair of you are mature and confident enough in your opinions not to be swayed by the others commentary. So guys, can we keep the 'A's' with the 'A's' and the 'B's' with the 'B's?'

    • @ItsBourbonNight
      @ItsBourbonNight  6 лет назад +1

      PalJoey1957 We'll think on it. We're just trying to be as fair to the process as we can be.

    • @PalJoey-rm2yh
      @PalJoey-rm2yh 6 лет назад +2

      For several decades I was in the high end audio review business and did subjective reviews not unlike your blind taste testing. The argument was made that the listening portions should be blindfold tested in pairs or small groups of reviewers so as to equalize the environment and also not let brand name expectations affect our hearing. But I cannot imagine the total confusion that would have ensued if we had tried to change up brands between reviewers in addition to the blindfold.
      I ultimately find that it is long term listening (tasting) that gives you the "truth" about a product. Does it sound (taste) the same on day 2 or 3, morning or evening, in this environment or that? 'Course that is impractical for you guys. But I would at least parallel the brands, A, B, and C. for cohesion and comprehension.
      I appreciate your consideration of the matter. Cheers!

    • @ItsBourbonNight
      @ItsBourbonNight  6 лет назад

      PalJoey1957 Thanks, we will definitely think it over and maybe even experiment with a different method on a show. We in no way think we have settled on the de facto method of our reviews and are very open to others. We appreciate it!

    • @ItsBourbonNight
      @ItsBourbonNight  6 лет назад +1

      Ryan Campbell The best celebratory bourbon is the one you love to drink the most! Haha probably not the answer you were looking for. It's hard to say, what area do you live in? Some things that are somewhat common to us Kentuckians might be more rare to you depending on where you live. For example, do you see a lot of Noah's Mill or Old Forester 1920 around? Those are 2 great higher proof bourbons that we love. Booker's is another. If you're looking for something more rare, Rock Hill Farms is great, maybe some Weller Antique. I don't want to recommend something that's going to be near to impossible to find, so I'm keeping that in mind. But really, anything that you love to drink. The occasion will make the bourbon taste even better. :)

  • @PalJoey-rm2yh
    @PalJoey-rm2yh 6 лет назад +2

    If my eyes do not deceive me, I seem to see a couple of bottles of a certain bourbon in back of you in the display rack. That item is a minor, but memorable moment in the dialogue of an an iconic film: "The Hustler."
    Fats: "Preach, go down and get me some White Tavern whiskey, a glass and some ice."
    Fast Eddie: "Preacher, go on down and get me some bourbon. JTS Brown. No ice, no glass."
    Fats: "Preach, get it at Johnny's."
    I'd love a review and some color commentary and history on that antique brand, JTS Brown. After which I'll add my own memory of the taste.
    AND, if anyone here has not seen this film, why, you simply cannot qualify as a bourbon drinker. Pick a quiet evening and see it.

    • @ItsBourbonNight
      @ItsBourbonNight  6 лет назад +1

      PalJoey1957 Classic film, and yes, that is the JTS Brown. We got it for our 1st episode; 50 bourbons under $25. It didn't win, but I remember it being pretty solid.

    • @faust451
      @faust451 6 лет назад +1

      Ha! I spotted the J.T.S. Brown as well. It along with Heaven Hill 6-year Bottled in Bond are the two bottles I grab when traveling to Kentucky as they are not distributed where I live.
      And I also totally agree, The Hustler is a must-watch movie, an absolute classic. Paul Newman, Jackie Gleason, George C. Scott and Piper Laurie; even with a trip to Louisville for Derby Week to boot, what's not to love.

    A suggestion in response to those commenting about the difficultly of remembering which whiskey is in which glass. After tasting a given letter for the first time, keep the name (in smaller font) permanently on the wide shots. As you go through the letters, just add the names. So in the second run through, all the names are there overlaid on the glasses (maybe at a slight angle or offset horizontally to fit everything in). It's clear for viewers, and you get to keep your current randomization as is. It's a little more editing work though....

  • @davidlavin3492

    Part of the "hang up" about EH Taylor is the price. There are so many good/great ryes in the $20-$40 range that expectations sometimes skyrocket when paying double. For $25, the Rittenhouse is really good and versatile. I just finished a bottle of the EH Taylor, and in going back through notes and comparing to a bottle of similar price, The WhistlePig 10 I thought was better. I am a rye fan, will have to look into Knob Creek.

    • @ItsBourbonNight
      @ItsBourbonNight  6 лет назад

      Totally agree. Right now (having not done our 3rd Rye Flight Fight yet) I feel like the Pikesville Rye at around $50 in our area, is about as much as I feel like paying for a great rye (unless I get the opportunity to buy something for the BTAC collection at retail). I also haven't had the WhistlePig 10 before, but for $80 it would need to be exceptional, but I would really like to try it.

    • @davidlavin3492
      @davidlavin3492 6 лет назад +1

      WP 10 is also 100% rye. Could be wrong, but I thought you two prefer a lower rye content rye. Its definitely worth a try though. So at $80 (its a bit higher in my area) check a local bar/restaurant. Look forward to the next flight fight. Keep up the good work. My first reaction usually is "damn, video is over already?"

    • @arickbakken
      @arickbakken 6 лет назад +1

      Could just be me but getting anywhere near a 45% barley content in a mash bill in a US whiskey is going to be extremely rare. It would have to be a very small production craft distillery to get that combo. If a rye is not in the 90's (which wouldn't come close to meeting your target), the next biggest content would be corn. The barley is usually just thrown in as the smallest amount just to get the fermentation going quickly. Again, I could be wrong. I guess there might be a Canadian that would come close. That's probably where I'd check first.

    • @iladdiewhiskynerd4924
      @iladdiewhiskynerd4924 6 лет назад +1

      Arick Bakken thank you for this insight! I am looking into this because bruichladdich is making a rye barley dram based on 55/45 % mashbill and was trying to find a dram that has the same. This would predict a taste profile (sorta).

    Old Forester rye. $22.00 in Ohio. Excellent....65% rye I believe.

    Sara,
    which bourbon that you all uncorked gave you immediate peanut butter notes?

      Cliff Lash, I think it was the Noah’s Mill, way powdered peanut butter tasting.

    JEP: not surprising since it's not a KY rye, but an MGP rye

    I’d need to do the side by side between Rittenhouse and KC. Just got my first Rittenhouse bottle (good stuff, but it’s no Pikesville), and I’ve had the KC Rye. I love the KC Single Barrel store pick, but not as excited about the KC rye...think I prefer the Rittenhouse. Good stuff guys 👍🏻

    Enjoying a dram of Elijah Craig small batch which is really nice. What do you think of Rittenhouse rye and eagle rare10 as a buy

    • @ItsBourbonNight
      @ItsBourbonNight  3 года назад

      Eagle rare is harder for us to find, but at $30 I think it’s great. Rittenhouse for $20 is also a win.

    Guys if you've already randomized the samples there is no reason to go through the samples in random order. Once you've randomized just taste them A through D.
    I'm a logic kind of guy... (logic designer). Random is random.
    Let me give you an example. Have Sara put four random numbers under four cups, then tell the audience you're going to tell them the random numbers. Since they are random numbers just expose the numbers A through D.
    Would you tell the viewers you'll tell them the random number in a special 'random' order? The Double randomizing is unnecessary.
    Cheers!

      Raster Thanks for the logic! Our reasons for the 2nd random is that when I pour Sara's flight I'm deciding what bourbon to put with what letter. We just did our 101 proof and above flight last night for instance. I know Sara loves Pikesville. So, even though I'm trying to not think about it, I can't help it. Where does the Pikesville go? Would she be more or less likely to end picking it if it's the first thing she tries? The last? It might not matter at all, but then again it just might. But if we let chance tell us where we start, then I can't develop any type of "game plan" in my head, even if it's subconsciously.
      Those are our thoughts on it anyway. Cheers!

    1776 rye is ok but it's not anywhere near the top of rye's out there. Lot 40 cask strength

      Can't recall seeing Lot 40 Rye in our area. We're trying to stick to more readily available ryes for these Flight Fights, but I would love to try it and we'll keep an eye out for it. Thanks!

    For $20 Rittenhouse is a fantastic rye. I use it as a cheap sipper so I don't use up the Sagamore.

    Thought I heard you mention the Pikesville 110 proof and Rittenhouse are the same mashbill? If so I saw where the Pikesville is aged 6 years (and obviously a higher proof), whereas Rittenhouse is aged 4 years. So aging may account for some difference there too.

    • @ItsBourbonNight
